Gabapentin Withdrawals (Page 7)

I'm being taken off of Neurontin/Gabapentin after seven years. I'm now crying, anxious, and itching all over! I have tried antihistamines and cortisone creams but with no relief.

No. Gabapentin is not an opioid, it is an anticonvulsant, mood stabilizer. And it is a narcotic, just not an opioid type narcotic. I take 300mgs 3times a day. It keeps my mood from going too low or too high. If fives me a general feeling of well being and I think its working great for me. It will cause withdrawal symptoms if abruptly stopped though.

I have been on 3600 milligrams of Gabapentin for almost 2 weeks to avoid opiate withdrawal. Now I need to get off the Gabapentin but I am going into withdrawal. How bad should my withdrawal be and how much magnesium should I take each day to be ok?

I was on gabapentin 900mg daily for 8-10 yrs. Primary dr told me to quit gabapentin when I received a pain pump implantation for chronic back pain. I am up to PRIALT Infusion Mode Simple Continuous Drug 2.71mcg/day. I was to titrate off (3) 300mg gabapentin by: quit midday capsuke immediately. Stop am caosule after 1 week. Stop pm capsule after another week. Done. I have had horrible withdrawal symptoms!! Including: Anxiety. Panic attacks. Crying spells. Depression. Fatigue. Headaches. Insomnia & sleep disturbances. Irritability. Itching. Muscle pain. Nausea. Restlessness. Muscle spasms. Stomach pain. Sweating. Some or all of this has been going on for 7-1/2 weeks.
How much magnesium should I start taking? There is 100mg in my multivitamin.

Let me tell you anyone that says Gabapentin withdrawals arent real is full of s**t, its very real!!!! Its not as bad as narcotic withdrawals but its right up there as I have withdrawn from both along with seroquil at the same time. The first 2 days were HELL. I took someones advice on here and soaking in a Epsom salt bath for about 1/2 hour helped some and quite often. I couldnt sleep, was shaking, anxiety, its all real. I was on about 6 to 8000 a day far above the 3600 mgs a day. I was taking anywhere from 800 or more a month, the Dr said I would be dead if i took that much and she didnt know and im still here. The Dr discontinued my meds for that reason. I was also taking 600 mgs of seroquil a night but prescription was for 200mgs a day. Yep I abused them. So imagine withdrawals from both. Ibuprofen helps also. I felt like I was burning up from the inside out from withdrawals. So anyone that says withdrawals arent real has clearly not stepped in our shoes. .

How much magnesium, when do I take it and what dosage? Tapering off gabapentin slooowly. 1600mg. /day to1200mg now. On 1600mg for 2.5 yrs. Terrible insomnia, anxiety, depression. Any one help?

How much were you taking and how quickly did you stop? I was on 2700 mg a day. Decided that was way too much. I tapered off 100 mg per week. Am now down to 900 mg per day. I didn't have the itching. Hope this helps

I did not take magnesium..my pharmacist told me not too..I was taken off Gabby way to fast after being on it for a year..
Withdrawal is horrid..I stopped taking it February 1st and can finally say that I am starting to feel better..still some stomach issues but all the other stuff is gone..My family Doctor wanted me to come off it 100 mgs at a time over months..but the rhuematoligist didn't think there would be any withdrawal coming off sooner..I was off it in 3 weeks and was taking 3200 mgs a day..was not fun..so please do it very very slowly..good luck

Hi, been on gabapentin for about 4 months, 300mg 2xs a day if I remembered to take, usually I'd take at night. Dr gave to me for nerve pain due to carpal tunnel both hands. Drug never helped the pain but did help me sleep better. Had cp surgery last month, decided to stop the gabapentin, didn't like what I read about side effects. BUT, the only side effect I'm having is the ITCHING! Didn't know what was going on till I read this post. Didn't think I could be having withdrawals since only took med for few months, not years. I'm also diabetic but have never had this issue. What can I take to help???

@Sandy what reason did your pharmacist give you for not taking magnesium.
I take it as I am tapering pregabalin - thanks in advance

I don't know I just told him I had heard it would help with withdrawal he said he didn't think so I trust him he has always been my go to guy!!
Been doing much better it's been 4 1/2 months with no Gabby still have a few stomach issues but all the other withdrawal seems to be gone!!

I didn't realize the reactions would be so bad. I went cold turkey from 1--600 mg gabapentin at night. Haven't slept in two days. Feel bad. Should I continue the way I am cold turkey?

I was taken off way to fast best to drop a 100 mgs at a time over a long period.
I haven't had any since February 1st and still dealing with stomach issues but doing much better.

Could someone answer my question. Went cold turkey from 600 mg gabatapin. Also feet swollen badly this is why I stopped medicine. Have not slept at all

dont cold turkey, they are fat soluble so dissolve them in milk and do small daily cuts. Dose several times a day due to short half life.
Ive done this with pregabalin, gaba-p's big brother, as pregab is water soluble, the taper is a roaring success so far, ive had to lower my cuts as i go down but im gonna be off it in a couple of months at this rate, and am feeling no wds
magnesium transdermally helps, as pregab a calcium channel blocker and i think gabap is too.
