My Doc Will Not Refill My Xanax Im Feeling Sick
(Newest replies first)

I was prescribed Prozac & Xanax 10 years ago by my psychiatrist for depression & severe panic attacks. He started me on 1mg 3 times a day. Around Dec 2005 he increased my daily dose to 1 mg - 4 times a day. I have been a patient of his now for 10 years where I see him every 3 months. Through the years, there has been a few times were I had to call to reschedule my appointment and a couple of times he had to do the same. He would call in my meds for the amount I would need to get me through to my next appointment. This month I had an appointment for May 27th I called to reschedule due to transportation. I do not drive now and my ride canceled on me. so, I rescheduled my app. for June 17th I then requested my meds be called in until my appointment, a 3 week supply. She said she would call me back when it was called in later that day. Not hearing anything I called back the next day to find out what was going on. I was told my doctor feels uncomfortable due to liability reasons to re-fill my medication, until I see him again in June. I asked her what about the liability to take me off medication I have been taking for 10 years? She told me to go to my primary physician to get my meds. I told her my primary care doctor will not prescribe me those medications without my medical records from this office and I just signed a medical release form a few days ago at my first appointment with this new primary doctor, so she told me to go to an urgent care if my symptoms became to uncomfortable for me to deal with!! I had enough xanax to last me until today. I took my last xanax this morning and I am already starting to feel sick, my head feels cloudy, I feel like I'm getting the flu. My heart is racing, I'm feel really anxious & closed in. Has anyone out there gone off xanax cold turkey what more should I expect? I don't understand how a doctor can prescribe medication like this for 10 years and just make you stop so suddenly it doesn't seem fair. I have lost trust in my doctor now and I don't think I can continue to be his patient anymore. I am scared and I don't know who to turn too.
these same thing happen to me i am on my xanax from last 4 year but after 1st year my dr didn't prescribe me the xanax sometime he did sometimes he ask for more money and my situation goes down so after that i decided to take from online and now i am using my xanax and feeling very well
Talk to a new doctor

It can kill u if it's something ur body never has went through I suffer from extreme anxiety hypertension. I have to see someone to get them myself I don't know any doctor that prescribe them 3 months ahead of time though
Re: Cindy (# 645)
Marlee was only taking .5 twice a day for 3 or 4 months. That is a relatively small amount over a small period of time. Therefore Verwon's reply was cautious but prudent
Re: Verwon (# 5)
Verwon, sorry to disagree with your statement about going off xanax after youve been on high doses for years as a little uncomfortable. Annd especially your statement that " because you havent abused xanax it wont be that bad". What? You really dont know what your talking about. You need to research the medical doctors withdrawal information. It can be dangerous to go off cold turkey of xanax. High doses daily your body becomes accustomed to, even if your taking it for a diagnosis thats justified anytime you just stop it can be very difficult, cause seizures that are dangerous, etc.
Re: Linda (# 643)
Verwon was trying to show some compassion, while telling it like it is. I see nothing wrong with that reply
Re: Verwon (# 3)
What???? She's showing addictive behaviors bc Xanax is an ADDICTIVE MEDICATION!! The Drs already know that. It's no secret. I really don't get your point at all.
Re: Kris (# 640)
Many Incredible things, 2 in particular reading emails off the ceiling, and my first night at the Hospital hearing the C/T Scanner running all night with full conversations. The C/T scanner was in a different building and was not used that night. Oh, and non-stop church bells. I could have written a book during these 2 weeks, it was wild!
Re: Kris (# 640)
Interventional pain..ha! They don’t care. It might work if you stubbed your toe!
Re: EDDY (# 634)
Eddy, could you please tell me about your wild hallucinations? I’m just curious.
I too had hallucinations, they were family members talking to me in my room and I was answering them.
Someone heard me talking and came in my room and say “hey! Who are you talking to?” I told them, and I was told that nobody was in my room. I looked around and there was no one there! It seemed like I was having a conversation with my family members for hours.
Is this anything like anybody else’s hallucinations? Just curious. If you don’t mind sharing it would help me.
Thank you. Please stay well. There ARE doctors who really DO CARE out there. May God Bless you all.
Re: Kris (# 638)
Great advice Chris! I wound up almost dying from a CT withdraw, and was able to secure the services of the Doctor treating me in the Hospital during my one-week stay in 2010. Billy (post 22) wrote here in 2012 there is a special law that the Doctor must continue treating you with Xanax. He was very wrong, millions have lost access to Xanax. I find it easier getting Xanax from my Doctor than I do for eye drops. I asked if I could try those new drops that help you see up close, they sound fascinating. He said no
Re: The Contessa (# 21)
Please don’t even try to go off Xanax cold turkey. You have to find help immediately. When my doctor did this to me I had to go to the emergency room every 2 days. They were kind and would help me. When I wasn’t in the hospital , I looked constantly, non stop for a physician to help me. I recommend that you do the same. I called every psychiatrist, pain doctor and would go to a lot of walk in clinics.
I finally found help with a family doctor.. He could see my suffering and helped me that first day that I seen him. There is help out there, but it’s not going to come to your door. You probably can’t drive without your meds, so get a friend to drive you. And if you need help before you can find a new doctor, then make your first stop the emergency room! Please, take it from someone who nearly died from this. Doctors should know to NEVER do this to anyone. I hope you’ve found help and are feeling well again.
Re: Suzy (# 636)
It's a plague, a poison. Heck I was diagnosed as Walking Critical 12 years ago when II walked into the local ER after a C/T withdrawal, it changed my life. Stayed a week, this will NEVER happen again to me, not sure how though? Yes I have plenty of extras and gained new knowledge how benzos can drop you where you stand. Wild hallucinations, terrible food!
Re: lisa1947 (# 1)
I was in the hospital less than a week ago close to death! Because my doctor dropped me as his patient because I lost my Xanax. And I came close to dying, literally.. because of one mistake that I made. I did contact a malpractice lawyer who says I have a case. He’s taking my case and he said he wouldn’t take it if he thought for one minute that he couldn’t win! Good! I hope my ex doctor needs something for his anxiety when he no longer is a “medical pain doctor” and has no longer has a medical business!
Re: EDDY (# 631)
Yes, it definitely can KILL YOU!!! Don’t ever get off of Xanax once you’ve been taking it. I’ve been in the hospital every 2 days since my doctor turned his back on me. I desperately need a doctor that will prescribe Xanax in Anchorage Alaska. If anybody knows a doctor that isn’t scared of writing for Xanax, please let me know the name of this life saving doctor! I was in the er 3 days ago with tubes and a IV and monitors hooked up all over me. The whole room was filled up with doctors, nurses and bells and whistles going off! I was scared to death, they wouldn’t tell me what was going on. They told me they “were just checking to see if I had a heart attack” Yeh, no big deal, right? Wrong! My husband looked so scared. I couldn’t breathe, which brought my blood pressure way down. They asked me if my tummy hurt.. he’ll yeh it hurt! They told me I looked pale and gray.. I thought I was going to die that day! My diagnosis… an anxiety attack! My doctor quit prescribing it for me. It’s ridiculous. I actually had a doctor crying to me begging me to PROMISE HIM not to go off Xanax, yet “that wasn’t his field, so he couldn’t help me”! WHAT?!? How can I promise him that if all these punk doctors are too afraid to help a person live by giving me the medication I need?! I’m still so sick! Can anyone help me find a doctor who cares and is willing to help me? The doctor who just walked away from me is a KILLER… NOT A DOCTOR! No wonder people turn to heroin!
Re: Patricia (# 633)
"Xanax is a benzodiazapene and abrupt withdrawal is a life threatening illness."
Well a potential life-threatening experience for sure. When the OP wrote this post, I had just gotten out of the E.R. for a Xanax withdrawal. Could have written a book, the hallucinations were wild. The E.R. doctor told me I was in critical condition,
Xanax is a benzodiazapene and abrupt withdrawal is a life threatening illness.
Find a doctor who will prescribe it and taper you down.
Or take one pill and glue it to a piece of cardboard and get a cloth measuring tape
Each time you take a pill get a razor blade after you measure a very small amount....and blow it away it might take six months to a year but it will work....it's just common sense and you won't panic because you will be in control and go up and down in your measuring
Re: Verwon (# 3)
A schedule IV medication can be phoned in. Schedule ll can not.
Re: Suzy (# 630)
I remember that post from 12 years ago, frightening to say the least. Of course that was the same year I too decided to try to stop this poison and found myself in a Hospital for a week. I almost died
Re: Finally Off After 7 Yrs (# 8)
Oh that sounds absolutely horrible! I can’t imagine what that must’ve been like. I’m so sorry you went through that.
