Updated

I would like to know of any side effects others may have experienced after receiving Prolia infusions. Up to now I have none.

thank you for being honest with your symptoms, i have a prolia at the pharmacy to pick up and after reading about your problems, i am cancelling the prescription, i pray your symptoms ease up and go away, but thank you for sparing someone else with your honesty. I hope all will be okay with all the poor women who are suffering needlessly, only hoping for a cure

Hi Lynne, I am sorry your friend has to go thru so much....I can relate....It has been 11 months since my 1st Prolia injection...I am still having swallowing difficulty but the breathing is the worst.....was back on steroids for the last several months...nebulizer, inhalers, added Singular....with all my other meds and the inflammation in my lungs and airway is bad....at least the horrible rash is gone....but pain, aching doesn't stop....
The endocrinologist still wants to try another ostio med.....I will not let this happen......
I also have numerous fractures in 3 vertibra's in my thoracic spine....the pain has been awful.....difficult driving..... luckily the guy I live with is doing most of the driving.... but I miss my independence. The thing is, my primary doctor say's the fractures will only continue and get worse.....I will always be on high doses of calcium and VitD...because of the HypoParathyroid....The Prolia also drops levels of calcium - and my hands and feet cramp and twist in severe pain......so I am always doing lab work and up-ing my calcium and VitD...while my hands and feet are twisting and cramping I drink "tonic
water" (quinine) which seems to help.....and get heat on them (Hot water) socks, hot shower, electric blanket....
all seemsto help a little......We have to keep going.....so tell your friend she isn't alone in this....
Beaming her Hugs, Barbie

Have just been perscribed Prolia for my osteoporosis and was wanting some feedback from people that have taken it. I am really scared to get the injection and would like to hear how well everyone has done . I've read some really bad things about this but my doctors keep telling me not to pay any attention to those things.

Hiya I took 1 shot of Prolia and for 6 months felt terrible!
One thing after another but the worse was the bladder infections and the deep deep pain I had. My doctor said the same thing don't listen to them but my pharmacist told me she would not talk it is they paid her. Ask your pharmacist or better yet go the the pharmacy in your local hospital and ask them what the said effects are.
I did not take a second shot. I still have numbness in my leags that keeps me awake all night at time. And pain that only vicodin will take away ... I use to work in a pharmacy and I know doctors won't tell you everything.
This is not the wonder drug they wanted it to be. I won't take it again. I won't take reclast either. I am on calicium and Vit D Period!!! Hugs Sed

Sedona,
Shoot, my doctor assured me that the side effects should only last a few weeks. She insisted that I have it because my CTx levels were high even though I am not fully in osteoporosis yet.
My worst side effect has been that my immune system is weaker. I am a teacher and exposed to a lot, but until the Prolia was able to avoid most of it. After that I had 3 colds/virus in 6 weeks! Plus night sweating, numbness in my feet and fingers, digestive issues, etc.
Won't be taking this again, or at least not until after I retire!

I have had two shots, but will NOT take another. First one, side effects were not bad. A few weeks after the second shot, I began to have sudden, very intense dizzy spells - they come on in an instant with no warning and last up to 45 seconds or so. By the grace of God it hasn't happened while driving, or doing anything that would cause harm to myself or to someone else. I am extremely achey and have wondered if it is just arthritis, or the prolia. I had an MRI on my brain due to the dizzy spells and everything is normal. Nothing has changed in my life except for the prolia.

hi faith,
Think those with immune problems to start with, many of us, are made worse with extreme drugs, prolia seems to be one, by responses, my friend jean still wonders if its still in her system going up to l8month since. Though her sysmptoms from it not as bad, and she did have a fall last friday, broke her shoulder, in pain with it, but still she prefers that to prolia side effects. So best wishes.

I actually was supposed to get the shot today. I called the dr's asst beforehand and asked if there were side effects. She put me on hold, came back to the phone and said "No." When I got there for the shot, the nurse told me of possible side effects. All news to me. Asked to speak with dr. First. Dr called me later and said she thought it was an effective job, but she didn't want to pressure me. I need some root canals done and cavities filled. After reading this, even if there are people out there who are doing fine on the drug, I've decided it's not worth the risk at this time. Thanks for your postings. I hope these are all accurate accounts.

Hi Ladies:-I was wondering if any of you have had a memory loss. The other day my husband and I went to the bank to take our U.S. Travellers Check put back into our account I took my car because I had to go to the Mall afterwards. After the bank I dropped my husband off at the house and headed for the Mall, but I ended up at Pharmacy Ave. And I don't remember a thing from the time I dropped my husband off until I got to Pharmacy Ave which by the way was in the opposite direction to the Mall. I feel bad for all of you because I know the kind of pain that you have. I am so sick of being in such pain all the time. It is really grreat to have a sight like this one and be able to compare symptoms and to know that you are not making things up. Thanks for your support.

My doctor never told me of any side affects whatsoever, it was only about 10 days later I received a Newsletter from ProliaVital, to call nurse in case of problems - this should be given as a last resort, when all else has failed. To be given to cancer patients - I do not even have osteoporosis, test confirms this - all I had I fractured my wrist, falling on ice in Dec 2011. Prolia was just the new kid on the market, and we were the first ones to get to the trials. First FDA wasn't going to approve it - then a few months later they did. So did Canada. I am from Canada, and nobody told me a thing, I learned it from the paper that was sent with a bottle of Calcium pills (which the doctor didn't tell me to take any) and ofcourse the info) which I had to use May 19, 2011, as I nearly passed out in the morning and the nurse told me to go to ER - the left side was completely numb. Yes and I have lumps and bumps on all the gums - the pains - the heat/cold baths - so, we trusted the doctor and nobody told us of the side affects, believe me, I WOULD BE THE FIRST ONE to say NO>>> Now I can read about it the damage is done, how do you get rid of an injection, when even Prolia doesn't know what will happen????? Amegden Pharma is all over the world now spreading their joy and their new Pill.

My wife had her first shot of Prolia May 25th...Right away she started to feel bad..fatigue, tired all the time...Came home from work two weeks after the shot out of breath even when she did small physical things...Tried to play golf with the ladies and had to quit after two holes..I took her to the emergency room..Her hemoglobin level was 6.1...normal is 11 or 12..Little oxygen was getting to her cells and that's why she was out of breath..They told her she was lucky she didn't have a heart attack..They gave her 3 transfusions to build up her blood up again...And it worked.three nights in the hospital...She wasn't bleeding.Probably never did bleed..She hadn't noticed any bleeding at all..That's what they were looking for...Tested her loss of blood with an endoscopy, colonoscopy, and her small intestine with a capsule-camera..NOTHING...the only thing different she did was take this shot of Prolia..NEVER AGAIN..BEWARE!! Anyone else have this problem ??

Hi: I am due to get my 2nd shot on Aug. 13 but I will snot be getting it, too many side effects. I have not been sleeping well, my hands, feet and upper thighs ache all night. Oh how I wish I had read the comments before taking Prolia. My Doctor doesn,t know how long it will take for the Prolia to get out of my system. I saw him the other day because my ankles were so swollen and I was really bloated - told him I felt like the michelin man. You couldn't even see where my ankle bones were. Hope everyone starts to feel better soon.

All good info and just reinforces my decision to avoid all these drugs as I would deadly poison. I hope those of you who are suffering side effects will recover soon. I love my physicians but as someone else pointed out, doctors receive very little pharmacological education and essentially no nutritional education and tens of thousands of new drugs come out each year. No one could keep up with them so they rely on the drug reps for their info. I believe most physicians prescribe these drugs, not from a motivation of personal profit, but from lack of information. I am 74 years old - was diagnosed 25 years ago with severe osteoporosis but have never had a fracture. I have lots of drug allergies and am a nurse practitioner who has seen tons of drug reactions and long-term side effects in my patients from prescription meds, so I tend to be very cautious about putting any medications into my body. Over the past 25 years I have received very heavy pressure from my physicians to take these drugs and have refused them all. Even though I have obviously not suffered by this course of action, it is something new every year. Last year one of them insisted that I take Reclast. I refused so this year he is insisting that I take Prolia. My DEXA scans, as I said before, show no fractures EVER, and even show some improvement in all the tested areas without any prescription drug treatment since my diagnosis but my doctor says it just "isn't worth the risk of getting a fracture". Is he serious? What about the risk of all the things you folks are reporting, and that even the manufacturer admits are risks? My personal advice, in which I have been guided by a Pharm D, is first and foremost to keep your Vitamin D levels up in the 75-100 range. I truly believe that since physicians were not aware of the risk of low Vitamin D levels until the past few years, that it might explain a lot-and not just bone health. My own level was 4 when they started testing me. Secondly, do not take mega supplements of Calcium. My physician told me to take 2000 mg a day but the Pharm D says mega doses have been implicated in calcification of the brain, blood vessels, kidneys, etc. (which I confirmed through research) so get the calcium from your diet. I also take Strontium, a true miracle element. If you aren't familiar with it, here is a link where you can read more:

I personally think that you haven't heard much about it because it is not a money maker for the drug companies. You can buy it on Amazon really cheaply. Nutrition is seldom mentioned by physicians as a treatment for bone health but is absolutely crucial and there are a number of good books out there on diets for strong bones. You must do weight-bearing exercise of some kind. Even if you aren't athletic - and I'm not - there are other activities you can do. I especially love my Wii games. This strategy has worked for me. I am active, on no prescription meds at all, have no joint or bone pain and I want to keep it that way. I have a feeling that these drugs persist on the market because most side effects do not get reported to the FDA (and also because it is primarily a woman's disease). This is probably because patients only report them to their physicians and they, in turn, dismiss them as not due to the drug or never get around to reporting them to the FDA. I think it is quite interesting, however, that over the years, they have quietly stopped prescribing some of the drugs when the full story comes to light. For instance, bisphosphonates have steadily lost market share as the newer, more powerful drugs (incidentally with much longer half-lives for us to recover from) hit the market and the serious adverse results of bisphosphonates become known. Unfortunately, no one really knows what the long term effect of drugs such as Prolia will be but I think it is probably safe to assume that the long term effects of these more powerful drugs will be even more devastating. I also highly recommend the book The Myth of Osteoporosis by Gillian Sanson which I bought on Amazon - a real eye-opener. Stay strong! It is difficult to go against the advice of a respected and trusted physician but in the end, it is your body - not theirs. It is both your right and your obligation to your loved ones to make informed decisions about your health care. Do your homework!

Yesterday I talked to a retired pharmaceutical salesperson. He said many of the new salespersons are not that informed, the occasion for intellectually sound exchange on drug information does not occur, and it is more about selling a product. YOU ARE AT RISK WITH ANY DRUG! We can only share our reactions with one another.

It has been five weeks since my shot. I still wake up feeling like I was in a car accident. The pain from wearing a bra is not worth the effort. I still itch. The deep bone pain is off and on. The joint pain is there. I have problems with my heart racing. I have to be careful about how far I try to walk. My ability to function is limited. How I wish my doctor had listened to me or looked at my records. There were 4 reasons for him to NEVER prescribe the Prolia shot.

tomorrow I am going to pick up some additional vits and I will try and meet with him again. I'll ask about anything that he may be able to suggest to help with lessening the symptoms of this terrible drug. Once again I am so thankful I listened to that voice in my head that told me to question what was being suggested. I have started a prayer chain for those suffering from taking the shot. I don't know names, but our Lord knows who is suffering.

After 2 injections of Prolia I found myself unable to walk. An MRI showed there were 3 atress fractures in my right hip. My doctor said things would have been worse without the Prolia. Stupid me; I trusted him and had 2 more injections. Two months after the 4th x-rays showed stress fractures of the right side of my pelvis. Now I have cellulites, a red rash on the lower parts of my legs that is caused by bacteria getting under the skin. Research found that this is a side effect of Prolia. Finally, my cataracts are growing; another side effect.

I'm in my 4th month after the 2nd shot and my skin looks like I'm 80 years old!! (I'm 63). I never in a million years thought my skin would look like this.Yes I did do alot of waterskiing in my youth and in the sun to much but the red scaly patches all over my arms legs and chest are discusting looking and they were not there before the stupid shot!!! Im force to wear long sleeve tops to cover them. And don't get me started about the itching!!! OMG is it ever going to end?? Does everyone know that this drug also treats prostrate problems as well?? that is what my Dr told me and why a urology dr gave me the shots! As far as advertisements out there, I just saw one the other day with the actress Blythe Danner raving about it!! Feel better my friends...Hopefully it will end soon....:( Pam

If you are smart you WILL NOT TAKE THE SHOT!!I finally found a Dermatologist who took me seriously about the way my skin looks and the un-ending itching. She put me on a steroid cream for a week and a cream to help with the dry scaley skin I've developed since the 2nd prolia shot. The itching is still bad but she said to avoid touching the skin as much as posible and don't use any wash cloths or loofas of any kind to bathe. She said most people over wash their bodies on a daily basis using the wrong sort of soaps and scrub way to much. Wallgreens is where I found the cream and I've used it for 2 days and the dry scaley patches look better already. It is called Vanicream and it feels so good on the body. The red patches are still there but I'm hoping after a week on the streroidal cream it will look better and the itching will finally stop. My other symptoms have gotten better and I know there are alot of you out there suffering alot more than me and I'm sorry about that. Good luck to all..... Pam
