Swelling In Legs And Feet Levothyroxine (Page 5)
UpdatedI just started taking Levothyroxine 2 wks ago my legs and feet are swollen so bad by nite I can barley walk. They go down a little at nite but swell back. I am taking 25mcg and I am afraid to continue taking this med. Has any one else had this problem?
I too have severe swelling and I started after the med and my doctor. Gave me water pills to no avail it's been 6 months I'm still having problems. . I'm going to quit. The meds and look for a natural remedies . This is so horrible
I too have severe swelling and I started after the same med as you .and my doctor. Gave me water pills to no avail it's been 6 months I'm still having problems. . I'm going to quit. The meds and look for a natural remedies . This is so horrible
Why are you on two different thyroid meds? My levels went way up in November, and Dr changed my Levoxyl from 88mcg to 100mcg.
Since then the swelling of ankles and feet have gotten worse than they have ever been. Now since last week my calves are swelling too. I have had Hashimotos Tyroiditis for 30 years and this never happened before, even when my levels were off. I will call my Dr. tomorrow. I know I need Cytomel, as my T3 is 74, always high. Since some of the swelling went down on my left calf, there is a feeling of a big blister measuring about 3" around that scares me.
Yes I have so bad that I would wake up crying in pain that my legs hurt. i told my doctor but he said that wasn't it but the day after I stopped the medicine the leg pain left after 400 days and not to mention my hands were swollen so much I could barely use them esp in the morning. It has been a nightmare !!
You are on the wrong kind of thyroid you need to be taking T3 and T4 together
Sounds like you are unable to convert t4 to t3,and you need both
Talk to your doctor about adding t3 or switching to a thyroid that contains t3 and t4
Had the same problem with and take Armour thyroid my legs and feet no longer swell
Since i last posted about my dr. changing my levoxyl from 88 mcg to 100mcg, no changes in swelling, even though I was taking 20mg of lasix twice a day. The swelling remained mostly the same. but then my foot doctor cut my toenails and when he cut the left foot, the toe next to the big toe made me cry out because he hurt me. Later on that day, I started getting a burning pain on that toe, so by late evening the whole pad under all the toes were so painful, It was difficult walking, because my right leg is 1 1/2 inch shorter than my left leg and Because its painful I limp from that, but when this happened to my left foot, I was limping on both legs. if I didn't have my walker, I wouldn't have been able to walk at all. about a week later, for some reason, the same thing began to happen to my right foot too! and both big toes and toes next to them. I googled it and decided I have gout! When I read up on It, It said it could be caused from taking diuretics. Also any trauma could start it up, which was the cutting nails! I ordered Sports Research (SR) Tart Cherry Caps and have been taking 2 of them in morning along with 2 Turmeric caps and it seems that they are removing the uric acid from my urine, and I have been urinating at almost the same amount as when I was taking the fluid pills, my urine is much lighter, so I know its working, and the burning pain has subsided almost all. I also read if you have insomnia, the tart cherry helps sleep disturbances. You must take Organic because of pesticides. I ordered from Amazon. Be sure to read the reviews from customers. It seems to help people with Fibromyalgia (which I also have) and arthritis plus other pain.

I forgot to mention that the swelling has not gone down, and if I don't take the lasix, it just
gets worse.I'm greatful that the burning nerve
pain has subsided, but I do wish there was
something to help with the swelling!
Have you ever had your vitamin D checked. I use to feel and was told I had fibromyalgia but after I took vitamin D I felt better.
Don't go off Levoxyl; I know there is another generic name for it; but after all these years on it, I'm use to that name.
Some years back, I ran out of 50mcg (once daily). After 4 days, I thought I was ready for the mental hospital! All things started to happen to my body and I called the Pharmacy and spoke with the Pharmacist. He was upset with me and told me to come there and he'd give me (I had to pay) 4 pills and in the meantime he or I had to call my Dr. and have him OK a 90 day supply. The thyroid is your body's furnace. It controls all of the body's main functions. Heart, lungs, brain, etc. You are asking for big trouble if you go cold turkey on this drug! I still have my thyroid, thank God. Some patients don't.
Re: Synthroid. It's a brand name and the FDA for years let it slide on the market without any evaluations backing it up! It finally had been evaluated after a program on 60 Minutes brought this to the attention of the public. It's more expensive and it too has side effects. You are not suppose to mix levoxyl w/ synthroid. Bad news. Stick with one or the other.
I reread all of the reviews and the two
of mine that have been on there are not anymore! Why are my posts missing. I had to add to them, and check on something I had written, but now is impossible! I would like an answer!
My swelling has now traveled to my both thighs, though my right leg is worse. I can hardy bend my knees and it's difficult sitting on the john. Has anyone been troubled with the same symptoms? My feet, ankles, calves and now thighs are painful and stinging. The front of my legs are dried out and I keep getting patches that look like dried salt; I wash it off and it returns right away!
I was told by my doctor to only take synthroid Never generic because true synthroid does not have the edema side effect. We will see. I'm staring synthroid tomorrow.
I also am experiencing leg swelling, overall mood has changed, stomach & bowel habits are different and a decrease in stamina. I even feel like I've had vision changes! 25mcg for years until 3 weeks ago changed to 50mcg - lab work today hoping I can reduce to 1 & 1/2 tabs of 25 mcg I also feel anxious at bed time - sure changes your life
You probably have Excema from the dried skin patches; nothing to do with thyroid or meds for it. see a dermatologist.
If 1 leg is shorter than the other, why doesn't your foot Dr. order a a build up of the heel (plastic or leather) at a shoe repair shop? He'd have to describe how much of a build up and what shoe; ain't cheap; but my poor Mom had hip pain for yrs. Finally found a foot dr. who measured her legs and sure enough I leg was shorter than the other! It was a great help to her; she had to wear leather shoes with leather bottoms and heels but - if it would stop the pain who cares about fashion?
I am on Thyroid meds for 3 weeks now its called Levothyroxine my legs swell up and my hands are more dry during the day by 8 pm i can feel my legs go down and they feel normal and I feel my stomach feels bigger then by morning its small as soon as i take that pill my body swells I am on 50 mls
I told my doctor that I stopped my 100mcg levoxyl on 3/23/2017, that was on 3/29. It's because the swelling keeps getting worse since 11/2016 when my legs started swelling when my levoxyl was changed from 88mcg to 100mcg. He is changing it back to 88 mcg with 1/2 tab of cytomel (T3) morning and evening. I now wonder if I would be better off taking Synthroid (where it has no edema effect with the T3?). I don't convert my T4 to T3 and never have in 30 years. I'm going to email him to ask before my levoxyl is delivered on Monday. If anyone has information regarding this, please let me know as soon as possible!
I don't agree I have had the same problem too many complaints for it to be a coincident
Hi all, I also struggled with all sorts of symptoms for the past 8 years. I will share some things that helped me get almost back to normal in hope to save everyone else the pain.
I had my thyroid removed and now I am on 150mcg levothyroxine. I had side effects like:
- anxiety & panic attacks
- easy to get tired
- trouble sleeping
- muscle cramps
- joint pain
- inflammation
- mood swings
- depression
Doctors were for the most part ignorant as long as the blood tests were fine. I did complete blood work (not only thyroid) and looked perfect but I was feeling like crap. I tried myself multiple things to improve my life quality and the things that worked are:
1. Try different brands of hormones, even though all have levothyroxine, the body reacts differently to each one. The best I found for me is Levothyrox [Image]. At first I was on Euthyrox and it was completely bad. This helped improve things by 20%
2. Split the dose during the day. I take 150 as 25 in the morning, 50 before lunch, 50 before dinner, 25 before sleep. Also at lunch I take it with a complex supplement of magnesium, calcium, D3, B6. This helped improve things by 20%
3. Exercise to burn all the extra adrenaline. Gym, sports & jogging work very well, yoga also helps, but better to have action exercises. This helped improve things by 20%
4. Eat properly. I gave up all animal protein a couple of months ago and that has been going very well so far. No refined sugar, less salt, no dairy, no junk/fried food, no alcohol is a must. Meat I choose to gave up for moral reasons but try to reduce at least. Plant-based food is what I eat (fruits, legumes, veggies, smoothies, juices, grains, seeds). There are plenty of resources online for plant-based cooking recipes. This helped improve things by 20%
5. Try to get good sleep. For me, the sleep quality decreased on this medication. Get a quiet, dark room, try some stretching before sleep. Use plant-based tea/drinks to help you get deep sleep. I also use an anti-inflammatory cream for some muscles that ache. This helped improve things by 20%
Good luck and I hope my experience is helpful.
Is there t3 and t4 in Armour ? My Dr has me on 5mg of t3 and 88mg of levoxyl which
is the T4. I will go back 6/22 after being on
this since March, and he'll be putting me on Armour if the results are no good. The swelling has gone down some in my legs, but as soon as I'm on my feet, the swelling goes up in my feet and ankles!
