I'm elderly and have been taking megestrol, but would like to come off most of my meds... Is there an adjustment period or can you come off of megestrol fast? ## Hi Jerry, May I ask how long you've been taking Megestrol for? Often times, if someone has taken a medication long enough, there can be physical or psychological adjustment periods simply because the body is being cut off a chemical that it was used to having, even when the substance is benign in nature or non-habit-forming. However, if it's been a short while (say a few months or so), then in my opinion I don't see any reason why someone wouldn't be able to stop taking this medication cold turkey. On the other hand, because everyone reacts/responds differently (due to various underlying factors), the only w...
3 REPLIES UpdatedI was given Megestrol Acetate for endometrial hyperplasia. The doctor said it would thin the uterine lining, but I haven't started a period since being on it. How does it thin the lining if i don't bleed? Or should I be bleeding? ## I was wondering the same thing. They told me that I shouldn't have a period and I haven't I spotted a little that's all. But I rarely had periods before I started megestrol. I have thicken endometium was 2.5cm after a month of taking the meds I'm at 3.5 so back to the doc I go. Wondering if anyone has had megestrol not work ? ## Megestrol contains a synthetic form of the hormone Progesterone, which is vital to a woman's healthy menstrual cycle. Each month, a woman will typically experience a large bolus of progesterone being relea...
2 REPLIES UpdatedIs Megestrol usually used for someone who can not gain weight? My husband has very little appetite and is very thin so he was prescribed Megestrol AC 40 mg. He does not have cancer or aids or anything like that. Thank you! ## Megestrol is a progesterone derivative and, when given in high doses, it can substantially increase appetite. Learn more: Are there any other questions or comments? ## Yes. My doc prescribed it to me because I told her I hardly ever had an appetite. I am 5' 11" and weighed 127. I was tired of being skinny and it being apart of others conversations. Just as your husband, I dont have cancer, AIDS, or any other sickness. Just a poor appetite. It works though. I gained 15 lbs in a little over a month. ## Mother had no appetite and was loosing weight; broke hip ...
30 REPLIES UpdatedMy doctor started me on 400mg of megestrol to gain weight. Because of how quickly I gained, it was reduced to 80mg two months later. Could that change in dosage be the cause of clitoral atrophy? ## Hello Jessa, According to the National Institute of Health and their warnings associated with megestrol acetate I don't any warnings or adverse reaction listings that states this medicine causes clitoral atrophy, however, it does list decreased libido as a common side effect. My understanding is that clitoral atrophy is the decreased size and feeling of the clitoris which could be the result of hormonal imbalance and or restricted blood flow. Due to the fact that the megestrol is a synthetic hormone based drug it is possible that despite not being listed as a common side effect it could p...

Every test is coming back negative.Theyve rested me for Lyme, West Nile, meningitis, CT’s of Head, abdomen, pelvic, you name it, I’ve had it tested. I’m curious to know if Megace has given anyone else these “unexplained” fevers? I? have the doctors baffled, yet spoke with an oncologist today and think we might be on to this medication. Anyone else experience this? ## Yes, it has been known to cause fevers and hot flashes, according to FDA reports. Other side ef...

3 REPLIES UpdatedI am post menopausal. 58 years old Vaginal ultrasound shows endometrial long at 11mm small fibroid and polyp. Endometrial Biopsy results were benign. Gyno put me on 40mg megestrol for 2 months. Took it for 1 week and my stomach bloated so much I looked 8 months pregnant. Cramps, headaches, the worst PMS I have ever had. No bleeding but running to bathroom thinking I was. I'd rather have a D&C to thin the lining and to be absolutely sure the fibroid and polyp are benign. I refuse to take megestrol - these make me crazy crampy severe PMS weight gaining pills and it's cruel to prescribe and expect a 58 year old postmenopausal woman to go thru this bodily hell. Menopause was bad enough. Not for me! Asking for D&C. ## I am very sorry about the issues you've experienced, t...

Its now been 3 and a half weeks since i been taking the prov-era and i am still bleeding and She prescribed megestrol 20 mg for me to take along with it. Will this finally work??? Im so frustrated!! ## There is no way that anyone can tell you definitively, it can vary from woman to woman, since we are all different. It can be a matter of trial and error to find what works for any given one of us to stop such an issue. The FDA lists the typical side effects of these medications as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, irritability, and PMS-like symptoms. How old are you? Are you on any other medications? 3 REPLIES UpdatedHello, I am 55 year old, postmenopausal women, taking the Megestrol (160 mg daily for 2 months already) to treat endometrial adenocarcinoma on early stage. My last ultrasound show "lack of vasculaarity in the more inferior portion - ?significance?. This finding is not seen on the previous images (in October, before Megace treatment). I couldn't get an answer why it happens and what is mean. If anybody know the answe I would really appreciate the information ## Hello, Galena! How are you? Vascularity usually denotes having visible superficial veins, thus, a lack of it means that there is a section where these veins are not visible. According to the the NIH, it may, or may not be significant. In other words, if it is due to the medication/medical treatments, it is nothing to worry...
1 REPLY UpdatedDr. prescribed Megestrol 40mg twice daily to surpress my period (they are really heavy due to uterine polyps--haven't s heded removal yet). I had diarrhea every day for a week and trouble sleeping. Stopped taking the Megestrol because of the side effects. Has anyone else experienced this and did it eventually stop or do you just live with it? Not sure which is the lesser of two evils. ## Most side effects are transient and usually go away in about 4 to 5 weeks, once your body gets used to the medication, as reported by the NIH. When taking this medication, you may also experience nausea, headache and spotting. If it gets severe, you should inform your doctor. Is there anything else I can help with?

3 REPLIES UpdatedI'm talking Megestrol Acetate 40mg twice a day. Started December 23. My feet feel tingly and on February 10 my lower back and my right and left side hurts plus my stomach hurt off and on I feel bloated like I have my period. Started lightly spotting on February 19 after an ultra sound. The doctor told me to try a couple more weeks and then if I'm not feeling better she will refer me to a specialist. I not feeling good. ## Hello, Melissa! How are you? Has there been any improvement? This is a hormone, so such side effects have been known to happen, when taking it, as reported by the FDA. How are you? Since they are the same substance, just different forms, switching from one to the other isn't likely to help. Have you consulted your doctor? You may need to try something else. How much are you trying to gain and why? The FDA lists the typical side effects of this medication as possibly including dizziness, drowsiness and increased appetite.

1 REPLY UpdatedI was diagnosed with endometrial hyperplasia stage 3 - stage 4 is cancer. I had a D&C around november by gynecologist and was referred to robotic oncologist who prescribed the Megestrol. Since I am morbid obese, I did not know about the weight gain with the megestrol and have gained about 20 lbs in two months to my surprise; so when requesting a refill, i was told by pharmacist these tablets were for people who have trouble eating (not for cancer treatment as I was told by robotic oncologist). The oncologist is planning a hysterectomy around June 2015 because he wants me to loose as much weight as possible from a proposed bariatric surgery because the OR table has to be slanted in a certain position which makes my weight press on my chest making breathing hard for me. I do not know ...
1 REPLY UpdatedI was prescribed megace for endometrial lining too thick. About six weeks ago I had a hysteroscopy and a d&c...she scrubbed the ablation because it looked too suspicious...but, she was prepared to call someone else in. The Megace worked pretty well before the procedures. It was just a matter of which dosage would work.. Went from once a day...didn't work. Went to twice a day...didn't work. Went to three times a day...didn't work. Finally, at four times a day...it worked. Then, I had those two procedures. Now, we are back to figuring out what to do. Went from twice a day and now back to four times a day. Bleeding and cramping have gotten much worse. Follow up with doc on Wednesday to go over my options. I hope it will be the "h" word...hysterectomy. I am 47 and ha...
