Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 24)
Updatedi've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.
i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.
is this withdrawal? how long will it last?
i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.
Bee,
I was going back over some of the older post and read about the sea salt in a glass of water. Do you know why this method helps? Also been watching my salt intake so I was a little concerned.
Thanks Todd
Todd.
check the utube video the water cure for the sea salt to understand this. From what I read celtic sea salt does not raise bp but then again I am not sure..
what I did use the celtic sea salt for was when I would wake up in the middle of the night and have palpitations really bad.. I would put some sea salt (maybe a teaspoon) in a cup of water and down it fast... I am not sure what the scientific theory is but it stopped my palpitations straight away.. I think its because the sea salt has a lot of minerals in it and we all need a lot of minerals each day.. never use regular table salt.. Either celtic or himalyan sea salt is good.......You can experiment on yourself but one day in morning when I had no palps I just downed a glass of sea salt water and it actually lowered my blood pressure. Again it must be the minerals. I don't like making this a habit though but just make sure you are getting enough minerals in you everyday...............Check Dr. Peter Glidden also on utube. He is cutting edge naturopathic doctor ..
since I am taking the L Carnitine, COQ10 , magnesium and being off the (M) for months I have not had any palps... Now like someone else said I do not drink caffeine anymore or eat chocolate or drink alcohol . those things bring on palps for me so I stay away from them or just do moderation.. There is also a theory that gallbladder or liver congestion cause palps so you have to see what works for you.
Thanks Bee. I also read about sea salt awhile back. Celtic was the most recommended one. It's the main one I use. I have a cheaper brand but don't tastefully use it anymore! It might be good mixed with my natural weed killer compound! : )
Has anyone heard of any issues with taking magnesium with Linsinopril?
I take sea salt on my food and in water as described by others. Bee has mentioned the water.com site but i recommend to everyone I know, the actual book. The Water Cure by Dr Batman. His name is longer than that. Iranian name. But he's known as Dr Batman. I stumbled upon him for other reasons - my husband couldn't move off sofa with his back - we tried this. Almost like a miracle overnight. It also helped my brother's knee. Read the philosophy behind it! Fantastic. My sister-in-law is a convert and tells people about it at every opportunity. We've bought Dr Batman's book for everyone we know. Best discovery. Whole family doing it. Drinking ourselves sillly - water that is!! Of course, some people dont want to know, others embrace it passionately. Those who don't want to be enlightened often like nothing better than to constantly talk about their ailments and won't seek natural solutions because then they'd have nothing to talk about.
I'm using The Water Cure as a big part of controlling my high BP. Best discovery for so many ailments.
Is anyone else having problems posting messages? Sometimes when submitting a message a pop-up window comes up and says "You're message has been saved but needs review," or something to that effect. Then, just this morning I noticed that a couple of messages I had written a couple of days ago finally got posted. Not to sound as though I'm complaining, for it's great to have this website here for us, but it becomes rather difficult to carry on a conversation within the moment if a message takes two days or longer to get posted.
Anyway, day 9 of being M-free here, and I didn't have a good day 8. It's obviously going to take me longer than a week to get beyond this.
Day 10 of M-free, and it isn't getting any easier.
Jumbo sorry to hear about B the bad days. Is it body aches or more? I've yet to try getting off the drug. My primary not in favor fur sure. My cardiologist who prescribed it for runs of rapid heartbeat has moved too far for me to travel without letting any of his patients know! How's that for patient care? Not sure if you're in US but medical care for aging isn't more than a 5 minute visit with the doctor now! So searching for new cardiologist now!
Hope you get over the bad days soon!
Hi DJ...... I'm a male in my 60s living in the upper Midwest of the U.S., and I sort of live in the boondocks......LOL. There's decent healthcare nearby, but it isn't great. I definitely had better healthcare when I lived in a larger city, but I didn't really need it like I do now.
I'm still having dizziness, occasional heart palps, agitation, insomnia, and a little chest pressure from time to time, none of which feels life-threatening or worth a visit to the ER. It's just annoying more than anything. The withdrawal feels like I have a weird chemical drug buzz going on from head to toe......something that strongly affects me both mentally and physically. The feeling isn't too far removed from the initial problems I had with this drug, but it is better. Still, I guess you could say that I was hoping for easier times after the first week of being off the dreaded M. It doesn't look like that'll happen.
Hi Jimbo..sorry for typo in your name on my last post. I really think the Metop is causing my hair to get so much thinner. Not necessarily thyroid which seems ok. Doc ignored my comment about it last 2 visits. Thinking it's my younger than 73 years he's seeing now! As a retired advanced nurse practitioner, that I normally don't share, I know beta blockers are serious especially if needing any surgey/ anesthesia. Play heck with heart rate and BP. I saw many hundreds of patients over my 40+ years practice on that as well as too many other medications!! I've been taking 25 mg for past 4-5 years now. It can cause heart palps and rhythm disturbances itself! It was begun by my cardiologist at 50 mg which I promptly changed to 25 after feeling like a zombie and having a pounding heart beat! It was for runs of fast heart rate that he started it. Never diagnosed the cause of the heart rate changes! My other blood pressure med I myself discontinued recently then shared with my renal doc. He agreed definitely didn't need 2 meds lowering my blood pressure and affecting kidney function. My chore is finding another cardiologist now who might consider removing me from M. Or decreasing doseage. The Extended release you shouldn't cut in half because of the covering on it! Many don't realize that and can have heart irregularities from doing that. I did it, think I mentioned in earlier post, after my docs nurse said it was all right. Even questioned her specifically because I said it's extended release. So later ended up in ER with irregular heart rate! Was from cutting the 50 mg tablet in half most likely! It may be contributing to my joint pain in addition to my spinal stenosis and arthritis right presently. Wishing I could blame it for my suddenly gray hair! : ). I live in big city with too many choices of physicians. Keep us posted here. Good luck. Thanks for sharing so this b is longer than usual post.
DJ, I'm especially curious about your thoughts about "surgery/ anesthesia." The reason being (and I wasn't going to mention this), I'm also currently going through some diverticulitis issues in which the Metoprolol has made it extremely difficult to take antibiotics (AB) at the same time. For whatever reason, my gastroenterologist pulled me off of the ABs early yesterday morning, and I'm very much feeling as though I'm going to have a full-blown diver attack. If I can't take the ABs, they're likely going to do an emergency surgery, especially when considering I've had three bouts of this already. Needless to say, I'm going through a very stressful and troublesome time at the moment. The only thing that I thought might get me through another round of ABs is to start the Metroprolol once again, but I'm honestly not sure if that would make matters even worse. I do know that the ABs and the withdrawal symptoms I'm having from the M aren't working well at all. If you happen to have any advice or thoughts to share, I'm all ears.
DJ, just one more thing, but I did have a relatively minor surgery a couple of years ago, but since I'm quite sure that I have a high sensitivity to drugs in general, it explains the reasons why I also had a similar issue with the anesthesia as I've been having with the M. It actually took me six months before the side effects of the anesthesia subsided, and it also included headaches, heart palps, and heart rate issues. In fact, it wasn't too long after that when I went on the M. Have you seen similar issues with the M and anesthesia? or even antibiotics? All I know for certain is that the M is really fouling up my life these days, even though I made it this far.
Darn...lost my reply. Tablet problems I guess. Jimbo, there are 70 major interactions, 1,524 moderate and 190 minor!! That tells me it's poison! ?? There is caution with most drugs also to not take the prescriptive one with nutraceuticals. Hair loss, joint pain, tiredness, chest pain and many other side effects are listed! Physicians don't want to hear side your problems many times unless serious. Hair loss being one! Our bodies react differently to drugs. I am one needing lower doses of meds. Redheads react differently as do elderly. Meaning me now! I have episodes like hot flashes from M too. The anesthesia definitely takes 3 to even 6 months (what I told my patients) for some to get over the sluggishness. Again the type of surgery and drugs given all add to this. Dental work or oral surgery docs definitely need to be reminded you are taking a beta blocker since their local has epinephrine in it. I request NO epinephrine. Rifampin antibiotic is on the moderate caution list. Antacids are also not to be taken with M. Hope this helps answer your question. Abdominal GI tract gas and bloating are side effects. Read and heed the warnings with drug labels. Pharmacies give a list wit a scrip at CVS. Express scripts is less likely to have all inclusive from my experience with them. Keep me posted!
Todd, I have a hunch that I'm in the same boat as you are, only I wasn't able to go the length of time off of M as you did. I made it until this evening (day 10) when I simply felt that I needed to take about 4 or 5 mg. I had a good day 1 and day 7 of 10 days total of being M-free but, for the most part, my symptoms were worsening as opposed to getting better. I'm not really sure where to turn, but did you find any relief at all when you did take your two doses? I seemed quite stable at about 6.25 mg for close to 10 days, so I'm actually thinking of going back to that dose for perhaps as long as it takes before feeling comfortable enough to go off of it again. For now, though, the anxiety and heart palps are getting a bit too much to bear. Any advice from anyone would certainly be appreciated! Thanks!
Jimbo,
I would def. backtrack and go back to a small dosage if that will help.. I had to go up and down on dosages for months.. I remember being at 75mgs. and trying to go down to 50mgs. but I had so many horrific side effects that I went back up to 75mgs. until I felt more stable. The trick is to keep weaning down but stay on the dosages until you feel stable enough to cut down... I was on 75mgs. for months and then 50mgs. for months and then 34 mgs. for months until I felt stable to keep going down................I must have said this to you a thousand times but I feel as if you got off way too quickly and didn't stay long enough on each dose.. Plus the way I did it since like you I am highly intolerant to this drug and all drugs is not cut the dose but extend the time I took each dose so the body gets used to the drug slowly excreting.....................I too wanted to rush and get it over with but I couldn't because of the horrific side effects... It took me a year or more to feel stable again... but it was worth it...............and I know how frustrated I was..
Now a year or more later I am free of the (M) and can resume walking, biking, etc.. I don't know what damaged it cause but I am trying to heal that too..
Hang in there.. it will get better.. Be Patient...and do what is best to keep the side effects to a minimum... I remember having to get up in the middle of the night with my heart pounding I felt like I was going to die.. It was awful but I hung in.. The Hawthorn and magnesium saved my life I believe.. along with meditation too and EFT (tapping on energy spots on the body)
Jumbo,
It did seem to help my Irregular heart beat and I was finally able to sleep. But I personally wouldn't do it again. That short time of comfort was not worth the weeks it takes to feel somewhat normal. Next time I will tuff it out or try another method. I'm on day 12 being off M for the second time. Still having some dizzyness and just feeling weird at times. Doctor did put a monitor on me Thursday to see if he can find anything else may wear it up to a month. My EKG and stress test both good two months ago. I think most of my issues are stress/anxiety. I've always have struggled with stress, but the M has my system so sensitive.
Hey Todd! Yeah, the M will do that to us. I don't normally have anxiety issues, but there's no doubt in my mind that the M will not only induce anxiety, it seems to take it to another level.
It looks as though I'm going to start day 1 again tomorrow of being M-free, but at least this time I have several days ahead of me with no major commitments so that I can deal with it, and I found out earlier this evening that I won't have to deal with having to take antibiotics, too. That alone is quite a relief!
At any rate, hang in there, my friend. I guess that's about all any of us can do.
Jimbo good news no more antibiotics for you. Both you and Todd be careful cutting back the M dose. Guessing for the doses that you say you are taking you must be using a pill cutter. The doses aren't accurate in doing that. Hoping you can get by without M as hoped. Just be cautious. Good luck.
What baffles me is that during my last taper I was taking about 6.25mg (and yes, using a pill cutter) for about seven days followed by about 4mg for three more days, and I felt very stable during those entire 10 days. Then, after quitting for 10 days, my rebound symptoms were relatively mild while getting much worse toward the last of those 10 days. Since a pretty good argument could be made that 6.mg can be considered as a homeopathic dose, I guess I'm not really certain if I should continue to allow my system to wean further off that dose or to simply tough it out. Funny, but I feel so close to being done but yet so far......LOL. I have to admit, though, the two 1/4 tab doses (6.25mg) I took over the weekend didn't make me feel any better, but I do feel better today......so far. What an annoyance! Bee, I honestly don't know how you tolerated it for so long, but the important thing is that you found a way to get off of it.
DJ, thanks again for posting your thoughts on the various drug interactions and whatnot. It's really appreciated! I might add that I was actually taking Cipro and Flagyl and then Bactrim for a suspected diverticulitis bout last week and, needless to say, it was a horrendous week. My system just couldn't tolerate any of them with M still being a factor. I finally demanded a CT scan and found nothing but my usual diverticulosis along with some constipation, so I was quite relieved in that regard. I am SOOOO sick and tired of these doctors who are so eager to simply pass out the meds. But anyway, I think I'll try going with no M for this week to see how things develop, and in the event I begin experiencing severe withdrawal symptoms again, I'll just go back to 6.25mg and slowly wean off from there. It really is great to be sharing thoughts here while knowing we all basically have or had the same issues.
