I just started taking Levothyroxine 2 wks ago my legs and feet are swollen so bad by nite I can barley walk. They go down a little at nite but swell back. I am taking 25mcg and I am afraid to continue taking this med. Has any one else had this problem?

Yep, and alot of other medications cause foot, ankle, calf swelling I have found out over the years. Blood pressure medicine, steroids ie prednisone, cortizone and the thyroid medications. In the beginning its not too bad but what it is doing in the long run is narrowing our blood vessels and thus the blood flow. Cuts off circulation worse with age. So its a catch 22 again that medications are bad for you too but what is worth? The medications or the diseases?

My latest tsh test showed I was too low. I was raised to one fifty mg from one twenty five mg. I am also anemic and.was told.to take iron.I'm not sure about taking iron but I feel weak.

I. also had a case of preorbital cellulitis and my face was swollen upnto my hair line and developed scabs and now I'm waiting for red marks to fade. Had to go to emergency rm and was given clindamycin and had a fever.

I had the same problem in the past to the pint that I couldn't walk, or lift my leg, or climb the stairs. It got so bad that I quit taking it all together. It got back to normal after a while.
A new doctor put me on meds again few days ago. And the same problem started to happen again.

Too low a dose can also cause swelling ass it cause a negative effect. Adrenals could also be affected causing swelling. Try taking a pinch of sea salt in water after taking Levothyroxine important thing stay hydrated and keeping electrolytes balanced. 25 mcg is a very low dose. 50 mcg is a. recommend. starting dose uping the dose to 75 mcg after 2 weeks. Staying on that dose for 8 weeks and retesting to see how dose. needs to be adjusted.

I have been treated for hypothyroid for 20 years. Been on 200 mcg for last 3 years. This last year I have been hurting and finally realized I have been swelling all over. Finally seen in hands arms and feet. Becoming stiff hurt to move but hurt to be in bed. I have just quit taking levothyroxin 3 days ago. I am feeling better. Not as swollen. Now what to do about thyroid. Cause now I am tried and cold. But better than swollen. Also my hands where got from swelling they crack 3rd and peeled. Really hurt. That is slowing healing.

Yes I have so bad that I would wake up crying in pain that my legs hurt. i told my doctor but he said that wasn't it but the day after I stopped the medicine the leg pain left after 400 days and not to mention my hands were swollen so much I could barely use them esp in the morning. It has been a nightmare !!

Since i last posted about my dr. changing my levoxyl from 88 mcg to 100mcg, no changes in swelling, even though I was taking 20mg of lasix twice a day. The swelling remained mostly the same. but then my foot doctor cut my toenails and when he cut the left foot, the toe next to the big toe made me cry out because he hurt me. Later on that day, I started getting a burning pain on that toe, so by late evening the whole pad under all the toes were so painful, It was difficult walking, because my right leg is 1 1/2 inch shorter than my left leg and Because its painful I limp from that, but when this happened to my left foot, I was limping on both legs. if I didn't have my walker, I wouldn't have been able to walk at all. about a week later, for some reason, the same thing began to happen to my right foot too! and both big toes and toes next to them. I googled it and decided I have gout! When I read up on It, It said it could be caused from taking diuretics. Also any trauma could start it up, which was the cutting nails! I ordered Sports Research (SR) Tart Cherry Caps and have been taking 2 of them in morning along with 2 Turmeric caps and it seems that they are removing the uric acid from my urine, and I have been urinating at almost the same amount as when I was taking the fluid pills, my urine is much lighter, so I know its working, and the burning pain has subsided almost all. I also read if you have insomnia, the tart cherry helps sleep disturbances. You must take Organic because of pesticides. I ordered from Amazon. Be sure to read the reviews from customers. It seems to help people with Fibromyalgia (which I also have) and arthritis plus other pain.

Hi all, I also struggled with all sorts of symptoms for the past 8 years. I will share some things that helped me get almost back to normal in hope to save everyone else the pain.

I had my thyroid removed and now I am on 150mcg levothyroxine. I had side effects like:
- anxiety & panic attacks
- easy to get tired
- trouble sleeping
- muscle cramps
- joint pain
- inflammation
- mood swings
- depression

Doctors were for the most part ignorant as long as the blood tests were fine. I did complete blood work (not only thyroid) and looked perfect but I was feeling like crap. I tried myself multiple things to improve my life quality and the things that worked are:

1. Try different brands of hormones, even though all have levothyroxine, the body reacts differently to each one. The best I found for me is Levothyrox [Image]. At first I was on Euthyrox and it was completely bad. This helped improve things by 20%

2. Split the dose during the day. I take 150 as 25 in the morning, 50 before lunch, 50 before dinner, 25 before sleep. Also at lunch I take it with a complex supplement of magnesium, calcium, D3, B6. This helped improve things by 20%

3. Exercise to burn all the extra adrenaline. Gym, sports & jogging work very well, yoga also helps, but better to have action exercises. This helped improve things by 20%

4. Eat properly. I gave up all animal protein a couple of months ago and that has been going very well so far. No refined sugar, less salt, no dairy, no junk/fried food, no alcohol is a must. Meat I choose to gave up for moral reasons but try to reduce at least. Plant-based food is what I eat (fruits, legumes, veggies, smoothies, juices, grains, seeds). There are plenty of resources online for plant-based cooking recipes. This helped improve things by 20%

5. Try to get good sleep. For me, the sleep quality decreased on this medication. Get a quiet, dark room, try some stretching before sleep. Use plant-based tea/drinks to help you get deep sleep. I also use an anti-inflammatory cream for some muscles that ache. This helped improve things by 20%

Good luck and I hope my experience is helpful.

I have been on Levothyroxin for a little over a month. The past week my feet and ankles feel like they are on fire and are swollen and hurt. I was wondering if it was from the levothyroxin.

I hurt my leg 6 days ago and it still hurts when I walk on it and it swells up after being on it too much, the leg injured is the same one I hurted at 15th. How I hurted it was by turn my body too fast that my knee half didn't turn in time .

l believe levothyroxine is poison to my system and have stopped it on a regular basis but I do not know what else to do and we need to know what the fillers are in the pill and was it made in foreign countries.
