i've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.
i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.
is this withdrawal? how long will it last?
i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.
Thank you Danny and Lauren. Helps so much to know I am not alone!!
Everyone's different but Be prepared for the Long haul. It was the worst year of my life. I quit cold turkey over a year ago. The last month has been great. I'm finally getting great sleep, wonderful energy I didn't know I could feel this great. I was on it for 10yrs. The withdrawals were long and difficult. Be prepared to second guess your body and wonder if it's something else that's wrong. I did a lot during this year to help me cope with the symptoms. My dr gave me Xanax which I hesitated to take but it actually really helped me function. It is addictive and as I tapered off I also had some Xanax withdrawals. (Mild compared to M). I highly suggest you take rodhiola and magnesium. If you are depressed try relora.
Sounds exactly like me Sandra. :(
I do notice that the good days or stretches are slowly getting to be of better quality, then whammo.
Lauren, when you have these "waves" of withdrawal, do you have a few good weeks (but a few small effects still) and then major effects for a couple weeks? I just got off a bad 2 week run but im still having a few problems. What problems are you still having? I still have fast heart rate when I mow or clean house. Also have some anxiety and lately been getting ddepressed in the evenings. Als dizzy and last week was very light headed and shaky.
16 days for me, I quit cold turkey also, I feel terrible! Back pain and breathing problems! Hope this goes away soon hope you feel better soon! How long were you on the meds and what dose seems like some people on here been on the Metprolol for quite a while. I was only on for 5 months and it was terrrible
Been on metoprolol, quit cold turkey 10 days ago. Having horrible panic attacks involving walking, which is why I quit it... Was horrible on it, am some better, just wish I knew how much longer, anyone
Lauren, I also broke down last week. Cried myself to sleep. My husband and I were supposed to have a date night after not having kids at home for first time in 6 mo. I felt terrible and didnt even want to go out to eat. I hated my body for ruining our night. I dont think ill ever feel normal again :(
I was doing great, no psvts for almost a month. I had not taken any metoprolol for the last week , after weaning myself down to 3 mgs a day. Then today, three psvts in a few hours--I had almost forgotten how fast a heart can beat....and how exhausting these episodes can be. I took 6 mgs and now feel tired and unsure what direction to take. Anybody have any ideas?
I am 6 mos off and still fighting the same fight you are Sandra. I see doc monthly, have further tweaked my diet (much more raw dark vegs etc), and am trying to keep my chin up. I broke down bawling all over my husband just last night, some things he said made me realize just how little others understand about how this affects us. He felt awful, but he needed to understand! Every day is still a crap shoot, but I remain hopeful that I will continue to improve. Stay strong!
I have had a crappy couple weeks. Started out just being real dizzy. Then really light headed, short of breath and anxious. Today my head feels funky and I am shaky. Just feel yucky. Had a good week then this hit and has been this way a couple weeks. This goodthen bad is teterrible! 5 mo off and still dealing with this?!? Anyone else this far off still having same symptoms?
Norma, I hope you bounce back soon, too! Unfortunately, getting off of this stuff has been very difficult for some. After hearing what others have gone through, I feel as though I'm one of the lucky ones. Still, it was by far the worst experience of my life. I felt extremely ill on a daily basis with absolutely no energy to speak of, and this isn't to mention the numerous side effects I was enduring. Even worse, I was beginning to lose my will to live. It just felt as though there was no end in sight and that my body had lost all control of its normal functions. On the other hand, I became very determined to conquer it before giving up all hope, so I took in everything I possibly could from those who were posting here, and from there I went into a weaning process while logging my doses and feelings each and every day. It's just important to find a process that works for you. In just three more days I'll be celebrating one year of being Metoprolol-free, so if I can do it, I'm sure you can, too!
You know, sometimes I wonder why I still visit this site even though I've been doing pretty well, but I have to admit that there's a side of me that became quite angry about doctors and the pharmaceutical profession that allows this sort of thing to occur in the first place. Perhaps even more bothersome is the fact that most doctors refuse to acknowledge that this problem even exists with those who have sensitivity issues with this drug. I find it very troubling, to say the least. In the end, though, I can't say enough good things about the people I found at this website when I desperately needed the help, for they really helped me to get through a horrible period of my life.
Jimbo thanks so much, I already feel better knowing immoral nuts lol! I have been reading and it's been very helpful. Thank goodness I found this place. Hope I will bounce back soon! Thanks so much for your help ??
Norma, I actually lost track of how many times I went to the ER when I was weaning off this drug and through withdrawal, and all of the doctors I saw didn't know what was going on. This just seems to happen with those who are ultra-sensitive to this drug. It is indeed scary, and for several weeks I didn't know if I'd ever feel normal again.
The good news is that you're not alone, and nearly every one of us here have experience the same ordeal. It might be wise to read some of the previous posts to get a feel for what others have gone through and how they've overcome it. In my case, I went through about five weeks of the weaning process followed by about five or six weeks of withdrawal hell. After nearly a year off the drug, I still get off-days where I don't feel quite right. But, chest discomfort, heart palpitations, dizziness, shortness of breath, numbness, headaches, etc., etc. can all be symptoms and/or side effects. There are lots of great folks here, though, so you came to the right place.
Glad your feeling better Ralph! Thanks for the imput
Thanks so much Laura! I was told by my cardio to stop so I did and now I'm reading that's not good! I'm so upset because everyone thinks I'm nuts and telling me it should be out of my system. I feel much better at least mentally knowing that others have gone through he same thing ??
Norma, you will need to titrate off VERY VERY slowly, it takes some of us up to a year to be totally symptom free, due to the time it takes for sensitive folks to get their systems to reset. This is a NASTY medicine. What you are describbing is right on track with what the rest of us have gone thru. Read thru old posts, it will be an eye opener and very helpful.
Sandra, stop the iron and take the copper daily for 3-4 weeks, then try adding iron back in slowly, continuing copper. :)
Norma I've been of it for maybe 6 weeks dr. Switched me to coreg, that's no better , I'm off that and now on benicar, much better but still side effects but not like metoprolol
Ralph I'm going through the same thing doctors told me know way the motprolol is still in my system I feel like an elephant is sitting on my lungs! No one will listen. Did it get any better for you?
Sandra I was on 25 mg of motprolol for about six months, I had side effect from he start but then they subsided, then came back. Doc told me to stop and call him back, well it's been the worst two weeks almost went to ER thinking I'm having a heart attack, called him back today and I'm waiting to hear from him, this is very scary
