I Just Found Out The Fda Pulled Asthmanefrin Off The Shelves (Page 2)

Updated

I've been sitting here crying because the pharmacist just told me that AsthmaNefrin was taken off the market. I look on the internet and it's been recalled by the FDA because it has caused chest pain and has many complaints. This decision by the FDA will kill people like me because I get a paradoxical reaction to Albuterol and Levalbuterol. They work completely different. Different drug. If I go to the emergency because I can't breathe, they save me with ephinephrine, the same drug that AsthmaNefrin is. And look in any drug book, Albuterol and Levalbuterol has worse side-effects than Epinephrine. I have to have my rescue inhaler with me everyday. The Primatene tablets are horrible, causing extreme anxiety and don't mix with my antidepressant. I was on cortisone for years and now I can't tolerante at all. I've stayed healthy and my lungs are good using Singulair and AsthaNefrin. Singulair can't stop an asthma attack. This is really going to ruin my life! What am I going to do?

Hi Paul, never heard of a powder epinephrine. Let us know how it worked. The Asthmanefrin works great for me but it's not portable, has a plug and you can't store the medicine in the nebulizer. So in the middle of the night, when I can't breathe, I have to put the whole thing together and then clean it after. Not fun when you can't breathe. It would be great if this powder worked!

I have tried Prime Asthma Relief from DrNaturalHealing. It didn't work well for me as it is an inhalable powder form that made me gag and dried out my lungs. I had been using Asthmanefrin in the EZ Breathe atomizer which turned out to be defective. The Uniclife Mini USB inhaler from Amazon worked great as a replacement atomizer and is inexpensive (about $26). However, lately I haven't been able to find Asthmanefrin anywhere so I experimented with dissolving the powder in the Prime Asthma Relief capsules in about 5mm of distilled water and dispensing it from the Uniclife. Seems to work fine so far (4 months) without clogging the mesh up. You may have to adjust the dosage according to how much will work for you. Hope this helps.

KenP..Thank you so much for the information! I always hope each month that I can still find Asthmanefrin! I can't live without it since Albuterol products actually give me asthma. I have had to order it from Wal-Mart over the internet in the past but lately, Walgreen's have been selling it along with a small nebulizer. When I asked the pharmacy if they will continue to sell it, she said she doesn't know. And Wal-Mart hasn't had it in their store for a long time. It's good to know there is something else to rely on!

I would like other ppls opinions abt a possible solution bc while I despise that the FDA is keeping ppl from being able to help themselves with OTC asthma meds (it's a business and its all abt money-shame on them, they keep pulling these OTC products for BS reasons- but I also have an issue with Nephron for allowing the atomizer to be pulled for a recall but didn't just fix the defect and sell the product again) I also understand some concerns. A. If u use OTC epinephrine and it doesn't solve the problem and u have to go to the ER, there's not much they can do for u immediately cuz they can't give u more epinephrine. There r other therapies but they take longer and by that pt, some ppl dont have that kind of time. But also B. Ppl r irresponsible. They overdose on the OTC meds which can cause a lot of other problems. Aside from all the obvious side effects- racing heart, high blood pressure, jittery feeling- it can do real damage to ur lungs and make ur asthma even worse. It's not meant to be used every day and when ppl use it wrong and cause all these other probs, it makes it harder for the rest of us to continue accessing these products. I wish some Dr would come up with a viable alternative. I'm just not even sure the best solution bc it would need to be something that would at least alleviate some of the concerns abt an OTC asthma med. It needs to be done tho bc ppl who can't afford to go to the dr (or just don't want to, whether for religious reasons or any other), still need to be able to breathe. I just abt lost it at 3a.m. when my husband started having trouble breathing and I practically flew to Walgreens, CVS, and Walmart looking for the atomizer only to discover no one sells it now. I am so grateful for these forums where I can learn what's worked for other ppl. Fortunately, for this time, the AsthmaCare homeopathic spray was adequate. It isn't always. (And I have some concerns abt homeopathics anyways bc they r not well regulated.) Also, has anyone had any personal experience with this one: I read a guys post who said he uses his e-cigarette as a delivery method for his AsthmaNefrin. I wonder if heating up the med changes the efficacy or causes side effects in any way...

HELP. I am trying to contact a "Toxicology professional"!

What will happen (Side effect's) if you put the "Asthmanefrin" medicine (the liquid) "Racepinephrine" directly on your skin?

How long would it take to work its way out of the body?

Any bad side effect's on my kidney's or liver?

Hi Ken, I just recently got the DrNaturalHealing Prime Asthma Inhaler, too. I hope its working for you. For people who haven't seen this, its basically a powder version of the old Primatene mist inhaler (the ingredient is epinephrine), where the powder is stored in a capsule which you place inside the small plastic inhaler.

The beauty this is that its the first over the counter asthma inhaler I've found since Primatene, AND the design is so simple and compact (no batteries or water required!), that its the first over the counter truly portable inhaler since Primatene as well. Basically you put the capsule in the inhaler, press buttons on the sides to puncture the capsule, and then you strongly inhale through your mouth to get a dose of the medication.

The design is quite elegant in that your inhale provides the "power" of the inhaler, allowing it to be battery-less and small enough to easily carry in your pocket. Since the medication is delivered in a powder, and not water mist, it is truly portable and can be carried with you at all times, like an albuterol rescue inhaler, and unlike Asthmanefrin and other medications delivered through a water mist, which require you to set up a nebulizer with water before using it (not fun when you're feeling really sick!)

I would say that the main disadvantage of the powder design comes from its advantage - since your inhale is essential powering the inhaler by drawing the powder out of the capsule, if your breathing is already weaker, it may take several inhales to get a good dose of the medication. On the company's website, they say they will soon release a spray version of the inhaler, which will spray the medication out as a liquid mist rather than the powder. You can sign up on there to see when it will be released. If this design works, it would essentially be the same as the old Primatene Mist inhalers, except it looks like it would release the medication through a small hand pump (like the small Homeopathic asthma sprays you can find in drugstores), rather than Primatene's old aerosol mechanism.

Not actually epinephrine. It would be very expensive and could possibly cause a heart attack.

I have been using the Prime Asthma Relief from Dr Natural Healing for close to a year now. It works great for me. Simple to use, effective and very convenient. They are also in the process of developing an epinephrine mist delivery system which is reportedly going to be available fairly soon. They also have a number of other natural asthma and allergy products available on their website.

The scum at the FDA are trying to harass DrNaturalHealing just like the they did Primatene Mist. I use their inhaler, which is basically the old Primatene inhaler (but with dry tablets instead of aerosol spray) and it works great. Crushed tablets and capsules are used in inhalers around the world, the FDA is just look for an excuse to scare people. The FDA is not just incompetent, but truly corrupt and evil.

Asthmanefrin is still available. I bought it online with free shipping. Search google for it and you can find it online or at walmart. I ordered two boxes because it helps relieve my chest pressure.

I would have to agree, I think that it is BS that they pulled that off the counters. They're claiming that it gave people increased heart rate and that type of stuff. Have you people ever used an actual nebulizer treatment at the hospital that cost you several hundred dollars? It gives you the same side effects: dizziness, nausea, increased heart rate. Same damn thing that handheld Adam miser worked excellent works better than a butyryl inhaler and they pulled it off the shelf. I've been dealing with asthma my entire life and doctors and the FDA always find an excuse to pull something that you can purchase over-the-counter off the shelves basically to force you to go to your doctor and get prescribed something and then your insurance goes up or your insurance doesn't cover asthma medication because it is a crock of s*** and they basically want you to continue to see a specialist after specialist after specialist and take your money when you know you have found something that has worked for years and no longer is available. I think you can tell that this is all just a money grab. All the doctors and everything, all they want is for you to continue to come in year after year for your yearly review that you don't need because you know you have asthma and it's no big deal. Just put the damn things back on the shelf and let the people who understand how to use the product to use the product.

I agree! It's wrong what they are doing. I couldn't find Asthmanefrin yesterday, again and the Walgreen's pharmacist told me they were discontinued along with other over-the-counter drugs in question of safety. She told me to go to a doctor and get on Albuterol. I said, I did that and I can't tolerate it. It gives me asthma. Then she said, try Advair. I said, well that is steroids and albuterol. She said, oh ya.. So I now can't find it again and have called everywhere. Walmart says their product is out of stock along with the other outlets that Nephron Pharmaceuticals list on their website. They won't call me back after 2 days. Didn't answer the phone. So my husband ordered some on the internet. Kind of scary. Hope I don't get poisoned. :(

I'm sorry to hear that Saphrona! I was in my CVS about a month ago and I saw the Asthmanefrin refills there. I was actually planning on buying a couple of boxes this week to stock up for winter.

You made me want to double check your CVS. Not sure what area of the country you're in but CVS in Wisconsin have pulled it off their shelves and when you ask them about it they make it sound like they've never heard of it and never had it on their shelves to begin with. I was able to find some online at FamilyOTC. It showed up today, it was proper. May want to check into that if you are unable to find it at your local CVS.

You know I just checked the CVS site and Asthmanefrin no longer comes up when you search for it. In google, it brings you to an Asthmanefrin CVS page, but the links no longer work. I guess Obama wants to make sure he can kill as many asthmatics as possible before he leaves office...

It's not Obama, it's pulmonary experts in the FDA like Badrul Chowdhury. I was just reading the letter sent to Nephron Pharmaceuticals telling them that Asthmanefrin is a new product that hasn't been tested for safety even though Raceniphrine has been classified as safe just like epinephrine was many years ago. Chowdhury is determined to get rid of all over-the-counter drugs for asthma, telling everyone to go to your doctor and get on Albuterol. I think a lot of these doctors trying to take away drugs like Primatene Mist are also promoting Advair, like Dr. Mathew Mintz. He has his own blog and told me he also wants drugs like Tylenol taken off the shelves. I investigated him and he is on the advair board making a lot of money promoting Advair. He could care less that I can't tolerate Advair. He told me, go to the doctor and stop spreading lies. Look at his picture; he is so snooty. Today, I think the only place you can get Asthmanefrin now is on the internet. I just got a box in the mail today and it looks ok. I'll let you know if I get poisoned or killed :D. I was completely out yesterday so I am happy right now but then what? My grandson has asthma and he tells me his Albuterol works a lot better in his nebulizer. Hmmm, so I looked this up on the internet and found out that a lot of people have problems with the Albuterol canister because of the preservative in it. By the 4th spray, the preservative has built up in the canister and you get a shot of it of 1.0, instead of what you should get, which is 0.1. I read the new HFA canisters cause a lot of people to complain. It's a long shot, but I am going to try a vile of Albuterol in my nebulizer and see what happens. I feel so bad for people that don't have insurance or can't afford to go to the doctor. Albuterol generic costs about twice as much as Asthmanefrin. Good luck..I hope you are OK!

Thank you Mac! I can't believe Asthmanefrin just disappeared without warning and I can't get Nephron to answer or call me back. My husband ordered me some and I just got it but then what? I read that the Abuterol HFA canisters are faulty, releasing a huge amount of preservative and giving people asthma. I am going to try Albuterol in a nebulizer to see what happens. Albuterol in the canister gives me asthma. Meanwhile, Primatene Mist is getting ready for the FDA approval again this year for their HFA canister. According to Walgreen's, it won't happen. I hope they are wrong. I read that Asthmanefrin needs to get approved before they can sell their product. I hope you will be OK. I will keep you posted when I find out more about Asthmanefrin.

This is an update about trying Albuterol with a nebulizer as apposed to the canister. It was a failure and I woke up with a terrible asthma attack and my lungs hurt. I don't want another night like that one! When I took a puff off of the nebulizer, it made the room spin for about 10 seconds. It makes my heart pound and Asthmanefrin (racepinephrine) doesn't unless I have to use it too many times. Since I started using Singulair, I haven't had to use my rescue inhaler nearly as much when the seasons changed. Yes, I had been on steroids for many years and stopped in 1988 because I couldn't tolerate it any more. My asthma actually got better after I stopped. I still can't find out why the stores and their websites have taken Asthmanefrin off the shelves. And Nephron has still not called me back after 2 weeks of trying and leaving 3 messages. I am very upset about this!
