Have any women used hormone replacement therapy (HRT) as a successful treatment for osteoporosis? ## I have a friend who is doing great on HRT. ## I have been happy with being on HRT. It seems as though it slows my bone loss. I recommend weight bearing exercises and HRT. ## It has successfully helped some women, since it can slow bone loss. You can read more on MedLine Plus about the treatment options. As was also mentioned, weight bearing exercises, if approved by your doctor, can also help. My mother-in-law recently saw a specialist who told her to eat yogurt on a daily basis, in addition to her regular dairy intake. What other treatment options have been offered to you?

osterporosis bonebuilding fromEli Lilly ## I think you are referring to Forteo - at least that's how I know it to be spelled. Here's a little background. How does it work? This medicine contains the active ingredient teriparatide, which is a type of medicine called a bone formation agent. Teriparatide is a synthetic version of the human parathyroid hormone, produced by the parathyroid glands. This hormone is involved in the metabolism of calcium and phosphorous. Teriparatide mimics the effects of the natural human hormone and is used to increase bone formation. Bone is not a static structure. There is a continual turnover over of bone in the body; bone is formed by cells called osteoblasts, and is broken down by cells called osteoclasts. In women at the menopause, blood levels o...

I have been prescribed Tymlos but my insurance denied me. I'm in the appeal process and my dr. says we could start Reclast if I am again denied. Any suggestions on how to obtain Tymlos? And does anyone have experience with Reclast? ## I get my Tymlos free. I had no Rx Insurance. I am retired and on Medicare. My arthritis Dr sent in an application for me and I was approved. You might ask your Dr's office as they should know how to apply for help. You might not get it free but if your insurance denied you then you may get a significant amount of help... Does anyone have any experience with this drug? After my first shot, I had lower back pains and a mild headache. ## I have Been taking tymlos for two months. Feel more stiff than before use. Just updating my situation with severe diarrhea after Prolia shots. I have gone on a totally gluten free diet and what a relief!! My bowels are back to normal (took just four days) and I feel sooo much better overall. The gluten free diet is very expensive, however, I feel it is well worth the cost to not spend my life in the lavatory. Seriously, some attorneys need to start a legal suit against the company that put this poison onto the market to be inj.'ed into unsuspecting patients, causing celiac disease/gluten sensitivity, and all the myriad of other problems I have been reading about. ## Hello, Jeena! How are you? A change in bowel habits can be a normal side effect of Prolia, according to FDA reports. You may also experience nausea, fatigue, headache, and anemia. As to the glu...

Manufactured by amgen for treating osteoporosis. ## Prolia, which uses the active ingredient Densoumab to treat post-menopausal Osteoporosis. As of writing this message, it has not yet been approved by the FDA for general use in the U.S., so the information I have on it is limited. Did you have any specific questions? ## I had been injected with prolia for three years, twice a year for a total of 6 shots which are quite expensive. My doctor wanted to inject me again, but I think I had to stop. So far, I had not any side effect.

My hip bone numbers are worse after the 6 month shot. ## Not all medications and treatments work for everyone that tries them, that's why they are usually several choices available in any given therapeutic category. The FDA lists the typical side effects of Prolia as possibly including bladder infection, arm/leg pain and back pain. You may need to speak to your doctor about trying an alternative. Is there anything else I can help with? ## This is a terrible drug. I only took 2 injections in 9/14 and 3/15, but still have the resulting hair damage and jaw pain. My ENT and Dentist both told me that my jaw is messed up...Prolia does mention that as a side effect, but not hair damage. My immune system is weaker too...even 3 years after stopping Prolia. Yeah I'll just take the Osteopo...

Please help. My hair has always been my pride and f***ing joy. I figured since it is pretty damn healthy, it could deal with some bleach damage. And I figured the master stylist who did all the color-corrections would know how much would be too much. I was wrong, and now I want to burst into tears every time I look at my hair or touch it. I just don't know what to do. my hair has also NEVER been shorter than this and it breaks and falls out. What should i do to regrow hair? ## This was in 2015...was it Prolia that did it? I had 2 shots in 2014 and 2015 (2 total). I had great hair, but my experience was like yours. Now in 2019 it looks healthier, but barely grows...and I wear it long...or did! How is yours.

Age 49. I've had 18 months of no cycle. On Forteo for 3 weeks and suddenly I wake to menstrual bleeding? Anyone else experience this? ## Hello Marika, According to the NIH Forteo page (sections 5 and 6) and the Forteo website this is not listed as a common/known side effect associated with Forteo. The Forteo website "encourages you to report negative side effects of Prescription drugs to the FDA Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch or call 1-800-FDA-1088". I recommend that you discuss this issue with your primary care doctor immediately as this could be a more threatening issue than simple menstrual bleeding. I hope this helped, let me know if you have any additional questions.

My bone density loss was -2.6 on December 2015, but after my third shot, my bone scan came back as -2.0 and I am going for a 4th shot this month. Can you tell me how many more shots I can go for, in order to become normal? I know my doctor might not be able to tell me how long. Please give me advice. Thank you! ## It sounds like your bone density loss has improved since the third shot. Do you find that to be the case as well based on how you feel? Have you gotten your 4th shot yet? And have any bone density results came back after the 4th shot to help determine your progress? In regards to how many shots one may need in order for bone density to become normal, my conclusion based on other Prolia discussion threads here, is that there's no way to know for certain because we all respo...

I took prolia shot almost a year ago. I have gum disease for first time now. Can I safely get gum treatment and deep cleaning? Do I treat it differently because of Prolia? Do I risk worse infection? Do I take antibiotics first? Should I wait 6 more months to be more prolia free? ## Hello Janet, Here is what the National Institute of Health has to say on this matter. [1] NIH Prolia Information Section 5.4 "For patients requiring invasive dental procedures, clinical judgment of the treating physician and/or oral surgeon should guide the management plan of each patient based on individual benefit-risk assessment." Basically this means that it's going to be up to your doctor and dentist to determine what is safe and if your oral situation needs to be addressed immediately or can...

Osteoporosis med. Forteo Pen adiministration instructions ## My patient was taking Forteo for 2 months now, but it just so happened that she was not able to purchase another pen ahead of time. Will she able to use the remaining drug in the pen while waiting for the delivery of the next pen? Thank you. ## You should follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer, your doctor, or pharmacist. MJ, it is doubtful, since most will not load and administer it another time, they are meant for their initial uses and that's it. The FDA lists the typical side effects of this medication as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, and joint/muscle aches. How are you both doing? ## I am a female of 65 and only started taking forteo shots two months ago. Since I started the new syringe...

I have severe osteoporosis, have lost SEVEN inches off my height, and look like a turtle with the big hump on the back. My specialist recommended Prolia which I started two years ago. After the first shot I got severe diarrhea starting about ten days later. I had been treated with an antibiotic so my Dr. thought that was the cause. After the second shot the diarrhea came back and the Dr. recommended Align probiotics (and any others I cared to take --"the more the better"). This helped and I have taken three probiotics a day every day since. I had my last shot in August and am again suffering with horrible diarrhea. I will NOT get another shot of this poison--I have heard it causes gluten allergies so guess I will try a gluten-free diet to see if it will help. I am sure you all a...

I am a 65 year old female and started taking Forteo at age 63 due to a low bone density and family history of osteoporosis. I had very painful side effects in most of my joints and muscles. I stopped taking it after 3 months and the pain went away after several more months. Two years down the road, and not on any medications, the same pains have returned and have persisted for the last 5 months. The pain is especially bad once I lay down at night. Today I cannot lift my arm over my shoulder, my thumb is so painful I can not write a grocery list and, after hiking 5,000 foot mountains just 6 months ago, I need assistance to get in or out of bed. I have tested negative for bone cancer and Lyme disease. Rheumatoid arthritis has been ruled out but without conclusive testing. Has anyone had t...

after my last dental hygiene appt. my dentist came in and stated the nurse who cleaned my teeth saw many cavities. they did x-rays. i suddenly have 9 cavities & 2 root canals. i never had this before. i contacted amgen, who produce the shot. they said no one has had trouble w/their teeth, just jaw problems. if anyone has had this type of problem, please write in. thank you ## How long of a time period was there between when you received the Prolia and the dental appointment? Are you on any other medications? The reason I'm asking is because many medications can cause dry mouth, which can allow the bacteria that would normally be washed away by saliva to remain on the teeth and cause higher and faster rates of decay, than normal. Therefore, it may not necessarily be directly rela...

I took Prolia two months ago. I am developing loose teeth and sore spots on my gums. Have others experienced similar problems after taking Prolia? I go to the dentist regularly and have had no dental problems for several years. ## Hello, Dorrie! How are you? You should see your dentist to have this checked out. In certain rare cases, Prolia can cause osteonecrosis of the jaw, it's unlikely, but it would be best to have it checked out, to be sure. Other side effects, as listed by the FDA, may possibly include headache, vertigo, sciatica, anemia and rash.
