Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 25)

Updated

i've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.

i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.

is this withdrawal? how long will it last?

i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.

Jimbo, Flagyl is one to be careful with Metoprolol also. Guess you are finished worth that round of antibiotics by now possibly. Sounds like that low dose of M is safe. Just watch for sure effects and check your BP maybe twice a day. Hope you get over sides effects. The antibiotics might be causing some of the symptoms or adding to them. Hope you are taking some kefir or at least eating some daily yogurt to maintain a better intestinal gut balance. Right now I'm concentrating on praying I don't need back surgey. Praying hard. M is rough along with anesthesia!! Keep in touch.

Yeah, DJ, last Tuesday I discovered how Flagyl and the M mix, and it wasn't good. In fact, I happened to be on the road for business that day, and I was seriously considering the notion of checking myself into a hospital ER while being two hours away from home. That was the primary reason the doc switched me over to Bactrim the next day. The Bactrim wasn't much better. Thankfully my doctor completely pulled me off of the antibiotics by the end of the week, and thankfully my CT scan showed no signs of diverticulitis. It still sort of irks me that the doc prescribed these drugs in the first place since I had NOT been diagnosed with a clear case of diverticulitis. I'm still going to need a colon resection surgery at some point in time, so I'm really hoping that I'll be completely free and clear of the M before that time. Quite frankly, the thought of having to have the surgery while going off of the M at the same time scared the living crap out of me. Needless to say, the result of the CT scan from last night was music to my ears. I also take probiotics as well as eating yogurt every day, so hopefully I'm covered in terms of keeping the bad bacteria somewhat at bay.

So, you have back issues, too? I was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease quite some time ago, but somehow I've managed to deal with it through PT. Still, I think I have a pretty good hunch as to what you're going through. I feel for you!

go to health food store and check out calming herbs .. Oh; Camomille tea is good and anything that calms the central nervous system. I have been there and its not fun.. also check out Valerian root........there are so many to choose from but just do your own research.

Todd sorry you're having such a problem. Medicine is all poison today. I hate going to the doctor and have them send me off with another medicine. I've been guilty of getting the script files but not take it! Only do that in event they check the status of the script. When they only spend 5 not more than 10 minutes with you it's not time to really assess your needs!! Time is money in practice today! It's a sad state of our health care today. I've been dealing with a lumbar nerve problem secondary to severe spinal stenosis. It's going to be a year in August that a twinge now involves the nerves to both legs. If surgey isn't a viable option it's on to the drugs. I'm not going there since being a walking zombie isn't my nature!! Just be careful tripping to wean off the M. It's a strange medicine! In fact reading the complications one is seeing rings around headlights. I was thinking cataracts but could be the M. Light sensitivity goes along with that! Just sharing that since it's not a commonly seen problem! You all have a good day. Thanks for the contact!

Thanks Bee and DJS,

I hate to start on another medicine, but I've been struggling so much at work that all I want do when I get home is lay down and work on all the stress in my neck and fight another headache. I've had a few small panic attacks not fun at all. Bee I will do some more research thanks for the information.

Todd sympathize with your problem. Sometimes too much stress can overload our brain! Not sure how each person handles it. I have had 2 real panic attacks. Both on an airplane! I have learned a meditation technique that worked for me but it wasn't easy. Luckily I haven't been troubled since, but have been around a few people in my working days that were suffering from them. The natural cure is always best trio avoid the poisons of modern medicine. Keep posting how you're doing. Good luck. Remember take a few deep breaths and try to picture yourself in a quiet lovely place. That's what worked for me.

Well, some good news: I think I finally go over the big hump of withdrawing myself from this poisonous garbage. I first noticed a change for the better when we had a small family gathering last Tuesday evening, and it was followed by having the best night's sleep that I've had in nearly two months. I woke up yesterday feeling great and felt great all day with the exception of a few little twinges of heart palps and very slight chest pressure. I got another great night's sleep last night, and I'm feeling pretty good so far today. Of course, I'm expecting to have to live with a few little quirks from time to time until this stuff is entirely out of my system, but I am beginning to believe that I've finally gotten beyond the worst of that horrible funk I've been in for the past seven or eight weeks. For a while I honestly thought that I may never feel normal again.

I'd just like to thank all of you for your support! It was especially important to me to have a place to turn to when the doctors and even some of my family members and friends were beginning to think that I was losing my mind. I think it's safe to say that all of us here have likely had or continue to have this little dilemma on top of having to deal with this horrible drug. Of course, we all know in our hearts that it's this drug that creates all this havoc in our systems and, as I'm sure you're all aware, trying to convey that message to others can undoubtedly be a grueling task. But, I think this has probably been the worst two months of my life.

For those of you who are still struggling, I sincerely wish you the very best in ridding yourselves from this drug, for I would never wish this sort of experience on anyone. The good news is that you'll eventually get there. Just hang in there and try to be strong. Also, there's no doubt in my mind that the very best advice I've heard from anyone was right here.

Punita just reviewing older posts. Not v sure if you're still following this thread. I hope you are doing well. This thread is definitely a help. Just wish the FDA paid more attention to problems patients have on the drugs prescribed. Primary docs seem to ignore our complaints!

I was on toprol 50 mg in am and 25 mg pm. I am now starting 12.5 mg morning. Nothing in evening. The thing that helped was 25mg of Ativan twice a day. Works wonders.

If you are on 25 mg of Ativan then you are in dire straits and need serious help asap. That's a massive amount. I'm on 1 mg and it's a nightmare to get off of.

3 days on Citalopram 20mg for anxiety and having to get off of it. Shakes, tingling in arms and legs. Doctor doesn't think its from the meds, but told me to stop taking it.
Going back to the doctor in the morning for blood work. Talked my primary into running test since my cardiologist is not doing anything. I'm just want to get off everything.
I want to wean off my Lisinopril 10mg 2x day at some point.

Sry u had trouble Todd. I tried the same drug once and it was awful. I had similar results. Cardiologists don't see patients enough in some cases to be effective. Takes months at times for a single appointment. You almost have to self manage to a degree. You don't have a choice. It's really sad how hard it is to get proper care nowadays .

I literally asked my doctor how would be best to properly ween lorazepam since it's so hard to cut at small intervals and his reply was I don't know ... The seemed hurried and I paid another 70.00 visit fee. All to hear I don't know.

Called a pharmacist and he said I should quit cold turkey at .5 mg. I don't see how these people do their jobs without killing people.

Finally I ordered a kilogram pill scale and I'm gonna just do the math and shave my own. No other reasonable choice. This raises the question... Why are there no smaller doses than .5mg lorazepam if they people have to ween? Seems like they want u to stay on it to me.

Even liquid lorazepam you can only get down to .2 mg intervals . Sad really.

You have to caution modern healthcare with some good personal research or you might get in a mess.

Todd, I sure wish there was something we could do to help. I do know that taking other meds while still suffering from anxiety from the Metoprolol made things extremely difficult for me. Multiple drugs just seemed to compound the issues even further. Somehow or some way I knew I just needed to get off the 'M' before taking anything else, and it's still worrying me. I've been fortunate enough to have two good days, but I still feel as though an anxiety attack could hit me at any moment.

According to the following article, Metoprolol reportedly can cause memory loss:

you are so right Tony.... The doctors and pharma just want to keep giving out drugs like candy and they are no help... I asked three doctors how to wean off of the (M) and they all gave me the wrong info......and yes they do kill people.. beta blocker have been known to kill people.. Look up what Dr. Mercola has to say about it. After awhile I just went online and found better info and then I asked my friend who is a Math Professor. He knows formulas better than doctors so he helped me.. Viola!! I made it but not with any help from any doctor..

Now I am taking a bunch of herbs and vitamins and things.. walking, biking and eating right; mostly plant based and keeping weight down.. I am trying so hard to stay drug free... I don't want those poisons in my body... I believe there is a natural cure for everything and I am hoping there is... I take Hawthorn and that is working wonders for me.. slows down the heart and just gives me a peaceful feeing and one cant O.D. on it..

Tony have you used any natural anxiety meds that have helped you with it. I am drinking a lot of camomile tea.

No Todd I haven't found any good natural remedies for anxiety. I haven't tried many either.

So any ideas would be nice. I'll try the tea sometime.

I was placed on lorazepam after leaving the hospital for temporary use but that's all it took for my body to get addicted . So now I'm stuck weening it. That drug is one nasty mean drug.

The only anxiety I'm feeling currently is from the drug as I'm weening. But it can hit you hard like big flashes of anxiety or waves. Very scary.

I'm really glad to hear jimbo is doing a bit better. I have been pulling for him. I'll pull for you too Todd.

Thanks, Tony! And believe me, your thoughts as well as the feedback from many others here have really helped! I am indeed doing much better, but I'm still feeling an occasional anxiety attack with heart palps from time to time. They just seem to come out of nowhere. Although, they're much more tolerable and short-lived than they were just a few days ago.

Todd, one supplement for anxiety that's been suggested here quite often is L-Theanine. It's also an ingredient found in many green teas. I'm sure Bee could provide more information on it than I can. I've been using it pretty regularly for my anxiety, and while I feel that its performance is mild at best when used for severe anxiety, I am finding that it's helping with my more recent attacks. It didn't help much when the 'M' had nearly full control of my system, but now that my attacks are much milder in nature, it's working pretty well. And hey......just know that I'm pulling for you as well......man, we're all pulling for you!
