Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 44)

Updated

i've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.

i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.

is this withdrawal? how long will it last?

i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.

Sorry about your neck Sandra. Can't say I've had neck problems but I do have little aches and pains in my wrists and knees. I don't think we should discount anything that hurts right now as not being metoprolol until we have been off of it for at least 6 months. Hang in there because this to shall pass but if we were still on this stuff it wouldn't pass.hang in there!

I think depression has hit me today. All I can do is cry because I feel so terrible. Im so tired of feeling like crap. I cant even clean myown house! As of right now I dont see light at the end of the tunnel. I dont ever see getting better. I have read the past 15 pages on this board to try and feel somewhat normal. So tired of it...

Sandra, hang in there! I know it seems like this will never end, but it will. The anxiety for me during the weaning looked a lot like depression. And I was angry... Angry that a doctor would put me in this position needlessly by giving me this drug without any warning. In was angry for all of the wasted months of struggle. It will get better. One month for me was not a good time. It took my body at least 3 months to begin to see the light of normal. I've been off for 6 months. I feel almost normal but still have a twinge here and there or a rapid heart rate. Try and do some exercise if you can. Just walking slowly it can help immensely. I took vitamin c and drank lots of water. Anything I could do to help my heart recover. It was hell. You're going to make it.

I am feeling the same way sandra but you have to tell yourself that there is a light at the end. I know i am far from it but one day at a time. We will get there !!!! This may be the worst 2-3 months of our lives but we can do it !!

Sandra don't get too stressed please. It's a drug that seems to have side effects for many. If I were stronger I'd quit taking it myself. I plan to discuss with cardiac and primary docs next visit. I have down days too. My biggest problem is hair loss which I feel is from Metoprolol. My aching joints and muscles may be from it also but I've been attributing it to my age and arthritis. Please take a few deep breaths, realize you're not alone and above all strong enough to overcome. I look at many people around when out and about and see so many worse off with disabilities. I suddenly think I'm lucky in many ways. Good luck. Keep posting. There are many good people here that are very supportive.

Sandra, I sincerely wish that there was something I could do or say to help, but as others have said, "just hang in there." A day will come when you'll start feeling better again. It just seems to take a little longer for some folks.

Currently having the worst 3 days of my life . Did anyone experience constant anxiety , chest and back pains with rise of bp? I have been struggling . I figured this would be better since i am on my 5th week off

Yes. I had BP spikes for months and chest pains (had the same chest pains getting ON this medication). I also had what I called "weirdo head" which was like a buzzing fog in my head. These along with anxiety and racing heart beat went on for months, while et this stuff out of my system and for my heart to recover. My electrical system was messed up and it's only now (6 months off) that I'm feeling somewhat normal. The first couple of months were terrible. It helped me to keep records of my BP and heart rate so I could identify patterns and look for any improvement. It felt like I would never be normal again but it's getting better each day now. It takes time unfortunately. Hang in there.. It will get better.

Unfortunately it's going to be an up and down battle.:/. I went for a massage last night and it felt wonderful but I think some of the that was stored in my fat cells broke loose and I started having a bad day but decided to leave the house and go roam around the stores. Came home and exercised....I felt so much better. I will not let this get me. We must remember that we are off of this stuff and it can't do anything but get better. I am still so thankful to have been awaken to what was causing all my craziness. I also read a lot of positive books that helps also. I hope you get to feeling better soon my friend. My husband was put on it and he's just fine. Just like our fingerprints we are all different. It does help a lot of people but I'm surely not one of them.

I've been off completely since August. The weirdo head still happens but not that often. I get it on occasion and notice it's now associated with some random anxiety. I never knew what anxiety was but now I can feel the effects: racing heart, irregular heart beat, elevated BP, weirdo head. If I just relax and tell myself "this is anxiety" and try and just sit still and calm down, it usually passes by the next day. I kept lots of notes which I used to see improvement and to see trends with what I was doing, etc. It gave me something to go on as I prayed that I would improve and get my life back. I can say that after 6 months off, I can pretty much do anything without fear that I would have an "incident" and have to go to the ER with spiked BP which is what one of the side effects of the Metoprolol was for me, along with the weirdo head, chest pain and anxiety. I do take Lisinopril 10mg for my blood pressure but prior to the M, took it for years with zero issues. Bad months turned into bad days...and now its occasional that I feel "off". You will improve, it just takes time. :)

I could NEVER have gotten off this medicine if it were not for this thread. The doctors will NOT acknowledge any problems with this medicine. I have had 3 ER doctors try and put me ON it when I was there with BP spikes and palpitations during the withdrawal. I don't know why they all love this stuff. I think there must be some commission or something. Anyway, try and stay calm. I quit coffee during the weaning period also, anything that would get my heart going was off limits. Scary times but now I'm back drinking half caf in the morning and doing fine. Walking has been very important. My heart needs to learn how to regulate itself again. Recovery is possible!

"Weirdo head"........I know that feeling all too well. That's pretty much what I felt when I first realized that the Metoprolol was literally controlling my life. It stuck with me throughout the entire weaning and withdrawal process. It's probably safe to say that that's the feeling one has when we don't feel like our natural selves while on this nasty drug. Doctors will never quite understand unless they feel it for themselves.

I also share the sentiments that many of you have expressed about this website, too. It was the people on this site that made me fully aware that I was far from being the only one who was having problems with this drug. It further made me aware that I wasn't going crazy, and my guess is that many of you have likely felt that you were on the verge of losing your minds. Just knowing that others had successfully abandoned this drug was all I needed to gain the confidence and hope to do it on my own, all while the doctors wanted to prescribe even more drugs to cure my ailments. Sheesh......what a whirlwind it was!

Anyway, all I can really say is "thanks" to everyone who helped me pull through it, and for those who're still struggling, just know that it'll eventually pass.

Today and yesterday were not good days at all. Pain in wrist joints and knees all day yesterday. Also my hands hurt. I was always so wired on the metoprolol that I think my body just doesn't know what to do with this low energy. Feeling tired but no pain today. I think I'm still detoxing for sure. I never would of figured a blood pressure medicine would do this. I don't know if this has anything to do with this but my right eye feels as if something is in it like a stray eyelash or something. It was hurting all morning then went away for a few hours and now it's back again watering hurting and all blood shot. My blood pressure is 119/68 with pulse of 75. That's just crazy! My blood pressure is lower than I have seen it in years! The only medicine I'm on right now is my levothyroxine. I am not a neurotic person at all and I just want to share everything that's going on just in case somebody else is going through the same. I've heard people on here talk about faces hurting, ears hurting and so on so maybe somebody understands this eye pain which has subsided again? Thanks everybody for listening and being here. Some good days and now I'm on a few bad days geeez

Justme you're sounding like the side effects brochure for Metoprolol to me. I've had the eye feeling on occasion. Dry eyes can also occur among a myriad of other issues. I think our doctors do not spend enough time with us to listen to our problems! That's the most criminal offense today because of pricing and insurance coverage! 5 minutes to 7 max is about average! I think my former PCP was the best ever. Too bad he relocated to another city! As a retired medical professional, I know this to be true. Time v is money today! Keep posting. We have a wonderful group support here.
