Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 84)
(Newest replies first)

Updated

i've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.

i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.

is this withdrawal? how long will it last?

i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.

Did anyones withdrawal seem to peak after about a month? I feel worse now then the first week! Felt like I was gonna pass out at the store tonight. So lightheaded and dizzy. It was horrible. I feel just ok as long as im not moving around much. But if I walk around or clean I get head pressure and light headed. So wierd!! I hope someone can relate.

I havent gotten a sore throat. I do notice tho that I feel ok unless I get up and move around like trying to clean or work. Then I get dizzy and head pressure. Its like my body craves it the more worked up it gets! I do feel feverish and chills tho.

Here's something else to keep in mind as we go through this HELL of a withdrawal. Anxiety can manifest in many forms!!! all sorts of aches and pains can be signs of the anxiety that is both part of this withdrawal and the anxiety of whether this will ever end. My anxiety took various forms, "weirdo head", chest pains, heart palpitations, skipped beats, headaches. So on top of getting off of the drug there is the anxiety about getting off the drug, which for me, created additional symptoms. It was helpful for me to try and remember a time before this poison that my heart worked fine and my body knew how to regulate its adrenaline. At 6 months, I'm almost back to normal. I am watchful for symptoms...and the first sign of weirdo head the anxiety floods back along with the symptoms. It's a cycle! Try and relax...trust that your body knows what to do and you will get there.

Sandra that's so off that he said there is no way that could be withdrawals because I believe any ache or pain could be withdrawal. I have no aches and pains today also that crazy eye thing isn't there. The pains when I do get them feel like an electrical cord that is frayed and zaps of electricity trying to make it through the cut wires. Feeling pretty good today and gonna go with it! I really hope your ear gets better! We can and will do this??

So I broke down today and went to the doctor. Thought sure this might be an ear infection but nope. Ear looks good. Doc completely shot down that theres any possibly that its withdrawal. Said its not possible that it is withdrawal. So aggravating. Im convinced it is. Oh well ill keep trucking along...

AS a physician, I have to agree with you. My Cardio friends either think I'm joking or describing a psychophysiological disorder. My Mom had a bad reaction to Blacken (another B-blocker) and my med student brother to track her into continuing it regardless. I'm 10 years older and I hold an MD and a PhD, both Ivy League. After walking my brother's ass like Christ walked the waters – "AND WHAT'S YOUR LICENSE NO, AND YOUR DEA NUMBER? I REMEMBER I GOT INTO LAST CHANCE MEDICAL SCHOOL IN MEXICO AND I WENT TO YALE. You don't have a license to practice under supervision, I don't think, but even if you do, if YOU EVER PRACTICE WITHOUT A LICENSE AGAIN, I'LL SEE TO IT THAT YOU NEVER PRACTICE IN THE AMERICAS... EVER! TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT MY EYES. BY THE BLESSED VIRGIN, I'M NOT F***ING KIDDING. NOW FOR THAT A**HOLE "SUPERVISING YOU". I brought him up on charge of Gross Negligence in the Practice of the Profession and other charges, and his license went again for FIVE YEARS. This was my Mom, for Christ's sake...and even then were dozen's of blood pressure meds from which to choose. Some of us have the right degrees, the right connections, and enough BALLS to stand up and speak for patients like you and my Mom.

So thankful to hear that somebody else has had this eye thing. I think it was Sandra talking about a bad earache poor thing. Ouch, ouch and ouch. It's so strange these aches and pains that are showing up it almost seems like we were on a pain pill and now we are feeling pain but it was just a blood pressure med so strange to me still. Thanks for your posts. I wonder how long this is going to go on for and I'm quite curious about cells holding onto and releasing of medicine when it is taken away. If anybody knows please let me know where I can find the info. I have looked around but not enough info.

I did have some headaches in the beginning but I just thought it was sinus issues so I never posted them but thinking back yes for sure! I'm sure they also will pass we can do this. I hate that we have to suffer like his but sooooo thankful we know about it otherwise it would be really crazy not knowing what was happening. I really didn't tell my doc anything so it's not there fault because I was keeping all the crazies to myself so they wouldn't try and put me on anything if that makes sense

Justme you're sounding like the side effects brochure for Metoprolol to me. I've had the eye feeling on occasion. Dry eyes can also occur among a myriad of other issues. I think our doctors do not spend enough time with us to listen to our problems! That's the most criminal offense today because of pricing and insurance coverage! 5 minutes to 7 max is about average! I think my former PCP was the best ever. Too bad he relocated to another city! As a retired medical professional, I know this to be true. Time v is money today! Keep posting. We have a wonderful group support here.

Today and yesterday were not good days at all. Pain in wrist joints and knees all day yesterday. Also my hands hurt. I was always so wired on the metoprolol that I think my body just doesn't know what to do with this low energy. Feeling tired but no pain today. I think I'm still detoxing for sure. I never would of figured a blood pressure medicine would do this. I don't know if this has anything to do with this but my right eye feels as if something is in it like a stray eyelash or something. It was hurting all morning then went away for a few hours and now it's back again watering hurting and all blood shot. My blood pressure is 119/68 with pulse of 75. That's just crazy! My blood pressure is lower than I have seen it in years! The only medicine I'm on right now is my levothyroxine. I am not a neurotic person at all and I just want to share everything that's going on just in case somebody else is going through the same. I've heard people on here talk about faces hurting, ears hurting and so on so maybe somebody understands this eye pain which has subsided again? Thanks everybody for listening and being here. Some good days and now I'm on a few bad days geeez

"Weirdo head"........I know that feeling all too well. That's pretty much what I felt when I first realized that the Metoprolol was literally controlling my life. It stuck with me throughout the entire weaning and withdrawal process. It's probably safe to say that that's the feeling one has when we don't feel like our natural selves while on this nasty drug. Doctors will never quite understand unless they feel it for themselves.

I also share the sentiments that many of you have expressed about this website, too. It was the people on this site that made me fully aware that I was far from being the only one who was having problems with this drug. It further made me aware that I wasn't going crazy, and my guess is that many of you have likely felt that you were on the verge of losing your minds. Just knowing that others had successfully abandoned this drug was all I needed to gain the confidence and hope to do it on my own, all while the doctors wanted to prescribe even more drugs to cure my ailments. Sheesh......what a whirlwind it was!

Anyway, all I can really say is "thanks" to everyone who helped me pull through it, and for those who're still struggling, just know that it'll eventually pass.

I could NEVER have gotten off this medicine if it were not for this thread. The doctors will NOT acknowledge any problems with this medicine. I have had 3 ER doctors try and put me ON it when I was there with BP spikes and palpitations during the withdrawal. I don't know why they all love this stuff. I think there must be some commission or something. Anyway, try and stay calm. I quit coffee during the weaning period also, anything that would get my heart going was off limits. Scary times but now I'm back drinking half caf in the morning and doing fine. Walking has been very important. My heart needs to learn how to regulate itself again. Recovery is possible!
