Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 26)

Updated

i've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.

i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.

is this withdrawal? how long will it last?

i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.

Has anyone used Suntheanine version of Theanine?

I have never used Suntheanine.. you can google it or look it up on WebMD or other sources. I used the theanine and it worked well .... plus its very good as its an amino acid so it cant hurt.. I used to take a lot of it.. I don't use it much anymore but it is the same as green tea, but if you use green tea get decaf organic.. Even Dr. Stephen Sinatra recommends green tea...He is an integrative cardiologist.. wrote many books and has a website.. check him out. He is great..

So glad that my recommendations helped Jimbo................nice to know all of my studying and research and being my own lab rat helps others.........LOL..

From what I can gather, there isn't much difference between Suntheanine and L-Theanine. Both should work just the same. I've been using the Enzymatic brand of Suntheanine, and although it effects seem to be rather subtle, it does seem to help my minor anxiety issues.

For what it's worth, over the weekend I found that the Hawthorn supplement hasn't been agreeing with me. The primary side effects have been dizziness and nausea, and once I quit taking it, I felt much better. Between the withdrawal effects of dizziness caused by the 'M' while being further accentuated by the Hawthorn, I found it difficult to decipher which was really causing the problem, but now it seems that it was indeed the Hawthorn that was inducing a bit more dizziness along with a bit of vertigo. All in all, though, it seems that my days are finally at a point where I'm feeling a bit better with each passing day. Man, getting off the 'M' has been a tough ride.

Todd......how are you doing? Are things getting any better?

I had a bad weekend with chest discomfort and tightened neck. Finally went to ER to make sure nothing was wrong. All test came back good and got to stay the night. Doctor at the hospital thinks my stress is irritated my esophagus causing the discomfort in my chest. Makes sense with what I've dealt with lately. I had no issues all day yesterday in the hospital of coarse I was on anxiety medicine. Back at work today doing pretty good....just keep telling myself that I'm ok. I think 99.9% of mine at this point is stress. I try to blame everything on my heart and test after test tells me it is fine. I have to stay positive I think of other things and last resort take something for anxiety.

Just want to add that I am still dealing with some dizzyness and vertigo. I think it is triggered by anxiety. The few times I can stop thinking about the bad things and dont feel stressed I have no systoms.

Todd sorry that you are having problems. It's good you did go to be checked though. Can never be certain about chest pains. Women many times have back pain!
If you have esophagus problems is it from reflux? Maybe food reaction. I'm reading now and more that wheat and refined sugars are playing havoc with our bodies. I live sweets unfortunately so am having to realign my diet!! Stress is a killer. If you can control that aspect of your life it may help.
Glad the thread here has helped a few of us. I am still taking my M and putting up with my hair loss!!
Wishing you all a ice 4th July.

Yeah, Todd, it sounds as though you're going through many of the same issues I was going through. Sorry to hear that you had to go to the ER, but you're certainly not alone. I ended up going to the ER three times with severe chest pain and various other symptoms before anyone realized that it might be the blood pressure medicine that was causing my problems. I don't normally have stress or anxiety issues, but there's no doubt in my mind that Metropolol will induce these kinds of things to those who have a high sensitivity to the drug. Of course, it's always best to try to keep your mind off the stress to the best of your ability, but it's undoubtedly much easier said than done, especially when the symptoms become terribly overwhelming. I guess all I can recommend is to try to remain focused on your primary goal (getting off the M) in hopes that you'll eventually get beyond it. It isn't easy, but as long as you don't take the dreaded M, it should get better soon. I'm still not completely over it myself, but at least I'm now down to having very minor symptoms and a bit of occasional anxiety. Just hang in there, my friend!

Thanks Jimbo and DJS
Today is day 20 off the M poison. Hope the vertigo will eventually go away. Any thoughts on the vertigo?
DJS I really haven't had much reflux, but doctor stated you could can have irritated esophagus from anxiety and not have much acid reflux.

For the most part, my vertigo and dizziness eventually became less prevalent as my other symptoms began to subside. However, as I noted earlier, I was also taking Hawthorn once I got off the M, and I found that it was contributing to those symptoms as well. I couldn't figure out why I still had a fairly strong case of vertigo when my heart palps and chest pain became minimal, and once I got off the Hawthorn, it got much better. This probably doesn't help in answering your question, but that was pretty much my experience.

You know, just to add one more thing, but I do have acid-reflux issues and have had this problem for quite some time, and that was one the thing that the doctors brought up when trying to come up with a diagnosis for my chest pain. That proved to be irrelevant in my case, but I'm sure that it could be a consideration. Although, this Metoprolol does some strange stuff, and I just have a hard time believing that it could be anything but the M that's creating all this havoc in your system. Upon reading some of the earlier posts in this thread, it seems to have taken many months for some people to get beyond this - Bee included - so even though it's taken me two months to rid myself of this garbage drug, I'm actually feeling as though I may one of the lucky ones.

A controlled carbohydrate diet can most times eliminate acid reflux.

Jimbo,
I agree I blame all my issues on the Metoprol, but trying to band aid so to speak my issues until I can work thru the M side effects. Be it acid medicine or anxiety medicine.

Things have been a little better this past week. Palpations have just about stopped, still getting a few headaches and some vertigo. Also dealing with tingling in my legs at times. I have had two night terrors in the past two weeks not fun at all. Over all my anxiety is not as bad, but still hard to deal with at times.

Todd glad to b hear things seem to be getting better. Tincture of time I guess. Keep us posted on your status. I'm headed to Neuro for back surgey consult so doubtful I'll be posting much here. I still know my thinning hair is from Metoprolol. Nearly 3 years taking it. Hoping my new cardiologist I must v find will change it or remove it. It's for my blood pressure, tremor and palpitations. Must be powerful if it years 3 problems!! Oh, it's also given for migraines!

Todd, it's great to hear that things are getting better! Hopefully you'll continue to improve! Just hang in there!

I was basically symptom-free from June 28th until this last weekend, but since Sunday I've felt a heart palpitation on occasion with some slight chest pressure as well. For the most part, though, the symptoms have remained mild. Still, it's enough to tell me that the 'M' hasn't completely cleared itself from my system. On the other hand, I was also in high altitudes (mountains) over the weekend while also indulging in just two beers, so that might've triggered things a bit, too.

DJS, I wish you the best with your back consultation! I also know what it's like to have back issues......not much fun.

I was in M and Bystolic in April and quit in May due to bad side effects. Two weeks ago I had CT angiogram. They gave me M by mouth and 4x in IV along with Xanax to get my heart rate down to 60. This past Sunday I felt it wore off. I started to have the same feelings I had when I quit the beta blockers in May. Feeling like shaking, anxious, feeling edgy, muscle twitches, etc. I went to my Pdoc and he gave me 10mg of Prozac and 0.5 mg of Clonazepam. Today is day 4 for Prozac and day 2 for Clonazepam. I have taken it the last 2 nights and cut in half (0.25 mg). I wake up shaky and anxious. Am I going through withdrawals again?

If you are taking benzodiazepines then you need to be very cautious and make sure you take them same time everyday and never ever quit them cold turkey. Ween off if you want off. Your symptoms sound to me to be a side effect of those drugs and u might need to explore that possibility . I don't know the details but I'd be cautious when taking them. If you maintain a dosage prescribed, it might take a full week for your side effects to stabilize.

I'm no physician, this is just my opinion.

Xanax and clonazepam are in the same class but switching from one to another can be tricky and then throwing Prozac in there can be rough. The benzos effect a part of the brain which directly effects muscles among other things and can cause certain uncomfortable side effects. An addiction to these drugs can be very fast for some people .

Be weary of taking too much of these drugs . Go easy. But never ever quit cold turkey, make small reductions if you r experiencing bad side effects.

HP Mama.
omg,. It does sound like your body is detoxing from all the drugs.. it makes me sick how these doctors just keep prescribing more drugs on top of drugs... Please go slow and wean off slow.. and then find natural alternatives if you need them. we have mentioned l theanine on here for anxiety... Sea salt in water stops palpitations .. Chamomille tea (a lot of it) will calm the nerves... and its safe.. I also use magnesium for stress and anxiety.. Don't drink caffeinated beverages.. get decaf teas.....also check out something called EFT tapping on utube for stress and anxiety.. also try some guided meditations.... utube has some good videos on how to safely detox.. even if they are pharma drugs they are still drugs..
good luck...........PS. try and get the magnesium spray as it absorbs much quicker into the body.. you spray it on you're legs at night.. it will calm you...
check into organic unsulphured black strap molasses.. good for the heart and you only need a tablespoon here and there.
Hawthorn and Motherwort herb can slow the heart rate down.. I love Hawthorn..

So right BEE about the pills. To avoid taking too much time with doctor's appts booked every 10 minutes today a pill is their answer. I have had that experience. As a health care provider, now retired, I am gravely disappointed in our care today. Money not coming in as quickly unless more patients are seen!! The good old days of a primary or most any specialist spending time listening to you are long gone. Patient is tuned out and given drugs!! HB mom you are being a patient given drugs that can be addictive!! I am sorry to hear that. I have back surgey coming up and it scares me!! One good thing ordered is a nasal swab to be sure the dreaded MRSA big isn't present in my nose or body. Just hope they are searching noses of the
health team caring for me!! Try the natural things suggested!! That's very good advice. Jimbo and Todd hoping you are both doing all right.
