Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 58)

Updated

i've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.

i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.

is this withdrawal? how long will it last?

i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.

I finally caved in and started taking Lexapro. I had too many physical anxiety symptoms. But my doctor is aware and started me on only 2.5 mgs and then Will go to 5mg . Lets see how this goes yesterday was my first pill.

Sandra don't lose hope! It took me 4 months off to see the light at the end of the tunnel and 6 months to feel GOOD! You are making progress. Hang in there and don't give up. You've already been through the worst of it! :)

Thank you ccjj88 i thought about it long and hard and came to conclusion that we suffer hard after getting off beta bkockers because our systems go out of line and develop hard anxiety . So i want to gey rid of it so i also know if my bp is ok with out meds.

OMG having a ROUGH few days, majorly disrupted sleep schedule for 2 of last three nights has totally torpedoed me. Wonky head, lots of pounding pulse episodes, dizzy spells, amxiety. Tincture helps tamp it down but obviously I'm not out of the woods yet. After 6 good days.... so disappointing. SO hard to work like this.

All of you should get checked for Acid Reflux problems. I hope that it fixes most of you to take H2 blockers or PPI inhibitors.

I hope everyone starts to feel better. I think the worst part is the constant yo-yo effect and feeling good for a bit and then wham back to feeling like crap. Prayers for all.

I went into afib a month ago. Went to the hospital and 12 hours later with an IV drip I was back into sinus rythm. Doctor put me on Metoprolol 25/ mg for, rate control and high blook pressure. Once a day. The thing is I knew there was something causing my problems. I did have an acid reflux problem. So after six days of taking metoprolol I stopped. Got on Zantac for 2 weeks. During the first few days my heart would speed up for no good reason at all. Maybe once or twice a day. These episodes would last for only a minute or so. I have now not taken Zantac for a week and all problems are gone.

Just trying to help . I know my symptoms won't apply to everyone, but if even one persons problems are caused by acid reflux and the doctors don't care enough to figure it out, we'll maybe I can save one persons life!

I am actually going to see a doctor next about this myself . I have had more stomach aches and heartburn ever since i got of metoprolol.

I'm just saying. You can have acid reflux and not even know it. In my cas it was spotty but I ate a lot layin down. Big mistake.

Anyway please get checked. If there is no other reason why you are having blood pressure problems or heart rate issues, then this MAY be your problem

I've been reading a lot of negative reports about Metropolol on this thread. For me it was a life saver and was grateful for it. Now my physician is removing me from it and 'sliding me sideways' off Metropolol to Propranolol at a 100 mg Metropolol to 40 mg Propranolol equivalency - my dose was 300 mg a day, so I'm sliding off at 40 mg Propranolol 3 times a day and then told I can reduce. Having slid over today, I am dizzy, the room is moving at times, my blood pressure (while in a good range) is flip flopping, and my blood sugar count, while not too high is going up and down sufficiently to be irritating. Thank God that I have something to cut back on the symptoms.

This is my first post, but I'm really struggling with weaning off of Metoprolol and wondered if anyone had advice or could relate. Long story short, I was diagnosed with SVT and was put on Metoprolol prior to having a catheter ablation. I was taking 50 mg once a day for about a month and was told to stop cold turkey before my procedure. I now realize I was having withdrawal effects in those 3 days. After my procedure, the drs concluded I was having withdrawal and was put back on the full dose for 3 days, then a week at 25 mg, then a week at 12.5 mg and then told to stop completely. Today is my first day off the medicine completely and my main side effect is that my resting HR is about 80, but the second I stand up and do anything (walk around the house, go to the bathroom) it shoots up to 120. This is what I was experiencing when I initially stopped cold turkey. I have a call into the Dr, but I'm so stressed by this and it's causing me a great deal of anxiety.

For those that have weaned, how long did it take you? Will this get better? What can I do in the meantime? It seems crazy to me that 12.5 mg kept this under control, but no medicine at all has this effect.

I apologize for the length, but appreciate any feedback!! Good luck to everyone else that is dealing with this. I honestly wish I had never started taking it in the first place.

Hi Erin, do yourself a huge favor and actually read thru this whole thread . It will give you an idea of what to expect, and some ideas on how to help yourself.
Sandra, the wonky head is cottony, fuzzy thinking, inability to concentrate, slightly woozy, feel totally and completely out of it stupid and high, which is a sensation I CANNOT tolerate. If I move or turn my head too quickly it's like my brain can't keep up. It is HORRIBLE.

Still having a hard time cleaning and moving around too much. I get light headed and yucky and heart rate gets high. Anyone else?

Erin, sorry to hear about your troubles with Metoprolol, but you've found a place where many others have gone through the same ordeal. I'll second Lauren's idea of reading past posts in this thread, for there's a lot of good information here. Perhaps the first thing to keep in mind is that we're all different, and the drug's rebound effects and effect everyone in different ways. The key is to find a path that works best for you. I'd start by weaning very slowly and carefully. If you're on 12.5 mg daily with no ill effects, you can split that in half and see how it affects you. Once you become stable for a few days at 6 mg or so, split it in half again and so on. I know it sounds like miniscule amounts, but sometimes that's what we have to do. It's likely that you have an ultra-high sensitivity to Metroprolol - as many of us do - and it's something that doctors appear to know little about. Wishing you the best!
