Side Effects Of Bactrim (Page 15)

I need to know of any side effects that may occur while taking this medication.
Sweetie I wouldn't take it! Man I wish I could post a picture of what it did to me!
I was prescribed Bactrim on Wednesday. Took 1 pill and almost immediately my eyes were so bloodshot I could hardly see, had a sore throat like nothing I have ever had, fever of 101.6 and severe pain in my elbows and knees. Immediately stopped taking it. Went to my doctor and he tried to tell me it wasn't a reaction to the Bactrim, tested me for strep, asked if I could have Lyme disease (NO!) and said if it was a reaction it was very odd (then why are so many people posting horror stories
Online!?!?!?! It is 48 hours later and I am still having severe pain in my elbows and knees. I really hope
This passes soon. I spent today in bed because the pain is so bad when I stand. I'm 45...I really hope this goes away soon. I wouldn't wish this on anyone.
So finally I'm writing an update. In an effort to stop the sun rash from happening I went to an ER doctor, a CNP (who is naturally minded), a dermatologist who then had me come in to a meeting of top University dermatologists to see if any of them could figure out what was going on (I'd guess 15-20 at minimum, none of them had any ideas other than a "slight chance that it could be Lupus" and "something in the Bactrim must have reacted to something I was using on my skin") and finally a Dr. of oriental medicine. The only one that was helpful was the Oriental medicine doctor. She did a live blood analysis. It reveled an autoimmune response and some digestive issues that cause inflammation in my gut. I took a autoimmune supplement called digestacure autoimmune-x, and changed several things in my diet. (BTW autoimmune disease is common in my family not to mention at epidemic proportions in America) During this time I discovered that there are several autoimmune diseases that are drug induced.
I did the strict diet and supplement and kept completely out of the sun (covered my body head to toe even when I walked from the car into the grocery store) for one month. When I returned we did another live blood and it was MUCH better! Truthfully it was amazing & I was not expecting it to be so drastically different. After that I did brief evaluations out in the sun (5 min at first then working up to larger increments with several days in between to see if there was any change in my skin) with Badger sunblock (due to it's limited list of ingredients). I am SO SO SO HAPPY TO REPORT that my skin is no longer reacting to the sun! I have even been out in the sun long enough to get a slight burn and there was still no reaction! I also found out through the dermatologist that Neosporin has sulfa in it so you should not use that any more. Personally I will now use a colloidal silver first aid topical treatment or essential oils (please educate yourself before using ANYTHING on or in your body!) As many of you already on here I will NEVER let any doctor give myself or my loved one a sulfa drug. I believe they do more harm than good in the majority of people who take them. If you'd like more details I'd be happy to share. But I would hands down recommend anyone going through this to see a Dr. of oriental medicine and do the live blood analysis.
My mother is 83, took Bactrim for 6 days and started itching all over from the inside. She has polymyalgia and started hallucinating. Spent 11 nights in the hospital. Docs said her blood sodium level dropped and this caused the hallucinations. She has spent 3 weeks in physical therapy because she was so weakened. She still has burning / stinging sensations in her lower body. Doc thinks it is nerve damage. Pharm did not give her drug fact sheet to read (apparently trying to save paper). Talk to doctor about meds before using. This could save a lot of misery.
Couple weeks ago I started this med for a uti and got huge painful itchy red spots. Thought it was valley fever. Spots went away and took the meds. Today I started again for another uti and within 5 min I was itchy and the spots came back in the exact same places. It's more like again rash. Hurts oh so bad!
I have been on Bactrim 2x1000 mg daily for the last three weeks and I think I am beginning to really feel side effects. I have MRSA and it is helping clear it up but I woke up in the middle of the night, sweating, chest pain, dizzy, neck pain, headache - and found this site where so many other people have had bad reactions. I will call my Dr in the morning to see if I can stop the drug or change it. I am allergic to most other antibiotics. I don't think this is an allergic reaction - no hives - but the side effects stink.
Personally, mine began with red, glassy eyes. They felt HOT. Then my muscles began to hurt. The muscle pain was in groUps-thighs, then arms, calves etc. My entire body felt as if it were breaking in two. Then back pain began. Fever of almost 104 (taking meds did reduce it but it did not go away). Body felt rigid. Stiff, as if I couldn't move it. While this began, my chest was feeling tight, throat began to hurt and mouth and tongue began to swell. In no time my face was swollen. Now I would advise anyone to go straight to the ER once breathing is Impaired or labored. I however, have a cousin and his wife who are both RN's and a friend who is. I text them. I was NOT able to breathe if I spoke. Took 2 Benadryls. After 30 -45 minutes took 2 more. Then I began to feel nauseated And have diarrhea. I only vomited once but still... I just couldn't get comfortable. Felt like the flu except worse. Later on, my mouth became raw and is now full of canker sores inside it, on my tongue and going down my throat. Also there is a sickening headache that can be a side effect Of course I got that too! that one pill zapped all of the life out of me. I could barely walk for almost 2 days Due to weakness and dizziness. I took that ONE dose on a Tuesday afternoon. It is now Saturday afternoon and I still ache in my legs and arms, still have cankers on my tongue and throat. The inside of my mouth is still raw but now I can live with this. Oh and you may be sensitive to the sun. I sure am now. My skin is still flushed and eyes still glassy. I did find that coconut oil (organic and not processed) swished in my mouth has helped to heal the inside of my mouth. I just dig a spoonful out, and let it melt and swallow it (due to the throat probs) I hope this will help you or someone else. Oh and if anyone feels this coming on my cousins said take the benadryl asap and take a prilosec or Zantac with it as well.
Please let us know how things go.
Per a Pharmacist friend: "10 days is typical but in rare cases it can persist for months, even years."
Obviously with minimal research WE now know that this is not rare for it to last months. I'm 68 days out from my last dose (only took 4 doses total). I'm still very reactive to the sun swelling & rash come in various locations.
Auto-immune response is now suspected & I'm pursuing non-western medicine to hopefully prevent an auto-immune disease.
How long before your side effects went away? Just curious because I also took one dose and am having almost every severe side effect and its been 48 hours.
I'm still having issues. Not as extreme but it's still there. I'm not confident that it'll ever be normal. My arms still have a red tint where it was real bad.
I started taking Bactrim thit's day night. Ever since I started it Ive had diarrhea.
Curious if anyone is finally NOT having symptoms after months off all medication?
I'm 1&1/2 months out and am still reacting to the sun. Melissa? Have you stopped reacting to the sun yet?
I was taking Bactrim to prevent me from getting an infection since I was on a long term high dose of prednisone. Apparently the prednisone suppressed the reaction as long as the dose was the same. My symptoms appeared when I started tapering from the prednisone. I had always dealt with a very bloated stomach and gas pains the entire time I was on Bactrim. After the prednisone was tapered down to a lower dose, I broke out in a very itchy rash and hives all over. Any other cause was dismissed by the dermatologist. My hands also became very swollen and painful to even pick up a cup. My prednisone had to go back up. That only slightly helped, as I can drive but not without pain. None of the prescription itch medications including Benadryl helps with the itchy rash and now I have these sores and the itching is driving me up the wall. I was told it can take two months to go away. :((
I was on bactrim for a sinus infection. 10 days 2 pills a day. I've been having vertigo attacks and broke out in hives 5 days later. Went to doctor and was told never to take bactrim again and that I was alergic. On the 10th day of being off medicine I have horrible head aches, nausea, shaking, pins and needles feelings in hand and feet. Weak in limbs , thumping hart , nervousness ,eye site problems. Not feeling good. Going back to doctor. Hope that they can give me some kinda relief. I've never been this Ill in my life and is angry with the clinic that put me on it. DON'T EVER TAKE THIS DRUG. I feel like its going to kill me.
I took one dose and had the exact same reaction--severe headache, neck pain/tightness, painful to take a breath, sharp pain right knee. Took advil and Benadryl and it went away.
I have taken Bactrim DS in the past for UTI without problems . However, a few months back it was prescribed for a sinus problem I think and I took one pill and I had some weird reaction so I did not take anymore. It seemed as if the pills were more potent. So here it s now and I just started taking few days ago for this bronchitis respiratory thing that has hit our area. I had the nasal swab done so it did show a specific pathogen. I am in the US. I noticed my ears got red afterward I started on it friday but only took the one pill. I took two on Saturday and Sunday 12 hours apart and one this morning. My cough became worse while taking this . I noticed a few pimple looking things popped up. I am NOT taking anymore. I also started running a fever where I had not been days prior. I am drinking plenty of water. I also made sure I was taking a probiotic. I cannot see taking this up to the tenth day.I also noticed some discomfort in my neck. I am hoping that by only taking it a few days I can drink water to flush it out. I think each bactrim pill takes about 72 hours to leave the body. I am assuming that by next Monday it should be gone out if my system. I really think certain manufacturers put more in pills than others.I heard that Bactrim DS has a half life so it is not excreted right away as it stays in tissues. I also read that it can lower platelets and wbg's and cause bleeding so be careful if you have to take it. It can also cause meningitis. I know crazy right? I am ending this by not taking anymore today. I already called my doctor and told them as Urgent Care had prescribed this. I will just do homeopathic stuff and continue probiotics and water to get it out. Please contact your doctor about continuing or discontinuing any medications at any time. Thank you
I was prescribed bactrim for a staph infection. Was fine till the 8 th. day of a 2x/day for 10 day dose. I have to walk everywhere if I need to go somewhere and I've always lived in cold climates and all of a sudden on the 8 th day of taking bactrim ,I went outside in the cold and after 30 mins. Im broke out in hives on my legs, buttocks, hands, face and neck. It has been a week now and everytime I go outside in the cold I breakout in hives. They go away when I warm up. Does anyone have this happen also?

I had a similar reaction 2x with severe hives and itchy burning skin. I felt like I was on fire! I had hives for close to 4 days all over my body except my face. The spots remained for about 2 weeks. The first time, I did not think the medication caused it. The second time, without a doubt and it scared me. Benadryl alleviated my symptoms and other antibiotics that were prescribed.
A month later, I feel that bactrim is still in my system. I get itchy, my eyes get irritated, and my throat tight or sore. I am going to the doctor in a couple weeks to see what exactly is causing this. My fear is Stevens Johnson syndrome as this young lady is suffering from.
Stay away from bactrim!
I was given Bactrim for HS. 2x800 per day. I was fine for 2 weeks and on the 15th day developed a headache. Kept taking Neorofen and thought it was odd. 5 days later the headache was persistent and I was getting g so. E fairly severe chills. I don't often get sick so didn't even realise that meant I had a fever and just kept going.
Eventually worked out it was a side effect.
Waited two months was told to start the course again... Within 4 hrs I was back to fever, headache, lethargy, dizziness sore.. Restless...
