For me it was vaginal irritation and severe burning, had to stop taking it.

I cant take cipro...bacrtrim...itchy hives. ...Zzz UTI...water. and cranberry pills.dony know what to do?

Hi again. To recap : I was on Bactrim and keflex. After final dose of Bactrim 7 days I broke out into hives at 4Am sunday, took Benadryl was ok. All of sunday continued keflex still had some spots recurring. By evening large hive patches. Went to er and they gave me 60mg prednisone. Monday morning woke up ok. However spots progressively returned so now I stopped keflex. Continuing Benadryl and prednisone. Today, monday, as hives returned more and more. Have patches everywhere. Arms legs back stomach buttocks face neck. Dr put me on clindamycin antibiotics now. Wish me luck.

If it gets worse or comes back go to doc. I had hives for a day then it escalated to my arms and face turning red and swelling with fever. Ended up on steroids for a month.

I'll try to frequently update my symptoms. Hopefully they don't last long and these messages help the next victim. The benadryl I took at 4am helped. Woke up w/o hives. However some spots are still coming and going. Odd. I feel like I'm getting sick. A little groggy.

This medication is poison!!! I urge anyone who takes this medication and has a reaction to go back to your doctor and make him or her aware. Physicians need to be aware that this drug has SERIOUS side effects! Nobody ever said "oh we' re so sorry" after I ended up in the hospital with meningitis from Bactrim. Nobody said that this drug has many side effects. And even as a nurse I had no idea. No clue. Please f/u and get tx if you have any side effects. Thanks.

Omg. Thank you everyone for sharing. I too am a bacterium poison victim.. I'm up at 4am posting this as I awakened itching from hives. I took my last dose around 10:30 pm last night, and this is my first reaction. I just took Benadryl. I really am trying to avoid a trip to er at 4am Sunday.

My 8 year old Daughter was prescribed Bactrim for Cellulitis in her lower left leg. She was on it 10 Days and THIRSTY, THIRSTY the entire time. The very last day of the Medicine after her Morning dose of 1 and 1/2 pills twice daily she broke out into Hives all over her legs, Feet, arms. Doctor said to not take her last dose and that her rash will go away. It is 2 days after the rash appeared and it gets worse each day. Horrible Antibiotic and i am sure it will soon be on a Television Commercial that if you have taken this Medicine and have had all this issue to call the number to sue the company. AND I WILL BE RIGHT THERE!!! IF THIS RASH GETS ANY WORSE I AM CONTACTING A LAWYER IN THE MORNING. My child is not going to suffer the consequences of some A hole company putting out un safe drugs. SO DISGRUNTLED.

I have been off the med for a few months and still have issues with my skin. Any time I'm in the sun, my arms and face flare up. Get red and feel super hot. I'm starting to wonder if it'll ever go back to normal.

Doctor prescribed me Bactrim 4 weeks ago (Sept 3 to be exact) for UTI. I took until I started having side effects like elevated heart rate (almost like it was going to explode), feeling "out of it", anxiety about the 6th day in (Sept 9). Called the doctor and told me to continue which gut feeling told me to stop. Took it anyways and had the same symptoms the next day (Sept 10) and called again in which the Doctor told me to stop. The very next day around midnight (Sept 11), I had tiny bumps all over my upper body and arms. Started benadryl and took it every six hours (I had only two rounds of it). Next day (Sept 12), it went to hell as I was numb all over and chest tightness with short breaths, went to ER and giving prednisone and pepcid to eliminate the reaction which in few hours it was gone. Close call and very scary. I was giving antihistamines as well as prednisone for 5 days. After that, everything subsided. Now today (Oct 3) I feel somewhat better but still get mild bouts of feeling "out of it" or itching here and there or sometimes mild chest tightness.

Question to all those out there, how long does this take to be practically completely out of your system? I hear anywhere from 4-6 weeks or even several months, is that true? There's no way that this drug can remain in your system for a long time, can it? I am thinking I will be ok but it will take some time for my body to recover/rebuild and be ok again. Drinking plenty of fluids and exercise seems to help a lot. Does anyone recommend any supplements or a cleanse or anything? I would appreciate any feedback or replies, thank you!

@Jessica: Has this been going on during the month or did it start after a month? I am curious because I get spells of itching but not all the time and it is very mild so I really do not need to take benadryl. Mine started roughly about a day ago.

I have been off the medication for over a month. I still get a horrible patchy rash on my arms and legs. It itches so bad and it is aggravated by Sun and heat. I would think it would've gotten better by now but it's not. I take benadryl but nothing arms to help especially at night my legs itch so bad I can't sleep!

I was put on this drug for a duration of 10 days, 2 times a day for a UTI. The first three days I had the most debilitating headache I've ever experienced; I didn't connect this with a side effect, I only assumed it was due to cutting out the caffeine for the sake of my bladder. However, on the 9th day, I woke up with my lips swollen to gigantic proportions. On the 10th day, I woke up with the most itchy rash that looks like hives from my neck to my ankles. Hoping this Benadryl takes care of it.

I started taking Bactrim a week ago for prostatitus. They can only guess if it is a bacterial infection or just inflammation, but the antibiotics are in case it is bacterial and may get worse. I felt good for 4 days, but on the 5th day I had fever, aches, and chills. I assumed that I had a virus and was a bit relieved that I was taking antibiotics in case my fever was due to a bacterial infection. On the 6th day with bactrim, I started getting very itchy and soon had a rash over almost all of my body. Didn't take another dose after that. But then the rash and itchiness got worse. The rash started off just red and irritated and then progressed to a thousand little red specks. It is all more itchy than I can imagine. Started taking benadryl but went to my primary care physician and they gave me steroids. Just took my first dose so I hope I feel better soon.

Yes!!!!! And Bactrim has a long half life. It will be in your system awhile. Go see a doctor to be on the safe side.

I just took one pill of bactrim and started having muscle pain all over and barely able to walk. Fever also. Im just not taking any more of that pill. But this joint pain is killing me! Thinking if i should go to ER.

I hope you have gotten help by now. Just saw this. I recently was tx with Bactrim for MRSA. Never taken before. I am a nurse. Never connected my symptoms to the Bactrim. High fever, chills, nausea and vomiting. Decrease appetite, severe headache, lethargy, and stiff neck. Then the rash came.
Turns out I had viral meningitis due to the Bactrim. It sounds like your symptoms were very similar. If anyone starts to get severe headache, stiff neck, fevers after taking Bactrim... Go to ED immediately!!!!! This is a dangerous drug ??

I was put on Bactrim for a month 80o mg twice a day for a sinus infection. I have never had an allergic reaction to any medication, but on the 17th day of the Bactrim, I broke out neck to ankle in a rash. The itching is unbearable. I went to the doctor today, and all it took was one look from him and he said, "Sulfa allergy. Stop taking the Bactrim." He gave me a Prednisone shot and a six day course of oral Prednisone. I'm taking Benadryl, 1 every four hours, and using Aveno hydrocortisone cream (expensive) to deal with the rash. I also had some heart palpitations and trouble getting a breath. Since there are other antibiotics that could be prescribed for a bacterial infection, I think docs should avoid Bactrim unless it is a last resort. Of course, if you don't know you are allergic to it, the doc can't know either, but better to be safe and prescribe something other than Bactrim.

I have also had same symptoms, aching, chills, fever, nausea started day 6 on bactrim and continued but doc did not pick up on it being an allergic reaction until day 9 of a prescribed 10day course. I am a 34yo RN and just had no clue a fever could be a sign of a severe rxn to Bactrim. My doc dc'd the Bactrim on Wednesday when I broke out in a full body rash with areas on my arms looking sun burned. I still feel horrible and wondering if you have any tips to speed up recovery? She ended up switching my antibiotic to Keflex today based on my abscesses culture results so hoping I tolerate the Keflex, been a long time since I have had to take Keflex.

I had the same symptoms just not the headache. I went to my family doctor and noticed I've lost 8 pounds in a week from lack of appetite. I haven't slept good. These are supposedly common side effects caused by the Bactrim. I was told to quit taking them.
