Taking Hydrocodone For Depression (Page 10) (Top voted first)
UpdatedI am wondering if anybody else out there has taken Hydrocodone and noticed that symptoms of depression are alleviated? I find that many of today's anti-anxiety and antidepressant drugs come with unpleasant side effects, whereas while taking Hydrocodone they aren't there. The caveat to all of this is that yes, I know that Hydrocodone and opiates in general can be addictive. So long term use would result in withdrawal symptoms. I'm just wondering who else might agree with me on this?
I'm pretty sure that they have not even considered the fact that people will have liver damage and stomach damage from over consuming Tylenol and ibuprofen. These medications will be used in dangerously high doses by people trying to find relief.
Hi Lucy, back in the late 90's there was a huge push by chronic pain patients and doctors in general to recognize pain as something that should be aggressively treated with what works best for the Patient, especially opioids. They still are required to rate your pain on a scale of 1 to 10. I am providing this history, as all the sudden these experts are saying that is not the way to handle pain. You are smart doing things your prescribing doctor asks you to do. This will allow him /her be able to continue to treat pain. These are only guidelines, but a federal agency especially the cdc holds tremendous power. This is really going to affect the way new docs are trained, not so much those that have been around for 20 yrs. They will make sure that they cover themselves. If you want to read on this just Google 2016 cdc opioid prescribing guidelines. Best wishes
I actually saw a shrink 25 yrs ago who was a MD, with PhD in psychology. He understood the profound affect pain and depression play in how we uniquely process that pain. He agreed that it doesn't matter which one came first and also acknowledged that some respond better to opioids for this reason. Our society would never admit unless they to suffered from this insidious brain disease.
Can't be any worse than the cocktail of drugs you have to take for anxiety and depression and all the side effects that go with it.
I know this thread is old....but I can't believe what I'm hearing here. You guys keep taking hydrocodone for depression....and then you stop? You are REALLY going to know what depression is! Along with nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, eyes/nose running, sneezing, yawning, weakness, insomnia, muscle pain/cramping, restlessness/anxiety, hot and cold chills, skin crawling, and MAJOR depression to the point of being suicidal This is not very smart.
It is all relative to the dosage. Norco requires less of a dosage on a mg to mg basis. In other words, if you take 10mg of norco, to get the same pain relief would require a higher mg dose of morphine. This does not mean one is stronger than the other. Some do better with morphine, (I do), so my doc adjusts the dosage accordingly. You may have to try several narcotic medications to see what works best for you. This is assuming that you need a narcotic pain reliever. Hope this is of help. Best wishes!
Good am Jobe! I hope you are well. I read ur response regarding Norco and oxy..I didn't look at it that way. My Dr told me as long as I see him every 3mos, I can keep getting my meds. Bless him! He stated I've done everything and when one has had surgery, there's nothing else. So I'm good with that. My problem is I have neuropathy and when it flares up, I take Norco and it subsides. I truly don't want any more meds... I'm taking more than enough. It appears that some drs are scared to prescribe the Norco...but if it works, why take the patient off of it? That's making the whole situation worse.
I totally agree. Suffering from depression for a long time a nd a little hydrocone always helps when I can get it.
Obviously, you do not suffer from chronic depression. It is a chemical problem in the brain that only medication will resolve. It is like any other illness that requires medication. Would you tell a heart patient or diabetic patient or anyone with illness not to take medication?
I think you mean well, but you are mistaken about this. I am very spiritual but that does not mean that if I 'get closer to God or pray or repent' that my problem will go away. You are putting people in danger when you tell them not to take medication for chronic depression. It is not the same as a normal person's low day or feeling blue. Please, before you tell anyone else to 'control' their depression, do some real research.
I originally posted on this site several years ago about my use of hydrocodone for my depression. It is two years later. I had to stop. I began to feel hollow inside despite the low dose I was taking - my brain wanted more and the more I took, I just felt ill. I thought at first this was an answer to a prayer 20+ years of MDD and anxiety. Anyway, I am not bashing or judging anyone who can manage taking it and keeping it at a level that is helpful - I got to a point about two months ago where I knew I had a problem. I had it prescribed for surgery and had as much as I could get refilled. I never went beyond 4 pills per day even post op. After my post op I was getting by on 1 to 2 pills per day, but the day came where I started feeling numb and hollow and I knew getting a refill at this stage was going to be a challenge. For reference I am a 49y/o female - also going through mid life hormonal changes. What really helped me all around was getting my hormone levels checked and then working with my doctors to restore my very, very low estrogen and non existent testosterone. This did not "cure" me of my desire to take norco, but having my hormones in balance helped with my depression. I still take my depression meds and see a therapist, but I had to stop with the norco as I felt like bc of all the new regulations and because it stopped having it's "therapeutic effect" I had to put that habit to bed. So if you are a woman and you haven't had your hormone levels checked, I would advise it - so many women are misdiagnosed with depression when low hormone levels are a key piece of the puzzle. I understand many women are not able to or afraid to take hormones, only you and your doctor can make that choice. For me having my hormone pellets inserted every three months (estrogen and testosterone) makes me feel like a different person. I am not a health care professional so I don't know what works for everyone, but I have had over 10 years experience dealing with early ovarian failure and the havoc it can cause for your mental health. Norco definitely gives me a boost and helps with depression, but it can be a risky spiral as i recently found out...despite my very best efforts to "control it". Good luck to all who struggle with depression and pain! I know them both well.
I had to quit caffeine when i was pregnant, talk about depressing migraine headaches, lack of energy..Never say never. I did not think pain could get any worse. I just hope Gov. doesn't start making people wait 8 yrs to get prescription for Ice Tea. Yes it is addictive and there are withdrawal symptoms. But i did what i had to at the time for the better good. All by myself common sense is a b*** in America.
Hi Jobe! Good to hear from you...I don't know if anything or someone made a comment and took it to the extreme, but for ME, I just hope that maybe one person has or is going thru the same things I'm trying to deal with. I know how to talk to my doctor but different view points are interesting.
I love Jesus and God in him always in Prayer
Patty I personally found out that extended release/abuse proof opiates cause adrenal drainage and hypothyroidism in menapausal women who cannot do hormone replacement therapy.....as my life came to a screeching halt, I started looking into medicine interactions and found study after study in peer review articles claiming such..... Sadly I think it will take longer to become well again than it did to get this sick
Omg why can't the doctor's put 2and 2 together after all the things I have and symptoms. yes I am in meno after having a hysterectomy in 2011ra. oa.So many things to list I feel like I am fighting for my life everyday mentally and physically when will the war end
its becuse ins. co. n gov. took our Dr.s away the only thing speacialist do is over charge make u wait months for apt then say oh "thats not my speaciality " I want my Dr. Back
Yes I have tried several antidepressant meds none seem to help with my depression symptoms, one of my problems I struggle with is low or no energy to do the things I use to enjoy I suffer from a chronic pain condition and found that after taking 10 mgs. 4 times a day that I felt better!! Both mentally and physically so I agree with you best of luck to you
Posters,
Not to burst your bubble but the only reason your symptoms of depression are uplifted is REDUCTION of severe pain.
The only opioids that are proven to have a mood uplift are Oxycodone and similar.
The others are major CNS depressants and will make your mood worse over time.
I suffer Central Pain Syndrome. Some of the current pain medications I am on put me in tears, trust me I have an open door to Oxy liquid but won't abuse it to feel better.
Thank u but i have seen enough people n heard their stories. I would never have any thing implanted in my body, we dont have hospitals anymore. They're disease ridden concentration camps. Plus i was told by John Hopkins 4 yrs ago Fl gave me so many MRI n Cat scans same ones, wrong ones over n over again. I now have chronic radiation poisoning. John Hopkins said i could never have any kind of surgery again. My immune system is to compromised. I only had 2 days to stay in Baltimore before i had to come back to FL. my niece had to drive me. I was dying. I could not even get anti nausea med in FL. Im alone now n was forced back on medicaid because of Gov. Prick Scott n his murdering cut backs. I am just signing as many petitions as i can n fighting for Bernie Sanders. I had an older lady help me across the parking lot. She said she never stayed in FL for more than a week when she was from Switzerland. She said she could go to any specialist for $6.00 n all medication was $1.00. She said she would not risk getting sick in america having them take all her money, house n whatever they could get just because she needed medical care.
I recently read about a new anti-depressant medication in phase 2 clinical trials that targets the mu receptor affected by opioids. I wish I kept the link. But if this drug works, it may be a breakthrough in depression treatment.
