Is anyone else experiencing weight gain from seroquel? I still work out the same as always, and eat the same way, but I have gained over 20 pounds since i started seroquel 2 months ago. I dont want to stop taking it becasue i finally found a drug that helps, but this is an unacceptable side effect to me, anyone have any tips for dealing with this?
Antidepressants may or not be the reason. Weight gain is possible due to ANY criteria. Women gain when men don't. My opinion is only via my personal experience with these types of Rx's. Sorry.
I was started on 150 mg of seroquel in 2010. After six months, I was bumped up to 300 mgs. I gained a whopping 40 lbs in 8 months! I followed a low carb diet, as recommended by my doc, and lost a measly 5 lbs in 4 months with vigorous exercise 4-5 times a week. I then decided (on my own, against the recommendation of my doc to start taking half the dose (150mg). After a month on the lower dose, I had dropped 15 lbs (and was feeling fine despite the lower dose) but have since plateaued with the weight loss. It's so frustrating. Wish I could completely get off it, but it truly has been a miracle drug for me. =\ NOTHING else has worked as well for my bipolar and insomnia as seroquel. Before seroquel, I was on 7 meds for my bipolar and sleep...and was STILL miserable. Now, I only have to take the seroquel. Guess I'll just be chubby =\ lol
I've been on seroquel xr since 2010 and I've easily gained 60 pounds. I've recently asked my doctor to change my meds, but she won't because it works for my mental illness. I've been told that I need to go on a low carb diet and exercise. I've asked the nutritionalist if that's really going to help since seroquel xr is the reason I'm gaining weight. No one can answer that question. I've read all the comments here and it sounds like it increases a lot of people's appetites. I have to say it doesn't do that for me. I don't overeat and I'm committed to eating healthy now. I just feel bad because I'm obese and am pre diabetic. My friends and family get mad at me because they think I'm not taking care of myself. It's frustrating. Anyway, that's my vent.
So are you taking a water pill to help with the fluid retention? Has it helped?
Hi, I just read your post and I was wondering if you are losing weight now that you are off seroquel? I have gained 17 pounds in 2 months while taking 200mg every night. I eat healthy, jog and do Pilates regularly, but the weight gain is unstoppable. It is making me more depressed at this point.
I recently moved and had a hard time finding a therapist in our area, the central Oregon coast. Was off meds for 9 months (not my choice) and had severe weight loss as my bipolar went postal ....finally found a Dr & was put on JUST 25mg Seroquel instead of 100mg, at night which knocked me out. In just a week, my weight has gone up 3 lbs but I'm thrilled. For those of us who have a rapid weight loss that is life threatening (I'm 5'7" & under 120lbs but gaining), this drug can be a life saver. I'm also ADHD, so in conjunction with going back on Adderall, I'm not concerned about a huge gain as I am rarely ravenous and have gone primarily vegetarian & keep carbs & sugar out of the house. The most I ever gained on Seroquel was 15lbs which is why I changed my household food items. I'm allergic to Lamotrigine or any antisiezure med for bipolar , so I knew with the antipsychotics I had to be 'pro active' about the weight gain.
I was always a twig, my high school size, I am a guy, I gained 60 horrible pounds taking seroquel, running working out like crazy not losing a bit, I am going off it immediately.
It's been such a relief for me to find these forums about Seroquel - I felt so alone in dealing with all the side effects!
I was put straight onto 150mg which the psychiatrist warned me may make me put on weight, but assured me that it would only happen if I didn't watch my eating. I don't think this has been the case as I've read many forums that say it makes you put on weight no matter what you eat due to the histamine blocker effect.
Either way I was nervous as I've suffered from bulimia most of my 28 years. I found that I gained about 15lbs over my 3 years on this dose, in part due to bingeing once the hunger sets in and then being too tired to vomit...
But it's been a lot worse since I dropped. I've been coming off it for about 5 months, dropping 25mg a go, and I recently stabilised at 50mg for a while. The weight has PILED on. I've read that different doses can affect weight gain differently so I'm hoping that now I'm almost off I'll lose the weight again (on 25 currently but seeing the GP about cutting entirely this week).
Has anyone else experienced weight gain on a lower dose? I'm eating really carefully for the first time ever so I really think it must be the meds. So angry that I was ever put on these in thr first place... don't even get me started on the insomnia
K.
Hi, i've also gained 20 pounds over a 2 month period on a high dose of Seroquel to treat my bipolar II disorder.
I waa simply ALWAYS hungry jno matter how much I ate.
My psychiatrist put me on a diabetes med to help regulate my blood sugar but, although she had success with other patients, it didn't work for me.
It is now over 2 years since I've stopped the Seroquel but still haven't bee able to lose the weight althought I eat healthy and work out regularly. My GP now says I have metabolic syndrome.
I am taking seroquel 300 mg at bedtime. When I first started taking I gain 20 lbs but that was like 9 months ago but just on eating healthily I lost all the weight I gain plus some. I still on it because it work very good.
OMG! I know exactly what you mean...I gained so much weight, probably 25 lbs., in 2-3 months, it was horrible. Nothing fits, I can hardly stand to look in the mirror...but I got off of this med in February...I refuse to take it ever again...The weight gain happened without a diet change or anything...I have been dieting like crazy, eating only steamed veggies, fruit and some baked chicken now and again...walking 2-4 miles a day, doing yoga and on days I don't do yoga I do my own floor stretch for 30 minutes...being a former Dance Educator, I know what works....I highly recommend that you implore upon your Dr. to find something else that will work for you.
Yes, eating at night and I'm not able to control it! The seroquel i take makes my appetite ravenous! And if I fight to not eat before I fall asleep, then I just end up eating through out the night while I'm practically asleep. Ridiculous!
have been taking 100 mg of Seroquel for 4 months now. And I've gained about 25 lbs! But its got to be because it gives me a ravenous appetite and I take it at night and then uncontrollably gorge on carbs!! I flushed them down the toilet today. I'd rather stay awake all night until I can naturally sleep again then turn into a huge cow!
Seroquel pm and cymbalta am. recently prescribed topamax 50 mg at bedtime. been on seroquel one yr. Gained 60 lbs.topamax suppose to help me lose. I eat at night and dont even realize it. can anyone relate.
I went from size 00 to size 16 from this med i have decided to change eating I haven't eaten at night in 2 months bc I take the pill at night and I wake up starving but I try to ignore it now and I am walking daily and given up soda so far in 2 months lost 30 pounds it can be done I have so much more to go but I'm determined
I don't have the option to lower my dose we have tried but my biggest weight gain was eating habits I am starving on the meds but I been fighting the feelings, walking and giving up soda and I have lost 30 lbs in 2 months
Before starting seroquel xr 400 mgI was a 00 I didn't diet exercise eat healthy nothing and still stayed small. Within the first year of being on seroquel I gained and went to a size 16. I hate all the weight I gained especially knowing I didn't have to do anything to stay small before. But I also know without this medication I would be unstable. But I'm finally fed up with the weight for the last 6 years that I am changing my eating habits in the last 2 months I don't eat at night I'm walking daily and Ive recently given up soda and with all this I have lost 30 pounds so far. My doctor warned me about the weight gain when I started but I need this med so yes weight gain will continue at least for me it did but I'm finding out that it's also possible to lose weight while taking the medication too just try something different and find what works for u like I did.
I have gained weight while on Seroquel. After I take it I feel like I'm starving. I lowered my dose and went on a diet.
I also gained alot of weight on it. 85 pounds in 4 months for me i was on 400 mlgs now i take only 50 mlgs because its very hard to get off of plus my psychiatrist Put me on Topamax and I've lost 70 pounds in 4 months. Plus it still helps. you have any helpful hints on how I could possibly lose more weightbecause I'm still in the hundred 70's
