Theophylline Discontinued (Page 2)

I have been told that theophylline er is being discontinued. Is this true? I have taken it for years for asthma.
The newer versions do not agree with me - some have iodine which interfers with the effectiveness. I have found my solution - I fill my prescriptions from Canada. One of my Canadian brands was just discontinued and I found another - had to tweak the dosage but I'm all set now. Thank God I have US doctors who understand and write the prescriptions I need to get them. I also get my Foradil from Canada.
We've been getting our Theophylline from IsraelPharm.
You will still need a doctor's Rx.
Excellent service.
Listen to this! They are discontinuing Theophylline and want to circulate Symbicord! Read what it does!
SYMBICORT is delivered through an inhaler and can help you breathe better starting within 15 minutes.
SYMBICORT will not replace a rescue inhaler for sudden symptoms. Remember, medicines with LABAs may increase the risk of asthma-related death, and should only be used in those asthma patients whose long-term control requires both an ICS and a LABA.
Once your asthma is effectively controlled, your doctor will decide if you can stop taking SYMBICORT and may prescribe a long-term asthma control medicine such as an inhaled corticosteroid.

Yes, there are two manufacturers of it. One was really inexpensive, which they carried at some Costco Pharmacies. Some of the other Costco Pharmacies carry the other, and it's a lot more! I was hoarding the less expensive version, but was getting ready to bite the bullet and pay for the more expensive, but now that I've learned there is a pet pharma that carries it now in extended release, I'm going to go that route. Eventually the more expensive one will run out also, as neither manufacturer is making it anymore. Sad sad sad.
Just checked with my pharmacy and the price of Theophylline just went up from $40 for a 30 day supply to $130. Wow!
I agree, it's the pharmaceutical companies that are the problem. They don't want to make Theophylline anymore. This medicine works great for me, I've been on this medication since 1984 and I'm doing ok. i tried inhalers and they are bad and don't help me at all. I don't want to use prednisone either, it's toxic!
Thanks for that info about petmart pharmacy! I see that they have the extended release. Great to have an alternative to the compounding in New Jersey that isn't ER.
These comments regarding Theophylline for pets are wonderful, but what about the humans who need it - such as myself. I have tried the newer things, but none of them work for me. I get jittery and my breathing continues to get worse. My doctor told me last week in his opinion nothing works as well as Theophylline and he is confused why it is discontinued - except that it's cheaper and older which most younger doctors won't use. I'm very concerned for my health.
I leaned from my dog's cardiologist that the compounded theophylline is not extended release. The dosage and frequency has to be adjusted for that. Apparently there is another med that works as well as the ER theophylline but he is sending the info over to our vet. I'll share it here when I get the info.
Veterinary Pharmacies of America is a lot cheaper than the Costco price. 877-838-7979 is their number. Need to have a vet fax over a prescription and give several days for them to mail it to u but it's worth it. My Pomeranian has been on it for years.
My dog has been on theophylline for 2 years he takes 100 mg a day so when I found out I couldn't get it anymore I called around and found a manufacturer called diamond back that would make it the vet called ordered it for me it now cost me 60 dollars a month instead of the 8 dollars I was paying but at least I found something for him.
I give my dog Theophylline ER 100 mg. I get it compounded by Petmartpharmacy. They are the only place I found that will compound it at a reasonable price. The company is veterinarian owned & a small company but excellent customer service. Try them for your meds.
Read in below posts of a compounding pharmacy in New Jersey that makes it to order.
Has anyone else been trying herbal or natural remedies? I used to be a skeptic on all that kind of thing but I've been experimenting for months with different things including garlic for fighting off colds and respiratory illnesses and I've also discovered that ginger root is amazing for asthma and COPD and any kind of respiratory problems. It's a strong anti-inflammatory it acts as a Bronchodilator and acts as a mild expectorant. I've been using it for about a week now and I've had amazing results. I just take a piece of ginger root and chopped off about 3 or 4 decent size slivers and boil it in one cup of water for 5 to 10 minutes and then I pour it over green tea bags in my cup, let it steep for another 5 minutes or so then I add honey and sugar.. and then I take out the pieces of ginger ...and it's amazing!! I start coughing shortly thereafter, and it opens my airway up. I also inhale the steam from the pan while its simmering and it acts like a nebulizer! Give it a try and report back here with your results!
This message board has been a positive means of communicating to me that for whatever business reason, the manufacturers of this medication have stopped producing it. This board told me I can wring my hands or find a solution. I've chosen to put my energy toward finding an alternative by calling, doing internet searches and finding a new source over several months as my supply ran out. I'm glad I did. Found the NJ vet/human pharmacy on such a search. My dog has her medication, and I'm happy.
SO, WHY DISCONTINUE THEOPHYLLINE IF IT WORKS SO WELL? IF IT WORKS SO WELL, KEEP IT IN PHARMACIES WHERE IT CAN BE USED FOR WHAT IT IS MADE FOR! KIND OF ( BEATING A DEAD HORSE) RIGHT? WHY PUT THE CART BEFORE THE HORSE IF IT REALLY WORKS?
My druggist wasn't able to get my Theo 24 over 2 years ago. Switched to generic. Now it's gone too. Frustrated and scared doesn't describe my emotional state now.
I just checked with my pharmacy, they said my Theo 24 ER 200 mg is on a long back order and they don't know when they will be able to get it from the wholesaler. The pharmacist said that there are only two wholesalers currently in the US.
How can you just up and discontinue a medication that thousands of people have been taking for years? OUR LIVES DEPEND ON THIS MEDICINE! WHY DO YOU GET PEOPLE HOOKED ON THIS MEDICINE, THEN YANK IT OFF THE MARKET? I REALLY DO WANT TO KNOW THE ANSWER!
