Can taking Allopurinol cause a diabetic to develop kidney problems? ## My father had a quadruple by-pass and kidney failure, should he continue taking allopurinol along with these medications: coumadin, lipitor, lisinopil, metrplolol and pholso? ## Allopurinol has been known to cause kidney failure as a side effect, along with nausea, dizziness, headache, kidney insufficiency, and confusion, according to FDA reports. Ref: Medline Plus Allopurinol However, diabetes and many other medications can also cause kidney problems, so there is really no way to say for sure what has caused kidney issues.
