Klonopin And Suboxone (Page 3) (Top voted first)

Updated

I was recently prescribed suboxone and klonopin. So I was wondering if anyone out there has taken this combo and what thier feelings are on the subject?

Yes. This is very true. What people (even doctors) fail to realize is that a lot of people become addicted to opiate based drugs because they are suffering from anxiety/depression. It is a way of self medicating. I was off of drugs for quite some time but was still suffering from anxiety and depression. I asked my doctor about a benzo as I had tried several anti-depressants and they did nothing for my anxiety! Because he knew of my past addictions he refused to give me a benzo assuming I would abuse it. Because of this I eventually ended up self-medicating again. It is sad because if I had been treated for the anxiety correctyly in the first place, this would have never happened. I am now on suboxone for myopiate addiction, but I was still suffering fromanxiety. I did find a doctorwho was willing to treat me for both and now I am onmy way to getting off ofsuboxone andmy anxiety is finally under control. If medication is taking as prescribed it poses NO danger. I started off with a .25 miligram of xanax and eventually worked up to the 1 mg. But as I increasedthexanax I decreased the suboxone. ahving the xanax made it easier to decrease the suboxone. I am now on 4 miligrams of suboxone a day and 3 miligrams of xanax. The combination is perfect. I NEVER get high from it, it only sustains me and eases my anxiety. I am now enrolled in college full time for Psychology andhave a 4.0. It is sad when people judge you and do not treat you properly because of past history. It only ends up worsening your conditionon both ends.

Both Suboxone and any benzo slow your breathing which is probably why your friend, which first let me say I am very sorry for your loss, had died of respiratory failure. Though this can happen it only happens when youu take more than your prescribed. If your friend had no previous addiction to opiates and took suboxone along with the klonopin that is VERY dangerous. When someone has a tolerance to opiates it does not affect them the same way. It really depends on what your body is used to and how much of each medication you are taking. I am on xanax and suboxone and I have never even felt high from the combination. If you are taking it to get high and take too much of either one of the drugs it can cause death. Any medication can cause death when taking improperly whether alone or mixed. It is very sad what happened to your friend, but it is not a typical side effect when taking properly.

I agree. If he was on a low dose of both he must have had respiratory problems in the first place, one he may have not evenknown about. Sometimes we dont want to think that someone we love would take toomuch of something, but it is highly unlikely that a healthy young man with no breathing problems took low recomended doses of both medicatins and died from it. I take both and I never even got high from the combo. I am a tiny skinny little girl too. (not little as in young, just size) I am 29 years old.

The suboxone will cancel out the opiate's effect. Vise versa, (taking opiates then suboxone, while opiates are still in effect) will make you EXTREMELY sick. Violent withdrawl symptoms!!!

I am an ER Doctor at a hospital in the Miami/Dade County area. The two medications can be taken at the same time. They affect different parts of your brain. I suggest you ask YOUR prescribing Doctor about your concerns. That is what he/she is there for. Some of the comments here are totally off target and just plain ignorant. Good luck with getting clean, sounds like you are on a good path.

I'm sorry about sounding ignorant and calling people a jackass if they take these both. What I actually meant to say is not to take them improperly at the same time. (meaning to catch a high) I understand that you can take the combo as long as followed correctly. I think my friend wasn't aware and its very sad. I failed to mention this in the beginning..my bad and I apologize to whom I offended..

Im just still really upset and it hurts.

Dear--Happy that you are doing better. My sincere request to you is to Learn Meditation . YOGA . Prayers will help to boost self confidence and eventually your reliance on medicines will reduce. Best Wishes and GOD Bless you.

Oooh noo I'm not taking any of these medications.
Only medication I'm on is birth control..
I'm on this message board because I was looking somethings up because my friends death had me thinking about all kinds of things and this site popped up.

I just knew that it was needed that I apologized for my misleading post.

I also say prayers every night before I go to sleep if I do not fall asleep before I say them.
As for yoga, I would like to do something like that.. but yoga its self does not do good on my hip and knee..lol.

Ive been on Klonopin and Suboxone for a while now. about 2 years. suboxone saved my life, and klonopin helped. if i werent on these drugs id probobly be dead by now. At first most doctors will tell you its not good to mix benzo's with your suboxone but i needed to. i had no choice, once your body becomes use to it, its safe. at first mixing them, keep at a pretty low dose of klonopin you dont know how it will affect you.

You are a medical Dr. with a Ph.D (Not PHD)? Funny because the last I checked a medical doctor is required to have a M.D or a D.O. Which Im sure you know nothing about. A Ph.D in pharmacology would not make you a medical doctor, just a guy with a Doctorate. PharmD. is a Pharmacist degree, which is technically a medical doctor, as he has a Doctorate and works with medicine. You have a PHD.

Yes, you can take suboxone and opiates, but there are VERY specific parameters of which you need to follow, or else you can get violently sick and sent into instant withdraw.I'm an opiate addict, and answering this question is very easy for me, because ive done this hundreds of times, andas it has been explained to me by my doctor numerous different times. The thing with suboxone is that it has an opiate blocker chemical(naloxone) in addition to the buprenorphine. The ratio of Bupren to naloxone is very high; meaning, there isn't much naloxone in each strip/pill. If you are at all inclined to take both opiates( heroin, oxys w.e.) and suboxone in the same day, I HIGHLY reccommend that you take suboxone first. Depending on how much suboxone you take, then that depends how long you gotta/should wait. If you take 4mgs or less, you can take opiates after 3-5 hours, if you take more than 4mgs, i would reccommend waiting 6-8 hours. Worst case scenario, the opiates arent as effective, but they will still work. After taking opiates, regardless of what kind or what quantity, you have to wait a minimum of 8 hours before taking suboxone again. If you take an oxycodone, then 2 hours later decide to take suboxone, you are going to get violently ill, and will be sent into instant withdraw, so trust me, its not worth it, wait it out, or like i said, take suboxone first that day/night.

24 mg a day is a riduculous high dose, you don't need that much, and when you will want to tapper down subuxone, the klonopin won't help you because of your tolerance, my guess your doc was corrupted by pharmaceuticals lab to prescribe as much as he can, in return he will have gift, trips to hawai, etc.

Sorry for your son, he probably was prescribed way too much of xanax and subuxone at the same time, if you take one pill of each, each day, there will be no problems, it is the doses prescribed by some irresponsable doctors that is the consequence of this death. His body wasnt tolerant to one of the meds or both, and the worst happened, anyhway, alway try to use the least of those all the time.

Read someone had 3 X2 klonopin plus 24 sub, this is ridiculous, even for a heavy heroin addict 16 mg would do it in the begginning and and maks 2 klonopin per day.

Good luck.

You aren't supposed to take them at the same time. You need to separate them by time and a meal. Who would be stupid enough to take them at the same time?

You can take these drugs together, but, they can not be taken at the exact same time, so separated by a few hours time, or by a meal, etc.. (They can be taken together in small doses, separated by meals)
On Suboxones site, they urge patients not to mix them after an investigation of a nalaxone intravenous injection in France, and the only drug that the patient was on was Benzos. The patient died. There was a very large injection of nalaxone. Nalaxone is Narcan, which is injected into dope users by doctors and hospitals/paramedics, etc, to stop the human brain from accepting the opioid reception, telling the mind that the body does not have the drug in it, making the reaction not to happen. This has been effective in stopping overdoses that caused mind disfunction, in turn caused the patients to stop breathing. Well, if you mix opiates and benzos in large quantities, you can stop breathing as well. Too much opiates has thew same reaction. So, what happens is the benzo causes shallow breathing due to the relaxing tranquilizing effect. The opiate in Suboxone, which is very strong does this too. Mixing the two so they effect you in full force is dangerous. I took suboxone at 2:30 pm, I just dropped a 5mg valium at 9:00 pm. There is nothing wrong with me. This helps me sleep. I also do not need to take more than one 8mg suboxone strip... It helps me perfectly, minus the headache the nalaxone in it gives me. But, it does get me high. A different high, but it takes away the leg pains, and gives me a major blast of energy. Suboxone is not meant to take every day in place of the drugs. You are taking drugs while using it. The narcan in it does not block the effect enough because it is a really low dose. It wouldn't be safe for them to mix it 50/50, the breathing danger would start happening.
Anyway, my point is that you don't want to mix the effect, and anybody letting their doctor prescribe both to be used at the exact same time isn't too bright. It's downright stupid. It tells you right on Suboxone's site that you must not take benzodiazapenes concurrently, which means at the same time (mixing) Doctors don't check details like this all the time. My pharmacist warned me of it.. The valium I am prescribed is only to alleviate the anxiety when sleeping, after the sub wears off, and after I weaned off of the subs. They are not meant to be a replacement drug. Its an intervention drug that is only used for a week, or weeks.. Not months or years. If somebody uses it for years, they just simply do not wish to quit using, period. Start with a strip, if it helps, fine. Then 12 hours later, try one more.. The next day, 3/4 of a strip, 12 hours apart. (before the 1/2 of strip 2 x a day, I start using withdrawal ease) Then 1/2 2 x, then 1/4 twice. next day, 1/4. one time,. then off... (this is what I do with 8mg strips to get off of 30 mg roxies), I took 5-7 of them per day, and it works perfectly.. I used them for 2 years. I also used things to potentiate the blueberries, so it was like using more pills.

After I'm off of the subs, I use the valium for 3-4 days for nigh time anxiety, and start taking potassium, vitamin b6, and lots of water.

I already have done this a few times when I stopped getting scripts, or if it dried up and nothing was available.

When I quit, I also quit smoking, and start excersising, it helps the anxiety.. No anti anxiety meds needed if you got weed!

I'm very skeptical of your qualifications:
A) you say I am a "medical doctor, PHD." Medical doctors are MDs. If you're not am MD you are not prescribing narcotics.

B) you misspelled Klonopin twice...and they weren't typos. You clearly put am "i" after the "k" intentionally which indicates you don't know how to spell it.

Your admonition not to dispense or prescribe medications unless you're a pharmacology doc is a joke. One can't prescribe anything unless he/she is a doctor. You wrote what you did to lend some credibility to your statement about what you've prescribed others. Sir (Madam), you are a fraud and are misrepresenting yourself. You are potentially killing people passing out medical advice and should consider the ramifications of playing doctor when you're not one. Maybe you come from a foreign country and have difficulty with English, but I doubt that's what's happening here. Even if that were the case you need to be licensed to dispense. For instance, a psychologist (Ph.D.) cannot prescribe medication. A psychiatrist (M.D.) can. It's a dangerous game you're playing.
