My Doc Will Not Refill My Xanax Im Feeling Sick (Page 7)
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I was prescribed Prozac & Xanax 10 years ago by my psychiatrist for depression & severe panic attacks. He started me on 1mg 3 times a day. Around Dec 2005 he increased my daily dose to 1 mg - 4 times a day. I have been a patient of his now for 10 years where I see him every 3 months. Through the years, there has been a few times were I had to call to reschedule my appointment and a couple of times he had to do the same. He would call in my meds for the amount I would need to get me through to my next appointment. This month I had an appointment for May 27th I called to reschedule due to transportation. I do not drive now and my ride canceled on me. so, I rescheduled my app. for June 17th I then requested my meds be called in until my appointment, a 3 week supply. She said she would call me back when it was called in later that day. Not hearing anything I called back the next day to find out what was going on. I was told my doctor feels uncomfortable due to liability reasons to re-fill my medication, until I see him again in June. I asked her what about the liability to take me off medication I have been taking for 10 years? She told me to go to my primary physician to get my meds. I told her my primary care doctor will not prescribe me those medications without my medical records from this office and I just signed a medical release form a few days ago at my first appointment with this new primary doctor, so she told me to go to an urgent care if my symptoms became to uncomfortable for me to deal with!! I had enough xanax to last me until today. I took my last xanax this morning and I am already starting to feel sick, my head feels cloudy, I feel like I'm getting the flu. My heart is racing, I'm feel really anxious & closed in. Has anyone out there gone off xanax cold turkey what more should I expect? I don't understand how a doctor can prescribe medication like this for 10 years and just make you stop so suddenly it doesn't seem fair. I have lost trust in my doctor now and I don't think I can continue to be his patient anymore. I am scared and I don't know who to turn too.

What do you think withdrawal is but a craving? Geez, stop trying so hard to make me wrong and move on.

I don't know what state you are in, but maybe you can research and find a good rehabilitation facility to try inpatient treatment. If you need help finding any inpatient, or outpatient rehabilitation facility let me know.

I don't understand some of the people on this board. They get angry if people share their experiences of recovery and doing things the right way. All anyone have to do is Goggle and they will see how many doctors have gotten their license suspended, revoked and some even got jail time for over prescribing. Most state are aware of the opioid epidemic and offer rehab help for those who wants it, regardless of you have insurance or not. An addict is usually the last person to admit they have an addiction. I know that a lot of people went on opioid for legitimate reasons and their doctors kept them on it and they end up getting addicted. Allegedly the DEA knows this. Doctors are learning this. It started with the pharmaceutical companies. Allegedly they never disclosed the high propensity these drugs have for addiction. If the doctor didn't know then the patient didn't know. People can complain till the second coming it will not change the fact "that opioid are meant to be given short term" for some doctors short term means no longer than two weeks. Some doctors are apprehensive and more diligent because they don't want to lose their medical license, practice or freedom. The people who are crying that doctors don't care needs to see things from a different perspective. I bet if they walk in and say "I am an addict and I need help to get clean" they would get it. I asked for help back in 2012 when one episode landed me in the hospital. At first I told them outpatient then I told them, I think I needed inpatient first. They sent me directly from the hospital to an inpatient rehabilitation facility. The facility also had N/A groups consists of people who were willing to come and share their stories of 10, 20, 30 years of addiction, what they lost and how they got clean. Those stories inspired me to get clean. But it seems like some people here don't want to hear those kind of stories. Only the ones where they can get a doctor to prescribe what they want. I don't think I have ever read a post asking if anyone know a good rehabilitation facility.

Re: Bruce Almighty (# 495) Expand Referenced Message

Thanks for the explanation regarding typing in capital letters. I am 55 Y/O and wear tri-focal glasses. With that said your anger towards me came through loud and clear. Buddy, I have traveled the road of addiction/dependence to opioid. I came out standing after inpatient rehab & then outpatient rehab. This was in 2012, I self-medicated and that was on me. I had a doctor that ordered whatever I needed at the time, but I never blamed her for my self- medicating. I would run out before my next visit and go through the process till my next appointment. I never missed an appointment and I always have U/A's. I have chronic issues which cause chronic pain. I thankful that I was able to get off the opioid and stay off. I research and used various alternatives methods to treat my pain. I am not ashamed of what I have been through. I try to inspire others. There is an opioid epidemic, that is an undisputed fact. Now, regarding the benzodiazepines. I do take Xanax and I don't self-medicate, I don't run out of it before time. I keep all appointments and I am transparent with my psych Dr and all my other doctors. Bruce Almighty, if you want to call me perfect so be it. If you are angry regarding my experience and journey so be it. For me, I don't see myself as perfect. I see myself as a person who have learned a hard lesson, a person who is focus on recovery and a person who has so far never relapsed and don't want to. BTW, strangely I have never had any issues with benzodiazepines. You have the right moniker Bruce Almighty and so do I because when I read your angry rhetoric. All I could say was " SAYWHAT, NOW". Hope you can read lower cases almighty Bruce.

Re: EDDY (# 506) Expand Referenced Message

That is true. Anne, needs to be careful with what she posts. If she is a RN as she claims she should know better. She should also know that it doesn't matter if she thinks what she posts is within her realm. What matters is if the State Board of Nursing thinks she is dispensing information and advice that people might listen to is definitely outside her scope of practice. Regular Nurses do not give medical diagnosis. Nurse Practitioners working with a M.D does after a face to face assessment. BTW, just because Anne writes that she is a nurse doesn't make it true. It could be that it has been her dream to become a nurse, but never did. So, on this board she can be the nurse she wish she was.

Re: Maya69 (# 509) Expand Referenced Message

You are right. The brain most definitely governs the body. Following Anne's philosophy, if a person's brain is telling them something it can manifest in physical symptoms. As a matter of fact, I believe that's what happens during panic attacks. When I first developed it I honestly thought I was having a heart attack or a stroke. The more my brain focused on what was happening and my thought process zeroed in on heart attack & stroke the more it exacerbated my physical symptoms. I had called 911 that's how terrifying my first episode was and I kept screaming I'm dying, I'm dying and the 911operator heard the fright in my voice and stayed on the phone with me. The brain controls the body and every research I did regarding panic attacks say if you are having one, try to focus on the fact that you will not die, don't fight it, let your body go with it. Also, if you are with someone who is having it, focus on holding their hands and reassure them that they are safe, and it will pass. In other words, get their minds off what is happening. Panic attacks were extremely frightening for me and I would never wish it on my worst enemy. But I think it's one of those things some people can't understand if they never experienced it. Finally, another point that helps validate that the mind definitely controls the physical symptoms of the body, is whenever they do clinical trials using placebos.

Re: Anne (# 514) Expand Referenced Message

Just because someone takes xanax does not mean they abuse it. I take it for panic disorder. Most people that take it for this reason do not abuse it. I have never taken more than 3 mg a day and never had to increase my dose beyond that. Additionally i've never ran out of my prescriptions early.

Tapering isn't really that difficult and if you do some research you'll find that the slower the taper the less likely a person is to have protracted withdrawal. Quitting cold turkey is definitely dangerous and potentially life threatening. Tapering too fast, while perhaps not as dangerous, CAN lead to protracted withdrawal syndrome!

Re: Anne (# 511) Expand Referenced Message

The only person talking about something they don't understand or "know" is you. Nobody here is talking about "cravings". They're talking about physical withdrawal symptoms that can last indefinitely. It's called protracted withdrawal. Perhaps if you'd take a few minutes and actually read about it you may be able to comprehend the concept.

Well I'll listen to you even if no one else will. I don't feel like your wasting my time cause I know sometimes we need someone to hear our concerns and there's nothing wrong with expressing your feelings. I myself have seen enough and experienced enough to know how drs can be, as well as other individuals can be sometimes and its hard to find a true individual who may really care about you and your well being. Just saying im here if you need to talk about issues you may experiencing.

Re: Anne (# 507) Expand Referenced Message

I've read your posts and I haven't seen anything about a problem you're having regarding the original post about panic attacks and benzo w/d, so, why are you commenting? Do you enjoy just trying to put people down that have a problem or concern with their medicine or lack of? I don't get people like you, you're just plain mean, and if you really are a nurse, I feel sorry for patients that come in with a drug related problem, as you must be a real peach to them.

Yes, Along with the symptoms you're describing I occasionally take a pill and it dissolves so fast and tastes like sugar. Does that happen to you?

Re: Ruth (# 518) Expand Referenced Message

I don’t think I was being rude. This topic is concerning panic attacks, anxiety, PTSD ETC. So why is the person saying something that we all already know. The OP is asking for help with his/her panic. IMO the person who made the post explaining what our disorders is the one being rude and wasting everyone’s time

Has anyone had a problem with generic lorazepam made by Actavis? It seems two not last very long and makes me feel like I am going through withdrawals after couple of hours.

Re: Patrice (# 517) Expand Referenced Message

no need to be rude to people on here and make them feel dumb or belittled like there issues don"t matter maybe some people don"t know what certain things are and maybe this person just felt like explaining there experience with a certain medicine a lot of us on here are seeking and giving advice from experience so all the arguing and bikering is ridiculous especially when these are real individual seeking help just saying let grow up

Re: fioricetultram (# 24) Expand Referenced Message

I don’t understand what your point is?? I’m pretty sure that we all know what a panic attack is. If we are taking Benzos that means we have panic attacks, PTSD, anxiety, And other disorders that Benzos are prescribed for.. So I’m asking, again.. What is your point?

It makes me annoyed that a person with nothing to contribute to a medical discussion gets on here and wants to play nurse. Like I said, seek life elsewhere

Re: FREEDOM (# 476) Expand Referenced Message

I knew you had been here Freedom from your first post. I too used to chase the high. Never one to admit it to my dr...I went every mo. Thru 3 days of withdrawal. Both parents were alcoholics, so I knew I would do this. Then illness high....8 bad ones. But at my age now, I no longer search for a high...Definitely don't drink on my meds. I repeat in youth we learn, in old age we understand. I do understand and I know freedom knows of what he speaks. He needs to be understood. Try a pain spec. But be prepared to give a U/A every 6 months. My doc does not care about marijuana. He wants to know I am still taking my miniscule methadone. I am -he's happy.

If you can taper yourself off the medication then you really are a strong person. Most people can't do it. Stopping it cold turkey can be dangerous. Wish you luck.

Never been kicked off and not going to leave. If you don't like what I post you don't have to read it. I'm not even going to justify the rest. Believe what you want but if I'm that dumb what does that make you!

You're just a nurse, just a nurse. If you knew half of what you think you know, you might just be an Intern that's just plain dumb. Take a break and go away, but I'm sure you get booted out of these forums often.. Geez, stick with nursing and leave the insights to the real doctors
