Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 48)

Updated

i've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.

i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.

is this withdrawal? how long will it last?

i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.

Hi Lauren:

Months ago, when I was still weaning, I would post more often, and sometimes my comments would post right away, and sometimes they were delayed. I never saw a pattern as to why.

Weird. Thanks guys. Great to see you pop in Toonces!
Really tired of this, hard not to get very discouraged. Back to doc for check in next Tues. All this makes one think one is losing their mind. So NOT "me". Hard to believe that one short stint on one medication can have such LASTING and Wretched effects. Patience, tons of water, protein and yes.... endless patience..... also not "me" :/

Hi guys . Glad everyone is posting again . I made the mistake of taking zoloft for 2 days and i think it made my anxiety worse . Plus could not sleep well . Going to quit that and just take some l thenine like jimbo recommend.

As many of you know, I've been off this stuff since the middle of last June. Just over a week ago my blood pressure took a hike upwards along with having minor bouts of anxiety, irritableness, and the "weird head" syndrome, so I went to the doctor on Monday to see what might be causing the trouble. Once again the doc says "you're fine." As of yesterday my BP has returned back to normal. I haven't been under any stress to speak of, and my diet couldn't be better....well, for the most part. It was just weird! I really thought that I had completely rid myself of this drug, but sometimes I wonder if it's still having an effect on me every now and then. All I know for certain is that Metroprolol is some extremely nasty stuff for some people, and I wouldn't doubt for a moment that it creates a great deal of havoc on our central nervous systems.

Im happy to see how everyone is doing. Im really losing patience with not being able to get up and really clean my house or just go on a long walk without my heart rate and blood pressure going up. Really ticking me off. I feel ok when im laying or sitting. Then I get up and do dishes or try to fold laundry and boom...headache, dizziness and heart gets wonky. Frustrating!!!

This list of continuing side effects is virtually unbelievable. I DON'T MEAN I DON'T BELIEVE YOU GUYS, BUT I CAN'T BELIEVE AT LEAST HALF A DOZEN BOARD-CERTIFIED CARDIOLOGISTS HAVE TOLD ME THESE SYMPTOMS ARE SO VERY RARE AS NOT TO BE CONSIDERED. And I believe these guys and gals, too. I'm not the FDA. I'm a colleague, in some cases a supervisor. One smart guy suggested instead b****ing on this site, to go to the FDA's dedicated site for reporting adverse drug incidents. I directed a patient there. She wasn't an MD and they accepted her report anyway. I only was contacted because she mentioned me as cutting the dose of Effexor-XR from 300mg/d to 150mg/d and they wanted my confirmation. But a doc doesn't have to get involved. Here's the URL address: fda.gov/Drugs/GuidanceComplianceRegulatoryInformation/Surveillance/AdverseDrugEffects

They make it clear they accept reports from patients. Don't let the convoluted prose discourage. I have an MD and a PhD, but it's safe to skip over all but specific instructions. I did an informal Linguistics "once over" and if you have a high school education (or event ALMOST a h.s. education), you can fill these forms out. I suppose you can contact the American College of Cardiology, but I wouldn't trust them to pressure the FDA OR Big Pharma. Btw, I've been taking Toprol-XL (metoprolol) 20mg QD for years without incident. Turns out Medco's "house" brand is metoprolol manufactured by the original developer — I think it's Sanofi-Aventis. I have no way to tell if the original med lowers the incidence of side effects, but it's happened before.

I do the anxiety is horrible. I wake every morning with chills and sweating . But i hear thats one of the many signs of anxiety. Sometimes it makes me think that there is something wrong with me but there isnt . All i do is say to myself time will heal you . All you need is time .

omg. I cant stand all of you suffering so much...............I did also for a year .. I had the same horrific side effects when weaning... for me I had to stay close to the house .. I did some errands in between medications and that was it.. I didn't walk, exercise or anything. My heart pounded a lot and I was very scared.. I took all kinds of stuff , magnesium, COQ10, L theanine, camomille tea, anything to stop the shakes, tremors, anxiety. I did EFT and anything I could find on utube.. some days nothing working so I would cry and call a friend. sometimes I soaked myself with magnesium oil.... what works also is some celtic sea salt in water.. that will stop palpitations quickly or organic blackstrap molasses.. just down a tablespoon of it. I swear those things could work.
this is tmi but there were times I lied in bed and had to get up to pee and my heart would race so much that I sometimes would have to pee in a plastic bag.. insane I know but I couldn't move more than a few steps without wanting to vomit, faint or heart pounding.... but I kept going .. one day at a time. one hour at a time.. I kept convincing myself this would get better. I even had some angina for awhile so I started taking L argenine which I still take ..
its been a year now and I am off the (M) .. I thought I would die too but I didn't. here I am.. I now walk, bike and do exercises.. my heart rate is normal when I am at rest and does all the normal things when I work out.
I CANT STRESS ENOUGH THAT ONE MUST TOTALLY GET OFF THIS DRUG VERY SLOWLY. WHAT IS THE RUSH.. IT TOOK ME A YEAR TO GET OFF AND THAT WAS STILL A NIGHTMARE.. GO SLOW GO SLOW IS ALL I CAN KEEP STRESSING... HANG IN THERE AND TAKE AND DO WHATEVER IS BEST FOR YOU.. TRY THE DIFFERENT REMEDIES.. DONT WORK OUT IF ITS UNCOMFORTABLE..DO SOME YOGA OR CALL SOMEONE..
good luck

Thanks BEE . This helps alot. Knowing that here is people that went thru and still respond is awesome. It keeps my hopes up

Yeah, I went through many of the same things as Bee. Even though I was fortunate enough to get beyond the worst of it quicker than she was able to, I had all of the same rebound effects. It was the angina that led me to the ER a number of times. Like others here, I wasn't able to walk more than a few steps without feeling as though I was going to have a heart attack. Then one day finally came where I could walk a block, then two, then a mile or two. I was literally in heaven when that first day occurred. Ya just gotta hang in there the best you can until that special day arrives.

As of my last posting above, I'm on day three of feeling good again after some kind of week-long recurrence. It may not have been due to the Metoprolol, but I'm not ruling it out, either. My doc certainly didn't have a clue. All I know for sure is that it was very reminiscent of withdrawal. Ugh!

Thanks all, Bee, guys.... Thank you for your continued support.
