Is Risperdal (risperdone) Like Alprozalam (xanax)

I am wondering if Xanax (a benzo-) is like Risperdal (a benzi-) and if the two are related in any way?

HELL NO! be careful with this drug by now you have prob. had the side effect but the should go away when you stop takeing it

ANY drug I'm prescribed that's a narcotic I take very sparingly, not very often, almost to the point of being paranoid. Usually, the only time I take Xanax is when I absolutely CANNOT sleep. Be careful!

NO!!

One is anti-anxiety the other is anti-psychotic.

Due to the side effect profile Risperal should not be used unless you have clinical diagnosis of psychotic disorder.

Risperdal is occasionally used off-label to help those with mental disorders who have trouble sleeping, however they are entirely two different drugs, exactly as LocoEddie said and should never be taken unless you are under a doctor's supervision.

I take risperdal, but after reading some post im scared of continuing it, i have no side affects and handle it well, but i was reading it was for bi-polar and i have never been disagnosed with that. Can some one please give me some feedback, i want to know that my fears are un founded

Irish, risperdal is used for many different things, including the diagnosis of bipolar. I am in the medical field and have seen it being used for depression, anxiety, and also as a sedating tool. It can be very sedating, but as with ANY medication it differs with each person. With you it could help you function easier day to day, while with someone else it could knock them out. If you have been taking it and have no concerns, continue if it helps. To me it is not the best to get feedback for medications online due to the fact that everyones body responds to medications differently. Best of luck to you!

i have been taking risperdal since i was 15 no im, 22 and have had no side effect ive been diagnosed with bi ploarity n schizophrenia I'm f***ed up i know lol but the risperdal workslike a charm wen i miss a day im likely to throw crazy tantrums and end up assaulting someone so yeah its a powerfl drug but like u all say dont use unless prescribed drugs can take a turn on u real kuick if i smoke weed with risperdal i get the sweats and light headed even vomit no joke but everyone is different

I was diagnosed with bipolar, refused meds, flipped my truck 2 years later, had to take risperidone to get released from th, e hospital, 3 weeks later I'm told I'm not bipolar but to take the meds a little longer with celexa, my suicidal thoughts came back but very sedated and calm, I stopped taking them both, 4 months later- I parachute a risperdal last night.. .

I'm on sdi for depression/anxiety. Have taken several different drugs-currently taking welbutrin and lorazspam(recent decrease in dosage from 2mg x3 to 1mg. Also zolpedim(ambian) to sleep. It's not working and my insomnia is getting to me. I wake several times a night whete I used to sleep well. I saw the shrink yesterday(recently moved and thus is a pa I've seen 3 times and the actual dr once) so we talked I told him I had been really depressed last week- it was a milestone bday and was doing some inaccurate assumptions when I didn't hear from some people which I later did. So I'm not in thst depressed mode anymore-I did cry- which I do often and he's told me it's normality only lasts a minute if two. I cried with him cause I'm tired if not sleeping and I'm tired. So somewhere in this talk he mentions putting me in the hospital as an in patient- I should have asked him more what he meant-freaked me out. Anyway he prescribed risperdal to help me sleep in addition to the ambian and Lorazspamz I was very adamant that I do not want to take anything that will make me high, dopey or prevent me from functioning-he said no-wants me to take am/pm. I was on codeine for 30 years for nerve problems and I finally got off 9 months ago after letting pain specialists keep feeding if to me. I now have the privilege if driving and being alone with my 5 year old grandson because I'm big in the codeine so after reading all this crap about risperdal I don't want to start it and I haven't yet. If my daughter knew I was taking it she woukd flip and everything I've worked on will be gone. I also live alone. I think this dr has decided I'm bipolar or schizophrenic and my previous long term doctors said no. Can someone help mad oug here? I saw my therapist today and she was very confused and worried about what thus dr thinks and totally disagreed-she obviously spends a lot more time with me. Is this drug an opiate? If do no way! I had to fill out that evaluation form they give you for each visit- my score was 9 and the nurse put a smiley face on the form but, for the very first time I did say yes to suicidal thoughts which was during those couple of days for my birthday. It asked within the last 2weejs snd I clarified it with him so afraid he's holding thst against me. I don't really trust him right now. He also is a Physican assistant not a psychiatrist. Can someone help me out here? All I want to do us sleep snd thdvsmbuan isn't doing it! Thanks- reading this forum had been very educational

Hi. This is my 1st time on medchat. My question is: why is it that the drugs prescribed by my psychiatrist all have horrible side effects; however, the drugs prescribed by my primary care physician make me feel better? I have been prescribed 0.5mg risperdal & i DO NOT want to take it bcuz of this reason--- just more of the same "cant sit still, legs r crawling w/ants inside, running to the bathroom constantly cuz it FEELS like i have to go- but i dont, my brain is frying, nightmares where i can see INSIDE my body &/or my brain is on the OUTSIDE of my head. Its VERY SCARY to even THINK about what all i have been thru w/these so-called "ANTI-PSYCHOTICS!!!" THEY MAKE ME FEEL WORSE & DOUBT MY SANITY FOR BEING A *GUINEA-PIG* & LETTING MYSELF KEEP DOING THIS... one-more-time... one-more-time...

Hello I know how you feel im gonna just cone right out and say it .im in recovery 14 yrs when i stopped using. Opiates (Codiene) i didnt sleep for over a year. I thought i was going to lose my mind but i got thru it meditation and prayer,, help to. And you wont die from lack of sleep and the depression sucks big time my partner was a severely depressed and a goraphobic too she got past it.and as far as your daughter is concerned my 35 yr old son still lays the guilt on thick im 56 and started over i have 3 grandkids and a 7 yr old daughter and soon to be 5 yr old son im still on meds. but i like me today

Hi, I'm currently taking Risperdone for bi-polar disorder, I just recently been diagnosed and I notice that when I get up in the morning I feel like I never even been to sleep, I can't keep my eyes opened & I can't even do my usual daily tasks. I'm always hungry & I noticed that within the month & a half I've been taking this med, I am gaining a lot of weight, I really wish I could find out what's another bi-polar med I can take because this one makes me feel so uncomfortable taking it, but if I stop I can tell the difference. Does anyone know another med I can take besides Risperdone, that their taking.... I see online that this med has alot of side effects for men, but what about women, because I personally see side effects within myself, my breast are also always sore.... Im not so sure about this anymore, but I need it because I'm an even bigger mess without it

Risperdal is also taken for anti-anxiety. I take it myself & find it more the useful. I get panic attacks due to high anxiety in my day to day life. The little pink pill is the only way I have found to cope with something that is otherwise out of my control. I don't care what other disorders it is used to treat. And I do not associate myself with any of them. It has allowed me to live my life the way I want to. And in the end that's all that matters. If it helps you - don't give a s*** about any kind of stigma. If it helps, that's all that matters.

my many years under sychiatric care i have been perscribed numerous antisychotic meds. In my exsperiance all of them were no good. Yes they might com me down or help me b more active but all had awful side affects as u have exsplained above. Very bad dteams of death or dying. I often dreamed of the devil. It literally tourchered me. I had to finally take a stand and stop them all. I have really bad anxiety with high blood pressure and i treat it with xanax. They started me on colonopin first....then xanax helped me better. I am biopolar and ptsd n i just deal with it on my own. O wud much rather deal than b scared to death daily. My exsperience.

My mother's geriatrician prescribed risperdal for agitation, she has Alzheimer's. So I guess that would be a "yes". We haven't given her any yet, would prefer not to sedate her to that extent unless she gets REALLY agitated. We've since managed the agitation with more attention, hugs, listening, letting her cry.... drugs aren't always the best solution, and they should be used very sparingly in seniors.

Hello!
When I was on the medication I experienced the same thing. I would talk to your psychiatrist about those concerns or about getting off as soon as possible. I had the same issue regarding too much sleep and weight gain but was moved on to Lithium. In the end (now recovered completely) being on Risperdal was probably one of the worst experiences becauae you miss out on so much in life sleeping it away. I hope everything works out!

The two pharmaceutical drugs are completely different. Xanax is a controlled substance in the class of Benzodiazepine () used to treat Panic Disorder and Anxiety.
Risperdol is used to treat disorders like Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Psychosis, and Irritability caused by Autism. Risperdal (Resperidone) is an Antipsychotic.
() Benzodiazepines possess sedative, hypnotic, anti-anxiety, anticonvulsant, and muscle relaxant properties..
Do not use either of these medications for other purposes than prescribed.. They work in completely different ways.
