Will Oxycontin Be Changed Back To Original Formula (Page 19)

is Oxycontin going back to their old formula? OC instead of OP.
BL you obviously are in the US & I don't know what your angle is, are you a patient with chronic pain or a junkie? If you look back to early posts on here you will find some from junkies telling people how to make the new tablets abusable. Its a really s***ty thing to do, post stuff like that on a forum where patients with all manner of pain are struggling, after this medication was changed. You seem to have limited knowledge on this subject, so its better you don't give information to others who need answers. There is one reason for the reformulation & that is greed by The pharmaceutical companies that make & distribute it. Junkies abusing the OC formula just gave them an excuse, the new formulation becomes a new patent, & no other company gets a look in. John D. thanx for the information you provided, my chemist was told the generic would be out mid August but if as you say the PBS have knocked it back it will be ages. I see my pain specialist next week, ill see what info he has & let you all know. Just a passing thought, addicts will always find a way to abuse drugs, if they cant use one type they will just shift to another. They are chasing a high to feel good, myself I have no idea what it feels like to be high, the medication reduces my pain from a level 8-9 often 10 down to a 5-6 if Im lucky. BL you say pain doesn't kill anyone, you mustn't have the pain for which these medications are intended. When you wake up in the morning (if you could get sleep) & it hits you like a smack in the face with a bat. You cant move until your morning dose starts to work & your whole life stopped because of a disease thats destroying your body internally with no way of stopping it. Tell me how no one has died from this sort of pain BL, cause i can send you a list of people now deceased, that couldn't live in the same pain that i face each day. You know nothing BL.
They will not bring the original formula back. Preventing people from abusing this med is top priority. Chronic pain won't kill you, drug addiction will.
Bugger changing to Targin I went from 55mg x2 per day and 2 oxynorm per day for breakthrough pain since using the op oxycontin reformulation they do not work properly at all and did not control my pain also it gave me some wierd side effects I was on the original oxycontin for yrs so my dr has left me on oxynorm 20mg x2 per day and and changed me from oxycontin reformulation to MS Contin morphine 100mg twice a day 12 hours apart like I would the oxycontin since changing to morphine my pain is now controlled again I am happy I will ony go back onto oxycontin if they bring the original ones back also there are heaps of generics for morphine I have used the apotex morphine controlled release and they are good
BL oxynorm is oxycodone with no other chemical/drug Targin is a brand of its own, which has oxycodone & naloxone in it. This drug was made primarily to help with constipation, a problem most people on long term narcotic medications face. It seems to be a good option for some although for those on larger doses of meds wont be able to change to Targin alone, it hasnt been trialled on high doses. Doctors are trying patients on a combination of Targin & oxycontin for those wanting to change. I havnt tried it as I have allergic reactions to many medications, & changing is a last resort for me. If i change meds it means a couple of weeks in hospital minimum to make sure I dont have an anaphylactic reaction. If they dont release a generic oxycontin & Im still having problems getting my pain under control, my only real option is going to be fentanyl patches. I really dont want to have to resort to that, its such a strong medication, & i hate the idea of having to take that to control my pain. John D If you get any new info id appreciate it if you can post asap, i have an appointment with my pain specialist late next week & this will be our main focus atm. Thanx for all your help.
You are wrong about oxynorm In Australia oxynorm has only oxycodone as it's active ingredient and it is an instant release capsule comes in 5mg' 10mg' 20mg capsules it's is straight oxycodone hcl and has no naloxone in it at all the only painkiller that has oxycodone and naloxone in it and that is called Targin and it's a controlled release tablet and has oxycodone/naloxone in it and taken twice a day 12 hours apart where as oxynorm is taken every 4 to 6 hours for breakthrough pain you need to learn more about narcotic anagesia pain medications you are giving people wrong information man
Hey Michelle, no I am not a pharmacist. I am just somebody like yourself, however has made a lot of phone calls and e-mails trying to get to the bottom of what's going on. Now by my understanding is the Government gave the nod to generic oxycodone. Two brands Apotex and Sandoz met all the requirements of the Australian therapeutic goods registry. (So the product was made and analyzed). But on August 1 the Pharmaceutical Benefits scheme did not approve listing/contributing to these products. Meaning basically it would be expensive. Therefore both brands decided against making the product for Australia...... An employee of Apotex told me there was to be 1 company still going ahead and to have your pharmacies ask the suppliers if they know of it. But I don't know how that could be the case when only Apotex, Chemart, Terry White (all three being actually Apotex) and Sandoz are registered with TGA.
PBS (Pharmaceutical Benefits scheme) will be looking at this again on December 1st. As they do with all products each April 1, August 1 and December 1. Sadly it has been 4 months since the OP's came out and its another 4 months until maybe a generic comes out yet.... Not very happy.
If anyone does find out any different please add.

Oxynorm contains oxycodone with naloxone. It was just approved in the US a few weeks ago under the name of Targiniq ER.
My post was for Robert. Sorry.
You are one of the lucky ones & probably in the minority, if OPs relieve your pain with no side effects, I think you are very lucky.
Hey John D are you a pharmacist? Ive been having this same discussion with my pharmicist, she told me they had been advised of generic versions also, i havnt been there the last week or so, but havnt heard that this will not be the case now. If you are a pharmacist, do you have many of your customers reporting problems with the OP formulation? I just dont know what to think, Im on a high dose of oxycontin but have been stable at that dose for about 4 years & I havnt had to use break through medications at all (i prob could have used it here & there, but i try not to take anymore medication than is absolutely necessary.) i only take oxycontin because its impossible to function without them, the pain from my disease is unrelenting & there are no real treatments available to help beyond pain relief. Robert Im really happy for you, that you get the same relief from the new oxycontin formula without any side effects. Not everyone reacts to medication the same way, & one different ingredient can make a lot of difference in the way one person absorbs a med to another person. Chemicals react differently for different people & because you are ok it is not the same for others. I wish i could change to another medication such as MS Contin or Tramadol but i have serious reactions from both, i have an anaphylactic reaction to morphine & seizures from Tramadol. I dont have options & now the one medication that worked for me, is not working the way it was. I dont abuse the medication & my GP who is now actually an addiction specialist, he would be very quick to notice if I was abusing my medications in any way. I sincerely hope that mundipharma havnt won, its certainly very unfair & is going to leave me in a difficult position, I really have no idea where im going to ho from here.
Oxynorm has oxycodone the same active ingredient as what's in oxycontin oxynorm is instant release capsules and comes in 5mg '10mg '15mg '20mg strengths
Dox what is oxynorm?
No mate these oxycontin reformulated new ones will be the only ones now they are tamper proof so people can't abuse them and they say if broken up it's supposed to retain its controlled release properties! Has op marked on the pill instead of oc stamped on them they do not work for pain at all have a read of my post below this I not long wrote about oxycontin reformulated they are horrible mate I have swapped from oxycontin to MS Contin morphine it is way better than the oxycontin op formula
I was on OxyContin old formula for quite a few years due to chronic pain I have and all my problems I used to take 40mg twice a day with two oxynorm 20mg instant release twice a day for breakthrough pain and that worked great for me I was using the oc's for yrs then one day went to my monthly drs appointment in Australia and I went to the chemist to get my scripts filled and notice that the oxycontin was in a new package and the box was different and said oxycontin reformulated I didnt pay attention to start with then I took one and it barley felt like I had taken a 10mg oxycontin old formulation oc and provided me with no pain relief took so long to kick in I mean hours and when it did I didn't feel much also was getting some wierd side effects from them making me feel yuk in the belly and worsening anxiety also a horrible light headed feeling I told the doctor at my next visit so they increased the dose to one 40mg oxycontin op and one 15mg op that's 55mg and extra 30mg of oxycodone it wasn't helping by upping the dose at all I have now just changed to MS Contin morphine 100mg twice a day 12 hours apart and still take oxynorm 20mg instant release twice a day each capsule is like taking 4 endone at once or if you were in USA it would be like taking 4 Percocets without the acetinamophen aka paracetamol in it the new oxycontin op sucks for pain and dosen't help I do not abuse my medications I depend on them to get through my daily activity but them oxycontin ops are bad not good for anything pain I can say that the MS Contin is working great for me the dr had to calculate my dose of oxy and get it right to Convert me to morphine 55mg of oral oxycodone is equal to just under 100mg of morphine so now Instead of the new oxycontin reformulated tablets I now take 2x MS Contin 100mg twice a day 12 hours apart and 2x oxynorm 20mg instant release and some 2x Valium/antennex 5mg for back spasm my pain is controlled again thank god people swap to MS Contin it is made by mundipharma the same makers of oxycontin there are generics made by apotex and sandoz also and they have not been reformulated in anyway at all I hope this post helps some or you change to morphine from oxycontin ops to get your pain relief controlled
I've been on the real oc for seven years and I've been on the zoo's since they were put on the market I've have A lot of medical problems broken neck broken back 2 broken ankles numerous other internal problems I've never missed use none of my medicine ever and for those that do that's on them but want the truth from me using my break threw pain medicine(as prescribed of course) I real think the op are just as good as the oc this is only me but I do my medicine, as prescribed like clock work and the op formula for me is great. I've been in the purdue program for many years and thank them for what they done for me if wasn't for them I would get no medicine and why I'm saying this is because. They don't have to give me this medicine but they do cause they no I need . it don't abuse it and very grateful for it like said reason why say that is cause I trust what they say and me taking them I haven't noticed one thing that has changed from oc. to ipso thank you purdue that my honest opinion thanks for listening

From there once the patent expired I had been in talks with Apotex and Sandoz. Both generic companies who provide to Canada a Generic Oxycodone and had also registered with the Australian register of therapeutic goods..
search-au.funnelback.com/s/search.html?query=OXYCODONE&collection=tga-artg
Apotex had hinted they would be going ahead in Australia only to pull out. Sandoz on the other hand was fully committed and ready to launch. I had spoken with an official who not only confirmed the were preparing to launch in Australia, but got give me all dose sizes, packaging sizes and the process that would follow. Firstly a letter going to the different pharmacies, than the suppliers from there can take any requested order from any pharmacy.
My Pharmacy mentioned getting the letter than tried to order. The suppliers had none and could not provide. I than called Sandoz to ask what was going on. From here an official said Sandoz will no longer be making a generic Oxycodone in Australia. (WTF). I asked why and how could this be possible. I was told they were not at liberty to say.
Two major generic pharmaceutical companies pulling out at the last minute. I think Purdue has (with all their propaganda) won. 3 days ago I was 95% sure of seeing a generic product on shelves within a week. Now I believe we will not be seeing this in Australia.
I would like to thank Mundipharma Pty Ltd for caring about nobody other than their pockets. They don't care about abuse. They don't care about the public. "Tamper proof" has been available since 2010 yet only put on shelves of countries when the original patent is ready to expire.
Quote: A spokeswoman for the federal Department of Health said there was a need for a variety of oxycodone drugs in Australia, and not just the tamper-resistant formula.
"In deciding on the availability of medicines in Australia, the needs of very sick patients is given priority over deterring drug addicts from illegally misusing prescription medicines."
End quote.
Obviously Federal department of Health does in fact care more about deterring drug addicts than very sick patients. OP Oxycontin Does not work as well. It has horrible side effects and is pushing addicts to H or where not available Fentanyl patches....
If generics do get canned, I urge the public to join in creating a petition.
I also am on OC for chronic pain and I know for a fact that It is not the same..I am afraid in the future they are going to find out that It does damage to intestinal tract..I have excessive stomach pain and gas after taking. As for trying to eliminate abuse,i have to take extra to relieve my pain, oppose to before...Purdue needs to study more and not just look for money making
Hi jeanie I have been on OxyContin for a few yrs now due to chronic pain problems I have all through my back and legs I was always on the original oc at 40mg twice a day 12 hourly apart and oxynorm 20mg x 2 per day I still take the oxynorm 20mg 2x day I went straight from the oc one day got my monthly prescription the next and got the OxyContin reformulation 40mg and it felt like I hadn't had any pain relief at all only my oxynorm for breakthrough pain my dr is working with me at the moment but only keeps increasing the dose I went the other day to the dr for my monthly and now I take 1x40mg and 1x15 mg that's 55mg twice a day including my oxynorm 20mg x2 twice a day that is 170mg now 30mg increase and not much of a difference still the people abusing them ruined it my pain is now uncontrolled since taking OxyContin reformulation the oxynorm still works like normal but it is instant release 20mg capsule just like 4 endone at once
Jeanie, im sorry i couldnt have been more helpful. Im sorry you dont have any decent options to help with your pain. I know forums aren't always the ideal place to go into details, i hope you have ppl you can talk with about what your going through. Its very hard for others that have no serious health issues to understand, no matter how hard they try to. I wish you all the best, & I mean what I say, if you need a shoulder or need to just vent Im more than happy to listen. Cheers- Michelle
Michelle, Thank you for info & trying to help. Unfortunately, I live in a very rural area with few options. Plus, I don't have the money or the means to go elsewhere. I did go to the only local pain clinic, 60 miles away & saw a pain specialist. The pain specialist did try many of the treatments you mentioned & I really stuck with the treatments & gave them ample time to help. However, nothing really helped, & because nothing helped, my primary doctor decided that the OPs were good enough for me. There's only 4 doctors in our rural town & they all work together so no chance of switching docs. My only choice is to return to the pain clinic, but it's too costly to go there again & they really didn't help me the last time. Apparently, my doctor believes that the pain clinic should have been the answer to all my prayers, but since it wasn't, he is going to leave me in a dark limbo on the OPs that do nothing for me, except make me sick, depressed & fatigued.
