Updated

Is anyone else experiencing weight gain from seroquel? I still work out the same as always, and eat the same way, but I have gained over 20 pounds since i started seroquel 2 months ago. I dont want to stop taking it becasue i finally found a drug that helps, but this is an unacceptable side effect to me, anyone have any tips for dealing with this?

I have gained about 49lbs after taking seroquel.. I take 800mg at night time and it makes me so tired when I wake up in the morning, when I get 8 hours of sleep. Before I took the medication, I was find with even 6hours of sleep. I go to college and it's extremely hard to focus especially in the morning lectures since it's hard to keep my eyes open. I would feel so drowsy. On the weekends, I would wake up and eat a whole bunch of food and go back to sleep gain. The medication has given me a big appetite and it has changed my metabolism. I am 5'8'' and I used to be skinny, like 116lbs. I would eat a lot but I would gain much weight but after taking seroquel, I have steadly been gaining weight - about 10lbs at least each month. The medication is general makes you eat a lot and sleep alot meaning a lot of calorie intake and no exercise. I also take 200mg of lamictal in the morning and that makes me sleepy too but i don't know whether that actually affects your appetite. I just wanna quit taking seroquel cold turkey but I don't wanna relapse on being bipolar... I just hate being this fat, I've never been so big in my whole life and all of my clothes, I had to throw them away because it wouldn't fit. My jeans wouldn't even go up my calves, it's just plain horrible.

Weight Gain on Seroquel

I have severe Type I Bipolar Disorder to the point that I am 31 years old and on Disability. I take a combo of Lexapro, Klonopin, Lamictal and Seroquel. My meds at night consist of Klonopin, Lamictal and Seroquel. I had been taking the Klonopin first then waiting until I was just going to sleep to take the other 2 meds. Just recently, I started taking them all at the same time at night because my sleep is still so horrible. I cannot believe how ravenous I am after the Seroquel kicks in. I am an athlete so I am in excellent shape, BUT I won't be if I continue this med regime. It defitintely helps me fall asleep, but the hunger I feel is uncontrollable. I also get RLS from the meds so that's why I was taking them right before I fell asleep. Looks like I'm going to have to go back to irregular sleep patterns because weight gain is not an option for me. Needless to say, this sucks. I need adequate rest, but do not want to suffer the depression of gaining a ton of weight. Ugh. I know those of you with this disorder understand my dilemna. I cannot control myself after the Seroquel takes effect which is something new to me. All I want to eat is sugar and crappy food. Even though I try to refrain and eat an apple, string cheese and a glass of milk, that isn't enough.

I was just prescribed this by my psychiatrist so I can't comment on weight gain I've experienced. But he did have me promise that I will reduce my calories and really exercise. Even I want to maintain my current weight I have to cut calories. I am very nervous and hope I will not gain weight. Iam taking Chrome (have for months) as an appetite suppressant and it seems to help.

I've been on Seroquel for about a year and a half, and during that time I've gone from a size 4 to a size 12. I've had a thorough sleep study, and apparently it's because of an odd sleeping/eating disorder called SRED (Sleep-Related Eating Disorder). Essentially, I sleep-walk out to the kitchen and binge eat. I wake with no memory of it until I find the mess in the kitchen.
This is a pretty uncommon disorder, but I've been surprised by how many times it's come up in context of Seroquel. For those of you who've put on a lot of weight for no apparent reason, it's something worth thinking about.

I took Seroquel for almost 3 years, and I gained over 70 lbs. I have ALWAYS been fit and healthy, and despite maintaining a healthy diet I gained that weight, became borderline diabetic, and dependent on the medication. The drug does cause dependence, and there is a very pronounced and unpleasant withdrawal syndrome to go through if you discontinue the medication. It did help me sleep, but the benefits did not outweigh the liabilities and I discontinued the medication. I kept the same diet and exercise regiment and I have lost 35 pounds. Hope this helps.

I have been on serequel for the last 5 years. I too experienced weight gain, as one of the side effects is an almost incessant desire to binge eat. One tip that has worked for me...I just bump my meals back. For example: If I eat at bedtime (after serequel of course) I consider this supper.
The following day, I'm not usually hungry until 2-3 o'clock. I will eat something small. This is breakfast.
Between 5-6 I will eat "lunch"
Then "supper" at bed time.
This has been a good way to incorporate my "Serequel Meal" without the extra calories.

I am a 14 year old and have been prescribed to 25 MG of Seroquel. I want to know if this will make me gain weight? I am terrified at all these comments, but found that they are high doses. So in hopes that someone please answer if I will gain weight on 25 MG of Seroquel?

Does anyone know of a drug which is AS effective as Seroquel XR but does not cause weight gain? I have been on Seroquel XR (150mg) for 6 months, gained 8kgs and now cannot seem to lose any of it. I find I have an unstoppable appetite as soon as I take the medication. Please let me know.

I HAVE GREAT NEWS FOR YOU! I've been on Seroquel for 6 years now, and I kind of tryed all! The medicine made me gain something about 10kg. I stopped taking it and lost 8kg. I had to come back to seroquel and gain 10kg again. I switched to Risperidone, in hope that I would loose some weight but I put up 6kg more. So I switched to Geodon and lost 14kg. But the Geodon wasn't working for depression and bipolar disorder, so I switched back to Seroquel - which works best for me for depression, but now taking Metaformim (blood sugar regulator) to stop the weight gain and it worked perfectly! I've been on seroquel 200mg and metaformim 500mg twice a day for 3 months now and I actually lost 3kg! Can't believe ho well metaformin helped.

Thank you for your feedback, this is very interesting, I was on risperdal for many years and never gain weight, so I guess we are all different and as yourself it is a 'trial an error' situation. All the very best and have a nice day. Catherine.

Hi my experience with seroquel is mixed, I did put on weight on 600mg quite a lot, I then reduced to 300mg and lost weight, though having reduced I have found myself not sleeping again, am going to try abilify which apparently is better than seroquel, so time will tell, am starting next week. take care - Catherine

Hello Jennyjenness, obviously I am not a psychiatrist but I would think that on such a low dose it would be ok, you will know very soon within 3 to 6 weeks. Good luck and take care - Catherine

Yes basically seroquel is a nightmare, am going to try abilify as I need to sleep this was the great effect of seroquel but at the end though my weight is stable and I have lost some since I reduce from 300 from 600 and for me had no withdrawal problem. Take care - CatherineCVJF

yes I have heard this before, how great it is to feel better in one way and having very unwanted side effects!

I really know how you feel, seroquel for me served its purpose to allow me to sleep, I use to take 600mg at night and this gave me a slurred speech, very unpleasant as you may imagine, my psych sent me to a neurologist for mri scan etc and yest it was seroquel. I reduced to 350 mg and still was able to sleep and could not lose any weight I took myself down to 300mg and lost some weight but now I cannot sleep again so am going to switch to abilify it seems that some people put on weight, some lost some and it did not have any weight related side effects on others, so will start next week and will see but this time if I put on one pound of weight I will stop it and look for an older anti psychotic like geodon, my psich is great and always discuss drugs with me - I think for me seroquel is about the dosage and not just only the drug. On another point since I am going down on seroquel I have more obsessive and self destructive thoughts. Take care - Catherine
