Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 87) (Top voted first)

Updated

i've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.

i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.

is this withdrawal? how long will it last?

i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.

Monique it's really scary I can't tell if it's anxiety or if in about to have an heart attack it feels like someone sitting on me and I can breath, I'm so depressed I don't think I'm ever going to feel right again ??

Hang in there, Norma. I have suffered with anxiety most of my life, not every day but about every six months something would trigger fear and anxiety, like pain or being alone, in a foreign location.
Nothing I have experienced compares to this feeling on beta blockers and off beta blockers.

Anxiety and depression are close cousins; too much anxiety can become debilitation depression. Keep busy, find a support group around where you live. Use anti anxiety drugs if they help. These mood swings are difficult especially when they keep you up at night or you wake from sleeping with intense anxiety.

I started on Norvasc yesterday for BP....5 mg, possible side effects include swollen feet and ankles and constipation. No drug works the same for everyone. Some drugs work for you that do not work for me. I never thought Tylenol did anything for pain; now I see that it does, the brain changes, sometimes for the better, sometimes not so well.

Eventually, they will collect your DNA and prescribe the perfect medicine for you and only you. Let us hope that is not too far away.

I am going to an endocrinologist next week for the first time. Can you tell me what to expect? Will they be taking blood tests, other tests, while I am there? What do they examine?

I have had a setback here recently and have been extremely anxious with some nausea and some stomach pain....lots of muscle spasms.... and I was told after an eye exam that all was normal but I had slightly bulging eyes, a sign of hyperthyroidism. I made that appointment because I had a few days of flashing light in my peripheral vision for ten to twenty minutes.

My sciatica and arthritis have been kicking up a level.

Hey Matt, yes they will do a few diagnostics on blood, saliva, and possibly have you to take home a u/a kit for the cortisol level. They will possibly scan the thyroid but they can actually do a feel evaluation with their hands and determine the swelling as well, but blood work will definitely confirm it.

Monique, Did your endocrinologist visit result in any medication/supplemets or diet adjustment to help with anxiety and stomach problems?

And did he/she nix the idea that it was due to metoprolol use and withdrawal?

Yeah, I've noticed an increased sensitivity to most drugs, too. I'm doing okay, for the most part, but I still get bouts of anxiety and BP spikes on occasion. It usually lasts for about three days and then disappears, and it usually occurs about every six weeks or so. You'd think that I'd be completely over it after 17 or 18 months, but that hasn't been the case. Thankfully it isn't necessary to take any drugs for my blood pressure, though. Other than my occasional bouts, it's remained pretty normal.

Hello Matt good to hear from someone,my days were really GREAT,then a bad day when i went to my doctors appointment,I think cause I've set in the thought of bad news whenever I go,so I automatically became over anxious

What tests did they run to check for crohn's disease? I had a barium swallow and endoscopy done and they told me I had gerd . I get inflammation in my stomach sometimes and heartburn. I also stopped taking lexapro for anxiety .

I had a colonoscopy done. And some bloodwork to check for inflammation.

I am approaching 6 months off M and feeling better, not perfect, but better; however, over the past month or so, I have developed chest discomfort, a steady pressure in the chest, which seems constant.

Has anyone experienced a new symptom like this after such a long withdrawal?

Hi, Matt

I haven't had those symptoms.
But I wanted to say that I am glad for you because you had the toughest case of anxiety from all of us.
How is your anxiety now? Much better (I know that it can't be perfect yet)?

Can you do semi-normal things?
Can you walk and slowly go out now?

Anxiety is better but not gone; I was feeling pretty good until my chest started becoming uncomfortable. My blood pressure is still too high and I am wondering if this is angina. Every blood pressure medication I try has bad side effects. Cardizem made me depressed and Norvasc gave me nausea and both really did not help my BP. Still on Ativan. Cortisol levels were normal.

All the doctors tell me it is too long, now six months, still to be having withdrawal symptoms, that it must be something the metoprolol was masking. I do not think so.
Even after 20 years? No, too long. So I just listen and do not get worked up arguing.

My body does not read and memorize the medical journals and everyone is different.

I have not been able to exercise because I have developed arthritis in my knees during all of this. Three weekly shots of some gel was shot in my right knee, but I cannot walk for very long and I am used to exercising vigorously... just cannot do it without lots of pain and I cannot take NSAIDs.

Happy holidays to all.
Happy holidays

Having a difficult couple of weeks, saw my cardiologist about my chest pain. He rold me it was not my heart, so I am still spooked about that.

My EKG was fine but I had a 97 pulse.

6 months this week; the flushing is gone but I get very anxious with any company, because this withdrawal/anxiety/depression is all I have on my mind these days and I am trying not to bum anyone else out as this is a happy time of year. People start telling to me its all mental. Well yes the physical part gets to be very mental especially when the super anxiety returns.

I felt almost normal for a week or so, even thought I could make it to a movie, but the old ugliness.

I hope all whomare still reading this had a nice Holiday. All the food here and I was not even hungry.

Matt, I am just at a year off and my anxiety is still bad and I have 24/7 chest discomfort. I can no longer take any meds in pill form due to being so sensitive now. Beta blockers were the worst for me andnI swear it completely took down my nervous system.
