Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 43)

Updated

i've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.

i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.

is this withdrawal? how long will it last?

i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.

Thank you Jimbo for finally saying what we all have been thinking re Dr postings!! Folks stick with it, I am about 5 weeks off and still having a few good days, followed by several off days. Slowly improving, the off days aren't as 'off' as before. Any newbies I strongly recommend that you read thru lots of previous posts, very helpful kind folks here! I was laying in bed this am early listening to my pulse bang and thinking, I'm ok, it's just my body readjusting. It eventually went away. Anyone else ever feel like they are literally Vibrating internally?

Just had a hysterectomy on Friday and my heart went into SVT, 211 in recovery resulting in a cardioversion.. They put me on Metoprolol 50mg to go home. I have an appointment today with cardiologist and can't wait to get off this medication, rash, tightness in throat and cough, itchiness, and dizziness. Never took any meds prior for my palpitations. Had maybe 4 to 5 per year on average.

JINXD8 sounds like a serious problem with your symptoms from Met. My advice is to see a doctor or even go to the ER. It's a bad choice for someone wirh asthma history. Not sure if you have any history of that. There are other medicines that can be used for svt. Good luck and keep us updated.
Happy New Year to the others who've been kind enough to share their problems on this forum. I'm still hoping to get my met changed to another drug for my palpitations. I need to stop my hair loss which I believe is due to long term used of Met.

Didn't win the Powerball but on the bright side, I have had a reasonably ok day. Fingers crossed that this will continue for a stretch. I hate getting up every morning to a crap shoot. Trying to be patient.

Did any one take anxiety meds while going thru withdrawals and did it help? I still don't feel my self and anxiety is killing me. If so can you email me some tips to get thru it? {edited for privacy}

JR, I ended up getting a prescription for Xanax for my anxiety, but I was very careful to take it ONLY at times when my anxiety was nearly unbearable. The problem with this drug or others like them is that they're very addictive, and you certainly don't want to open up that rabbit hole on top of Metoprolol withdrawal. A supplement that can be helpful is L-Theanine. It's very weak in comparison to Xanax, but I found that it does help to take the edge off a bit.

Sandra, I think most of us have had high heart rates while getting off the "M." We're all different, but my heart rate stabilized after about six weeks of being off the drug. I initially thought it had ended after four weeks, but I had a relapse for a few days after the fifth week for whatever reason. Unfortunately, it seems to be part of the process.

I'm also one of those that feared waking up every day, for I never knew if I'd end up in the ER or if I could manage to get through the day without major issues. You know, it sounds as though all three of you (Sandra, Lauren & JR) are almost there. Of course, it takes some of us longer than others, but the good days have got to start happening soon for all of you! Just keep hanging in there! You're doing great!

Nervously awaiting the impending Blizzard. Not many around here GET the implications of that word. So hoping we don't lose power, that would make things especially worse. Still a daily crap shoot here. Waiting for clearer days ahead. Still feel like my body is often vibrating.

Have your doctor take you off this stuff it is what caused my anxiety and a host of other problems! I wasn't going to reply on these posts but when I see how many people are suffering needlessly I decided I need to help and share because I have taken his drug for 8 years and suffered way too much. I have been off of it since the end f Nov and I feel and continue to feel sooooo much better. Lot more to say about this drug if you have questions. So sorry for your suffering and I hope my reply finds you off of this drug. Talking about M

Wow the weaning process took months? I have been off of it for almost 2 months and I'm just still n shock looking back that this is what was causing soooo many problems in my life? I'm just thankful to know these things now because it even messed with my head through the anxiety it was causing wow. Thank you for your post and I so need to tell my story once I can put the pieces together so as to help anybody else that has had these symptoms. Wow!

Wow Lauren....vibrating internally was a great description omg I'm still coming to terms with what this stuff has done to me. Been off of it since he end of Nov. still at a loss for words kind of dumbfounded on all this info?? It has been a heck of a ride for 8 years now until I found the truth for my issues. Getting better all the time! Not sure how long this will last but my heart is much happier going back to its old self. I keep telling my heart I'm soooo sorry.????

Justme.....I'd certainly like to hear your story. I've been off this drug since last June, and the experience alone will likely haunt me for the rest of my life. I really feel for those who are still struggling with it.

I agree Jimbo that he experience will haunt me for the rest of my life but as times goes on I feel so much better that it will just be a distant memory. I am for sure going to have my doc put this down as an allergy for me. I have had many side affects but the one that stands out most for me was the mental changes. Things would happen in my life and I would blow them totally out of proportion in a paranoid way. I guess that was an anxiety type reaction but much deeper. I really felt honestly sure that these things were true because in my head they were. I'm still trying to pull it all together but the relieve I feel makes me cry in a good way. Good tears.....I'm so relieved tears. I wasn't always taking the med faithfully because I would feel anxiety start to happen when I would take it so then I would tuff it out for a month and then give up and stop them but when I would stop my pulse would go high and anxiety still so it felt like damned if I do and damned if I don't. I had no idea what was going on. Long story short. I have been off of it since the end of Nov. and I for sure had withdrawals and heart throbbing feelings but I was better equipt to deal with it because I had more knowledge of what was going on. I would have never guessed that a bp medicine could and does cause withdrawals. When I would get the anxiety and heart racing I would just take off running sometimes because I felt like fight or flight and I decided on flight lollo. I kept telling my heart it's okay your just learning to fight for yourself again. I thank god for this sight and all this info. I do believe I have an allergy to this medicine. I'm getting use to feeling my heart beat again. It was so subdued for so long?. So you have been off of this since last June? Wow....how long for you to normalize so to speak? I will never forget this experience. That last couple of days have been the calmest that I have had internally in a very long time. I feel like have taken a Valium and I haven't. I'm so use to being in fight or flight mode this feels like the old me. I can't believe it has taken me so long to figure this out but then again a lot has been going on in the last eight years that I didn't have time to figure it out. I just feel the need to get on here so that others can be helped from that crazy feeling! Thanks for your input.

Good for you Justme...and thank you for sharing your story. I can't say it enough how reading through this thread helped me to validate that the drug was the culprit in so many physical and emotional issues. And reading the threads kept me on track with weaning when the weaning was very difficult. So many on here have given tips and encouragement, and a huge motivator was the stories of feeling normal again after being off of it. I've been off since the end of September. I hope my postings can help other people hang in there if they're trying to wean off.
