How Long After You Stop Suboxone Do You Have Withdrawal Symptoms? (Page 42)

Updated

My 63y/o mother survived chemo and radiation for throat cancer but was unable to stop the morphine 15mg twice a day without horrible withdrawal symptoms. Her MD put her on Suboxone 8mg/2mg once a day in June. She even took half the strip on most days and the doctor was very pleased and anticipated that she would be able to stop altogether in November. She unfortunately had a stroke 14 days ago and has been in the hospital. The first 7 days she was confused from the stroke but now she is weak and forgetful but is no longer disoriented. She told me tonight that she thought she needed her Suboxone. She said she thought she was going thru withdrawal. I was floored. She is not having any outward signs of withdrawal: no back/stomach pain, no nausea/vomiting, no sweating or tremors. Isn't 14 days long enough for the Suboxone to be completely out of your system and for withdrawal symptoms to have come and gone??? Any answers will be greatly appreciated.

Suboxone is an opiate. When a person takes it, they are swapping one addiction for another, but it is a proven way to detox slowly and safely. After 2 weeks without this med, one should be detoxed. But the relapse rate for opiate addiction is very, very high--60-75%. I would be concerned about the possibility of a relapse.

I don't know who that is directed to. Sub wasn't around 34 yrs ago and I went off cold I do not advise.
From my experience with detoxing and I had many, many attempts most of its in your head. From 80 down to 40 is pretty easy once you get to 39 what was the min blocking dose at that time the anxiety and cravings began.

If you are in a program and you probably are drop down under a doc supervision. Remember you need to be ready, I would suggest joining a support group, anyone can detox but staying clean is a lifetime job.
The first 90 days I was on a slight anti depressant to help me sleep Trazadone as I recall but 34 yrs ago there are new med's now just don't switch one for the other. Something that helped me VERY much was exercise I began running that became my drug of choice. It was amazing how in time I was feeling freat but don't let anyone tell you it's easy, just remember to stay in the present and you only have to do it one day at a time. Soon one hr will be 24 and the days go to months, to years. One day at a time if you really want it you can do it but I don't suggest doing it alone. I don't know much about Suboxone other then its a drug. It was the most difficult thing I ever did but it's doable. I wish you luck, peace and healing.

Sue, some of what you say is accurate however your lead in premice that Suboxone is an opiate is not correct. Suboxone is an opioid because it is synthesized from the plant like many other narcotics. An opiate would be something pure like morphine. I go into a detailed analysis in a prior post. Regardless they do essentially the same thing and if you are not careful they can be as harmful as good.

Roxanne56, I encourage you to keep your children away from Suboxone. Read all of the posts in reverse order and you will learn so much that Doctors do not know and fail to tell you. I attended a seminar last week at the University of Michigan Fibermyalgia Clinic given by one of the top five pain doctors in the world. He said to take everything you know about opiates and cannabis and turn it upside down. In 3 to five years opiate will be nearly impossible to obtain and cannabus extracts will replace them. Dr. Caul also states which I know from experience that you can reduce your opiate usage by 50% with the use of cannabus and cannaboid extracts.

Congress is close to changing marijuana from a class one narcotic to a class three which will reduce the paperwork and speed up cannabus medications to the market.

Many posters will state Suboxone is poison and the wish they never started on it. Please read the prior posts in reverse order. I have been off Suboxone for a year and maintained being clean of all opioids and opiates. I am still going through painful withdrawals. My Neurologist stated I have compromised my CNS. Everyone reacts differently. Good luck.

Swamp- I don't know if taking the morphine the next day will even have any effect on you until the suboxone has left your system. Suboxone stay on those pain receptors I think for 72 hours. I had extreme dental work while on suboxone and took Vicodin the next day and it did nothing for me so of course i took more and more waiting for it to work and it never did. This was also in my first year on suboxone , was on for 5 almost 6 years. Came off them last August and never looked back. Anyways so if morphine plays on those same recptors don't waste your meds switch to ibuprofen for time being. Just a thought. I'm no doctor this is me guessing.

Swamp,

To answer question about your running out of Morphine and taking Subutex in its place for a couple days, getting your morphine tomorrow etcetera; You should feel no difference whatsoever in your regular Morphine dose after taking Subutex for 2 days. EXCEPT to say you could probably get away with a lower morphine dose (for a few days or week) since you've not taken it for a couple days. Wouldn't that be marvelous to have a bit more medication at the end of the month! I'm of the opinion that if you can get by with a lil less somehow, you can set it aside for that rainy day. One time, my pharmacy's electricity went out and tho they had lights from a generator, their landline phone was out so they couldn't place their order with the distributor! They weren't allowed to call it in by cell phone, it was somehow electronically delivered. It was ABSURD. I was out of medication for 3 days and they did not give a CRAP. No other pharmacy would fill it. At the time I was taking twice what you take. The 4th morning they called to say their delivery would arrive at 11:00 & I could pick it up at noon. I had to pack a suitcase, drive 45 minutes to the pharmacy and then an hour to the airport to fly to the opposite coast, all while in withdrawals and pain. It was the worst time of my life. OMG. The rebound pain was unbelievable. Moral of story; save save save.
And further, I'm assuming you have your script and do not have to go to the pain clinic where there's possibility of drug panel.

Well said!!!
Very realistic & accurate info & totally agree-- anytime you can get away with taking half a pill either at bedtime or anytime you can scamp which I know it's virtually impossible but emergencies do happen and when they do pharmacies hospitals doctors etc. it's not their emergency it's yours !!!!
And, yes, be veeeerrrrryyy clear how ur dr tests! Good luck & great advice keikee!
Trolling, judgmental or advice that seems to be read from patient packaging don't do this only do that is not what people turn to this board for in regard to the device so yours is very much appreciated by everyone I'm sure !

I need advice about getting off Suboxone. I have a 2 yr history of up to 300mg of Roxys a day. I started Suboxone about a year ago and have tapered to 2mg a day. I never took the dose as ordered bc I felt I was trading one addiction for another and subs are $$$. My job doesn't allow me to go to rehab, so I'm trying to taper subs. I hate the way I feel on subs.. I have headaches, chills, oral issues like bleeding gums, severely runny nose, and generalized anxiety. I know this is due to tapering down, but does anyone have any advice as how to taper and function? I want off of this asap bc I'm ready for my brain to be free of any type of dope. Has anyone stopped subs cold turkey and if so how long did the withdrawals last? Any meds that can help with the withdrawals? I have a 3 yr old so it's so stressful to try to taper and be positive when no one knows or understands what I'm going thru. It seems going from 4mg to 2mg was so hard. Someone please share your experience

I agree with you. It was trading one for another. When I started taking subs I thought it was a good thing. I didn't realize it has opiates in it also. I was totally misled . I would love to know the answers to what you are asking. I take about 4mgs 3 times a week. I have tapered down from 3 8mgs. Day to a half of one two to three a week. I would love to be off totally but afraid of withdrawal. Good luck to you.

STOPPING subs--my friend was on opiates 300plus mg of oxy per day for 10 years so subs seemed like a miracle cure and at least she wasn't watching the clock every four hours etc. after the initial Tabron being on subs for about two years then of course she started cutting the subs and have taken one milligram a day eventually she continue that process until she was taking almost airline pieces from a 2 mg strip where it seems there could be no therapeutic value when I tell you cut to the width of a hair I'm not kidding And eventually she did discontinue but sadly for only about three months then would take a perk here and there and now she's back on subs 6 mg a day !!
It seems she really had everything beat until she thought she had everything beat and would take half of perk five here and there but it seem to kick off the cycle again but she always said she got more energy from the sun then though so definitely Her drug add of choice- her taper was a very long process of those little teeny tiny slivers in pieces and then every other day those teeny tiny slivers and pieces over the course of about six months so as I said at Santa be high psychological more than physical at that point but hard to tell how bad the actual WD was because she's a very dramatic person so whatever she has it's the worst ! Etc
Good luck
Also make sure you have lots of vitamins on board and dopabean and other nutritional boosters etc.

I stopped Methadone cold turkey and it was awful. Also prior to that played the switch game this for that. Not sure how log subs last in your body but detoxing from any of these drugs is difficult enough, remaining clean is almost impossible without a support system.

In addition most of the ppl on here seem to be taking them for pain, making it more difficult what to replace the pain with. Some ppl are saying medical cannabis. Again, is your goal to get clean from drugs or manage pain? I am in pain med's and depend on them to walk, work but wish I could have some surgery to end this pain cycle I worked so hard to get off them was so proud of myself. Each person, age, diagnosis is different. If you are using them because you are an addict get help. You can do it, if you brake them for pain not sure we should let society guilt us for taking something to function. If it were higher b/p or a heart problem would they allow us to go untreated? This problem didn't begin overnight it's been over 50 yrs in the making. For those abusing drugs you know who you are and there is help available. Being in chronic pain takes it to another level, not sure we should beat up ourselves. Recovery and health to all one day at a time.

Sorry for previous typos- I don't see an edit button
She didn't get more energy from the sun she got more energy from Suboxone Than ops
And hairline slivers not airline LOL and that when she reduced it to these teeny tiny slivers every other day after a long taper they seem to have no actual medicinal value it just seemed that it made her feel in control ?
But now she after stopping etc she saw a dr for sub script for the first time after two years and is now taking 6 mg a day ... She had previously started her taper on her own so she had quite a lot saved up that lasted two years during that long taper !

Day 6 cold turkey off of buprenorphine 16mg for 6 years after 3 years of abusing painkillers. Wouldn't wish addiction on my worst enemy!!! I tried a couple years ago to do cold turkey and I wimped out on day 3, couldn't hang with the discomfort, so immediately put that bitter pill back under my tongue for a couple more years. I have felt like a slave to this medication for quiet some time, and realizing I had become anti social, b****y, irritable and still chemically dependent!! I also realized I didn't laugh any more only thing that made me truly happy was always working and of coarse a spotless house! Wow what a fun life I was living!!! I know everything affects everyone in different ways but when I made my mind up to get off of this stuff I was serious! I have been tired and can't sleep got that tense feeling In my upper back and stiff muscles mostly at night. It isn't a walk in a park but after getting this far no way in hell I am ever going back!! I just keep telling myself it only gets better from here and remember for a decade I was either abusing pain killers or taking buprenorphine. I want my life back the old fun and happy me and I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength... So can you if you are ready!! By the grace of God and tons of prayers to get me through this it is happening!!! Best wishes. Spread the word on what happens when you abuse opiates, it's never a fun ending!! That stuff is the devil!!!

Tommy,
Are you still going thru Subs withdrawal a year after stopping? Holy CRAP!
FYI, Underneath the conversation starter(1st post at the very top of the page),look for the block that says; "sorted by" & then there's a drop down box you can click on & change from "conversation order" to "newest post first". That flips it around so you don't have to read the posts back to front. Pretty cool huh.
