Lyrica Lawsuit (Page 26)

Does anyone know if there is an ongoing lawsuit against the company who puts out Lyrica? I am a mess from it. Do we have a leg to stand on when it comes to the side effects they found out from people like us? I am a long termer. I have been taking 900 mg since 2005. Is there anyone representing us? Thank you
Yes there is a class action suit in the states. I live in Canada and our version of the FDA is looking into also. Go online and just Google lyrica class action suits and you should have no problem finding one. Law firms in Canada are just now picking up the thread.
Hi Judy, i have not been on it my self but has been mentioned by others on this site.
Hello Nick, I have given them a link to this page.
Hi Judy, i would suggest you tell 60 minutes about this site and the Lyrica survivors page, so the journalists can get a feel for what is going on with this very horrible drug, this is actually a very interesting mufti faceted story.
I have sent an e-mail to the programs '60 Minutes' and 'W-5'. This morning I received a reply back from 60 Minutes on how to submit a proposal for a story. They ask that you either mail or e-mail the story with the following guidelines:
Story Editor
60 MINUTES
CBS News
524 West 57th Street
New York, NY 10019
60 MINUTES requests that all story suggestions be submitted in concise, written form, and to please not send any original documents or additional materials that would need to be returned. They mentioned that they receive a large number of story suggestions each week and cannot guarantee response or return of materials.
Alternately, you may send your request via email to: [email protected]
If a 60 MINUTES producer does not contact you directly within 4 to 5 weeks, you may assume that CBS News is not going to report your story. I will be completing my story and mailing it off today, as well, my letter will include a link to this site. I would urge all of us to submit their own story to them as well. Have a good day.
I am a diabetic and have been taking this for almost 2 years 600mg, and it worked great and first and as far as pain goes it works great, somebody mentioned lowering the dose, listen if i even miss my pill by an hour for the second of of the day usually around 4 pm if i go until 7-8 or even 6 i get my pain back slowly, that isn't the issue, the issue is i basically hulk out and get extremely pissed and severely severely depressed, feel alone, and i think i feel this way a lot now, don't find joy in much anymore, i have diabetes, neuropathy, gastroparesis, and glaucoma from me not taking care of my diabetes, and the one drug that has worked is slowly driving me insane and i don't like feeling depressed or pissed off, i want to feeol normal again with no pain, i think this is no drug to mess with and anyone who thinks it's cool to abuse is ****NG crazy!
The standard thyroid test may not show that there is a problem. There's a more expensive more detailed test that shows many thyroid problems that the standard one doesn't show, so if your first test shows that your thyroid function is normal and your still having symptoms, ask your doc to do the 2nd test
I am so sorry to hear that Nick. I too, never suffered from these things until taking this drug. I have been checking into high dose fish oil (Nutrigold's Omega 3 Fish Oil), I am thinking this may help with some of the after effects, or ease some of the discomfort. I would like to find out if the damage is done during therapy with this drug, or if it is stored somewhere in the body after therapy is discontinued. Also, another thing you folks may want to check out, is the drug, Neurotin (Gabapentin), isn't any better than Lyrica. Check out the after effects as well as the side effects. And to my horror, some of the people here were taking BOTH!!! AT THE SAME TIME!!!
Hi marlnn
My son still suffers from severe anxiety that he never had before taking lyrica 3.5 years after taking his last dose of lyrica and when he was on it and for a time after his hair was falling out by the fist full .
Judy and Dianne,
Along with the things I mentioned, my eyesight seems to be getting worse, I now have issues with anxiety, bouts for no reason, I was gaining 10 lbs weekly while on the drug. I have talked to several people who have had the SAME EXACT OUTCOME as I have. A friend of mine who works for a Law firm, and this law firm had dealt with bad drug lawsuits before, may get involved. You are right, we need to make the public aware. Oh, I almost forgot to mention, I had a beautiful golden mane of hair a year ago, I can now see my scalp. We need to be careful about this, to not have a suit slapped on us for misrepresentation, and any other Pfitzer can think of. I just wish they would take it off the market.
I would like to tell anyone who is currently taking this to ween off this NOW!! If you are reading these posts and are contemplating taking this drug, or any others like it, DONT! I wish I would have rather, at the time, of beginning this, put it in my mind to just deal with the nerve pain.
Hello Maylynn,
Your perspective on after effects is right on, and I too didn't look at it that way. Sooner or later I believe a person will be so scared they will get themselves off this drug. You are quite right - its about the after effects. It scares me; I have an eight year old daughter. The audiologist could not believe my level of hearing loss, he asked if I had a head trauma because it just shouldn't be so for someone my age. When I was taking Lyrica I knew immediately that it was this drug that was causing my problems with eyesight and hearing loss. After being off of it my eyesight has improved somewhat, but not my hearing. What has my doctor concerned is: could this be progressive - meaning exactly what you said: speeding up the aging process. We've heard statements made of 'dumb-down' drugs, in order to control society. Makes me wonder if we will end up with a bunch of geriatrics long, long before their time. Talk about genocide.
Has anyone looked into contacting W5 or 60 Minutes to get the message out there. I believe there will be alot of people on the drug who haven't yet put 2 and 2 together.
Lets give Phizer some free publicity, and do our part to protect the public.
Maylynn, please don't isolate yourself, this is not your fault. I did it too, because I just wasn't the same person as before; but the more open I am about it, the more understanding people are, and the message gets out there. I strongly believe we will get somewhere with this because it is total insanity the protection these drug companies have been given. If our law makers don't listen to us, then they must be replaced. Lets make this an election topic in every country.
Have your best day possible.
I had not thought of it from that perspective. Perhaps you are right, however the end result is the same. I also had back surgery and now I have inflamation problems. I have sacroilitis and I just had surgery for tendonitis in my wrist. It seems to be never ending. I had knee surgery last year because the meniscus in my knee broke. You do seem to have a point in that the normal breakdown of my body has sped up. I am now so hesitant to take any medicine especially any new medicine.
I don't think it is a much the "side effects," as it is the "After effects." The side effects dwindle away within 3 months of weening, then the fun begins. Its almost like the clock of aging has been put into fast forward. Maybe this drug is a form of genocide, because I have realized that I went from a totally active, viable person, to feeling like I am geriatric. Yes, I had 3 surgeries on my spine, but that is over, I am recovered, but I have no energy, still have "zaps" of electricity that run through my body from time to time. I "fish" for words during conversations, and what I need to say does not come out. like my brain is detached. The pain in my joints, burning, is intolerable. The swelling has gotten worse. maybe people are looking at this from the wrong points. I remember seeing something on TV about Lyrica being released in 2014 in generic form. Atleast I think I did. All of the "after effects,: is almost like normal aging, but sped up x100. any thoughts??
I check this site regularly and I have posted several times as a sufferer from the physical and mental effects of taking Lyrica. I have read the statements regarding the law that was passed protecting the makers of generic drugs. It was almost beyond my belief that laws like this get passed without the general public (like me) picking up on it. The other side of this coin is...those of us who are on medicare and advantage programs through Medicare are pressured by lack of money and the insurance companies to accept generic rather than brand name drugs. So...on one hand we are unprotected by laws our lawmakers pass regarding generic drugs and other the other hand are pressured to use generic drugs. Sometimes I feel like those of us who have paid in to the system all our lives and are now receiving our "benefits" are looked at a a huge liability and are being "disposed" of by medicine and the drug compaines. Ooooh gosh, did I really say that? It sounds like a crazy conspiracy theorist. I am normally the sanest of individuals, but so much of this kind of thing just keeps happening. I tell everyone who will listen that I believe Lyrica is a "bad drug". I have memory problems, gained 30 pounds within 6 months, my eyesight has been damaged, I have numb areas, I have fatigue, I can't find words when I am talking, I have withdrawn from society and when I do get out I keep quiet because I am afraid I wont be able to express myself properly. And I could go on and on. However, I took Lyrica, not a generic drug. AND just because it is taking so long to try and get some help this should be put into whatever lawsuit is applied and it should be grandfathered. I don't know if any of us will get help but I do pray so.
I don't know. But, remember when I said I was surprised that even though I stated I didn't want this drug anymore, I found it was still given to me under a generic name. That make me a little paranoid, if they know something, or knew something I had yet to learn. I will be very careful, in the future to know if I am taking the generic form of something or the original med. Where are we headed as a society when we must protect ourselves against our physicians? I 'm no lawyer, but would think that by taking lyrica; the original poison, we are in a better position. Personally I believe it shouldn't make any difference, unless filing a lawsuit in the USA or countries with similar laws. This new ruling in the US is so wrong, for so many different reasons; I wonder what the citizens can do to overturn it.
Judy , lyrica is not a generic drug , does this improve our position ?
Judy,, Thank you very much for all your hard work and having the guts to stand up against a huge corrupt system , this world is a real mess .
Wow, I will re-read this thread from start to finish over the weekend. I have been suffering big time over the past 6+months and didn't even think of Lyrica. My wife (seeing my suffering) done some searching and come across this thread. All my symptoms have been discussed in here but ultimately, the one that's getting on top of me now is Insomnia. I haven't slept more than 3hrs in the last 4-5mths and I kept trying all sorts of things... herbs, diet etc and didn't even think of Lyrica. I'm a pretty stress free person and don't have difficulty falling asleep. I wake up just after midnight and toss and turn until 6am'ish and just get up.
Anyway, very intesreting read so far... will read some more.
Ive just come across this forum and all I can say is thank you! My husband has just gone off Lyrica and for months hes had CT scans, MRI's, repeated trips back to several GPs because hes been so unwell. Insomnia, memory loss, numbness down his left side, dry mouth, stuttering, unable to put a proper sentence together, he become so withdrawn and the list goes on. He thought he had MS but of course all his tests have come up negative and it wasnt until I started questioning his medication that we decided to look further into it. Something needs to be done in Australia to make people more aware of how dangerous this drug is!!
Hello Nick and others:
I had a bit of a set back this week, so I didn't make it to the pharmacy to pick up my other meds printout. But in my journey to seek justice and compensation I am just beginning to understand the situation a bit more. I have been in contact, with 3 US lawyers, who appeared very interested in my side effects, etc. from Lyrica. They appeared to represent themselves as building a client base in preparation for a class action lawsuit. But, after sharing my story with each of them, about a day later I would receive a reply stating that at this time I did not fall within the criteria they were looking for. After the third reply that sounded strangely similar, I asked the firm to explain something to me; was I missing the sought after criteria because I did not attempt suicide, or have a family member actually commit suicide. I asked this, because it appeared on each question sheet. I never did get an answer. Because of this, it makes me somewhat suspicious. But there’s more: I found a news article that began: "In case you were so focused on the Trayvon Martin case," you may have missed this supreme court ruling: (I mean no disrespect here in regards to Trayvons’ murder trial), and the Supreme Courts ruling on gay marriage and the Voting Rights Act; the US Supreme Court also made a ruling on lawsuits against drug companies for FRAUD, MISLABELING, SIDE EFFECTS, & ACCIDENTAL DEATH. from now on 80% of all drugs are exempt from legal liability.
Karen Bartlett vs. Mutual Pharmaceutical Company:
In 2004, Karen Bartlett was prescribed the generic anti-inflammatory drug Sulindac, manufactured by Mutual Pharmaceutical, for her sore shoulder. Three weeks after taking the drug, Bartlett began suffering from a disease called, ‘toxic epidermal necrolysis’. The condition is extremely painful and causes the victim’s skin to peel off, exposing raw flesh in the same manner as a third degree burn victim. Karen Bartlett sued Mutual Pharma in New Hampshire state court, arguing that the drug company included no warning about the possible side effect. A court agreed and awarded her $21 million. The FDA went on to force both Mutual, as well as the original drug manufacturer Merck & Co., to include the side effect on the two drugs’ warning labels going forward. Now, nine years after the tragedy began, the US Supreme Court overturned the state court’s verdict and award. Justices cited the fact that all generic drugs and their manufacturers, some 80% of all drugs consumed in the United States, are exempt from liability for side effects, mislabeling or virtually any other negative reactions caused by their drugs. In short, the Court ruled that the FDA has ultimate authority over pharmaceuticals in the US. And if the FDA says a drug is safe, that takes precedent over actual facts, real victims and any and all adverse reactions.
Court ruling:
The Court’s ruling a week ago on behalf of generic drug makers is actually a continuation of a ruling made by the same Court in 2011. At that time, the Justices ruled that the original inventors and manufacturers of pharmaceutical drugs, also known as ‘name brand’ drugs, are the only ones that can be sued for mislabeling, fraud or adverse drug reactions and side effects. If the generic versions of the drugs are made from the exact same formula and labeled with the exact same warnings as their brand name counterparts, the generics and their manufacturers were not liable. The Court ruled, “Because it is impossible for Mutual and other similarly situated manufacturers to comply with both state and federal law, New Hampshire's warning-based design-defect cause of action is pre-empted with respect to FDA-approved drugs sold in interstate commerce." And that ruling flies in the face of both common sense and justice. And as Karen Bartlett can now attest, it leaves 240 million Americans unprotected from the deadly and torturous side effects of pharmaceutical drugs. As a reminder, the number one cause of preventable or accidental death in the US is pharmaceutical drugs.
Critics react:
Immediately upon the Supreme Court’s ruling, both drug manufacturers and Wall Street investors were celebrating. As one financial analyst pointed out, drug company profits should skyrocket going forward. Not only do the pharmaceutical companies no longer have to worry about safety or side effects, they are exempt from the multi-million dollar court-imposed settlements awarded to victims of their drugs. One industry critic was quoted by Reuters after the verdict. "Today's court decision provides a disincentive for generic makers of drugs to monitor safety of their products and to make sure that they have a surveillance system in place to detect adverse events that pose a threat to patients," Michael Carome, director of Public Citizen's Health Research Group told the news outlet. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) was quick to react to the ruling by writing a stern letter to FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg, "A consumer should not have her rights foreclosed simply because she takes the generic version of a prescription drug.” But an attorney for the drug companies, Jay P. Lefkowitz, took the opposing position saying, “It makes much more sense to rely on the judgments of the scientific and medical experts at the FDA, who look at drug issues for the nation at large, than those of a single state court jury that only has in front of it the terribly unfortunate circumstances of an adverse drug reaction." In other words, if the FDA says something is safe, it doesn’t matter if that decision is wrong or the result of lies, fraud or deception on the part of the world’s pharmaceutical companies. And there’s no way to sue the FDA for being wrong and costing millions of unsuspecting Americans their lives. That result leaves 240 million Americans unprotected from an industry responsible for more preventable deaths in the US than any other cause. I have copied this from an article by Whiteout Press.
This is terrifying news; the freedom that drug manufacturers have under this ruling is nothing short of criminal. So, now I look for justice on this side of the border. I have a telephone interview with a law firm out of Toronto, Ontario tomorrow. This particular firm has a pending class action lawsuit underway with Phizer in regards to the drug, Champix. Fortunately, Canada does not entertain a blanket exemption for drug manufacturers (yet).I have specifically asked this firm to advise me on legal recourse for individuals living in the US and other countries through the Canadian legal system. I will share this with you when I receive an answer.
