Taking Hydrocodone For Depression (Page 21) (Top voted first)

Updated

I am wondering if anybody else out there has taken Hydrocodone and noticed that symptoms of depression are alleviated? I find that many of today's anti-anxiety and antidepressant drugs come with unpleasant side effects, whereas while taking Hydrocodone they aren't there. The caveat to all of this is that yes, I know that Hydrocodone and opiates in general can be addictive. So long term use would result in withdrawal symptoms. I'm just wondering who else might agree with me on this?

My personal intake of this particular MU agonist have been reduced. The risk of a accident occurring during operating a motor vehicle or high power equipment is a possibility very much leading to morbidity and mortality.
Off topic, I've never seen anyone impacted by a high speed train before this AM at 8 AM PST. My word, the teenage female was killed instantly. A true tragedy trying to "surpass " the train before it arrives at the point of the crossing. If this is too grafic, don't think on it too very sorrowful.

you make a valid point regarding operation of a motor vehicle. I usually take half of a 5/325 if I take it during the day - otherwise I can feel the effects of drowsiness. The lowest possible effective dose helps me with both the discomfort from arthritis that the anti-inflammatories do not resolve and mood.

S LEE yes hydrocodone I believe does amplify depression as I too have been on many anti depressants with no avail but I do also believe it is because of the pain we suffer and we cannot do the same as before this is my case anyway. I hope u find this helpful good luck stay strong.

Less than 100 years ago, when opiates were legal, they were often prescribed for depression. Opium was called Hil gul-plant of joy and considered God's gift to man. They were used for much more than pain-even children were common users. I suggest reading the books: Opium for the Masses by Jim Hogshire, the article Ignorance Kills by I don't know who LOL and The Plant of Joy by Sir William Osler and at least one book from this century from a recent doctor from here in Nashville, Opiates and the Bi-Polar syndrome by Doctor Robert Cochran. Um I think the title may be off but look him up. He wrote a few books based on cases. He prescribed what I think are suitable doses of opiates-240mg-360mgs a day. The medical community was not happy with him but his clients were referred to him from their psychiatrists from all over the nation. He cured those with multiple personality disorder, schizophrenia, bi-polar and more-opiates are necessary for some of us for more than just pain. Think about it. If I suffer allergic rhinitis, I don't need all the Benadryl and sinus meds. If withdrawals causes sneezing, watery eyes, runny nose them DUH! Opiates will fix ur sinuses! At one time they were prescribed for "things pertaining to a woman" that included cramps, fatigue, depression, inability to get a good nights sleep, irritability, hot flashes, night sweats and all other PMS or fibromyalgia symptoms, not just pain! During the 28th century you could not even consider yourself an author or artist unless you had "a healthy opiate addiction". America was built in the backs of coke and opiate filled workers-watch the documentary The house I live in......

Yes! Opiates were at one time considered the fisrt all natural antidepressant! The Plant of Joy, Gods gift to man. Opiates had very ,any uses besides pain relief. Dr. Robert Cochran of Nashville, TN prescribed larger than normal doses of opiates and cured folks of many things such as Schizophrenia, Multiple Personality, Bi Polar etc. and that was untill 2012.

LOL so does your doctor think you wont need the antidepressants forever? I dont see what difference it makes....and not everyone gets addicted. For six years my personal ( if I never had to count hours) dose has not gone beyond six per day. It has decreased when that other meds was stopped. So what logic will he use now? Let me quess, so e addicts are special tricky and lower their dose? LOL

I have Vicodin for chronic pain. I feel that it can increase depression. It does work for pain but I often feel very down after taking a few dosages. One pill really doesn't have an effect but when pain is worse and I take more than a few, I become very depressed. Wish this wasn't true because it would be a better medication if it didn't affect my mood so severely.

I found hydrocodone better than oxycodone for my depression and lack of energy. After 10 years of access to it, I can only handle 5 mg (1/2 tablet) maybe twice per day. I get sleepy and don't feel well if I take more. The small dosage changed me into an energetic, happy, enthusiastic person and I liked me better. Btw, I specifically responded better to half a 'lorcet' which was 10/650, but that is no longer available. I hope someday this will be all figured out and something will come available to provide relief 'on label'.

I've noticed that my oxycodone definitely relieves my depression. But I'd have to say the reason is obvious. The pain I suffer is demobilizing. Therefore my meds removes my pain and thus the reason for my depression. I don't think the reason is directly related to chemical reaction on the brain as it is a byproduct of feeling good and your brain taking note. I do realize that eather way you get the same results. But if your thinking opioids are going to be prescribed for depression, don't bet on it. Remember euphoria (the other way they relieve depression) from opioids isn't sustainable.
You will eather have to constantly increase the dose to maintain that state which will lead ultimately to your death! Or, if you are taking the same dose, your body will get immune to the euphoric effect. ( such as me) and the euphoria (antidepressant effect) is gone.

This is such an interesting post, how did you learn so much about the effects of Oxy and that you were deficient? I get a big boost in energy from Norco - but if I take too many -- like over 2 10/325's a day I will throw up or feel sick. Same with Percocet's. I can take 1 to 1.5 tabs a day and get a lot done, but any more and I feel sick to my stomach. I'd love to know more about the research around folks who have a low level of receptors (is that it?) a lot of these are located in the gut, btw, I just learned that. How interesting. Thanks for your post

Leanna4. Thank you for your concern. What were you taking the hydrocodone for? How long did you take them? What kind of withdrawal did you have?
I know of Dr. Amen but haven't read that book you referred to. Will get it. Thanks

was taking hydrocodone for menstrual cramps as it was the only thing that helped. After taking it for months I got hooked and abused it for maybe 2 years or more. I had to stop so I did and in doing so got very depressed and each day that I went without it, I got more depressed. Each day got worse and I felt so helpless. I was fighting this alone and it was extremely hard. I went through the entire process for a very long time. I wish I would have never started this med. Now I can see why so many Dr,s won't prescribe it any longer. It causes so many problems.

Originally prescribed vicodin 10/325 for back pain, which it helped, but the amazing thing was the depression and anxiety I had suffered from for years was almost completely gone. I'm productive, confident and am doing very well at my job. My wife monitors my use like a hawk and makes me feel bad for taking them now that back pain is gone. But I'm happy. I'm productive, I don't wake up with anxiety, nor do I have anxiety at work. I wish I was a chemist and new of a medicine that would affect the same receptors hydrocodone does. Every antidepressant I've taken makes my anxiety worse and makes me feel like a zombie.xanax is worthless for anxiety unless I take 4 or 5 mg, then I'm just falling asleep. Does anyone know of an antidepressant that will work in my body like the vicodin?

Greetings! I am a 30 yr chronic pain and depression sufferer. I agree that some pain meds help when traditional antidepressants do not. This is more of a numbing effect IMHO, and somewhat of a slippery slop. I do not know of a doc that will rx strictly for depression. Actually, having cp and depression puts my doc on high alert for any changes in pain med usage or misusage. I completely agree it provides relief, just have to be extremely careful to follow instructions to the T - showing compliance. I hope this makes sense and is of help.
