Taking Hydrocodone For Depression (Page 18)
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I am wondering if anybody else out there has taken Hydrocodone and noticed that symptoms of depression are alleviated? I find that many of today's anti-anxiety and antidepressant drugs come with unpleasant side effects, whereas while taking Hydrocodone they aren't there. The caveat to all of this is that yes, I know that Hydrocodone and opiates in general can be addictive. So long term use would result in withdrawal symptoms. I'm just wondering who else might agree with me on this?

NEVER EXPERIENCED WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS. You only wish you had more because THEY WORK FOR DEPRESSION. LORD KNOWS NOTHING ELSE DOES!

I found hydrocodone better than oxycodone for my depression and lack of energy. After 10 years of access to it, I can only handle 5 mg (1/2 tablet) maybe twice per day. I get sleepy and don't feel well if I take more. The small dosage changed me into an energetic, happy, enthusiastic person and I liked me better. Btw, I specifically responded better to half a 'lorcet' which was 10/650, but that is no longer available. I hope someday this will be all figured out and something will come available to provide relief 'on label'.

I took Hydrocodone 10/325 for years before my doctor switched me to Oxycodone but I did notice it greatly helped my depression symptoms. Although it was prescribed for pain, I did notice it significantly reduced my depression so long as I was able to take regular doses every 6 hours or so. Only thing is I dont believe doctors would ever prescribe Hydrocodone for that particular symptom and would instead elect to prescribe a medication specifically designed for that :>/

Herman2005 it sounds like normal antidepressants maybe ineffective for you.
I know several people who have this same issue. Their psychiatrists prescribed Ritalin or Aderol which is kind of a last resort treatment when conventional antidepressants don't work. The stimulants boost their mood and work fairly well from what I've seen in these people's lives. It basically saved them and gave them their lives back. One is a college professor PhD and the other 2 are high up within their companies. You should discuss the possible usage of one of the drugs I mentioned with your mental health care professional, don't suffer in silence and try to stay off Hydrocodone unless it's being used for analgesia. It will cause more problems down the road than its temporary mood boost today. Goodluck with your depressive disorder, it's more complex to treat in some people than others. Yours definitely isn't a here's a antidepressant pill now you're better...

Absolutely, yes! After 2 surgeries,I began to notice after I took my dose for pain the heavy cloud of depression was lifted. I have been treated for depression for 30 years...taken all the meds, cognitive therapy...everything. the only bad part is I know it will never be prescribed for an " off label" It would be so wonderful to live life like everyone else but I have a feeling it won't be prescribed for help with depression.

Regarding opiates and depression. I can not tell you how opiates have totally eradicated my symptoms of depression. In fact, I have said for years that I take them as an anti depressant more than a pain reliever and I suffer from chronic pain.

I take Wellbutrin for depression supplemented by L-Methylfolate, which is actually a special kind of folic acid that helps the Wellbutrin work more effectively, according to my doctor.

I was taking HYDROCODONE for pain after having an operation and found that it absolutely can be helpful. For depression I take one tablet and it works like a charm. I only take it, however, when I am REALLY feeling bad.

I would say that anyone with an addictive personality (alcohol, gambling, etc.) should exercise extreme caution in deciding whether to ask a doctor for a prescription for this medication. I think that there is more danger of becoming habituated to it than physically addicted

Many doctors here in NY are leery of
writing an Rx for Vicodin because last year a few unscrupulous doctors were busted for writing a lot of prescriptions (for cash) for opiate drugs and the state government has been scrutinizing doctors who write prescriptions for these meds.

I have Vicodin for chronic pain. I feel that it can increase depression. It does work for pain but I often feel very down after taking a few dosages. One pill really doesn't have an effect but when pain is worse and I take more than a few, I become very depressed. Wish this wasn't true because it would be a better medication if it didn't affect my mood so severely.

Folk who are treatment resistant may have Edogenous Deficient Syndrome--not enough pain or opiate receptors--unfortunately doctors won't acknowledge this--look up the article Ignorance Kills

Hydrocodone and oxycodone are made from Thebaine--it is the only NONNARCOTIC part of the poppy plant and it actually a stimulant though doctors refuse to acknowledge that.

LOL so does your doctor think you wont need the antidepressants forever? I dont see what difference it makes....and not everyone gets addicted. For six years my personal ( if I never had to count hours) dose has not gone beyond six per day. It has decreased when that other meds was stopped. So what logic will he use now? Let me quess, so e addicts are special tricky and lower their dose? LOL

Wow! I found out that I have low Thyroid. I have been begging doctors for help for over five years. Ive been prescribed four oxy 30mg a day and the first month I took six a day. Felt great! Volunteered alot plus did great in school. My dose jumped up to 15-20 a day! I found out that a medication I was taling, Phenytoin, when taken concomttantly with oxy causes hyper metabolizization. Ok so five years of 450-600mgs a day, trying to stay no more than 300mg. I stop taking Phenytoin, dose drops to 12 the following month it drops to 10, then eight. ok it finally gets down to between 5.2 -6 a day and of course doctor fires me. My current doctor I am trying really hard to stay at four but cant get below 5.2. I told them I stay in a state of PAWS even though I have oxycodone every day. I explain how can you go from 15 to 4 and not be affected? I think 6 is good because after almost six years, without external variables, my dose has never gone beyond six. It never will go beyond six. I don't feel high or feel anything and now with thyroid, am convinced its because of low oxy. I have found documentation indicating that even though opiates are co sidered depressants, they RAISE T levels!!! Tryig to stay at four oxy a day is literally killing me! Why prescribe additional meds withh side effects when you can just add two oxy a day to raise thyroid levels AND no side effects AND no more stress over being short for pill counts. My hears will probably blow up from withdrawal every miny for almost six years plus staying in PAWS...so yall who ate depressed find so eone to give you opiates. They only been illegal for 70-100 years and all the bi-polar, thyroid, depression, crime, mental illness in society is due to not enough opiates in our bodies.....we suffer from Chemical Pica and Edogenous Deficient Syndrome

I also feel great when I take a pain pill. I also take antidepressants, just to let you know, I suffer with clinical depression. My psychiatrist told me that people are born with opiates in their brains. Some of us are born with less than other people which defines the way we feel. If you take hydrocodone, it is an opiate, and makes up for your lack of opiates in your brain therefore alleviating your depression and making you feel good. Only problem is the addiction and the fact that you have to continue to up the dosage.

Hydrocodone gives me the same happy feeling but it doesn't last
Why can't they figure out what in the medication does that and develope something not as addictive

Yes I've noticed just a tiny amount of Vicodin (half a pill) will relieve me of severe depression like nothing else!! And no side effects! And I'm feeling very normal for that day! But I can't get a prescription... I only was given a prescription when I had a dental issue and that's how I found out about it!

I have suffered incredibly from depression for 40 years and hard work will not get you out of it. I have been on every anti-depressant on the market and some that are not. I have had Deep Brain Stimulation and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation and both failed. Luvox is the only med that has worked for me and it was miraculous. It only lasted a few years. When I fractured my hip I went on Vicodin. It made a amazing difference in my depression and anxiety. My Psychiatrist did not want me to stop it but, it is an opiate. What can you do?

I agree with you 100%. It resolves depression completely for me however nobody will prescribe it.

Hey there! Surprise! You treatment resistant depression is not treatment resistant--you are like EDS-endogenous deficient syndrome or, you don't produce enough opiates in your brain which is why the hydrocodone is the only thing that helps--look up the book by Dr Robert Cochran, Opiates and the Bi-polar also read the article Ignorance Kills
