I have been on humira for 14 months along with mtx. I have yet to see any improvement. I feel like I'm getting worse actually. I use a cane to walk. My elbow & knees hurt so bad to touch the bed to sleep. It keeps me awake at night. I am relying on ibp & oxycodone every 6 hrs to try & move. I have an appointment with my rheumatologist in 2 weeks &hoping for a change in medication. I assume I should have seen some relief by now. Anyone else take it so long without relief? ## Hello, Lisa! How are you doing? I'm sorry that you're in so much pain. Yes, I think that after 14 months, if there's no improvement, it is time to move on and try something else. Can anyone that's been on it chime in with their experiences? The FDA lists the typical side effects of...
2 REPLIES UpdatedMy boyfriend is on Humira and has just had his second jab, the instant he took it he has been a different person. The kind, gentle, sweet man I knew seems to be gone. He's constantly angry, he has no desire for me in any way, he's emotionally distant. In a rare normal moment he told me he feels empty, unmotivated and angry and hates himself because of it. What can I do? I hate seeing him like this. What can we do? ## It would be best if he consulted his doctor as they may need to conduct some medical exams. While they are very rare, this medication has been known to cause some cerebrovascular accidents, which may cause permanent damage, if left untreated, according to the U.S. FDA. These medications can be unpredictable, so it is always better to err on the side of caution. Has ...
48 REPLIES UpdatedHumira gave my mom lung cancer. She was not a smoker and it was the only drug she was on. She died. Don't take this drug. ## Sorry to hear about what happened with your mom. My condolences for your loss. Thank you though for providing a warning to others about humira. Based on my own research I wouldn't doubt that humira could be a dangerous drug. Especially considering that it's classified as being Immunosuppressive. This means that humira can reduce the activation or efficacy of the immune system, which may open the door for things like cancer and other potentially serious illnesses. Having said that, I feel like humira is a threat to one's ability to recover. Hopefully other readers here will discuss these concerns with their doctor before giving humira a second thoug...
9 REPLIES UpdatedI have anal stenosis along with crohns and the dr's are wanting me to go on humira. I was wondering if any one else is taking humira for this issue and what are the results. It's either this or more surgery. ## i have been on humira bi-weekly for 6 years.post 2 ops.only meds to have agreed with me. ## It is always best to follow your doctor's advice in order to assure the best outcome. You can learn more about anal stenosis here. The FDA warns that Humira may cause side effects, such as nausea, headache, back pain, and administration site reactions. Ref: Humira Information Are you on any other medications?
2 REPLIES UpdatedI have been on Humira for over 6 years for my UC. Humira has made the quality of my life amazing and I am now in remission. In the last year or so I am catching every cold or flu I come across. Now the quality of my life is on the down fall. Anyone else that has been on Humira for a long time experiencing the same thing? ## The FDA does warn that people treated with Humira may catch various infections more easily than usual. Ref: Humira Information, and warnings. Our bodies also change with time, so it is always possible to start experiencing side effects that you haven't experienced before. The FDA lists other side effects as possibly including administration site reaction, nausea, abdominal pain, headache, and rash. Have you consulted your doctor to make them aware of this issue? ...
2 REPLIES UpdatedI just started Humira in the last 2 weeks and I feel like my allergies are going nuts. My whole body is swelling. After reading some of your side effects this is somewhat normal. Does the swelling of legs, face, etc. go away? I went to the general practitioner to get something for my allergies. She seems to think its my body reacting to the Humira. ## Hello, Mic! How are you? I'm very sorry about the problem that you're having. That could be the sign of an allergic reaction to it. It should go away, in a few weeks, however, it most likely means that you shouldn't continue with Humira, as such reactions tend to worsen with repeated exposure. Other side effects, as listed by the FDA, may include dizziness, joint aches, headache, confusion and arthritis. Is there anything else ...
41 REPLIES UpdatedI have been taking Humira now for over 10 years. I have experienced almost every side effect that has been mentioned here. The thing is this drug saved my life. I almost did not make it out of the hospital when Crohn's flared up. It was very touch and go. When I was released I met a great Rheumatologist and she suggested Humira. She explained to me my risk of cancer and other side effects but because steroids did not work for me I felt I had no choice. Glad I did. Dealing with side effects of drugs is not fun. Some have worse than others I feel for you. For me I fight through them as the alternative is not good. This drug is not for everyone and we all have to make our own choices so to all good luck. Both my colitis and AS are in remission with no flare ups since Humira. ## Thank y...
1 REPLY UpdatedHas anyone taken humira for TMJ arthritis. ## Hello, Sanela! How are you? TMJ is a stress disorder of the jaw joint, which isn't usually related to arthritis, so an arthritis medication would not usually be used. Do you have arthritis in some form that may be causing some jaw pain? Or do you just have the TMJ? Has your doctor suggested trying Humira? ## Hi there, Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) occur as a result of problems with the jaw, jaw joint and surrounding facial muscles that control chewing and moving the jaw. These disorders are often incorrectly called TMJ, which stands for temporomandibular joint. My son has TMJ arthritis. He's been diagnosed with JA when he was 2 (he is 18 now); mostly had his knees, ankles affected. For the past several , it is his TMJ. And yes, h...
5 REPLIES UpdatedIm 39 and suffering from RA. Im scared to use HUMIRA iinjections because of its side effects list. i want some one to advise me if i should use it and also how was their experience wth HUMIRA ## you've probably already gotten an answer but I've been using Humira for years for RA and LOVE it. No side effects aside from some minor itching at the site and every now and then a headache but if I take it before bed i don't get one. Some of the other drugs have far worse side effects. this one is pretty mild. ## Do you have cancer now? People get cancer in 5 years of taking this drug. My mom and many others have died from lung cancer and weren't smokers but took Humira. ## I wouldn't if you smoke. The combination of the two seem to accelerate the risk of cancer.
3 REPLIES UpdatedDoes anyone know of someone being diagnosed with breast cancer while on Humira? ## HI, Audrey! According to an article that was published by the Journal of the American Medical Association, both Humira and Remicade can increase the risk of cancer. It's because they are anti-TNF agents and they said that patients taking one had a three-fold increased risk of developing cancer. Learn more Humira details here. Of course the issue is knowing whether or not the person would have developed cancer anyway, or if it was due to the medication. How long were you on it? ## 2 years and 2 months ## I was on Humira 2 years and 2 months. ## I was on humira for about 1 year and dx with dcis last Sept. on routine mammogram. Also dx with sarcoidoisis at same time. Had double mastectomy and found mult....
7 REPLIES UpdatedI wear a colostomy and was herniated around the stoma following surgery. More f the stomach wall seems to be weakening upon use of Humira. I now have four (two large in the upper quadrant of the stomach, and two small in the lower quadrant). There is some pain and discomfort as the bowel habits seem to be changing as the size of the hernias increase. There seems to be many very tender spots my back now and the bottoms of my feet burn and hurt. I developed tendonitis, but was also on Cymbalta when that occurred. I have stopped the Cymbalta but the tendonitis has not improved at all. I seem to be extremely anxious now and have anger outbursts and lots of crying. Are most of these found in Humira users? I used the starter in mid-April and am on maintenance doses every two weeks. ## Stomach...
1 REPLY UpdatedI have been taking Humira for 18 months and I started experiencing central vision loss 9 months ago. I have seen an Opthamologist specialist at UCLA and waiting for results of genetic testing to roll out Stargardt’s disease, but now I’m wondering if it is related, or progressing as quickly as it is due to the medication. I am hesitant to continue this medication due to my vision loss as I’m scared of losing more vision than I have already. In the last 5 months I have gone from 20/80 (with corrective lenses) to 20/300 (with corrective lenses). Has anyone else experienced vision loss/blindness? ## Hi Breanne, Sorry to hear about your situation. According to NIH, "changes in vision" are listed as a known side effect of Humira. It lists everything from "sunken ...
6 REPLIES UpdatedI've been on Humira for a little over a year now and the injection pain was pretty unbearable. I used to have a leather belt to bite down on. On a strange hunch I decided to try mega-hot sauce (carolina reaper based) a few minutes before my injection. The perceived leg pain during the injection while my mouth was still ablaze was almost nothing! I thought surely it must be a fluke, maybe I picked a good spot that week. The two weeks later I took another spoonful of hot sauce. Same thing! Though this time I got heart burn from the vinegar based hot sauce. I decided next time to go straight to the source and buy a habanero from the super market. The first time I bit into the habanero I was actually looking forward to the shot! When I actually did the injection I 'academically'...
6 REPLIES UpdatedI've been taking Humira for over a year now for Uveitis. I just found out I am expecting. Has anyone taken Humira throughout a pregnancy? If yes, were there any complications along the way? I am concerned about the unborn baby and would love some insight! ## Humira (adalimumab) is classified under pregnancy category B. This means that animal reproductive studies have shown adverse effects to the fetus, however no adequate and well-controlled studies have been done in humans - and that depending upon your situation, the benefits may outweigh potential risk factors. That all said, it may come down to discussing this more in depth with your prescribing doctor to help you make the most informed decision based on your medical history. Hope this helps!
1 REPLY UpdatedHey has anyone had under eye and cheek swelling? I have had derma fillers placed in my tear troughs and cheeks over a year ago and my earlobes repaired and filled with derma filler 2 years ago. My GI Dr insists it’s the derma filler. I went back to the dermo who injected the fillers over a year ago and he said it’s not from the fillers, there is nothing left but injected the dissolving enzyme just to be sure. I have had 8 full under eye and cheeks flares in the last 3 months. It always comes on 3 days after my Humira dose and remains for 2 or 3 days before going away completely. Then slight swelling under each eye and even one ear between the bi-monthly dose. I have been on Humira for one year and 3 months. This all started right at the Humira 1 year mark. Also my vision is ...
8 REPLIES UpdatedMy husband has been on Humira since December, 2017. He has been experiencing leg pain and weakness in his legs. He describes it like it feels like he ran a marathon. He even has trouble getting up sometimes. Is this something like anyone else has experienced and will it go away? Other than this, it has been working for him...took his psoriasis almost completely away. But he really doesn't like this feeling in his legs. ## Those can be normal side effects of this medication, according to NIH reports. Other side effects may include headache, sepsis, sinusitis, anxiety, and insomnia. It is hard to know if they will go away, in some cases they tend to linger when one is on this medication, and it has caused some people to have to stop taking it. You can learn more about this medication ...
1 REPLY UpdatedI was on Enbrel for yrs when it stopped being effective, my dr switched me to Humira. First injection went fine. As my aches got worse (until it kicks in) I was anxious for my second injection. Yes they sting pretty bad but not as bad as the RA. I am greatful for the meds. After the second injection, I noticed the first injection sight was red and puffy. Do I need to worry? I just want it to work! ## You should probably have it looked at, to be sure. It seems odd that a new injection would cause a reaction at the old site. How close were they administered? ## I had the same happen. I called Humira and they had never heard of it. I've been on it 3 months now. That was the only time it happened. I was letting it sit out to room temp. It doesn't tell you to. Believe it or not it di...
3 REPLIES UpdatedDoes anyone know if I can get flu jab.while on Humira.? ## Yes, I have been on Humira and get a flu shot every year. I understand you can get the shot ,but not the vaccine that is administered through the nose. ## Yes. My doctor at Mayo insisted. From all I’ve read- all get an appointment at Mayo Clinic they’ll get you hooked up with a support nurse at Humira. I’m in my fourth month for Crohns- soooo much better but wish I could talk to others to compare notes.
2 REPLIES UpdatedI've been taking Humira for about three years. I recently caught my first bacterial infection. It is called campylobacter. I was told by doctor that campylobacter is a common bacteria but because of my compromised immune system due to humira use the bacteria invaded my system and made me very ill. Easily conquered with anti biotics but not pleasant at all. Severe diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, fever of 103 for about 5 days and dehydration. I believe I got the bacteria from a deli sandwich but am not entirely sure but that was the only thing I ate the day before my symptoms started. I was in quarantine in the hospital for 5 days. This is the only bacterial infection that I have come across during the three years I have taken Humira. ## Hello, Patti! How are you feeling? I'm ve...
4 REPLIES UpdatedI’m on Humira (adalimumab) for RA joint pain and would like to know how other people are doing on it? I’m doing great. ## So very glad that it is working so well for you! As with any medication, there are those, such as you, that have had great results using it, and some that haven't had such good luck. Have you experienced any of the listed side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, and joint/muscle pain, or any others that the FDA warns about? ## The only side effect I get is blurry vision which I don’t like but that could also be coming from the RA or fibro, or prednisone. It’s hard to tell which is causing it. I did see a eye Dr to make sure.
