What alternative medication if any that could be suggested for amlodipine. I am researching. I know that my doctor has the last word. This one is causing serious swelling of my feet. Is it correct to assume that this medication is exclusive and no other can replace it? Don't think so.

Hi, Derrick! Sorry about the edema problem that you're having.
There are many other medications available that could replace it, but it depends on what you're using it to treat.
Are you treating high blood pressure, or some other cardiac issue?
If you're just treating hypertension, you may do well with Metoprolol.

But a cardiac issue could require a medication in a different class, such as Atacand.

I'm Diabetic on Insulin R, Lantus and metformin. I'm also on Amlodipine, Losartan, Atenolol, Natrilix SR for BP, and the statin Simvor.
My problem is moderate to severe oedema of my left leg and foot, and mild oedema of the right leg and foot .
The oedema is related to the 10 mgs. Amlodipine which I take daily. The oedema causes me much anxiety, though not otherwise problematic. Is there a safe alterative preparation to the Amlodipine to get rid of the oedema?

I hv been taking Amlodipin 5 mg since 20 years along with Bisoprolol 5mg, Remipril 5mg , Atrovastatin and Asprin since 5 years as I got mild CAD/ ISD 5 years back
Recently I visited a Dentist who said stop taking Amlodipin as your Gums are getting harder and ask your doctor an alternate for Amlodipin.
Please suggest alternate to Amlodipin

There are a gazillion BP meds on the market-ask your doc to prescribe another similar one that he receives samples of from a drug rep. As long as there is a legal patent on the drug (and it hasn't expired-I believe patents run for like 5 to 7 years) a drug rep generally has copious amounts of samples they are happy to leave the doc. He then can supply them to you on a monthly basis. Be honest, explain to doc your financial predicament, have him try you on similar meds and when you find one you tolerate well that controls your numbers start getting monthly samples. My husband has no medical insurance and his doctor has kept him on samples for the last 15-20 years!

dear derrick....you could try to use a homeopathic medicine such as ferrum phos 3x beside amlodipine, for 2 weeks and your edema could possibly be cured...and you may find that it's even better for your health.

I've been on Amlodpine Besylate. 5mg for about 8 months and my doctor up it to 10 last month. Since I been taking it, experiencing right eye runs, feeling like rocks in my eyes at different times. My blood pressure been all over the place.

Stop taking Amlodipine! I have been on this and it causes ankle and knee swelling and nausea. I couldn't walk last week because my knees hurt so much and they want to do a knee replacement. I stopped 8 days ago and I have 0 pain in my knees now, no nausea, but my BP is higher. Going to the Doctor tomorrow. It also made my face so red that I looked sunburned.

Greta,
I had problems with just Amlodipine. I stopped taking it and I feel much better. It has a list of side effects a mile long and I had a lot of them. Sad thing is, I have seen so many Doctors about my knees swelling and really hurting and they didn't put it together. I stopped taking it on my own and I won't be taking it again. The very drugs they give you to make you better are toxins....

My experience with Amlodipine is that 5mg Amlodipine Besylate causes severe swelling, while 5mg Amlodipine Maleate does not. It is worthwhile to try the Maleate - component of Amlodipine if the swelling is your only concern. God bless.
