My Doc Will Not Refill My Xanax Im Feeling Sick (Page 7)

I was prescribed Prozac & Xanax 10 years ago by my psychiatrist for depression & severe panic attacks. He started me on 1mg 3 times a day. Around Dec 2005 he increased my daily dose to 1 mg - 4 times a day. I have been a patient of his now for 10 years where I see him every 3 months. Through the years, there has been a few times were I had to call to reschedule my appointment and a couple of times he had to do the same. He would call in my meds for the amount I would need to get me through to my next appointment. This month I had an appointment for May 27th I called to reschedule due to transportation. I do not drive now and my ride canceled on me. so, I rescheduled my app. for June 17th I then requested my meds be called in until my appointment, a 3 week supply. She said she would call me back when it was called in later that day. Not hearing anything I called back the next day to find out what was going on. I was told my doctor feels uncomfortable due to liability reasons to re-fill my medication, until I see him again in June. I asked her what about the liability to take me off medication I have been taking for 10 years? She told me to go to my primary physician to get my meds. I told her my primary care doctor will not prescribe me those medications without my medical records from this office and I just signed a medical release form a few days ago at my first appointment with this new primary doctor, so she told me to go to an urgent care if my symptoms became to uncomfortable for me to deal with!! I had enough xanax to last me until today. I took my last xanax this morning and I am already starting to feel sick, my head feels cloudy, I feel like I'm getting the flu. My heart is racing, I'm feel really anxious & closed in. Has anyone out there gone off xanax cold turkey what more should I expect? I don't understand how a doctor can prescribe medication like this for 10 years and just make you stop so suddenly it doesn't seem fair. I have lost trust in my doctor now and I don't think I can continue to be his patient anymore. I am scared and I don't know who to turn too.

I can tell you that seizures are you in your future. I know first hand. Horrible withdrawals.

I took Benadryl when I had that seizure at Fred Meyer I believe they make it worse I would not take them
if you read about them Nyquil, and Benadryl, can make withdrawals worse.

I am kind of going through the same thing I've been on lexapro 20mg and was going to increase it to 30 mgs before she upped my zanax 1mg 4 times daily which i have been on for about 15yrs i have severe ptsd/depression/and anxiety my car broke down a little over 6 months ago and will take 2-3 more months to save and fix it i was with the same councelling group for a very long time but its impossible to get there expecially when i went 1-2 times a week so i found a primary doctor pretty close to me and agreed to give me all my psych meds until i could get another mental heath doc ii should of listened to the big red flag popped up long story short someone called her and said i was addicted to meth (never touched or even saw that drug i took a UA and the nurse calls me in all i saw was a bunch of colors and the one ment meth was in my system i was furious i knew it was a lie i demanded for my urine was analyzed by a well known lab in the mean time she refused me my zanax and being on such high does i got sicker then any flu w lots of ailments w a possibility i can seizure and die my doc said they would have results in 3-5 days but usually 2-3days went to er many times but they could only give at most 5 pills well my urine took 3weeks to come back totally clean def no meth now here we go again i lost or someone took almost all my pills i freaked iut balling my eyes out called my primary were the script was written and tryed to hold it together and explained my problem she said if i can't keep track of my meds i shouldn't get them and will not give me anything if she does untill my next appointment on 5/6 I've been out for one day now never can fall asleep w out them i don't understand why she couldn't do anything for a month i asked what to do i couldn't believe whT they said...go to rehab I'm not abusing my meds never did more then a few hits of pot awhile ago i get UA's everytime i go in once a month I'm not a damn drug addict so why am i being treated lik is there anything i can/should do because its wrong i depend on my meds so i feel normal and calm someone please help

That is so ignorant whoever posted that message about how shell be fine and defending the doctor. theres only two drugs you can die from due to withdrawals. benzos and alcohol. the fact that your doctor would put you in that type of danger is discussing and cruel. i actually know some one who died from xanax withdrawl because stupid people told them they would be fine soon enough. if i were you, i would go to the hospital and you will need to be treated asap.

You are using your head. I take ativan, and after 3 days of using it I wanted to take more then was prescribed. I also noticed that I was feeling more depressed. Now I will only take one on occasion and NEVER more than 2 days in a row.

My worst problem was not any type of dts (shakes flu like symptoms and so on) my problem was after stopping taking them I was unable to sleep. And irritability.

Any Doctor that refuses to refill a prescription for xanax for a patient who has taken the drug for several years should lose his/her license to practice medicine. Also, not sure if you are aware but in small doses (.5) once a day, xanax helps people and it is much better than taking dangerous prozac type drugs.

Your comment that the Doctor would not presribe xanax to someone showing "addictive" behavior is stupid....Once you start taking it you BECOME ADDICTED to it That IS the problem!
ALL these Doctors MAKING people get off Xanx AFTER they let them get addicted to the drug should ALL BE SUED and LOSE their jobs.
I was put on xanax 10 years ago 1mg SIX times and day and told to "play around w/them" meaning use them when you need 'em...It stabilized my life and Now they are jeapordizing my life by deciding not to prescribe xanax..BULLCRAP.
Word to ALL: DO NOT TAKE ANY MEDS the Doctors can just Rip away from you because they feel like it...This is NOT beneficial to your personal sanity or health. Check ALL meds BEFORE taking.

Dawn, someone else wrote almost the same thing you did a while back,. but this is a very very dangerous drug, if you are feeling sick go to the hospital, they may help you because coming off of benzo's without tapering off will cause a grand mall seizure, I have had it happen to me, or call your therapists office back and remind them that he should give you enough so you don't have a seizure. they don't care if they cancel, they are the doctor. but when you cancel then they wonder if you can get to the pharmacy to pick them up, you should be able to come in, that's just how cruddy they are. but really call him back and tell the staff you don't want to have a grand mall seizure, sometimes they forget about that, good luck if he does nothing get to a hospital ASAP !!!

I have come off these cold turkey and I was taking a lot when I say a lot I'm talking 15 a day you will be over it in about a week maybe 2. The worst part is the cold sweats and light headiness that's the worst hang in you can do it. I'm doing it myself right now cause I'm going to loose my husband if I don't stop taking them and they are not worth loosing him. Just take it easy and you will get through it.

I had asked my doctor for the very first time to send my prescription card out for my adhd meds which is a schedule 2 control substance Adderall I've been on it sense u was 16 anyhow I never received my scripts never came in the mail, anyhow they blew me off and said "sorry we sent u 2 months worth in the mail" talk about liability how can they possibly do that?!? My mom then called them up and told them she is scared for my life because this medicine works in mysterious ways I've never been with out and always taken them faithfully. Any opinions???

I'm in situation where my long time pcp won't fill emergency alprazolam script , because I haven't been into his office for 6months , I'm never sick so I don'tgo in , I'm currently out of state tending to family matters and have run out of my meds . This was unforeseen or I could have planned Dr. Appt. previous to trip - but I didn't now I'm stuck , called office and they said they would call me back -- they didn't -- called Dr-- on a Sat! -- he said No to my request of emergency refill to fill gap until I got home (and have appt already set up )
I called an urgent care center explained my dilemma / they said they didn't do that there. ??? Urgent care ?? What!!

Was told to get an appt with a local dr to become NEW patient..! Why? I am going home in 3 weeks just needed refill until then . Bty I was due for refill as I try to only take as needed so I stretch pills out to last as long as I can. Today stopped at pharmacy asked how much trouble would it be to get presc refill / they said no problem took my info and called in to hometown pharmacy for a 1x transfer / only to find out nothing waiting as refill for me / so they couldn't fill yet / would wait until they heard from Dr. And he isn't calling them ! So I'm stuck in cold turkey mode like it or not !! Thank you ! Dr.Welly ! for more stress added right now in my life!

If something happens by accident to me over this , u can explain it to my kids - ok ? !! I'm going to fight my withdrawals and hope people learn that meds are to be used NOT ABUSED AND MAYBE LAWS AND RULES WOULDNT BE SO RESTRICTED. I'm a 63 year old female and know my body and nerve system .. I know what is right and wrong! Peace to u other folks battling too

NO. You are WRONG. It varies from state to state. For Schedule IV medication, usually the maximum amount of refills is 5 or a 6 month supply. She sees her doctor every 3 months so calling and rescheduling for 2 weeks later is perfectly normal. The
Doctor is negligent. Have you ever taken a benzo treatment long term?? You CANNOT stop 4mg alprazolam/day cold. You run a very high risk of a seizure from withdrawal past 1.5mg daily. Also, Alprazolam does not accumulate so it is normal for patients to experience inter-dose withdrawal. Some patients eliminate alprazolam every 6 hours (half life 6-15). This means withdrawal can set in after 6 hours or less. It's why it's taken 3-4
Times daily. Your advice is negligent. I advise this OP go to ER and tell them what your doctor did. (Bring your prescription bottle)

There are a plethora of health risks that can happen by withdrawaling cold turkey off of xanax. Seizures, dehydration (worst case scenario death from this), heart attack or stroke (assuming the patient on this medication really has anxiety and as well as a heart condition) etc. Doctors have far too much control these days and in a perfect world this would be met with litigation, failure to treat, and other liability reckless endangerment laws should something happen to said patient. Keep in mind everyones body is different and some people will experience withdrawals earlier than others. Not all patients are drug addicts and doctor shoppers so these kinds of post telling the OP to suck it up aren't contributing any useful information. They needed to go to the ER room for assistance explaining the situation and hospitals HAVE to treat you or they can be sued. They can't turn you away.

I was taking Xanax and clonapin both for years but got off about 2 years ago. However, anxiety has returned with a vengeance :(
I Bite my nails to the point of infection it's terrible and the benzos are the only thing that ever helped. I really don't want to go back on them because I don't think I will ever be able to get off of them again remembering what I went through. You are so awesome to stay with your son through the withdrawal! They didn't give you something at the hospital!?? You could have had a seizure. I did when I went through the withdrawal....
Can you tell me what the herbal medicines are that help you?
I would be so relieved to find anything that helped besides the benzos...

Yeah, I am in the same position. These doctors are all freaked out by the government regulating and monitoring them along with liability paranoia. It is totally not ok with these doctors to do to us that truly suffer from anxiety and xanax helps emmensely. Try to take antihistamines to calm you down. This is what I have had to resort to. I have been left "cold turkey" by my doctors' office that I have been with for over 15 years. Yeah they really suck bad.
