Do You Gain Weight With Suboxone? (Page 3)

Updated

Hi I'm just starting to research suboxone. I'm currently going to a methadone clinic every day and it is such a hassle. I have to get up every morning at 4am to be there in time to get to work the line is so long but that's beside my point, My real question is Do you gain weight with Suboxone? This is my third attempt at trying to get off of opiates by taking Methadone but every single time I start taking Methadone I gain 40 to 60 pounds within the first 4 months. Most people do, some don't I just happen to be one of them. I get so discouraged by the weight gain that I stop going to the Methadone clinic and then start using again. Sadly my mom died from using the same drug I used before treatment. I have 3 children and want to get my life together again but I just can't cope with the weight gain. Can anyone tell me if Suboxone has the same side affect? And also is there any difference between Suboxone & Suboxine? PLEASE HELP!!!

I was on methadone for 5 years i thought i was doing the right thing in order to get off the pills. At the time of my intake on methadone i was in college and working full time student on full paid scholarship at ut to be a veterinarian . One year later i had no job driving a 300$ car ,had quit school and over the next few years life became hell i got felony charges and numerouse misdemeanor charges all to support my methadone habit which took me 4 of that 5 years to get off of . I started suboxone 2 years ago and it has saved my life . With the suboxone i swear it feels like whille on methadone i had a bubble around my head ,and couldnt think like my brain was shut off . After a month on subs it was like waking up for the first time in about 10years between the pills and methadone . I have a job am back in school and my family trust me now . A friend of mine intook on methadone the same month i started subs we had a running bet who would get clean and do better and not abuse the medicine we got on . He spends 5 days out of the 7 day week at home dope sick frome taking more of his methadone than suppose to he has no life he has not made any productive steps in 2 years. I tried to tell him he didnt listen . I hope u do ur reasearch and get off that methadone but im gonna tell u now its very hard to do .

You haven't been on it long enough or you may be one of the fortunate ones that does not gain the weight. I was never heavy or obese and I put on 70 # within 10 months. I used to weigh 150 and went up to 230, lost 20 so it was then 210, but now I go between 210 and 215. I diet and eat healthy and I am active I attribute some of my weight gain to getting older I am now 47. This is not acceptable for me I hate it and hate my body every day. I used to feel beautiful and sexy and was proud of my figure now I am embarrassed of the way I look.
I have been on suboxone for 4 yrs and 7 months I have no plans on getting off in the near future, I have tried weight watchers and had great success in the past now it has not worked and the same with a gym and working out. I don't know what to do but to just keep on trying to loose weight.
Good luck to you on your recovery and I am happy for you to have not gained weight.

I forgot to tell you that suboxone isn't good for your teeth either. I have had so many cavities, little cracks of teeth fall off , root canals, fillings. Ya, it,s no better than methadone for your teeth, think about it you have this tablet dissoling under your tongue everyday some people a few times a day, what do you think those chemicals do to your teeth? Sorry to be such a bummer but's what has happened to me and many others maybe you will be lucky with that as well as the weight gain? Again best of wishes to you!

I have been on suboxone for a little over a year now. I take 1 eight mg strip once a day. I wanted to stay on it due to the fact that it helps with my restless leg syndrome. Before starting suboxone, I was taking 5-6 300mg of Neurontin a day. Now I only need 1 Neurontin a day to alleviate my RLS. I've tried EVERY medication out there for RLS and none worked. However, 5'7" tall and used to weigh 125. I HAVEN'T changed my diet at all except for eating less than I used to and I weigh 172 pounds now. My whole body is swollen and I have to take a water pull every day and stil not much relief from the swelling. I'm always up moving around doing something bc I hate to sit still. I've always been like that. Now I detest my body and am determined to get off of suboxone. It's a wonderful drug that really helped with my opiate withdrawal and I will never take another narcotic pain pill ever again because that's why I had to be put on suboxone. I've heard that the withdrawal from suboxone, even in tapered amounts it still really hard to go through. But I wish you luck and hope I helped u out a little bit.

This is my second time trying Suboxone. Due to the fact that this is my second attempt to get off of Methadone. The first time was about seven years ago and I never gained any weight from the Methadone nor did I from the Suboxone when I was trying to get off it. Now seven years later I gained a lot of weight from both of these. I'm assuming it's from me getting older??? Any ways, I really hate it and it makes me all most want to stop taking the Suboxone this time, but I won't. I keep telling myself that yes I have gained about 30 pounds, but I started that gain from the Methadone and if I keep on the right track and complete my Suboxone program I will start having the weight disappear after I am done. Remember it's not fat it's the drug. You really don't have to be on Suboxone for a year or what ever, really just a month is all your body needs. Any longer is just your addictive behavior saying you still need it. In return is the voice we all will be fighting with for the rest of our lives. Keep strong and you will succeed! Oh yeah, and yes Miralax is awesome to take for the constipation. ;)

I have been on Suboxone for about three months now and I have gained 20lbs. I haven't changed my diet or my workout. I came to this site looking for the answer about weight gain and it seem like everyone else hasn't gained sig. weight. Maybe it is just how the body reacts to the drug. Other than weight gain, Suboxone is a miracle!! I took 10 Vicoden 750mg a day and I have no urge to take any now!!!

people who abuse their meds are merely dumb. like xanax, why would you wanna hardly remember anything the first week, and then wanna to be freaking out for the rest of the month. Not to mention, all kinds of places overly-perscribe and all kinds of people overly take! suboxone is good but i don't see myself taking it for more than 6 months. IF you are on anti-depressants, or any other mind adjusting drug....Make sure is safe!! WILL MAKE YOU CRAZY

Don't be so judgemental, we are all human and NObody is perfect obvisouly ppl abuse their meds because they have an addiction problem just like you or else you would not be taking Suboxone. Come back in 6 months and let me know how it's going, I wish you the best of luck! But you can't condemn people that take it for longer periods or if you end up being on it longer than 6 months. Just go with the flow and let yourself heal...I wish you peace and much success!

Look, who are you to talk about people abusing meds. I agree with the statement saying that you wouldn't be on Suboxone if you hadn't been abusing meds yourself. Stop judging people please. Leave that up to GOD!

I was on methadone for 7 yrs. I was on 155 mg at one point, totaled 3 cars the first year I was on it because it made me so drowsy. I was VERY lucky nothing ever came of it except for a few violations. As far as the weight gain, I gained about 20 lbs. I found out about suboxone 3 yrs ago and immediately wanted off the methadone. I quickly tapered down to about 85 mg. then for the next year went down the required 25 mg. They suggest that if you are going from methadone to suboxone. It was the best decision I made in a long time. I feel normal, only have to go once a month and not every day, no drugged feeling, my weight dropped, I got a great job, I can go on family outings without having to worry about the liquid handcuffs. Methadone is horrible unless you were a real hard core drug user. I highly recommend going to the suboxone. You see life in a whole new light. Good luck and god bless.

I agree, it is a miracle!! as far as the weight gain, have you had your thyroid checked recently? If not you should look into asking your doc to do some labwork. It could be a medical reason.

Honestly? I feel the same way about xanax. I had 2 inlaws in their early 30's die from xanax OD. Its a scary drug. As far as your 6 month plan, I think that is great that you have a deadline. I wish you the best of luck. If it doesnt happen dont be too discouraged, just keep trying. the best way to get off of anything though is with a carefully thought out plan. You need to allow yourself plenty of time to taper off, dont try to do it to quickly or you will most likely fail. ( i know from experience)
I understand where your coming from, but judging others isnt going to help you. Every one of us are addicts no matter how we got here, IE whether it was because we were prescribed oxycontin for a serious illness for a prolonged amount of time or because someone went out and decided to try heroin and got hooked instantly...they say you can get hooked the first time you try it. Until people stop judging, IMO, we will never get a grasp on addiction in America.
Good luck and god bless!

I totally agree with you @comments. I have suffered impossible constipation since I have started suboxone and depression. Also it is a wonderful thing to get a sober support network, which I still must do.

@comments I have seen on the suboxone film for 9 months now. I'm experiencing depression, anxiety and I also have loss 20 pds. How can I halt the weight loss and the doctor's want to put me on Prozac what do you think?

I have had the exact same side effects and it certainly makes me consider going back! I hate that the only thing that doesn't give me cravings to use makes me depressed, unmotivated, and do nothing but eat sweets (ice cream in particular). I've gained 15 lbs in 3 weeks and it's seriously depressing. That, on top of what I believe suboxone causes depression! And oh, the constipation.... worse than ever! I've never had a problem going to the bathroom! Some miracle drug! :( I so badly want to wean myself off, but I relapse every single time. :(

I have been on suboxone for 5 months now. 8mg per day. I have gained about 50lbs in just the first 4 months. That is crazy. I weigh 240, which is the most I've ever weighed in my entire life. This is very dangerous for me, because it makes me very subconscious about myself and depressed, as well as that its not exactly very healthy to be over weight anc causes me to have less energy and not feel great natrually. It sometimes almost makes me want to go back to using heroin just to take some of the weight off... wow that sounds really crazy I know..but thats how addicts think. Anything to justify.. trust me, I don't think that I'd actually do that. I'm to strong now in my recovery to let that thought manifest itself into action.

Hey, First of all, thank you for the initial posting of the question!! I feel a little bit better now that I have evidence of other people going through the same issue as I am. I just turned 24 years old this past summer, and I stopped taking oxys around August or September of last year. Initially, I HATED taking suboxone! It gave me such a terrible headache, stomach ache, and most of all, the taste was so awful!
BUT..... after I stuck with them for about a month to two months, I was wondering why in the world I ever started taking pills in the first place! .. Such a waste of good, hard earned money. :(
Anyways, as far as the weight gain and other side effects.....
ugh. weight gain central for me after I started taking subs. All this time, I really wasn't sure why either. I've actually had less of an appetite than ever before, I still get up and stay fairly active even though I lost my gym membership since I had other more "important" priorities... SMH. I have not stepped on a scale since I noticed the weight gain, because frankly, scales are evil and I don't like to get onto them unless I'm forced to! However, according to my pants (that I cannot fit into anymore, at all) I am pretty sure I've gained about 30-35 pounds or so... and I'm only 5'2" with a starting weight last year of 125. THAT'S A LOT OF WEIGHT!!!
Initially, I went into a deep , deep depression, and didn't go out in public for about a month because I was so embarrassed. I have always been fit, able to eat some sugars, and snack foods (though I never had an appetite for them until I stopped taking pain meds, which is a whole different story..) I am curious though, have any of you had any issues with skin irritations or allergic reactions relating to complexion after taking subs for awhile?????
I started having skin issues as soon as I started taking the medication, but I was in denial about the skin issue relating to the drug. Mostly because I dont know what I would do without this amazing medication!

If anyone could let me know, that would be very helpful!
And has anyone been successful with losing weight WHILE on suboxone?? or do you think that I would have to taper off of the subs in order to start losing weight??

Thanks again!!! :)

Amen to that! I don't know what to do!!!! I almost want to stop taking subs, but.... it's such a life saver, that I dont know what else I would be able to take to help me stay off of the narcotics and such. Have you had any luck with the weight loss or kicking the suboxone "sweet tooth" habit??? I cannot seem to stop eating the fiesta starbursts or ice cream.
Also, I have been taking subs for a year as well. I'm wondering why they haven't linked "weight gain" to the list of suboxonen side effects yet..? I am thinking because it is a fairly new drug...? But, who knows! Maybe it would be "bad marketing..". ha.
Thanks for helpin me out! You're not alone on the weight gain! It for sure is YUCKY!!!!
