I was recently diagnosed with an underactive thyroid. I have been taking levothyroxine for almost two weeks. For the last four or five days I have had a weird feeling. It is hard to explain. I don't really feel dizzy but I get a strange feeling in my head. I guess you would describe it as a head rush. Has anyone else had this feeling and will it go away as my body adjusts to the levothyroxine?
Hi there, was just wondering what was the medicine you used to take? Have the same problem as all you guys.
When reading the posts about Levothyroxin, it seems to be that many people are having other health problems not related to the medication. I would suggest you discuss this with your primary care doctor to see if it could be something else going on.
The levothyroxine company has even forewarned that taking levothyroxine is not a way to lose weight, will not attribute to losing weight and is very dangerous for anyone taking it for just to lose weight. Your doctor should be sued.
I have been on thyroid supplements since birth and i am now 55. my only problem is the seem to make me constipated.
OMG!! I too have had pain in my jaw and cheek and assumed it was a result of Fibromyalgia. Maybe it is this med. I also have severe hot flashes/heat intolerance/sweating spells. It is terrible! I also have GAINED a signifigant amount of weight. I thought I would lose weight. Btw, I take 50mg.
I'm 27 and been on it 3 years I'm always on emotional roller coaster it's awful :( iv lost friends and a partner due to mood swings! Luckily my new partner has been very understanding
You may want to look into Lugol's Solution Iodine and perhaps determine if you prefer that over the meds you are now on. You will definitely find that Lugol's solution is a side-effect free choice that is more in keeping with the need your body has.
Johnny. I think that I know exactly what you mean. It is a very unpleasant feeling. This feeling rushes towards me; I can see it coming almost; through my head; and leaves me feeling very strange and depending upon the intensity; quite sick and rather empty; lacking energy for a while and finding it difficult to re-engage with the world. My memory is affected for a short while.
I have been on Levothyroxine for about 5 months now.
I also feel that I am on the edge of this feeling most of the time; waiting for something to happen.
I can go a few days; occasionally a week; without an 'attack'; but today I have had two! Horrible. Do you recognise any of what I am saying. Please would you keep contact?
Frances
Yes I have extreme sensitivity to light. I was on levo for over 6 years and this year when exposed to florescent lights, new place of employment, experienced eye strain, dizziness, heart palpitation, headaches, and all around feeling ill. Eventually the irregular heart beats ended me up in the E.R. After many test that came up negative...I asked "What about my thyroid med causing these side effects?" My Endocrinologist was reluctant to change my meds to Armour, but finally consented. I have been on Armour for three months and the side effects have diminished.
I went thru the exact same thing! Started in July. I turned red all over and broke out in a sweat. I feel surged inside and had panic attacks. The dr just told me it was stress and to take antacids for the stomach issues and see her in 6 months. Meanwhile, I have dropped 20 lbs and still losing. Now I am allergic to almost everything I eat too. I just don't know what to do next.
Wow-thought I was having a nervous breakdown. Been on this medication for many many months but recently started having all the symptoms described for many pages here. Don't know what changed but 2-3 weeks ago things started going haywire....really bad! Suspected this levothyroxine but my DR didnt think so. It lasts all morning & the sensation in my head is scary. I'm nauseous, extremely flushed about an hour after taking it. Today my ears are even tingling.Very nervous, mild panic attacks. All in the last 2-3 weeks after no problems for months of taking it. Thank God I'm not going crazy. Dr appt in the morning.
Drinking coffee within 60 minutes of taking your thyroid hormone reduces absorption.

I can't take Levothyroxine b/c it makes me very nauseous and also makes me feel like I have a bad case of flu. I currently take Armour - 15 mg. - and am trying to move up to 30 mg. I need to be on 60 mg.
In the past, once I got up to 30 mg. on the compounded Armour, the same old symptoms started again. I have a very high TSH, so it's a real problem finding a way to treat me. My Endocrinologist says I am like a zebra in a room full of horses. Not very encouraging.
I have been on this for years. I was diagnosed with fibro a few years ago but think it is this medicine. I am also experiencing a lot of digestive issues and reacting to almost everything I eat. Is anyone else experiencing food reactions? My doctor ran tests and decided she didn't see anything abnormal and that it is just stress or in my head.I am so thankful I found this site, these side effects are real and ruining my life. Not sure where to go from here.
I am having similar problems and have just asked GP for the purified thyroxine fromn Martindales. Just wondered how you are getting on and if you had any resistence to using this from GP.
I just started taking this medication October 6, 2012 and I am feeling a extreme pain in the back of my neck it feel like someone hit me. After reading many posting I belive is the side affect of taking this levothryroxine 50 mcg. I just got started with medication and I want to stop already. I just want to go back to feeling normal. I only have been using it for three days and I feel so bad. i hope it gets better because the back of neck feel so much pain that I even had to remove my pillows while I sleep but doesn't help either.
I have been taking levothyroxine for a few years now . And it is amazing to see that I get the same unexplainable feelings. I recently ran out of pills n started to feel worse .so it's like your body needs to adjust and I feel unbalanced n as if I need to eat something. Also a weird dizziness accures and very irritable. My doctor told me if I stop taking the pill that I can go into acoma.. It's scary...I guess u have to experience it so someone can understand it
Well although I feel like crap at the moment it is very reassuring to find people suffering the same as me. I have been on thyroxine for fifteen years now and have never repeat never felt any better ! A few months ago my doctor finally relented and let me take armour, I was so relieved at last I might start to feel better, oh no within a week of taking it i suffered my first panic attack ever, so discontinued using it much to my disappointment, I also didn't take any thyroxine for about a week also which was silly in a way because I have been trying to take it but it has been giving me horrendous side effects like dizziness, brain fog, shakiness, just a feeling of unrealness, today I feel dreadful and can only do the basics to get through the day. I really don't want to take this drug anymore but am frightened to because my doctor has told me I could go into heart failure if I do this. I also have put on 2st in the last fifteen years of taking it and it is impossible to lose any. I feel like I am at the end of the road now with no hope or help at hand.
Johnny
After about 2 months feeling much as you are describing, I AM now beginning to feel better; not cured; but seeming to move in the right direction. What a relief. I am back on the tablets; leaving them out did not make any difference. I also realised that I was not drinking enough and think that I was dehydrated; perhaps exacerbated by the pills. I now drink plenty of water; even when I don't want to; and feel that this is making quite a difference. I just offer that as something to try.
Hope you feel better soon.
The reactions you're describing don't seem to be from Levothyroxine. I hope you will see your Internist soon. It sounds like something else is going on.
