My Doc Will Not Refill My Xanax Im Feeling Sick (Page 32) (Top voted first)

Updated

I was prescribed Prozac & Xanax 10 years ago by my psychiatrist for depression & severe panic attacks. He started me on 1mg 3 times a day. Around Dec 2005 he increased my daily dose to 1 mg - 4 times a day. I have been a patient of his now for 10 years where I see him every 3 months. Through the years, there has been a few times were I had to call to reschedule my appointment and a couple of times he had to do the same. He would call in my meds for the amount I would need to get me through to my next appointment. This month I had an appointment for May 27th I called to reschedule due to transportation. I do not drive now and my ride canceled on me. so, I rescheduled my app. for June 17th I then requested my meds be called in until my appointment, a 3 week supply. She said she would call me back when it was called in later that day. Not hearing anything I called back the next day to find out what was going on. I was told my doctor feels uncomfortable due to liability reasons to re-fill my medication, until I see him again in June. I asked her what about the liability to take me off medication I have been taking for 10 years? She told me to go to my primary physician to get my meds. I told her my primary care doctor will not prescribe me those medications without my medical records from this office and I just signed a medical release form a few days ago at my first appointment with this new primary doctor, so she told me to go to an urgent care if my symptoms became to uncomfortable for me to deal with!! I had enough xanax to last me until today. I took my last xanax this morning and I am already starting to feel sick, my head feels cloudy, I feel like I'm getting the flu. My heart is racing, I'm feel really anxious & closed in. Has anyone out there gone off xanax cold turkey what more should I expect? I don't understand how a doctor can prescribe medication like this for 10 years and just make you stop so suddenly it doesn't seem fair. I have lost trust in my doctor now and I don't think I can continue to be his patient anymore. I am scared and I don't know who to turn too.

I don't understand some of the people on this board. They get angry if people share their experiences of recovery and doing things the right way. All anyone have to do is Goggle and they will see how many doctors have gotten their license suspended, revoked and some even got jail time for over prescribing. Most state are aware of the opioid epidemic and offer rehab help for those who wants it, regardless of you have insurance or not. An addict is usually the last person to admit they have an addiction. I know that a lot of people went on opioid for legitimate reasons and their doctors kept them on it and they end up getting addicted. Allegedly the DEA knows this. Doctors are learning this. It started with the pharmaceutical companies. Allegedly they never disclosed the high propensity these drugs have for addiction. If the doctor didn't know then the patient didn't know. People can complain till the second coming it will not change the fact "that opioid are meant to be given short term" for some doctors short term means no longer than two weeks. Some doctors are apprehensive and more diligent because they don't want to lose their medical license, practice or freedom. The people who are crying that doctors don't care needs to see things from a different perspective. I bet if they walk in and say "I am an addict and I need help to get clean" they would get it. I asked for help back in 2012 when one episode landed me in the hospital. At first I told them outpatient then I told them, I think I needed inpatient first. They sent me directly from the hospital to an inpatient rehabilitation facility. The facility also had N/A groups consists of people who were willing to come and share their stories of 10, 20, 30 years of addiction, what they lost and how they got clean. Those stories inspired me to get clean. But it seems like some people here don't want to hear those kind of stories. Only the ones where they can get a doctor to prescribe what they want. I don't think I have ever read a post asking if anyone know a good rehabilitation facility.

Yes!!!! You can NOT just quit cold turkey- I did and I had the WORST 2 weeks ever w/extreme anxiety like I’ve never experienced. NO ONE understood what I was going through and couldn’t care less! Each withdrawal brim benzos is different. Maybe you’ll get lucky. Of course you can always just order online! You can get ANYTHING u want on the web!

I am a professional licensed RN with 31 years of experience working in the ER, Neuro-surgical floor, and Telemetry unit of the hospital. I've also worked for a pediatrician. I don't give a darn whether you believe it or not. Your opinion is inconsequential. I don't tell anyone to read my posts. Don't like it don't read it. Sometimes the people that protest the loudest know the least and have the biggest problems.

They can give pain meds, just not opioids, or other narcotics. This is due to Trump's war on opioid abuse. Unfortunately, all higher classed, as I, II, III IV, have been targeted as inappropriate for the diagnosis they were created to treat. Yes, all medications in the sedative, and opioid groups are being targeted, but it's disturbing that substitute meds, are used off-label, meaning they MIGHT have a positive effect on the complaint, though not intended for that specific use. Unfortunately, the most effective medications can build a tolerance, however, anitdepressants, and anticonvulsants are also medications that can not be stopped abruptly. I find it hard to reconcile the logic of targeting medications that allow people to function in their lives a little better, so the government is robbing people, in essence, of life quality.

You need to watch what you say and be fully informed before you start a tangent. Xanax can cause tachycardia (fast heart rate), palpitations, edema (retention of fluids), swelling in hands and feet and jaundice. So they can have an effect on people with heart failure or DVT's. The blood flow to the kidneys is decreased so there can be more fluid in the body which can directly affect both conditions. People may decide to believe what you're saying and disregard real medical information. Instead of jumping on anyone that says something you Don't like take the time to research it to see if there's any truth to it.

Ask your pharmacist for a copy of the brochure for Xanax. Maybe that will be legit enough for you. That has all the side effects. One of the contraindictions is for people with hepatic disease. Just because you want to believe it doesn't carry these side effects doesn't make it so. All medications carry the risk of side effects. It's weighing the risk to the benefit.

Really. You really can’t find a damn bus to get there? Excuses. You messed up and this is the outcome. You better hope once you do get there, that you get anything anymore.

Xanax is a benzodiazapene and abrupt withdrawal is a life threatening illness.

Find a doctor who will prescribe it and taper you down.

Or take one pill and glue it to a piece of cardboard and get a cloth measuring tape
Each time you take a pill get a razor blade after you measure a very small amount....and blow it away it might take six months to a year but it will work....it's just common sense and you won't panic because you will be in control and go up and down in your measuring

Panic attacks are periods of intense fear or apprehension that are of sudden onset and of relatively brief duration.

People should 'get strong'! Don't go to a doctor or get prescriptions for atleast a month or two. The gov. will have to take notice along with the docs and pharms.-people are sick of being abused by the way they treat us. Before long this sh** will have to stop. Go after greedy docs and addicts on meth. but leave decent people alone and their private relationships with their docs!!! This place is worse than europe!

I have to reference a later comment. It is the pts responsibility to attend regular appointments so that treatment plans are not interrupted. My statement had to do with scare tactics. 4 mg per day is not an extremely high dose, so waiting a brief period, or getting a temporary prezcription through urgent care are viable solutions. If you read back to my original post, the OP stated that having jUST taken the last dose was making her feel sick. This implies pgychologicl dependence, not need.

Go to the emergency room and explain the situation to them and let them know you will follow up with someone as soon as possible but right now u need to GO! I'm sorry there is no other option or depending on who u know that may take meds as u then u may have to ask a friend or find a dealer. Seriously I'm sorry but that is what happens and u can take klonopin, valium, or ativan as well (unless u have any known issues with those meds) as a substitute so if u know a close friend or someone u can trust to ask for one from I would do so. I was in rehab and had a major anxiety attack because they stopped my meds cold turkey and I had to have ambulance called. You can die from stopping benzodiazepines cold turkey

Vinny: Compared with most meds, alprazolam is relatively innocuous, and protects the heart as well. We don't hear of cancer or death related to this medication, however the dependence factor is bad enough. You bring up a good point about meds in general. It is good to take as few meds as possible, because some do alter the cells at the molecular level.

It is harder to get off of then heroin. I would report her to your local health department. You could have a seizure and die.

How long were you on it? You need to be in a medical facility and your physician needs to get a HEALTH DEPT complaint against him. This is reckless behavior. I am in the same boat except, I was switched to Klonopin. I was turned away from 4 behavioral health clinics who said, "we do not want the liability of what another doctor did to you."
I found an APRN who switched me to Klonopin which is still a benzo. That's is as far as it went. My primary care doctor prescribes it now like it's Tylenol.

Re: FREEDOM (# 476) Expand Referenced Message

I agree with you but you're leaving out some of the story. Jack gets his meds from Bob. Bob gets his meds from the doctor (or has a family member get them or both) or a higher up dealer and instead of taking them he sells them. See, you can make a lot of money selling them. This is the main reason they're coming down so hard. They want to stop the diversion from patient to street. It's a shame that the many are paying for the few.

Re: EDDY (# 506) Expand Referenced Message

And you would know this how???? Just because you don't like the answer doesn't make it so and its not beyond my scope of practice. Six months of continued withdrawal is too long. Ask a doctor!

Well I'll listen to you even if no one else will. I don't feel like your wasting my time cause I know sometimes we need someone to hear our concerns and there's nothing wrong with expressing your feelings. I myself have seen enough and experienced enough to know how drs can be, as well as other individuals can be sometimes and its hard to find a true individual who may really care about you and your well being. Just saying im here if you need to talk about issues you may experiencing.
