Prolia Side Effects (Page 56) (Top voted first)
UpdatedI would like to know of any side effects others may have experienced after receiving Prolia infusions. Up to now I have none.
Memory difficulty is the first problem I noticed after my second Prolia shot. I would be typing and suddenly forget what word I wanted to use. I'm only 56 but was afraid I was having the start of dementia. That only lasted about two days but the physical symptoms have gradually gotten worse every day. I have popping and grinding noises in my jaw, and my teeth seem to be spreading out. My hip bones ache all the time while the rest of my back goes through waves of strong pain, the worse being my low back, where I had surgery. It really burns all across my upper back, neck, and shoulders. I have to take muscle relaxers and ibuprophen every 3-4 hours just to allow me to lay down and not hurt. If I wait, it takes an hour for the pain to ease and that is laying curled up and very still. It has given me nausea, acid reflux, indigestion, and anxiety to the point of trembling. I am also having to take more anxiety meds more often. When I stand my blood pressure drops and I feel faint. I can't walk very far without feeling weak, and am achy all the time. My vertigo is also worse. I had just started a low carb diet around the time I started having problems and thought it was just the Atkins flu. I tried it for a month but stayed bloated and feeling flu-like symptoms. Even now that I am eating more carbs, I am still sickly. My second shot was in March so I hope that it gets out of my system soon. (The first shot and following six months were fine).
Net~it varies by person and toleration to the drug and how great of care you get. I had my rheumatologist who works with an immunologist working on me so I was well after the 6 months were up. That does not mean that I am totally symptom free since I am still experiencing the hair loss and a certain muscle in my neck near the injection site is still sore if I don't take my pain meds. After one stops the Prolia the bones return immediately to the pre-Prolia state and my spine is a 'mess'. That's the official diagnosis of my orthopedic specialist. It only reacts badly when I want to lie down in bed and that does hurt! They are all jammed together now with no cushion between them. This is not Prolia related. It's from osteoarthritis I have had since I was a teen. Be well~Pood
Lois~Did you read what I posted about side effects from Prolia? There are various infections and that is due to the fact that Prolia diminishes some of our immune system so it's probably the reason you got that infection. Gall bladders are best out if you have a great surgeon. I had mine done in the morning and wanted dismissed from the hospital. He told me I would be dismissed if I could keep my lunch down. I did so I went back to work and had to work until midnight that night as we were having a yearly budget meeting of the board. I could not eat cashews for a few years and that was the only problem I had with that surgery. Some people have a lot of food problems after this surgery. I sincerely hope you do equally as well as I did!! Be well~Pood
Poodle, I'm hopping angry with the runaround I'm getting with the medical system at the moment. It was my physiotherapist who also told me that I had had a previous shoulder dislocation and that could also be what was causing me so much pain. I have a friend who knows a retired orthopedic surgeon who kindly offered to look at my MRI. After reviewing it I was told that surgery could possibly help me. I was given the names of 2 top Drs to get a referral to. I gave the info to my GP who just contacted me today to say she was contacting the ortho Dr I had previously seen for all of 5 minutes, to get a referral. I have now contacted the patient advocate at the hospital where I saw him to see if they can help me. Most discouraging. I just had a front tooth pulled last week due to Prolia....it goes on and on! On top of all of this my husband had an episode of shaking and the same hospital says he now has epilepsy and the only test he had was a catscan which showed nothing! I'm learning quickly to navigate a very frustrating system to get the help that we need and deserve. Fortunately I have a patient advocate who believes we require some answers. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that 3 inj's. of a drug could cause me so many problems. My oral surgeon on hearing I had been on Prolia was incensed as she said it was a terrible drug which caused most of my oral problems. Also shocked that it was a gynecologist that prescribed it! If only I had talked to her 2 years ago! I know I'm ranting but I'm so frustrated with trying to get some help. Poodle, you have given me some hope that possibly there is something that can give me some relief. I don't want to depend on painkillers the rest of my life. I still have a lot of living to do!
I did report my reaction to amgen and they filed a safety report. Day 21 of my misery. Not feeling hopeful of any improvement in the foreseeable future.
terrible stuff - evil drug - after several weeks still feel pain, nauseaus, headache, I will never do more of this stuff
Hey Poodle,
Oh ma gosh, I'm back as I'm writing this in the ER, left neck feels like electrical shock , four days now. It goes under my skull up left side of brain. Just had CTwContrast , waiting on ER Doctor for results . I can't help but think that it's part of my symptoms brought on by Prolia shot. Yes, my bones or gums hurt all over and it isn't constant the pain shifts from one area to the next, alternately :( weird , pain does not allow me to rest.. That is some awesome info on the old meds for Osteoporosis, I'm going to find a specialist and check on the drug you mentioned.. I'm so grateful for your post. Folks that are not involved have no possible idea of the struggles to try to get better. I have the biggest issue with my docs when they say , "you need to realize this is who you are now", I will push on and hope all the good people on this forum do as well , I want natural to replace the horrible drugs that have been used on me. Thank you and God Bless
Gracie
Judy~please stop freaking out. When they put in the implants, they use ground up donor bone to fill in for what we lack. It's not taking out anything from you. When they do the implants, they just stuff that around where we need it so they will heal properly in bone. There is hardly any pain involved. I go for sedation because I don't want to know about it. When I wake up I have some pain meds that work and ice packs. It's not bad or terrible at all. It's a good thing!! This good thing is expensive tho. I have no idea how much they cost where you live. Mine were $5,000 for two and Linda lives in a different State and hers were even cheaper than mine. The crowns that go on top of the implants are a separate charge and are made for you by your own dentist. They cost the same as an average crown does. Please stop fearing this. It's a very good thing. It's very sad that Prolia does this to us but in the end, we get teeth that will outlast us. That is what they mean by grafting -- just stuffing ground up donor bone into our jaws so they can properly hold the implants. It's been super cleansed and we can only thank the people that left their bodies to help all of us. Feel better now? Hugs~Pood
I too was incapicated, big time, for over a year. This drug was poison to me. I'd join a class action suite if there is one.
Will find out from my attorney. Make sure you have your paper trail started. All dr visits scripts given. Daily log of what you are going through any conversations with your dr and Amgen. I have started my lawsuit if we are able to get one 1 attorney to handle all of us that would fine with me. Please spread the word they can't get away this.
Thanks, Poodle.
The last few days have been an improvement, except for my bladder.
Unfortunately, it will be awhile before my Cystoscopy. My Dr. suspects
ulceration;
something I have not had in 20+ years of IC.
I wish everyone good health
Hi
Please keep us posted as to what your attorney has to say. I saw one and he said nothing he could do...
Goat C. Is your attorney doing the typical 60-40 split with you? If you win, you get the 60% but out of that amount is deducted every phone call, piece of paper and postage stamp. I know. I won one not too terribly long ago and out of my $44,000 I personally received $22,000 and we did not even go to Court. We settled in mediation. That's how much phone calls to expert witnesses cost and postage, etc. The attorney gets the 40% PLUS ALL EXPENSES which they fail to state correctly. On another one that did go to Court that was a very large class action suit, I received a letter from the Court telling me I had won and received zero sum. That was good news. That will never happen to Amgen. They have the full blessing from all of our respective governments. Pood
Hello Again,
Just following up on my earlier post, my pain is unbelievable, can't seem to get it together, my bones hurt and my body feels flu-like, this shot has stopped me from
doing my everyday task. I get up, get motivated only to say, some other day I will do this, because of my body, I hurt so bad, all over.. I don't understand why it is lingering.
I have had this shot before and the nurse , asked have you had a reaction in the past, to which I replied, my body had pain, and I ached all over, had shortness of breath, however, at the same time, I have fibromyalgia, so I thought, it must be my fibro, but, now that I had another Prolia shot the link is undeniable, my intense pain is from the shot! I just can't go, I feel like I have been sick with the flu ever since the shot! I called my primary care doctor and was told it could linger in my body for months, and , "who knows if there is permanent damage".
I hate this, and can't fix it, my everyday chores have to wait until I can get a grip on what is happening to me from a shot! Also I am having horrible shortness of breath, have had to cancel plans with my child and grandchildren because of pain/breathing. Breathing poorly, causes so much mental confusion, I can't take care of business, it is getting out of hand.
My hair is falling out, and I have pain in my hands that will not allow me to hold a coffee cup for any length of time, I have dropped a cup because of pain. It's ridiculous .. No person should have to endure this pain. I will never ever take another shot of Prolia! I will take my D Vitamins and all other natural meds to try to maintain. I might also add, that I took the Forteo shot in the stomach for 2 years, I did not have this pain, I was walking everyday and now, can't seem to go walk because I am confused, (breathing/pain), can't do it, terrible.
Also, the shortness of breath makes me PANIC like crazy, feels like air is coming in from a tiny straw and I can't get it quick enough, so I have to calm myself with breathing slow deliberate breaths.. of course that is tough when the air will not come in quick enough. So how many trips to the ER? Many, in fear of not breathing , it's terrible!
And that is what it's all about. The lawyers capitalize and the the poor patients get crumbs. It's DISGUSTING!
I wanted to say Thank You to all of y'all for sharing your problems after getting a Prolia infusion. I was just days away from getting my first one when I found this forum. I was very reluctant to get it even before I found this forum but y'all s stories made up my mind for me. It was scheduled for yesterday 8/22/17 but I called the day before and cancelled it.
My bone density scan came back at -4.2 so my doctor recommended Prolia. I have always been very cautious about committing to any long term medications so decided to do my research on this one and I am so glad I did. I will just take my chance of broken bones since I really don't think I can stand any more pain added to what I already live with. I have lived with osteoarthritis for many years and that is enough to have to deal with.
I am so sorry to read about what so many of y'all are going through and pray that you will all find a way to get back to life before Prolia.
Thank you Sal. It is not so much wise as it is mistrusting of the drug companies. I truly do hate what they are doing to those they are supposed to be trying to help, for nothing more than the almighty dollar.
I had resisted even having the bone scan because I was pretty sure what it would say but when my family doctor retired and I had to start seeing a new to me one I felt pressured to have it done. I expected it to be bad but -4.2 surprised even me. It surprised and concerned me enough to consider his advice to start the prolia infusions until I started digging around and found out just how horrible this stuff can really be.
Seem like I just have to train another Doctor. He will learn that I will not take most of what he will want to recommend. He even called in a prescription for cholesterol medication for me without even discussing it with me. Needless to say I didn't pick it up. My sister swears that her fibro started when she was put on the statin line of drugs. I will just stick to my red yeast rice. I had slacked off of it for a while but by the time I have my next blood test my cholesterol will be back where it should be without touching his dangerous drugs.
The only two things I actually need him for at this point is for my Levothyroxin (been taking it for at least 20 years and really had to think about it before committing to it for the rest of my life), my Tramadol (it keeps my osteo bearable) and occasional blood tests. Seems Doctors are sometimes necessary but I learned long ago that they are not GOD even though some of them think they are. I know that there are some very good doctors though and for that I am thankful.
For someone new to this forum searching for answers. Please Please think long and hard before allowing this dangerous drug into your body. You may be one of the lucky one but do you really want to play Russian Roulette with your health. Be well ladies and gentlemen.
Same here, Goat C. It came as q Schick because my previous study was nowhere near this level. What clinched it for me was finding out I had spinal fractures. That was when I was pressured, and since I was frightened, I was vulnerable and caved in. I rue the day. My life is just beginning to resume; although I am no way ready for Pilates!..
Mattie~There i an old one that works and works well but Drs. don't like it. There is no money in it. It is called Calcitonin. It's made from salmon but has zero fish smell. It works by putting down new bone, not old bone like Prolia does. Your best bet to get a script would be from an Orthopedic Specialist/surgeon. My Mother had extremely severe osteoporosis and after she started on it, she never broke another bone in her life and she did fall often. I got mine from a different Doctor. I LOVE it. I fell on my new hip on the hardwoods and nothing happened to me at all. I got up and kept on going. There is help but it is difficult to get. It does not interfere with the immune system at all. You stay healthy and well and it builds up your bones. Check it out please. Pood
Mattie,
Don't forget to eat your greens!
Also bone broth( especially chicken - highest in collagen) can be helpful.
