Metronidazole Lasting Side Effects (Page 19)

Updated

I have been taking this medication for 7 days and off of it since a week and still have severe side effects, abdominal cramps, severe headaches, dizziness, unsteadiness... How long is it expected to last? It was prescribed with Ciprofloxacin to me and I take Entrophen on a regular basis...

I'm sorry to hear that chris! Definitely sounds similar to what I'm going through. A few things you can try to heal your gut- bone broth, dgl licorice, l - glutamine (powder or in capsules), a variety of steamed vegetables, chicken, fish, beef, glycine (aino acid that's also usually in dgl supplements), beef gelatin (you can find it at health food stores, it's powder), probiotics. I am struggling with the probiotics right now, they make my brain fog worse, so be careful with those if you aren't already taking them. If you are and aren't struggling with em, take bunches, and try to take a variety of strains. Also fermented vegetables are great for beneficial gut bugs. You can make them yourself, or go to a health food store like whol foods or the local Co op. Look for sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir, kvass, miso soup. The gut is so totally linked to the anxiety. Heal it and some of these problems will go away. Glutamine and dgl are helping me a lot. Be careful with the antibiotics, they will keep killing beneficial gut bacteria. It isn't too late, you can heal it. If these don't help, look up specific carbohydrate diet, gaps diet, fodmaps foods, fast track digestion diet, autoimmune paleo diet. These look like they have helped heal a number of people with similar issues. Consider visiting a naturopathic dr. Good luck! I've been off the flagyl since March 20 or so. I know how hard it is.

Yes I took it for 1 day. 2 a day. And day 2 I already felt the side effects of it. Bad bad headaches and this is day three (2 days off of it) and I feel so bad. My head hurts I get sharp pains in my head. My beck right in the back of the head where it and the spin meets hurts so bad. And not real good for anxiety.

I took flagyl 3 months ago for 7 days and I am not done with the neurological side effects. I was seen by a neurologist and I am on medication to ease the headaches.

I took flagyl for three weeks, 250mgs. four times a day for an intestinal infection after abdominal surgery. As I posted last year, the symptoms were unbearable. Irritability, panic attacks, depression and a feeling of loosing my mind. Got shock sensations all over my body a few months after stopping the flagyl. They lasted about six weeks. I will be off the medication one year this June 30. A few months ago got very anxious, have had a few panic attacks, get depressed and now I have a pinched nerve in my neck and have pins and needles in my arm and two of my fingers. Don't know if this is due to the flagyl but I have read that many people get the pins and needles experience from it. However, this just started about six weeks ago. I pray all this eventually stops. I did have a lot of this horrible stuff. Hope this helps someone.

It happened to me and this is called neuropathy. I am on medication for that issue and I am sure that flagyl causes the problem.

Hi,
I took three days of metronidazole and the only other medication I have been on for years is effexor xr. After the first day had terrible mood swings by the third I had terrible vertigo depersonization nausea loss of appetite tingling one side of my face and stiff neck, weakness in my legs and arms. It has been a month and a half and those symptoms went away and now are back. I read on these sights that this medication could cause serotonin syndrome with anti depressants. The worst part is the off balance and feeling out of it like disassociated. I am trying to figure out if the metronidazole through me into withdrawal of my effexor or is this just the metronidazole. No doctors seem to know anything. Did anyone have any luck with a specific type of doctor ? Or had any tests done? Has anyone had the side effects mostly go away then reoccur? I have been fine all these years til I took this medicine.

Hi,Did you fully recover from the metronidazole? Where was the dr or nutritionist you went to? Thanks Melissa

Melissa, sounds like the metronidazole to me. And yeah, I've read that a number of people have gotten better. There are more than a few in this thread with your symptoms that eventually got better. I had the depersonalization/brain fog plus tingling in my head, face, arms and legs really bad for the first month or so after stopping metronidazole. Those have improved a lot. They still come and go, but are not nearly as bad now. I've been off it for a little over two months. My biggest problems now are digestion issues and fatigue. But I can tell I am improving, slowly.

I've read a few replies from neurologists regarding neuropathy/brain damage caused by flagyl. It would be incredibly rare for a short course of metronidazole to cause permanent damage. Almost all is reversible. One neurologist even gave a time frame. He said average time for recovery is around five weeks or so, with others taking a bit longer (3-6) months. A few (and from my understanding this is more rare) take a year or longer. I think it depends on preexisting conditions, nutrition, supplementation, etc. You would probably benefit from b vitamins and magnesium.

Oh, also had the dizziness and off balance stuff too, but not as bad as yours. That lasted for three weeks or so for me. Haven't had any dizziness since.

Thank you for the reassurance! I still have many neurological side effects including dizziness and vision issues. I completed the Flagyl since march.! I am taking a medication to ease the side effects and I'll see with time if I improve or not.

Hi, flatly is dumb, thanks soo much for your reply. I have been in living hell last couple months and it helps to get confirmation that I was def drugged by this antibiotic. Would you happen to know if anyone else you have read was also on an antidepressant and what occurred. I am curious why the symptoms I have had especially the depersonalizations has gone away then reoccurred again. Do you think it maybe a type of seizure? How many episodes would you say you had of depersonalization ? Thanks

Melissa, I've read a few accounts of others who were also on anti depressants. Find anxiety and/or depression online forums and do a search for flagyl to read them yourself. I have read that serotonin sickness is possible, but I doubt it's that. I have found a lot of anecdotal evidence that those with a history of anxiety and depression are more susceptible to the negative effects of flagyl. I have been prescribed antidepressants in the past and flagyl has sent me for quite the anxious ride. Do you notice your derealization/depersonalization is worse at certain times? Mine used to be pretty bad twenty four seven, now it comes on for just a little while after a meal. I've read this brain fog could be from yeast/dysbiosis. When I took flagyl it basically gave me horrible diarrhea for three days where I was going 10-15 times a day. So I think at least in my case dysbiosis makes sense. Gut bacteria are so important.

I can say that it seems like a lot of people experience the depersonalization, which is a classic anxiety symptom. I think anxiety is really a blanket diagnosis given to help explain certain conditions that medical science don't understand yet. Like I said before, I believe damage in the stomach is one likely cause of the symptoms. Give your stomach some healing nutrients like l glutamine and possibly marshmallow root and/or slippery elm bark.

A naturopathic doctor could probably help a bit, melissa. They can give you a diet and nutrients to try. Also look into acupuncture as its main focus is to improve digestion. I think traditional Chinese medicine has always viewed symptoms of anxiety and depression as signs of problems with digestion / digestive organs.

It has been 3 months since I have taken this awful antibiotic, and I mostly want to reach out to those people who are just experiencing the brutal side effects that will most likely send you through the worst panic/anxiety of your life so far. I remember the first day I wasn't feeling well and I started googling, I came across this thread. As much as I am grateful for everyone sharing their experiences and tips it also sent me into sheer panic mode reading all the awful things that could possible happen to me.

I had diarrhea that last for weeks and weeks after taking this, a brutal taste in my mouth, pounding headache with shooting pains, fatigue and weakness all over my body, tingling and numb sensations all over my body that come and go, eye pain and the WORST anxiety of my life. I cried for basically for first month after taking this medication because I thought it had ruined me forever and I could barely get up and function. That just simply cannot be true, I am stronger than this. The side effect symptoms and the anxiety led my mind to believe I could possibly have things like MS, and brain damage. I basically turned into an OCD Hypochondriac.

I have been to the doctor more times in the last few months that combined so far in my entire life. I am a healthy 29 year old woman. They gave me medication for anxiety and tried me on antidepressants. I tried both for a short time, but I stopped because I don't want to put anymore medication in my body at this point. I have had tons of bloodwork done, not showing anything wrong with me.

This is how I have helped myself slowly but surely start recovering:
1) STOP GOOGLING every little thing. This is hard, I still want to do it. But I know the second I read something terrible I am back on a downward spiral of anxiety.

2) Find ways to relax your body and mind. I have read a few books on anxiety that have helped me. The Power of Now is an audio file you can download and listen to from your phone. And Catastrophe Living is a great book on gaining control of the mind and body when dealing with illness and other stresses in life. I also take baths with epson salts and essential oils like lavender, and go for nice relaxing walks.

3) Eat healthy and give your body what it needs to heal. I started a vitamin regimen shortly after stopping Flagyl. I now take a probiotic, omega 3 supplement, a good multi-vitamin, and a magnesium supplement daily. I also make a smoothie every morning packed with super foods like turmeric, ginger, chia seeds, coconut oil, coconut milk and fruit.

4) Acupuncture. This was huge for me. Not only did it help me relax and panic less but it made my body feel more balanced again. I was experiencing some tingling sensations, they stopped after 2 treatments. I am going to make this a regular monthly routine for quite some time to continue helping my body heal and prevent any nerve damage from progressing. This is a proven alternative therapy for Peripheral Neuropathy. I also just recently started taking Alpha Lipoic Acid, which is also an alternative supplement treatment for PN.

I am not 100% yet, but holy crap am I A LOT better! So for those who are in the thick of it right now, please do not despair - slowly but surely your body will start healing, especially if you help it! I still have moments of anxiety/panic when I think about this stupid drug, and I also still have some mild PN symptoms that come and go - but I am SO MUCH BETTER than 3 months ago. I imagine a year from now I will be able to look back and say if anything this experience made me take my health more seriously.

Positive healing vibes to everyone out there.
D

Wowww! Dee, I am reading your comments with tears! I am leaving the same hell that you describe in your message. I am on AD pills because of the headaches, tingling and the ache in my limbs! I even did a brain MRI because I was thinking I have MS. Everything was fine and doctors and my family think I am hypochondriac!!!!!!
