Joplin Missouri, help finding a doctor who will leave me on a reasonable dose of klonopin. I lost my doc of 8 yrs. he was taking care of all of my medical needs and a long standing problem with depression and anxiety. I have seen many doctors who gave me every anti depression med, ssri and snri but the side effects just made everything worse. But after 15 years of suffering he added klonopin with citalopram and for the first time I felt normal. I told him at 54 years of age I knew about addiction and by using a nominal amounts of klonopin I did not care. If a med is healpfull why not utilize it? After all is it beter to be an alcoholic? can some one lead me to a common sense doc who is open to prescribing klonopin in the Joplin Mo area?

Xanax yes they have a stigmatizum they work, I'd rather go through withdrawal then wake up every day and in the middle of the night I'm a panic and crying until you walk in someone's shoes you shouldn't judge! Do you know how bad it hurts nor beingable to play with my 2yo because my anxiety is none stop? It's living torture is rather be dead! I don't want my son growing up with a sick mom that can only get up to feed or change him then to have depression on top of itand bipolar don't get me started!

Annie, at that dose it is best that you stop taking this medicine. You are certainly not an addict and can live without it now that your doctor is gone. You will not face withdrawal problems like the abusers, and can possibly find something herbal that will work just as well!

@Dr Joey, Damn you you always have the right responses. And the buspar was ok but the dose I needed you could knock out a horse. Why do DRs never give Valium any more? It is much longer lasting and good for PTSD. You did the right thing for your sister. I wish I had a brother with your experience. I have to give you a plug here (you deserve it) lol. Anyone who posts on here listen to this guy he knows his s***. You may not like what he has to say but I will be damned he is right!!! He has helped me unknowingly by reading his posts, if you want good advice listen to him. As much as we addicts think we may know it all or no one knows what I am going through we don't or we wouldn't be posting on this site. Good luck to all

@sick and tired: Thanks for the compliments. The primary reason we don't write for Valium any longer is because the brand is SO expensive (and many insurance companies simply won't fill Valium (brand name) scripts with the real deal) and except possibly Sandoz, we can't find a generic company that produces even remotely equivalent generics. Word in the pharmacies is that NO STORE gets anything but "INDEFINITELY BACK-ORDERED". That does for our hospitals pharmacies, too, and we spend MAJOR bucks on generics. I tried it for myself when I was prescribed Valium by my shrink. I asked him for a generic script and was bad the next day, telling him 4 x 5mg tabs barely lowered my pulse rate an BP, let along effect my anxiety level.) Other docs may have different reasons, but mine is that the generics available simply do not work. I wouldn't expect a pt to take a pill I find unsatisfactory. (Theoretically, I could up the dose greatly and that MIGHT work, but prescribing 20mg of Valium QID is a sure way to draw attention from the state CS folks, eventually the DEA..The law assumes all generics are created equally and that;s simply not so. We shrinks have a whole "underground" where we share "almost-equivalent" generic companies It does help.)

And how many doctors — other than your FP — have you consulted about this problem? Personally, I don't see a flock of shrinks running and hiding from a patient with legitimate Anxiety Disorder (of whatever type). I"m not stating that I;d let you tell me what to write for, but I'd give your case the professional assessment it deserves. Xanax isn't a particularly good drug for anxiety; duration is too short and that;s the rule for addiction potential. We've known this since Seconal is the 1940s.

Wow I have never seen so many people trying to find a doctor for xanax. As Dr. Joey says xanax is a short acting drug that is usually only prescribed when you have DOCUMENTED history of PTSD or GAD if you don't know what they stand for you don't need xanax. If you have no Family Practitioner get one, I feel like I am repeating a former post. If you are experiencing panic attacks on a regular basis.Which means your heart is racing you feel like an elephant is on your chest then go to an ER. Let them do a work up on you and if they feel you are in need of a drug they will give it to you, If you are addicted to opiates and you have not seen treatment chances are you may or may not be abusing prescription drugs. Get into treatment and beat one drug at a time. The link AJ posted is great but if you or I can find a Doctor who prescribes the most xanax prescriptions I bet the DEA has him on a watch list. So get a game plan be honest. Remember when Mom said the best policy is honesty, well Mom was right the same as make sure you change your underwear every day ya never know whats gonna happen. I feel for you and by no means have the answer to the Big debate over benzo's I just know from personal experience I have a great Doctor who I am honest with and he prescribes me what I need, I have been around the block a time or two and this is what has worked for me. if you have no insurance buy some. If you can not afford them you may qualify for medicaid. If you do have insurance call them and ask for a list of doctors in your area. Medical records are important they are what your doctor needs to prescribe correctly and your lifeline to good health no matter what your problem is. Good luck to all and read DR. Joeys posts.

@sick and tired: Thanks for your endorsement. I prescribe — and take — benzos. I don't just do a one-size (Xanax) fits all tx plan. That's not good medicine; it's borderline malpractice. I have GAD and PAD. When I told my shrink, I was sure I had GAD, he prescribed Xanax; as time progressed, we realized I had PAD "minus one" — I've never had the strong feeling that if I didn't get out of where was, I would die or be killed. Just about all of my PAD patients had the full compliment of symptoms listed in the DSM. Meanwhile, my shrink and I decided that it was time to use the DOC for PAD — Klonopin. It works very well. S & T is right — you do not TELL your doctor what he is to prescribe, even though you certainly can tell a new doc what you've been on a for what. If you wanna write or own scripts go to medical school and take the licensing Boards. I may decide that you don't needXanax, but another med. That's why I have an MD after my name. This sense of entitlement is unbelievable. S&T is write that doctor who write for bushels of Xanax are being looked at by the DEA, your state Controlled Substance Bureau or both. Generally, S&T's statements are spot on. There are occasional exceptions, such as a short-term script following a death in the family, but basically Xanax is officially indicated for PAD and I'm not sure if GAD if officially listed, but we do prescribe it for that disorder as well.

Thanks Dr. Joey you are my ideal Doctor. I realize that many of the people on this site are desperate. But the only official one that has MD after their name is you. I have gotten a lot out of your posts, I also unfortunately have a lot of experience with anxiety issues. This site was not created for a doctor shopping info site. We come here to share experience strengths and solutions. I have walked more than a mile in most of these folks shoes. And my posts are always the same. Find a GOOD Doctor and be honest with him, Otherwise allow the diseases to run your life. I chose to accept and deal with the disease, Diet stay away from coffee or caffeinated beverages, Exercise, take a walk, Eat, your body needs fuel. Try yoga and deep breathing. Whatever and take it day by day, And with the cold weather coming be grateful to have a warm home, and lastly come to terms with whatever ails you and fight it. God Bless us all and remember those we have lost to the good fight! peace

S & T: Many thanks and Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. When I think of those who lost the good fight, I think of one of my best friends. AA/NA wasn't for me and now I have the research to back my gut feelings. But it seemed to work really well for my pal, Bob. We went to junior high and high school together. I always see him when visiting my parents. I did a work-up every 6-8 months, but told him any meds and to come from his Internist or shrink. Long-distance it's easy to accept old friends at their word, especially when staying clean and sober is what you want from them. My psychiatric training clearly took a holiday. About five years ago, one of my Mom's best friends came over for Xmas Eve Open House. After greetings, she asked, "Have you heard Billy D. was found dead with three or four of his kids at home. (I think the meds call that age group Toddlers and Pre-Kindergarten). I became an MD again in flash; not only an MD, but one Boarded in Forensic Psychiatry.

"What was the COD?" (Then I explained COD = Cause of Death). She told me drug and alcohol combined. This had happened a couple of weeks prior. Billy moved to upstate New York out of touch with old friends, Recovery comrades [I'm not knocking AA/NA, etc.,when they work] and family. I remembered going to his 6th graders school to explain ADD/ADHD and certifying that my specialty in Child and Adolescent makes me an authority on ADD/ADHD and that principal was going to "shut the f*** up" and intent me about the Hx, DDx, course of the illness, etc., and the kid was protected by the Americans With Disabilities Act. What he WASN'T going to do was take punitive action unless he wanted to see me not nearly so friendly as an Expert Witness in Family Court.

He said, "And YOU'RE a psychiatrist?"

"Sure am and a damned good one according to all reliable sources. You wanna see just HOW good, take one more step outside the boundaries of good administrative practice and you're in violation of Federal Law. The FBI enforces federal law and I've worked with them many times and — trust me — you DON'T want to meet them."

This kid was getting screwed because of his family situation. Kids are entitled to a clean slate. I remember how grateful Billy and his wife were.

I decided I needed to learn from this and I myself now do more extensive "family mental health evaluations" and so do my Residents.

"All it takes for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing" - Edmund Burke. People such as you and I take the evils of intractable pain, psychosis, abuse and addiction, and help others, NOT to "go softly into that good night." While I don't judge my patients, I do believe that Addiction, per se, is Evil, an evil that we can fight with the tools God gave us, what we learned in school and in the school of life. This is a fight to life and quality of life and, speaking of Evil, some of my alleged "colleagues" who have sold their prescription pads to the highest bidder, are as just as complicit as any "corner boy" dealer. Wanna know why I make complaints to the Office of Professional Conduct regarding "Dr. Feelgoods"? Because it's the right thing to do. Happy Thanksgiving...
