Metoprolol: Do The Side Effects Improve Eventually?
(Newest replies first)
Updated
I started Metoprolol this Monday after the cardiologist prescribed it because of being in the ER with extremely fast heartbeats. After a heart ultrasound, chest xray, blood tests, and wearing a holter moniter, they found there was nothing wrong with my actual heart other than the fact that I have a mild heart arrhythmia which they believe was brought out by a virus I also had. Now that I have started the medicine, I have had dizziness, nausea, sever mood swings, insomnia, and anxiety. The cardiologists' nurse said these were all normal, but it seems a little excessive to me. I am on the lowest possible dose (25MG) minus the possibility of cutting the pill in half and I take it once a day. I do not have high blood pressure and am young and not overweight (5ft and 105lbs). Has anyone else had all these side effects, do they go away?

This should be removed from the
Market. It all most killed me
You don’t get use to it the BBB is catastrophic
Re: Margaret (# 95)
One of the possible side effects of antihistamines is irregular heart beats. I realize not everyone reacts to drugs the same way, but a beta blocker would seem to be the best choice for your problem. If you would take an extended release beta blocker and titrate it up to your therapeutic dose, I would think you would get along fine with it. You do get used to it, but if you are allergic to it, there is no use discussing it. It is one of the safer drugs available.

Saw people in my room
Hallucinating
Mind confronting
Super fast heart beat
Absolutely horrendous on for 7 months doctor said I would adjust ??
Re: Yvonne (# 17)
Yes. You are absolutely right. We don't take meds for recreation. We take them to improve our health or our quality of life. It is usually a trade off, as all meds have side effects, although they vary from one person to the next.
I am 84 years old and have been on Toprol XL for what seems like a lifetime. I currently take 200 mg per day. Toprol is used to treat anxiety in some cases, so it surprises me that it would cause it. It does cause tiredness, but all meds have side effects. I take it for congestive heart failure and to control afib and heart rythym. It will also help prevent angina if you have heart disease.
Re: Verwon (# 1)
On this crap for 4 months. Hallucinations, anxiety, body on fire. Horrible dreams started on 50 mg, heart pounding went all the way to 150 mg. Very dangerous drug they say all normal. BS.
My problem is it causes my blood pressure to be too low and there is concern that could be causing my Kidneys to function right. My doctor told me to stop cold turkey which I thought was unusual
Re: Verwon (# 1)
I stopped this drug as my hair was falling out and because I had confusion and memory issues. I feel so much better.
Re: Joni (# 94)
Re Itchiness all over torso & arms.
Yes I have the above side effect & I only took it for 3 weeks, then left off, telling my doctor of the itchiness side effect. She agreed that I didn't really need the drug the cardiologist recommended as I only had a slight irregular heart beat, which turned out to be caused by a small malfunction of the aortic valve, not really all that serious. I went back onto my previous BP meds. However the itchiness still remains, some days better than others, but still there. Am on Antihistamines which help a bit.
Re: KSitchy (# 77)
Have itchy skin and like a rash along with sleep issues. Getting 2 hrs then wake up with hot flashes which pass then that repeats the rest of the nite. Itching and rash are a constant. Anybody else with same?
Re: MARIE (# 82)
Hi marie, I am on the same medication as you and have terrible side effects I want to get off this medication but I know I have to wean myself from the meds and I will pass it by my doctor. I am so tired, I just dont function well on these meds. {edited for privacy}
Re: theresa (# 6)
Did all go away eventually? Including the PVCs? I am dealing with the same thing as you were but I haven't stopped yet, im afraid. I see my cardiologist in 2days. Im on it for fast heart rate.
Re: Margaret (# 89)
This drug is definitely bad news and I would never take it again. I just told my doctor I wasn't taking any more and I would go back to my old BP medication and suffer the consequences, if any. I didn't need this poison in the first place. I am still itching altho not quite as bad, but still uncomfortable all over my torso. My doctor says it will take 3 months to get out of my system. She apologised altho she was only taking direction from the cardiologist. I have a slight irregular heart beat but later the echo found an slight aortic valve leakage malfunction, which is not really life threatening, anyway I will take my chances I told her. I am 80+ years old, and they wouldn't do anything for me anyway here in Tasmania as I am too old.
Re: Sue (# 60)
Hi sue. I know your post was a while ago but I hope you are feeling better. I also am on metoprolol and have lots of side effects. I had open heart surgery to replace a aortic valve and also I occasionally have a-fib. I want to get off this med. My side effects give me no quality of life. Yet the dr says I need to remain on it. {edited for privacy}
I am experiencing a sometimes burning itching all over my torso since taking Metoprolol for 4 weeks, when I ceased taking it. It was obvious, that after 7 days of taking it the itching started. Now my Doctor tells me it will take 3 months to works its way out of my system. I am taking antihistamines, which help a little but not much.
Re: Maryv (# 87)
Dr wants me to stop metropol and take another bp med. Had no side effects in going on the metropol, but concerned about stoping it going directly to a new med. Did U “stop COLD TURKEY”, or taper off? Tu in advance.
I am 74 years old, I recently had a perforated gastric ulcer and the only thing that I can attribute it to is metoprolol and my age. I read in the FDA report that I had a 75% chance of getting an ulcer. I have stopped taking it and am feeling better.
Yes I have those symptoms as well it's not a good feeling at all but they are in fact a good medication for unregular heart beat but like I say the side effects are horrible the insomnia an dizzy feeling I get sometimes gosh
Re: MURPHY (# 30)
Get a second opinion. I have found that when in doubt check it out. And go with what u feel is right for you.
Yes you should stop the medication with ur doctors help. This happened to my son and now he has constant dejavu, mood swings, depression, almost psychosis. Get help asap.
