Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 30)
(Newest replies first)

Updated

i've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.

i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.

is this withdrawal? how long will it last?

i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.

Hmm. I don’t recall having any issues with either my daily vitamin or melatonin when the Metoprolol was leaving my system. Although I did have an issue with caffeine, even the relatively small amount found in tea made me jittery & a bit queasy. I usually don’t suggest supplements but have you tried taking maybe some magnesium? I take half a teaspoon of powdered magnesium most nights before bed as it helps me to unwind.

If you think a trip to the doctor would make you feel better, then of course go see him or her. I know I had an issue at work months ago. I can’t recall how many days I’d been off Metoprolol at the time, but the paramedics were called out to check on me. I was having heart palpitations & feeling dizzy. Anyway, they hooked me up to an EKG which read normal. I couldn’t believe it! Thankfully, it was only a false alarm. But I’d allowed the Metoprolol withdrawal & my fear of having a heart attack to turn me into a nervous wreck. I’m not implying that’s what you’re going through of course, only that the mind can play tricks on anyone.

But if you’re not having chest pain or trouble breathing then it’s likely nothing to worry about. Again however, if a doctor’s visit would ease your mind, then there’s nothing wrong with doing so at all.

Re: Uberchap (# 1965) Expand Referenced Message

So Sunday I started taking magnesium and a vitamin C powder that had multi vitamins in it. That night I felt some surges of adrenaline that kept me up.

Yesterday I took Calcium plus vitamin D, the magnesium, and the vitamin c powder. I felt absolutely awful last night. Surges of adrenaline for 3+ hours. I finally fell asleep and woke up this morning feeling the same. Feeling horrible and surges of adrenaline off and on.

Today is day 25 off M. Is this just a normal rebound side effects from M or do you think the vitamins are just not agreeing with my overly sensitive system right now. I’m trying not to freak out and go to the ER cuz I just feel so awful.

Uberchap (# 1971) --

I’m hoping this next week is even better. Last week was not bad, lots of days of feeling normal with here and there symptoms.

Today I was out and about all day and by 6pm was feeling kinda dizzy and funky again. Maybe I pushed it too much today.

I turn in my holter on Tuesday. So happy to be rid of that thing. This holter is the one that they monitor you 24/7 live and I haven’t had a call from my dr or the company so I’m assuming nothing serious is going on. I think they would call right away since results are happening 24/7. I didn’t talk to my drs assistant about 1.5 weeks ago and he had said the dr hadn’t seen anything just here and there Some elevated HR but I kinda think that is the result of M and getting off of M. The further I am from M the more my HR has been going down, and it’s actually way less than when I was on it. Go figure

The dizzy funky feeling kinda stresses me out Because then I start to think it’s something else but I never had these symptoms before M so I think it just has to be my body getting used to no more M.

I do have medical anxiety sometimes so I think knowing an answer from the cardio and holter will help ease the stress like it did for you.

I’m just ready to feel normal again without these waves of adrenaline, dizziness, and funky. But it is nice to know that most people took longer and more like 2 months + to have all these symptoms go away.

Re: Txcandy1 (# 1970) Expand Referenced Message

For me it took about 2 months, 6-8 weeks as I recall, before I felt better.

Hopefully your Holter results will be negative for anything serious. It was much easier for me to put everything behind me once my monitor results came back normal, as did my chest MRI. I have a mild congenital heart condition but only became aware of it last May. I let it make me paranoid, though. It was almost like watching “Jaws” then going swimming in the ocean afterward: Anything that brushes against you in the water becomes a killer shark! Well, every little discomfort, like indigestion, or bit of tightness in my chest became a heart attack in my brain. However, it was much ado about nothing. I’m back to walking & carrying boxes or whatever up & down the stairs at work, etc., w/o even thinking about my heart. It just takes time to feel confident again w/ your health. At least it did for me, anyway.

Re: Uberchap (# 1969) Expand Referenced Message

I don’t think it’s heart related either, I think it’s more muscle related and I have terrible knots in my back and shoulders right now.

Today is 22 days and my heart has been steadily going down. So I really do believe the higher HR was 100% the medication side effects. It just wasn’t agreeing with my body.

Today I did wake up with adrenaline surges that are making me feel a tad funky today :(

You and chocolate said about 2 months till you stopped feeling side effects?

Re: Txcandy1 (# 1968) Expand Referenced Message

I get upper back pain from time to time, & it’s always worsened by stress. It’s not heart related whatsoever for me, though.

It could be heartburn in your case. I came across a study a while back that Metoprolol can aggravate acid reflux, but I think it’s only when you’re still taking the drug.

Re: Uberchap (# 1965) Expand Referenced Message

Today is 3 weeks and I have been feeling pretty good this week. Dizziness Has Subsided and the adrenaline rushes are getting less and less. The one thing that started last night was a little bit of chest pains and in the back. Did you guys experience that? I’ve never had chest pains before really. I can’t tell if it might be heartburn but it’s frustrating for sure

Well today I woke up feeling very dizzy :( I also feel like I’m trying to get adrenaline rushes but they aren’t coming out in full strength. Much more subtle than the first week but they are trying to come through. I’m on day 16 off of M and just really hoping the dizzy will start to go away the longer I’m off.

Yesterday a company was doing drive by immunity booster shots ( vitamin b12 & C) and I thought it would be a good idea to help me feel better etc. but now I’m wondering if that’s why I woke up really dizzy today. I got the shot yesterday evening at about 6:30pm. I just think after M my system is super sensitive. Not sure if this is possible but I hasn’t felt this dizzy in a while and then today after the shot it happens

Ugh, so ready to be passed this

Re: Uberchap (# 1965) Expand Referenced Message

Yes definitely. The coffee ( I think) totally messed up my afternoon and evening. I’ve been on and off dizzy since :(

Yes, I think so far the holter has been uneventful ( which is great) but still leaning towards the inappropriate sinus tachycardia which is nothing really. Some people choose not to do anything with it and some move to meds or an ablasion if symptoms are bad. But I also kind of think the M was making me have higher spikes of HR due to the side effects. I’m hoping the last 10 days I have left shows a better pic since I’m off the M and the side effects are much less. We shall see. When I asked a couple days ago if he had seen anything else, he had said no. So that’s a good thing in and of itself. Now just really wanting this dizzy to subside all the way

Thanks for chatting. It really helps knowing and chatting with other people who have had a similar experience

Re: Txcandy1 (# 1964) Expand Referenced Message

That’s the main thing, I think. It brings piece of mind knowing that you’re heart is beating regularly.

The adrenaline spikes will vanish or at least not be noticeable after awhile, which is good. But you always want your heart to be humming along, so to speak. Hopefully your Holter monitor results will be good news.

Re: Uberchap (# 1963) Expand Referenced Message

Well that’s good to know! I had a pretty good night with little to no adrenaline rushes and dizzy. This morning went well too until I pushed it and tried some coffee ( I hadn’t really had any this whole time and I used to drink a lot every day) now about an hour or so after the coffee, I feel very jittery and dizzy :( heart rate is good though, no spikes in that

Re: Txcandy1 (# 1962) Expand Referenced Message

About 2 months, give or take. After that I felt well enough to start back walking, etc. For me, the adrenaline spikes went away 1st then the lightheadedness. Hopefully, your nighttime adrenal spikes will subside soon. It’s always great to get a good night’s sleep after all.

Re: Uberchap (# 1961) Expand Referenced Message

Yeah I think so too. It really is crazy! I’m really trying to just ride out the time and not stress but it’s so hard when you keep feeling all these things and not feeling normal. ???? I know time is the answer here. How long before you were feeling better again? Or where most of the dizziness, adrenaline etc went away

Re: Txcandy1 (# 1960) Expand Referenced Message

It sounds like adrenaline to me. It’s so weird how the human body cycles through so many different chemicals at different times. Drinking plenty of water in the morning helped me a little bit in the AM, but not much at all at night.

Re: Uberchap (# 1959) Expand Referenced Message

Yes I’m on day 13 today and that’s exactly how I feel. Right after I get up and right before bed seems to be when I feel the worst and side effects happen. Morning, it seems to be nausea and some jitteriness ( prob adrenaline) and that goes away sometimes after I eat breakfast. Mid day I feel the best and usually don’t get much maybe a teeny bit dizzy but it goes away quick. At night is when I seem to get the most which last night I think it was adrenaline rushes and dizzy ??????

Re: Txcandy1 (# 1958) Expand Referenced Message

When I was getting over the withdrawal symptoms, I usually felt my worst when waking up in the morning (adrenaline surge/burning chest & hands, & lightheadedness) & at night (adrenaline surge & heart palpitations), either right before bedtime or in the middle of the night. As I recall, the nighttime symptoms went away first. I did ok with the lightheadedness but the burning chest & hands drove me nuts. I never did find anything that helped with that. But thankfully, it went away on its own.

I, too, am thankful for this message board. It was a relief to see that others overcame their issues with Metoprolol. It’s always a bit of a gamble with medication, I guess. But Metoprolol is one of only 2 medications I’ve ever been prescribed that made me feel terrible. Thankfully, it’s nothing permanent & you’ll get better by & by.

Re: Uberchap (# 1955) Expand Referenced Message

Yeah I don’t have a problem with antibiotics but I do with prednisone! I can’t take that either, makes me feel so weird! But at least there isn’t any lasting side effects with that. Once you stop it’s over.

I just had bloodwork results back in for thyroid electrolytes etc and all was normal. I went to my GP at 5 days off M because the dizziness was worrying me. But today at day 12 I had slight dizziness but much improved so I feel like it’s just the M and it’s slowly going away.

Can’t believe this medication has such bad side effects on some people. So thankful I found this board because I thought it was me and something horribly wrong.
