I was prescribed megace for endometrial lining too thick.
About six weeks ago I had a hysteroscopy and a d&c...she scrubbed the ablation because it looked too suspicious...but, she was prepared to call someone else in.
The Megace worked pretty well before the procedures. It was just a matter of which dosage would work.. Went from once a day...didn't work. Went to twice a day...didn't work. Went to three times a day...didn't work. Finally, at four times a day...it worked.

Then, I had those two procedures. Now, we are back to figuring out what to do. Went from twice a day and now back to four times a day. Bleeding and cramping have gotten much worse. Follow up with doc on Wednesday to go over my options. I hope it will be the "h" word...hysterectomy.

I am 47 and have had heavy bleeding, cramping, and clotting since day one. My hematocrit was a 5, was hospitalized, given four units of blood, and that's when they figured out the problem. I guess they haven't completely figured it out yet.

Yes, if the Megace isn't currently helping, then your hormones must be very imbalanced.

It is estrogen that builds up the endometrial lining, causes cramping and clotting. Women whose estrogen levels are too high very frequently experience exactly the types of issues you've been having. I have had similar problems myself, especially once I entered my 40's.

Have they done a panel to check your hormone levels? That should give them a good idea of where your estrogen is, as compared to your progesterone.

Another problem with the oral form is that you only absorb about 10 percent of it, so about 4mgs of each 40mg tablet you take. Thus, you might not be building up enough of the progesterone from the Megace to counteract excess estrogen.

The FDA lists the side effects from hormone supplementation as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, irritability and PMS like symptoms.
