Updated

I would like to know of any side effects others may have experienced after receiving Prolia infusions. Up to now I have none.

My Dr. office just called to set up to have another Prolia shot, I said NO WAY, 2 years out my life between once a week pills, once a month pills then Prolia. She sid so you are not going to take anything, I said that is right! She said well what is bothering you, I said I called office and was told the symptoms I was having was not from shot and go my GP. Nurse said what did your GP say, I said he said he would never have given me this shot in the first place, she had no answer.

Prolia was given to my 81 year old mom. She can hardly walk now , has pain all over her body and feels like she is dying . Class Action Lawsuit is what Iam going to look into , this is horrific . Makes me furious.

I found on FDA's site - Drugs & Devices - Amgen has made 36,330 payments totaling $5.35 million to doctors (If you choose to call them that) to inject innocent patients with the poison drug prolia. It is evident that they value the almighty dollar much more than patients health. Whatever happened to the oath they took! Oh yes, you can get valuable info from propublica. The chief medical officer at Amgen makes over 6 Million a year. Now isn't that just peachy......Getting paid to inflict pain & suffering.

Well Gracie, that is about why all of us got the dreaded Prolia injection - osteoporosis. There is another drug, it's old and Dr. don't like it because there is no money in it. It is Calcitonin. It's made from salmon but has zero fish smell or taste. It does a good job of tackling osteoporosis by putting down new bone instead of old bone like Prolia does. I would have been dead in a year and a half of Prolia. 6 months about did me in. May I ask that you get referred to an Immunologist since most of what Prolia does to us is through our immune system that it depletes to some degree; sufficient for all types of infections. There has to be a reason your gums hurt so badly. Do they hurt on all sides or just the side of the body that got the Prolia injection? When we receive an injection in the arm, it causes muscles and tendons in our arm to go up our neck and into our mouth. It HURTS. I know. I had it too and thought I was getting ONJ. My dentist knows me and knows if I complain, I have a real reason to complain so he started feeling around in my mouth and he found the spot that was causing all the pain. It can be relieved by acupuncture or dry needling. Same idea but using different strategies. Dry needling is done by Physical Therapists. Please get a referral to help you. Pain drugs are for certain types of pain and sometimes they work well and sometimes not. I really and truly believe you will benefit from either of the aforementioned. It can only get better so hang in there lady. Be well~Pood

Once discontinuing inj's., how long does it take to rid my body of residual effects? Any suggestions to speed the process?

Just want to share my experience regarding what I believe to be the effects of Prolia.

I requested my records to establish when I began the Prolia shots. 1st shot in 3/2015, 2nd 10/2015, 3rd 7/2016. By end of July of 2016, I began to experience occasional nausea. Then by September, it was almost every day. I use to tell the young girls at work it must be "morning sickness" because it was so frequent (I was 75 yrs old - then it was no longer a joking matter). The doctor was unable to determine the cause.

In the end of October, I passed out & went to ER and learned I had an internal bleed with absolutely no prior indications. I lost 20% of my blood volume the 1st night, which required 2 blood transfusions. After a long recovery, I began to feel better for awhile and resumed the shots. My last shot (4th) was 5/2017. Now it's August 2017 and I'm back to barely functioning. I believe there is no other explanation for my decline. Therefore, I will no longer take the shots and am hoping for a better quality of life.

Other side effects experienced:
1-Weight loss 20 lbs in 6 months (I only weighed 103 lbs to start).
2-Chronic weakness (not just tiredness)
3-Back pain
4-Hot flashes
5-Dry "patches"

Kell,
I can tell you that my last shot was back in January of this year. I have suffered horribly. Just now, I am beginning to notice some improvement. While I am not power walking 3miles. day, I did slowly walk for 30 minutes.

The exact same happened to my dad. Maybe you'd like to read my stories?? Oct 2014. Sure wish I could give a few shots of this to the doctor that prescribed it to my dad, (for the reason of osteoporosis which had never been mentioned to dad before and was 81 with kidney problems, latex allergies and a perforated small intestine, all reasons probably NOT be given the poison). I'll forever be mad at the doctor as well as the family members who thought this doctor was almost "God" and wouldn't read the articles (about what can or had happened to people) that I took to them to read before they took him to get the deadly shot. It affected dad within a couple of days, he fell, had almost every other side effect listed and never recovered. Now they all blame his death on something different. I believe they listed "breathing problems and heart failure"! Of course.

In my experience, 3 Dr.'s blew off my pain. Since I have Fibromyalgia, they said it was Fibro. This was not the same pain. Finally, I went out of the area to another Dr. He immediately ordered blood tests for Hypocalcemia, and it turned out my Calcium was dangerously low. This is a serious condition and, left untreated, can be fatal. My first symptom was jaw spasms.

It is most important, if you have severe pain and spasm to be checked for Hypocalcemia!

Even if the levels are normal, severe muscle and joint pain can occur. Prolia pulls the Calcium stores out of the muscles to remodel the bones.

I am 15 months past my last shot, and am getting my life back.

Two days after I received my first Prolia shot, I felt as if I pulled a muscle in my groin. Instead of getting better after taking ibuprofen and using heat and rest, it continued to get worse. The pain spread from the groin, around my hip and buttocks, to my lower back. It’s now been over two months and I can’t lift my right leg more than an inch off the ground without pain. When I try to take a step, I get severe pain from my groin, down my thigh to my knee. I’ve had one steroid injection in my hip. I felt a slight improvement the next day, and after that, no improvement. It continues to worsen daily.

After my first pain in my jaw, then it was groin, tops of thighs and low back. This pattern would have remissions send exacerbations. Eventually all my joints became painful and swollen. This pattern is listed in side effects. It took time for it to resolve, although it never fully has. It is important to have your Calcium levels checked, as it is also signs of Hypocalcemia.

Re: Shirley (# 2334) Expand Referenced Message

Shirley, I can wholly understand what you're dealing with. I, too, have lost a front tooth due to Prolia. My immune system was so precarious and I got an infection in my tooth . Eventually I had to have it pulled as it got so loose. That was 9 months ago. My jaw bone would not hold an implant so 6 weeks ago I had a major bone graft and now have to wait to get the implant and then wait for the tooth replacement! I no longer see the MD who prescribed Prolia. I recently had my bone density done and I'm considered medium risk. My GP is hesitant to put me on any meds due to my bad experience with Prolia ( many other sides effects as well as my jaw bone) . At the moment I'm taking large amounts of vitamin D and eating a high calcium diet. I live in Canada and don't know of any class action law suits. The money I have spent on various dental procedures(considered cosmetic and not covered under my plan) as well as creams, physio etc has been over the top.
I am so sorry to hear of your on going problems. We women are Guinea pigs when it comes to drugs for menopause, bones, etc. I've tried to contact the media to do some investigative journalism on this drug to no avail!

Re: Judy (# 2335) Expand Referenced Message

I’m also in Canada. You are not alone...March 30 will be a year since I fell in the trap and accepted my GP’s advice to receive this poison called Prolia that obviously leaves juicy dividends for somebody... definitely not for the patient.....I lost a year of my life already as I have never again been able to go back to being the healthy, fit, active, happy woman I was. I’ve had dental issues, a severe thyroid disorder with an ophtalmopathy; have lost my beautifully healthy hair, my nails are like onion skins.... I also developed a heart artery stenosis, I lost 20 pounds in the first three weeks, my arms and legs were covered with erythemas for weeks, the pain was so unbearable that I had to be taken by wheelchair to the Emergency Dept of the closest hospital... I still continue to have migratory pains and my joints...and I recently heard that many Prolia users have developed Lupus...and other type of auto immune disorders.... I’m a self-employed professional who has been unable to work for a full year......It has become obvious to me that ee are the victims of some sort of clinical trials we did not agreed to parttake or sign ourselves in... We should be at least compensated for the objective losses we have incurred in....I’m keeping my eyes open in case any group action takes place....

I am from Singapore. My friend's dad died within 3 months after only 1 injection. Suffered horrible side effects and a growth in his intestine. Luckily my dad rejected the shot which was recommended by his endocrinologist.

Judy (# 2345) --

Judy, I need to give you my opinion on Prolia allegedly. I was 70 years old. I have never had a broken bone nor did I ever have a surgery. Several months later (oh and by the way I've never fallen) I had to have three separate surgeries in 5 weeks with fractured vertebrae. I have been in bed since November the 2nd 2017. Now my colon flared up and I am cut from above my navel to my private area. I am wearing a colostomy bag. My surgeon said the artery in my stomach was so full of pus I was in toxic shock. I am so thankful that I am still alive today. If you will listen carefully to the commercial that advertises for Prolia it will tell you back fracture. Now at the end they've got a commercial out that you can get an infection; if you don't take shot number two of the drug you will have an infection so bad that will send you to the hospital. I feel absolutely horrible. This is a woman writing to you that worked 3 days a week for 10 to 12 hours every Sunday of my life. Now I'm on a walker trying to rebuild my strength walking to the stop sign at the end of my street. Ladies and Gentlemen by the grace of God please do your homework before you ever ever receive this drug. God bless you and I hope this gives you a little insight on potentially what this drug can do. If this has helped you in any way please let me know.

Re: Maritere (# 2356) Expand Referenced Message

Hi, Maritere,I do eat lots of greens and calcium rich food. My recent blood tests show my calcium and vitamin D levels are in the high range. As far as weights, I know that as soon as I can I will start a daily routine of weights. This last year I haven't been able to do any as I've been dealing with an extremely painful rotator cuff tear. After a few cortizone injections and physio it's finally on the mend and now this break! I've also just had a bone graft in my upper front jaw to prepare it for an implant. I am 76 , have been extremely active, biking, hiking , cross- country skiing( whenever we get enough snow around Toronto!) and then...whamoo, Prolia has completely changed my life as it has yours . I get so angry whenever I think about the Dr who prescribed it and told me she'd never had a patient have any side effects and when I started getting them, blaming them on the stress of dealing with my husbands stroke. He's fine, in good physical shape , walks every day ,so I don't know what she's talking about. I see the orthopedic Dr in a few days and I know he's going to push osteo drugs on me. I'm small boned, slight ....a perfect candidate so I'm reading all I can to counter any opposition I may get!ill update in a few days re the appt. ??

Don't go anywhere near it...just read the comments from everyone else and be warned. I wish I had been able to access this site before I allowed myself to be bullied into Prolia by 3 different medicos.

Re: ANTONETTE (# 2449) Expand Referenced Message

I second Antoinette. My apologies for not making myself clear. My point was that it seems to be prescribed indiscriminately by Dr.s who aren't even specialists in the field. That being said, it shouldn't even be available at all. I agree that no one should be taking it at all.
Since recalling it us unlikely, all we can do is to educate people.

I had my first prolia shot in Aug of 2017 and broke out in rash and itching in my vaginal area. Didn’t contact my Dr. cause I thought it was coincidental. The rash was also under my arms. Lost all the hair under my arms and it never grew back. I had my 2nd shot March of 2018 and the same thing happened. This time attacking my scalp with dozens of itchy pimples and itching all over my body. It’s driving me crazy with no relief. It’s been almost 3 months now. Afraid it may never go away.

Re: Judy (# 2459) Expand Referenced Message

I also have had the problem inside my mouth. Prior to the Prolia shot, I had gotten a cold sore maybe twice in my life time. Within two weeks of the shot I had to go to the dentist because I thought I had a gum infection... he said it was the same thing that causes the cold sores.. herpes simplex 1...but really raging inside my mouth. Since then I have had 2 more outbreaks..both inside my mouth. I am currently taking an antiviral medication to stop the current outbreak. I think ( again just my opinion) the Prolia messes with our immune system and dormant stuff in the body flairs up.
