Levothyroxine Side Effects (Page 9)
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I was recently diagnosed with an underactive thyroid. I have been taking levothyroxine for almost two weeks. For the last four or five days I have had a weird feeling. It is hard to explain. I don't really feel dizzy but I get a strange feeling in my head. I guess you would describe it as a head rush. Has anyone else had this feeling and will it go away as my body adjusts to the levothyroxine?

I believe the dizziness comes from a certain brand (Unithroid). When my pharmacy switched me, I started to feel like the world was spinning momentarily. Once I figured out it was probably the Unithroid, when I switched back to Synthroid, this feeling gradually went away. It could be an inactive ingredient or perhaps an active one in unithroid. There is also a lot of posts about unithroid and dizziness.

I had my left side of my Throid removed 2 weeks ago, (i had a goitre on my left lobe) and the dr initially put me on 50 mg Eltroxin, but after a week of taking it I was experiencing hectic nausea and insomnia. Well he changed my dosage to 25mg Euthyrox, but i am still experiencing these same symptoms. The nausea is really getting to me, i am nauseous 24/7, which is making me feel crap all the time, and at night time i cant sleep, i feel like even if my eyes are closed,i am actually wide awake.
Anyone experiencing these 2 symptoms from their T4 hormone replacement meds?

What kind of natural thyroid stuff have you tried? Is it working? I am on Levo and do not feel like myself anymore. Looking for alternatives. Thanks

I am 50 years old. For years my doctor has been telling me that my thyroid levels were off and that I would soon probably need to go on medication. On me last trip to the doctor, in August, he decided I need to go on Levothyroxine. I just turned 50, so I am left wondering if that influenced his decision? I had none of the normal symptoms. No hair loss or lack of energy. Anyway, I am on the lowest dosage, 25 mcg. I was fine taking it for about a month, then one night I started having really strong painful spasms in my throat. That progressed to chest pain. The symptoms were gone in the morning. As time went on, it became hard for me to eat. It felt as though the food was getting stuck in my throat. It got so bad that now I really don't eat very much. Despite that, I have gained weight. I have skipped doses of the levothyroxine on 3 occasions now, and each time that horrible feeling in my throat magically goes away. I have looked up these symptoms, and it seems they are actually a sign of hypothyroidism....but why am I only experiencing them when I take the medication? That's what I would like to know. And how can I continue to take a medication that makes me feel aweful? I need to go in and see my doctor again to discuss this, but I wanted to learn more before I go. I fear he will not listen & believe me. How sad is that?

Ok i just talked to my doctor and she states i need to be on anti depressants. I have only had a problem with anxiety, depression, and horrible thoughts since being on levothyroxine. My gut instinct is telling me the meds are making me worse. I read an article on Dr. Mercolas website about how synthroid or levothyroxine could actually be making the hypothyroidism worse. I feel like i need to self treat myself. I cant seem to find a doctor close by that will listen and understand whats going on. I dont want the doc to try to cover up my symptoms with different drugs. I want one that will actually treat the hypo. Does anyone else feel this way?

Hi, Its the thyroxine giving you these symptoms, I have had these symptoms for fifteen years !!! I am now taking T3 and Nutri thyroid, which is a pure thyroid product prescribed to me by Dr Peatfield. I can't tell you how much better I feel not taking thyroxine any more ! I am in the early stages of changing over to the natural product and hopefully this will be the answer to my longstanding ill health with my thyroid. I think thyroxine is poison and I am glad I have changed my medication at last . It has been a very long journey many visits to my gp, specialist. You are experiencing these symptoms because its not entering your body properly and doing what it should be, probably because of an adrenal problem, you will have to find out the answer yourself because there is certainly no help on the nhs !!!!!!!! Having said what I have said everyone is different and some people are fine with thyroxine but a lot of people are not. I feel now I might have a new life after fifteen years of misery . Read as much as you can and seek out people who are an authority on the subject, gps know nothing ! Good Luck !

I too have this strange feeling in my head. Its like my brain is spinning. I also have started having panic attacts, memory problems, suicidal thoughts, and anger. I dont feel at all like my self before the meds. I am currently taking 125 mcg of levothyroxine. I think my dose is too high. I explained all my symptoms to my doctor and she wants to give me anti depressants. I know i dont need those. I dont know what to do. I feel like nobody listens. I wish i could just stop taking the levothyroxine. Are there any other alternatives?

Gday, just reading your post and it is very similar to me. I'm 22 and have had hyperthyroidism for a few years, had radioactive iodide last year now I'm on thyroxine. I don't know anyone else with this situation, so it would be nice to chat about it. If you could email me or something that would be great. My email is {edited for privacy}. Cheers, Joe.

How are you doing? I am now on Armor Thyroid and doing better except for sensitive to lights. Florescent lights are killers and I have to wear a hat and or rose/yellow tinted glasses. I think what is the hardest is, doctors are so text book and dont listen to their patients. They look at you like you have a second head when you tell them how you are feeling. Anyway ope you are feeling better

I'm a 35 yr old male w/ a slightly low thyroid level at 4.5. My doctor feels 6.0 levels are the cut off for me and then wants me to begin taking Levothyroxine asap. I'm very reluctant to take it after reading all these posts. Thoughts? Any organic, dietary, acupuncture or homeopathic remedies working for you?? I'd rather go that route..

I read some of the posts and thought to note some of my feelings. I have been taking this medication for more than 15 years and really didn't notice too many changes. For about a year, my right shoulder/arm/hand has had feelings like electrical currents lasting a few moments. I don't know if it has anything to do with the meds or not, but it concerns me. I did not experience these feelings until the doctor increased my meds. She had no idea why I had these symptoms and did not relate them to the meds. They now want to decrease the meds which I haven't taken for a week because I don't know whether they are helping or not. I have also felt dizzy and lightheaded. Sometimes I think that it's better to not take the meds and move more into holistic measures.

dl must be a doctor. i see a couple of comments from her/him around "this must be something else, see your doctor". only the docs think we couldn't possibly be "this sensitive". thank God i discovered this message board. i have found all of my symptoms (even the ones i hadn't related to the levo) here. i had an episode of memory loss today--thought it was 2/11 rather than 1/11 and called my daughter, thinking i had forgotten her birthday, which is 2/11. i guess that's confusion rather than memory loss, thinking it's february rather than january. thought i was losing my mind. now i just think i'll stop the levo. and, um, i won't be seeing my doc.

hello. I too, started taking the same medication , I'd say about a year ago. I noticed that about after six mos. my scalp would start hurting and get really, really hot,(almost like I had fever in my scalp,if that makes any sense). Then my scalp started feeling like someone was pulling a single strand of hair out of my head very slowly,(which is painful). After all this I noticed that my hair was falling out a lot. I have always had very thick hair. Every time I washed it,it came out by the handful. When I combed it, it was awful. There was hair everywhere...(.the bed, pillow, floors!). I'm in the process of trying to change the levothyroxine medication. I hope they can fix the problem, as I don't want to end up bald...waaaaaah!
