Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 69) (Top voted first)
Updatedi've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.
i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.
is this withdrawal? how long will it last?
i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.
Almost 3 months off and I gave in to a little dust from metoprolol to give me one day of relief. Probably wasn't the smartest thing but I wanted 1 day to not feel terrible. The side effects were bad but took away the withdrawal. I cant believe after almost 3 mo I am still withdrawaling. I took literally dust so hoping it doesnt set me back too far :(
Anita that stress is definitely a life changer. I pray all will be safe for you and your family. The comments here are good support and show that other people have similar complaints with Metoprolol. Mine is hair loss mainly! I mentioned that earlier.
you have a good point. That doc's behavior was unprofessional and your should know better than to respond to vitro wITH vitriol. That destroys all chances of communication. If that doc's behavior was "de rigeur," I'd not only reprimand him, I'd report him to the Office of Professional Conduct. If he came under my direct supervision (which he wouldn't, since he's not a shrink or a clinical psychologist or Master Social Worker), I'd fire his ass. AS ibis, I'd light a fire under HIS service chief to do so. WE don't need docs like him. I'm not going to suggestion were wronger even "intemperate" to respond as you did. The DOC is the professional in your type of interaction. He needs to calm his ass down. I'd be VERY UPSET if you also were one of my patient's and your reported this to me. NO EXCUSE.
Hope that heart cath might lend some information on the heart. Try to relax if you can. I know it's easier said than done. Sending prayers your way.
Toonces are you saying the lisinopril raised your BP? I've been struggling with it lately and the doctor just switched me to losartan... Which is making my heart skip beats. I'm so sick of being a guinea pig..and losing months of my life "adjusting " to these drugs. I was taking 10 mg of lisinopril. I wish I could take zero. The doctors want me to be on medication. It's so frustrating with all the side effects I don't know if it's worth the benefits.
Hi Anita:
Yes, looking back some 8 years ago. I was borderline at best on bp, so they put me on 10 mg Lisinopril...so the next time I go to the doc, my bp is even higher, so they increase to 20mg. The next time I go back to the doc it climbed higher so they added metoporol and then upped the mg on that. I never would have thought that the meds raised the borderline bp. I assumed my bp was getting worse...why would I think that bp meds would raise it? Especially when a trusted doctor was guiding me. If only I could turn back time and just stay borderline all of those years. In the last 1 to 2 years, I've lost over 100 pounds...so now it's down...not borderline any more. It's a shame you can't trust the medical profession. Like you said earlier Anita, keep questioning everything and then make your own decision.
Sorry to hear this, Tony! Many prayers coming your way! Just hang in there, my friend!
Man, that's great to hear, Tony! I had a hunch that they'd find the problems. You should now be good to go for many more years!
And yes, the two of us have indeed shared some "stressful moments." I could tell by the tone in your prior message that you were quite worried, but you made it! I've been there myself, and it's pretty nerve-racking to ponder on our thoughts as if they may be some of our last. I'm just thankful you pulled through ok. After all, we need you around here! Hoping for a speedy recovery, my good friend!
Hi buddy.
I've been trying to wrap my brain around all this and understand my situation. It's not very good. But I am taking the Meds I have to take and I'm cutting 90% of all fats, especially any trans fats or saturated fats. It doesn't leave me much but it's where I am.
I started running again carefully. It's been very stressful but I'm trying to fight it.
My biggest concern right now is how will I know if the stents they put in are staying clear. That concerns me a lot. Especially since one was right above my LAD.
I hope u r doing well jimbo. I really do appreciate you asking about me. You are a fine fella.
Jumbo, Kefir kid, Tony I hope all are on track doing better one day at a time. Kefir kid Dupuytren's contracture is not uncommon in those with Northern Europeon (Irish) ethnicity FYI. My trivia for the day.
Look forward to updates from friends here. Metoprolol is a lesser issue with me since back surgery. Should have been simple one day in/out. Now one leg worse than before surgery! 4-6 months for recovery so surgeon says. I will pay he is correct!
See your Interventional Cardiologist. IC is my brother's specialty and I honestly don't know exactly the technique but I know his tests are valid and reliable. Despite our constant fighting ("You people cut too damned much?" v. "And you people prescribe too many pills for too long."), that's just family. He is an excellent cardiologist. That would be my first stop. Naturopathic Cardiology is an oxymoron. The foods we eat, etc., do play a role, but I'd love to see double-blind research showing their success records indicate the success stents, pacemakers, defibrillators, etc. come within oh — four sigmas — of conventional treatment. If you're lucky, you'll find an IC who is also an Office Cardiologist. Continuity is very important. (Failing that, two doc in the same practice, etc.)
Lauren so sorry about your problems. I felt like a zombie when I was first started on Metoprolol for palpitations. Had feelings of doom. I dropped my dose from 50 mg twice a day to once a day. Called my doctor and when I saw him ask about 25 mg once a day. I've been on that for just over year now. I see cardiologist this month and will ask about coming off it and possibly try another drug that will help keep my blood pressure down and prevent me from losing anymore hair!! Hair loss is one main issue now.
Please talk to your doctor. There are other medicines for your thyroid issue that might not have the side effects your having.
Welcome to this group. There are some very nice members here that are very supportive.
Wishing you a lovely holiday season and to all the other members here!!

Did anyone here consult his or her PCP and substitute another of the many different families of antihypertensives rather than treating metoprolol as if it were methadone. Many of the symptoms described clearly are rebound hypertension and I'm not even a cardiologist. I"m a psychiatrist. Even docs only make very minor changes to their meds without consulting the prescriber or experiencing an unacceptable adverse effect de novo. Even so, the prescriber is informed, You can't just forget about hypertension and think it'll go away. (It may seem to "go away" — I did enough autopsies as an first-year resident on former people who labored under that erroneous assumption.) Hypertension is not known as the "Silent KIller" without good reason.
Look into aspartame causing heart palps. I had palps for 7 years until I stopped using aspartame and now I have none for 1 and 1/2 years.
I guess what frustrates me the most is how can I wean any slower? Im taking "dust" once a week to a week and a half. Do I just tough itout after that week and try to make it to two weeks then 3 etc? But same dosage since I cant go smaller?
Hi, i have been of metoprolol for 3 weeks and still feel withdrawals . About how long does it usually take to feel normal again? Its getting better slowy but surely.
I am on 3 weeks so maybe i am still struggling thru it . I guess this week i feel i more per it being allergy season were i live
JINXD8 sounds like a serious problem with your symptoms from Met. My advice is to see a doctor or even go to the ER. It's a bad choice for someone wirh asthma history. Not sure if you have any history of that. There are other medicines that can be used for svt. Good luck and keep us updated.
Happy New Year to the others who've been kind enough to share their problems on this forum. I'm still hoping to get my met changed to another drug for my palpitations. I need to stop my hair loss which I believe is due to long term used of Met.
Did any one take anxiety meds while going thru withdrawals and did it help? I still don't feel my self and anxiety is killing me. If so can you email me some tips to get thru it? {edited for privacy}
Wow Lauren....vibrating internally was a great description omg I'm still coming to terms with what this stuff has done to me. Been off of it since he end of Nov. still at a loss for words kind of dumbfounded on all this info?? It has been a heck of a ride for 8 years now until I found the truth for my issues. Getting better all the time! Not sure how long this will last but my heart is much happier going back to its old self. I keep telling my heart I'm soooo sorry.????
