Tramadol Classification
UpdatedIs Tramadol a controlled substance, or is there any type of narcotic in them? I would really appreciate any reply. I would like to know ASAP if possible. It has been subscribed to my 16 year old son and I would like to know about the drug as soon as I can. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much! Hope to hear from someone real soon. Thanks again!
I was recently given Tramadol and was surprised by all the labels on the bottle for a non-narcotic medication. Supposedly it is NOT a narcotic medication. I asked my friend if she's ever heard of it and she said she gave it to her 12 year old daughter for a full year with no side effects.
I was browsing this web site for info on another drug out of my usual practice domain and ran across your question. Since I use this in my practice I will give you some answers. Tramadol (Ultram) is a controlled substance but supposedly non-narcotic. However it does manifest some of the same effects a narcotics. It does help pain, but also gives euphoria in a certain amount of patients although not to the extent of other stronger narcotics.Short term there is nothing wrong with using this for pain just like any other drug. However when I have patients request this long term it can become a problem just like any other addictive substance.I have had patients seek this drug just like any other narcotic and rarely (twice), I have had to detox someone off this. If this is for a short term problem (like a fracture or something similar), I would not be concerned.Like any other narcotic medication prolonged use (over a month more or less) can be a problem and you need to be careful. Hope this helps you. ortho doc
Dear ortho doctor, thank you SO much for taking the time to reply. You were extremely helpful, and answered my questions to a T! Thanx again. If you can (and if you will), drop me a line when you get the chance. There may be more I would like to discuss with you. I really hope you see this once it is posted because I would like to get an e-mail from you if you will. Also, jen jen, thank you for your response also. Thanx for taking the time to reply.
I was trying to email Ortho Doctor with a question and clicked on report abuse on an accident. My question is this Dr. I have herniated discs (2) compression of thecal sacs and herniated discs, bulging in low back. Well, my neck is the problem. I ended up going to pain mgt. because I would wake up in so much pain and when sitting at a desk at work my neck gets cramps, etc. The Dr prescribed Oxycodone HCL they are little green tablets. My sister informed me they are morphine. I am confused. Also, a recent e.r. doctor I had to see prescribed tramadol and was wondering if weaning off Oxycodone and onto Tramadol would be good or what do you suggest? Also, my sister, she did say that Norgesic Forte helped her with muscle spasms. I did notice that when I do not take my medication I feel like I have no energy. Can you give me an opinion? Thank you so much.
IT IS NOT CLASSIFIED AS A NARCOTIC BUT IT MOST DEFINITELY IS. DOCTORS STILL HAVE YET TO CATCH UP AND REALIZE THAT THIS STUFF IS A SERIOUS OPIATE THAT IS MORE ADDICTIVE THEN VALIUM AND/OR VICODIN. I KNOW BECAUSE I GOT ADDICTED TO ULTRAM AND WAS ADDICTED FOR 3 YEARS. THAT STUFF GAVE ME SUCH A FALSE SENSE OF HAPPINESS THAT IT IS INCREDIBLE. LIKE I SAID, DOCTORS NEED TO CATCH UP TO THE TIMES AND DO MORE RESEARCH ON THIS STUFF.
i do agree on all the side affects and i would like to get off if there any one that knows on a place to contact please let me know i scared of all the affects when i try to stop
thank you
to Bear - don't bother trying to come off yourself. If you are already addicted then it is dangerous to come off of it now without the help of some other medication. Tell a doctor or physiciatrist and they will give you something. You need a sedative and something to control your blood pressure, while you taper off the tramadol. A doctor should help you-just pick a doctor that is not too old and primitive-pick a younger doctor.
Ultram seems to be loved by some people yet other people derive no pleasure at all from it. It does nothing for me in an addictive sense. However it doesn't relieve pain very well for me either. Seems like you were given the rest of the answers already.
tramadol/ultram is a non-narcotic, non-addictive medication that is used in the weaning process of patients on narcoti/anelgesic medications. best bet ask your doctor
one moe thing any coctor with any form of commom sense would not give to her if it was an addictive narcotic especially at her age, get a second opinion. ask her how it makes her feel. have her take a dose while you can be there to observe her. ask her to the kitchen, your bedroom or just have simple conversation. watch for slurred speech and squinted or glossy eyes. when she is walking make sure her gait is steady and that she isnt holding on to things when going from one place to another. you know her the best, you are her mother, just watch for any changes in her mental, physical and social interaction. ashley, lpn.
I was addicted to Ultram. It has potential to be very addictive, yet some people feel nothing from the tabs. I never felt any narcotic effects from my prescribed dose. But you should follow the script carfully. Withdrawl included heavy depression for days and extremely low energy along with shaky hands.
Ortho Doctor...you are very correct that Ultram is highly addictive for some folks;HOWEVER, you are INCORRECT about it being a controlled substance. As a pharmacist I can tell you that it is NOT a controlled substance.
Tramadol--Has anyone been told this drug will also hurt the kidneys? Also, if you are a diabetic you cannot take this drug, I am told by my doc.
It is not considered a federal drug but does have some of the afffects of opiates. One thing i noticed is it does make you drowsy like other opiates.
I take generic tramadol on once in a while for muscle pain or headache. There was a time when I was taking it every day, for over two months, and YES...it is addictive and uncomfortable to get off of. The thing with Tramadol is that your body develops a tolerance to it very fast...so the first two or three days are nice but then you get the same experience from taking opiates over th e;long term - being the dosage needs to always increase. I experienced opiate euphoria with it, some people do not. What many people do not know is if you take a daily anti-depresant, that can delete your body's abilty to experience any euphoria from opiate or opiate-like substances. So the bottom line is.....good for mild to medium pain......once in a while.....bad for your kidneys and liver if taken daily for the long term. Use with care!
Any medication dispearsed by the kidneys will have bad effects to the kidneys, however Tramadol was given to me instead of Lortab, when I had Kidney stones/infections. I couldn't take lortab, cause the minute it started to dilute in my system it made me sick.
YES it is a narcotic. it acts on opioid receptors like other narcotics. Although a very high dose is required for a high. many teens however, avoid this due to the nausea and constipation this drug causes.
I HAVE TAKEN TRAMIDOL FOR 5 YEARS FOR MY BACK AND NEVER SHOWN NO SIGNS OF WITHDRAW IF PEOPLE WOULD TAKE THEIR MEDICINE LIKE THERE SUPPOUSE TO WOULD HAVE THAT BIG OF A PROMBLEM
ultram/tramadol does have a narcotic base but it is so small it is barely noticeable.
I HAVE RSD IN BOTH OF MY FEET AND I NEVER KNOW WHEN IT IS GOING TO ACTUP!!
I HAVE SOME TRAMADOL BUT HAVE NEVER TAKEN IT DO YOU THINK THAT THIS MIGHT HELP THE RSD OR SOMETHING ELSE MIGHT????

No it does not show up in lab work. I have been on tramadol for about 15 years. I have RA and Fibromyalgia. I have had to take tests for clonazepam. I take for anxiety and insomnia. My doctor told me that they are supposedly working on it but as of 2020 they couldn't detect Tramadol. It helps some with my arthritis but I have never taken more than 3 in a day. Never felt inebriated or sleepy or drunk feeling. I saw that some people commented that there is a big difference between addiction and dependence on a drug. I don't care if I am dependent on a drug. If it helps me to live my life with little pain, I will take that!
I was an RN for 20 years Tramadol has never had any opiate ingredient it was known more as a glorified Ibuprofen with lift stomach upset recently A friend told me that it was classified as a schedule 2 and then less than remix the formula I do not understand why it would be in that category I think these politicians and the pharmaceutical companies are doing all this changing of issues when it comes to medication that is beneficial to our elderly with drugs such as Tramadol that could be prescribed by their family physician now they are required to go to a pain clinic now on our insurance a doctor's visit is 52 $75 a visit or go to a pain clinic and my visits average 272 as much as $400 a visit depending on whether I get 25 minutes or a full hour so I totally do not understand what classification is tramadol in my opinion it is a salon
My husband who is 63 y/o has been taking tramadol 50mg tid, and has outbursts of anger and mood swings which seems to be getting worse to the point I have had to leave three times while visiting him for a few days. He lives and works in Michigan, and I live in further south. Recently he was diagnosed with kidney stone, and as a result of pain, rages worsen. He was given more pain medication and I am afraid he will also become addicted to as well. I am fearful of him, as earlier while attempting to board plane for a visit to me, he said he was stopped by security for carrying a weapon, which was confiscated and he allowed to board. Upon his arrival, he was very hostile towards me complaining that I didn't look up to see him walk past me, etc. It was awful. We are in process of purchasing a home but due to him unpredictable behavior, I don't think is a good idea. I feel safety is first. He refuses to blame me for whatever he does or days or noise even when there is no noise. The comments about tramadol impacting personality is so correct in this case and explains exactly my experience. I want to write a letter to his Dr and request for safety sake, put him into detox or wean him off. He does have a history of drug and alcohol abuse.
How long does Tramadol 50 remain in your body before being excreted?
I was told by one doctor it's not a narcotic. But THE I Had A Pain Management Doctor Say It Is I'm So Confused 4
I totally agree so was I! Worst feeling was trying to stop it was pure hell! Worse then Vicodin and I was on both for 3 years!
Get away from tramadol if you can. You will build A tolerance quickly. It does help with pain but only blocks it. I finally got off after 3 yrs with gabapentin aka Horizant and the use of mild lorazepams for the heart rate withdrawal affects. Tramadol def should only be taken twice a day and wean off!!! I had depression, sweats, heart rate increasing out of nowhere, and honestly it's worse than being addicted to illegal drugs! Seek other methods if you can. It also causes constipation, urination problems and again dependency even taken as prescribed. In SC they just put it as a narcotic and selling on the streets like any other opiate. I'm now in pain management and had injections for my back. I have RLS legs and arms which gabapentin helps. Hope this helps!
Meli,
You're right to be concerned. Tramadol acts on opiate/opioid receptors, which is why you obtain the "good feeling" from it. Your doctor is a litlle cavalier about addiction. What he has said in essence is, "You could be hooked on H, but you're only addicted to codeine." Tramadol may be weaker, and dpendency may develop more slowly, and withdrawal may be somewhat less intense than other pain killers. But being addicted is being addicted - just a matter of the poison you're taking.
I have been taking Tramadol for over 3 years for back pain, bursitis in my hip and general pain (fibromyalgia?). I can take up to 150 mg a day if needed. I really don't want to take it but anti-inflammatory doesn't really work. I know I am building a tolerance to it because I started at 50 mg. It definitely gives me a euphoric feeling but it also relieves my pain and doesn't make me sleepy so I can function and exercise. Still I worry, that I am addicted to a pain killer. I've tried everything from acupuncture, chiropractors, yoga, massage and I never stop exercising because it makes my pain worse if I just sit on the couch!. I get steroid shots and ablation in my back and hip. Tramadol just helps me keep going. I am monitored by a doctor at a pain clinic and my doctor reassures me that I could be on much worse medications. I still wish I didn't have to be on anything and was pain free! At least I am not walking the house at night because I can't sleep because of the pain. That is what I was doing before I started taking Tramadol.
I have been on Tramadol for about a year for herniations and stenosis in both back and neck. I am young with 2 young children, work full time in a stressful job and am very busy. Pain hinders your mood, productivity and everyday life style if it is extreme enough. The reason for my pain is quite remarkable. I must have 9 lives because most peoples body would never had withstood with what I went through. I should had been dead. However, I live daily with pain and take into account how lucky I am and try to live my life to the fullest while giving back and not feeling sorry for myself. Therefore I take any where from none to 2 3x a day dependent upon my day. I have run out of it for days and have never had a feeling of withdrawl! Everybody is different and I can see maybe people with an addicting behavior becoming dependent. I do not or never had been addicted to anything. Therefore, everyone saying stop taking it because of an addiction really needs to look into why they are saying it...is it because you take a huge amount ? well then yes that is your fault for letting yourself get that far. I purposely will not take it a day or 2 a week just so I don't become addicted but I still can enjoy my life being pain free for most of the week! I am awaiting surgery once my kids get older but in the meantime I don't have any issue taking it! So for people looking it to take care of your pain because your pain has taken over your life like mine had...take it with the understanding that you must not take a large amount daily. I too like other people posted do not get the eupohoria feeling like others have posted.
