Suboxone And Valium (Page 3) (Top voted first)

Updated

I have been on valium for approximately 12 years for severe anxiety and because of a severe back problems i was also put on percocet for years. Someone told me about suboxone. They said suboxone will help with the pain. So i went to a sub doc and told him i was on valium. He did not give me a U/A till months later. Doc said you are on a benzo. l said is that the valiums? He said yes. I said i told you i was on valium. He said you have to go off them. I was told if i go off my valiums i could have a seizure. I have been off the valium for a week. I am shaking and can't sleep. I feel sick. I was doing great with suboxone and valium. Now i am just sick. Please, someone help me.

Ok all this about suboxone is not true. It is actually commonly used to treat pain. True it was maybe created for a substitute for opiate addiction to replace methadone, but many pain doctors use it to treat pain. They even have a patch now called Butrans that contains bupernorphine and its only indication is for pain. So she is right about the suboxone being a pain management drug. The naltrexone in the suboxone only works if you try to administer it intravenously. It is a safety measure to ensure patients on it cannot abuse it. Bupernorphine is a partial agonist that suits pain patients well because they can keep upping the dose if need be with no ceiling for overdose like full agonists such as morphine. I used to be a pharmacist and wanted to clear up this confusion about the indications for suboxone.

Before I was just giving facts about suboxone usage for pain management but let me say it has been shown that taking benzos like value and opoates together do indeed cause respiratory depression and most doctors now will not prescribe them together. In fact my psychiatrist gave me a choice or whether I wanted to remain on my pain medications or be put on a benzo for panic but not both. And it is understandable why he and other doctors are saying this. They do not want to be responsible if something were to happen to you while on both. It was a good thing that you told him up front what medication you were on even if he didn't get it. But everyone's body is differentirely in how we tolerate or don't tolerate medications. I don't know what a pain clinic would do but I am pretty sure all suboxone docs will have the same point of view on taking both. So you can either take the advice of your suboxone doctor or go to pain management and see what they will say or do. It is all dose dependent and the doctors know what medications and doses are best for you in order to be safe. And there are other pain mangament options depending on your condition that may not require opiates or even partial opiates. It is more dangerous to withdrawl from the value than the suboxone. If you have been on the valium for a long time you could experience seizures if it suddenly isn't in your system. But if it is slowly moved down or done in a detox center it is better. A detox center could give you medication to stop any seizure acticity from happening. It really is a choice between which condition you want to treat in which way. There are always alternatives. My pain doctor thought about giving me the bupernorphine patch for my pain but decided not to because if I had breakthrough pain I couldn't take any other opiate to help. Actually if anyone has tried this patch I would be interested in knowing how it worked. But good luck and I hope whatever choice you make you feel better.

Yea gabapentine will help exspecially if someone's not use to taking them. It isint a narcotic Yet but gonna b in July . They r passing that law to make them a narcartic because they ARE highly addictive !! And people are abusing them also. They aren't an opioid thou jus are very VERY habit forming/addictive , therefore WILL b considered an narcotic any day now. They'll also b a drug hard to b able to even get perscribed unless having certain things with u. I'm jus sayn they are addictive to an easy to get addict to but are great fir things like that in most cases an fir nerve damage that I have

Jeez hunni I'm sorry! Yes suboxone will most definitely help with the pain! It is a narcotic and is used for pain as well. But what you are going threw is withdrawals from the benzos which the suboxone is not going to help one bit! Your doctor should of cut you down slowly so that did not happen! Sounds like he's a real jerk need to get new doc! That's horrible! And yes you can have seizures from just stopping benzos like that not to mention the other major withdrawal symptoms you will have. So so sorry ur going threw that! That really sucks! If I were u I would take a Valium if u still have any even a half of your normal dose then gradually cut yourself down. Or go to ER they can look it up and see u were on them and explain what's happening and you just need help getting off of them. But that doctor should of never done that to u! What a jerk! Everybody's different and things effect people differently but I actually prefer the subs for pain over oxycodone it works better for me anyways. Noticed someone saying it's not for pain and doesn't work that's just not true! Hope I was able to help good luck!

Google about it but don't go by what people say go by the other things it IS NOT any form of opioid at all it's naloxone and buborfine they make subutex and it has one of those ingredients in it and it's a lot different cus it doesn't have the blocker part in it which is an opioid blocker stops them from working an if taken with opioid in your system will cus you to go in withdraw cus it is a opioid BLOCKER .... I'm jus saying cause she really needs to hear the truth and she wants help

That's so not true, it is a benzodiazepine. All it takes is ONE and it will show in any U/A unless it's been 3 days since that's how long it takes to get out of your kidneys/urine.

Used to be a pharmacist? That would be a clear indication there is a reason why you still are not. Suboxone is absolutely not for chronic pain and it is not an opiate. You "should" know that having been in the pharmaceutical industry.

Re: Curious80 (# 38) Expand Referenced Message

Hello curious80, thanks for the info. It seems on here some get uneducated information or opinions and then viscously defend then till the end. I use Suboxone for chronic pain and addiction troubles. It does work (it contains naloxone). The bio-availability of that naloxone is 2% if taken correctly, but if it's broken down, abused, it turns to 80%. You actually can get a bad case of precipitated withdrawals. My ridiculous question is if a person is taking Suboxone, why would they be taking an opiate or benzo with it? Kinda counter-productive right? That's kinda like taking a laxative with an antidiarrhea medicine. But what do we know right lol. Thanks for the information and God bless.

Hello Joan, hope you're doing better. Just to clear things up, Suboxone is an opiate. It can and does have the ability to help with pain. I saw a few uneducated OPINIONS here. Fact; Suboxone can and does help with chronic pain; it can also be habit forming, when abused. Another fact: I'm prescribed Suboxone for chronic pain and for my trouble with addiction to opiates. Suboxone is not "just a blocker" but is very strong and overrides any other opiate. The naloxone in it has no effect unless it's abused (broken down and administered intravenously). It is an abuse deterrent. It's not a good idea to mix it with your Valium, in high doses it can stop your breathing. If you told your Dr then he didn't listen, actually he should have checked your pharmacy record before prescribing, even if it's just for pain, generally all Drs will or at least question you on what other meds you take and for the U/A he should have evaluated you at each visit. It is possible to safely take them together but only in low doses and under your primary care physician's supervision. Valium withdrawals are really tough and can last for weeks especially if you've been on them a long time you should never just cold turkey any medicine without first checking with your Dr. I hope you find a comfortable middle ground in this. Chronic pain and anxiety are tough alone but together they are horrible. I wish you luck. Be safe. Hope this helped a little.

Being honest with your Dr is how you get quality healthcare. Not sure about what kinda people we are. I had trouble for actually obtaining pain relief, as a large number does. Addiction started with legitimately prescribed medication that slowly seamlessly transitions into full blown addiction. I now take Suboxone for chronic pain and my issue with opiate dependency. We are all just people, no matter how we got to the place we are now. Unfortunately, street drugs have never actually came back or went away, they're here, always have been and always will be. What leads legitimate pain patients to these "street drugs" is the constant wishy washy regulations on opiates that leave us high and dry when we build a tolerance and get dubbed drug seekers. Then the selling or "diversion" comes from the financial hardships those who suffer chronic have. We are not treated, we are pacified with painkillers, then labeled junkies when we loose control. It's a viscous cycle with no relief for those who suffer. I've lived the last 25 years of my life with unbearable pain, multiple surgeries, total and partial joint replacements. I've taken ungodly amounts of opiates and actually overdosed a few times, all the while still suffering from the pain. It would never go away. Now I take two 8/2 milligram Suboxone every morning, no withdrawal, my pain is not absent but is controlled and by all means bearable. I had to accept that I'll never be totally pain-free and I cannot successfully treat my pain with opiates. God bless and good luck.

Valium is harder to come off of than suboxone. You should've been tapered down on the valiun as long as you have been taking them.

Hi. I have a couple of questions about Suboxone because I'm on it for Chronic Pain & it's working well. Here are a couple of things you said --

"Suboxone can and does help with chronic pain; it can also be habit forming, when abused."

Even when NOT abused & taken as prescribed, your body WILL become DEPENDANT on it -- I'm not sure why you said habit forming...Did you mean, if you're on it for addiction, it can become addictive, if abused?? I realize it's different wording, but DEPENDANCE & HABIT-FORMING are different & your average Joe may not understand that!! Also --

"Naloxone is not "just a blocker" but is very strong and overrides any other opiate. The naloxone in it has NO effect unless it's abused (broken down and administered intravenously"

I've always been confused by the Naloxone in Suboxone & wondered how it works so well for Chronic Pain when it's got the blocker in it?? Are you saying that it does NOTHING in the body when taken as prescribed?? And ONLY becomes "active" IF too much is taken OR taken wrong?? Thanks ahead of time for answering my questions!

I am on xanax & hydrocodone. My pain management Dr. said I have to give up one or the other. It's so stupid, because I don't take them at the same time anyway. My primary Dr. gave me a drug called buspirone 5mg, to help me get off the xanax. Of course I hated that, but it really helped, to my surprise! Maybe it can help you get off the valium. Good luck.

I don't understand why they haven't tapered you slowly down instead of forcing you to withdraw You are correct about triggering seizures if abruptly stopping your regular doses.I went off Ativan and on Valium about 5 years ago to counteract black mold symptoms that wreaked havoc on my nervous system I never took more than 6 mg a day and now use 1/2 mg at night for sleep, but tapered myself at my own pace I recently signed on with a pain management doctor who put me on subaxone for chronic pain and I use 1-2.5mg daily strip He was not concerned with me using the valium at the dosage my body has used all these years. In my case, He trusted me and knows I am knowledgeable about drugs, addiction and interactions Even with me being in my late 60's the benefit outweighs the risks
I've tried stopping the valium as well, but the tremors and stiffness return to the point that my body seizes up and I can't function normally. I think you may want to search fit for a more proactive doctor and see if they will work with you instead of projecting their own protocols onto you .I have been where you are and it's torture
Best of luck to you

Re: Kat (# 1) Expand Referenced Message

Not true
I am a chronic pain patient in Pain Management and use subaxone for spinal and nerve pain. I've been on opiods of all kinds and this is so much better for me and I also use a low dose of valium to offset tremors and muscle spasms from black mold contamination which caused neuromuscular damage Its been a godsend.
